I do not believe that forts totally turn off unless you have literally none of one of the required materials. It says that it won't work "properly," and it's based on the lowest % material you have; so if you're only supplying half of the tar the fort needs, your fort only has 50% effectiveness.

Honestly my biggest fear right now is that EU5, rather than boring, is gonna be waaaay too complicated for even your average EU4 player. I really really hope they´re keeping in mind that not everyone wants a simulation on the level of meiou and taxes (which is clearly what a lot of this is inspired by). I liked that mod, but it never would´ve had a big enough audience to be a succesfull game on its own. I can only assume that the EU5 developers are going to allow you to largely ignore these details by giving you clear, accessible overviews and the ability to let the simulation do things like buying needed goods for you, otherwise I fear the game might be in trouble...

EU4 presented mercantilism in a very rudimentary and unintuitive way, while not really simulating a free market at all. The simulation potential for EU5 is limitless, as now we will have a full model of the evolution of capitalism. We will start in a feudal state that runs on subsistence farming then gradually work our way into a proto-industrial capitalistic state, accompanied by what looks like a Vic2 economy system to simulate our changing economy.

I hope AI is competent enough at every system this game brings out. Stellaris had (still has?) a problem where they changed so many of the game's systems, the AI actually couldn't keep up, and became so stupid it wasn't even worth conquering their planets, since you'd be forced to fix whatever mess they made. The thing I'm most hopeful for (and so far, it looks like Tinto is doing a great job of it) is a departure from the linear gameplay that EU4 has. I so DESPERATELY want to ha e multiple dimensions of gameplay at once and it really looks like EU5 may give me that. Like, hell yeah I want to have resource limitations when I want to build new buildings--that influences me to do X amount of other tasks to procure the resources. The further they depart from linearity the more on board I am :)
@KroganCharr
@KroganCharr 5 месяцев назад
I'm expecting that a lot of the building stuff can work automatically. There seems to be a free market capitalism thing going on, where production buildings of which the good is in short supply automatically increase production, and if there is an abundance, they'll wind down or even close. I suspect your country functions okay even if you never touch these buildings, but you will have to micromanage where you actually care, like producing a strategic resource regardless of profitability, or making sure there is a castle at a key location. I expect super pro gameplay would be micromanaging every tiny little thing, which would be tedious, but let's be real, it's tedious in EU4 as well. People who do these really insane challenges like "world conquest by 1500" pause the game every day and go over every little thing. One of the reasons I will never be truly exceptional in EU4 is because I can't be bothered putting Byzantium start level of effort into my game at all times. I highly doubt EU5 will be all that different in that regard.

Or do I have to emulate my old job as a Dept of Public Works manager for a large USA city (I'm probably the oldest man here, lol) and spend hours considering resources before I present an action plan to the admin team? or, in Europa's terms, go to war or build a building? Because I don't want that. I assume all the grimy details will be automated, which will help. I'll take some commenters' word that this is similar to MEIOU, which I never played. Combining different woods to make a certain paper seems Minecraft-y. All in all, this mostly seems Vicky3-ish to me, and I think it's fair to say Vicky3 landed with a thud last year. Maybe it's better now, and lessons learned will be applied to EU5. I'm a little concerned with all this managing because it overlays the notion of a modern nation state atop these early-modern or Renaissance political entities, who barely had a sense of nationalism, let alone bureaucracy. It appears we now need "reasons" to go to war (casus belli wasn't enough? "fabricating claims" wasn't enough? Imperialism wasn't enough?). The peasantry wants cloves or whatever, so now we can fight. "Demand" is now a thing. I say, no, we fight because I'm the King of France, not the Secretary of the Interior of France. List of other random things Johan said in comments: if you occupy a fort, the entire province flips to you (lets goooo) if the estate satisfaction >50%, they can also build buildings that are not estate specific so happy estates can help economy, but you need lower taxes to keep them happy so its a balancing act (nice) worst estate buildings (for player) dont need inputs to prevent player from gaming them into not being built coal exists in 1444 but has few uses. you can build treaty ports in other countries as a building destroying buildings built by estates makes them angry there are unique buildings there may be dynamic change of vegetation in a location, not confirmed by johan but he said it might happen if it worked properly most unique buildings can be used if you conquer a province with it even if you cant build it yourself AI cant cheat ZoC in EU5 If there are multiple castles in a province, you need to occupy all of them for the province to auto flip

I am glad they're sharing these talks so the community can express the concerns in design for the game, Eu4 is a great game but it does have some large problems, specially in the later part of the game, I hope eu5 will be better :D and strike a satisfying balance between economy, military, diplomacy and technology, to make all nations feel unique and replayable. I do share the concerns about making the market and construction system so complicated, it looks very realistic which is nice but will it be fun? From a design perspective I am not sure of how well this adapts to the core game-play loop we have in eu4, for example you don't need to pause mid-war to look at your market/trade, in eu5 it might be necessary (if the automation AI sucks) and distracting, I hope they can pull it off and not make it feel like you're playing vic3 on one screen and eu4 in the other. The impact of the economy could have too large impact in the game-play loop, for example the AI won't be perfect at building up, if the optimal way to beat them in a war is to build+wait and win economically and not by military strategy or otherwise it might not be as rewarding, just repetitive, would also be sort of boring if the AI just wins because of this. Also there should be a large replacements for production in buildings, just to not make small nations or some regions unplayable just because you don't have some resource, for example not being able to play in America due no metalwork when you could realistically have alternatives (perhaps with some efficiency penalties).

I can only hope that EU 5 will not run on 1-2 CPU cores.... That would be absolutly terrible. Otherwise I´m pretty excited for the game. 😀

The buildings will probably be something like in VIC3, where you will have some macro management, to make it easier to play larger nations, while also being able to change production methods of individual buildings

What if they are avoiding the name "EU5" in Tinto Talks because the game will actually have a different name, so they will checkmate people who complain that it looks too similar to vic3 or imperator, and not like eu4?

All this looks great to me. My main fear tho is that the AI just isn’t gonna be able to handle these systems. Victoria three’s ai for example is so ridiculously bad at everything that it just kills the game for me.

I really like the idea of a more dynamic and complex trading system. EU4’s trading system is complex, but not in a good way imo

Imperator failed for a reason. Now paradox is making imperator 2 with the title of eu5 and it wont bode well for them. The essence of eu4 is war with economy sprinkles inbetween. They are making the trade and building too indepth that it will take awat from the joy of eu. Production method is more suited for vic3 not eu5

One criticism of these dev diaries is that in an effort to release information in drips/build hype, they make it seem as if all of these details will be actively managed. Most likely you will just accrue all these resources in the course of the game and click a button to upgrade something, or have a negative modifier somewhere and wonder "why is that?" and then fix it. Imagine a dev diary for EU4 that explained army composition- it would seem insanely complicated/micro-manage-y (and it is...) but realistically you only have to engage with it every so often in the actual game.

That's almost certainly not it. This is very reminiscent of Johan's work on Victoria II. Rather than some kind of mana pool approach, building materials will be sourced from the market in the same way that resources are sourced for forts or factories in Victoria II. The difference seems to be that, firstly, the buildings will all have a resource upkeep unlike the victoria system where pops have upkeep, and secondly, the global market is more localized through trading between near markets first rather than everything being dumped into a universal pool with demand sorted by ranking after the country's own market is satisfied.
