I rarely save videos but this one is probably the MOST useful tutorial ever. I love how Eugene emphasizes that your success heavily depends on your approach and attitude. I'm going to re-watch this video again and again when I feel down. I only regret I didn't find this video earlier. Thank you Eugene
@@PossessWithin I would say it went great and still goes :) Since last year I'm practicing almost daily and I completely rethought the way I practice thanks to this video. To give you some backstory I play drums since 2007 but I never practiced correctly, maybe just when I started I spend some time with a practice pad getting some basics done. In fact, since 2012 and till I watched this video I only "practiced" when I had rehearsals with my band 2 times a week. This resulted in a lot of things getting memorized incorrectly, having bad technique, having knee and elbow pains sometimes. Bad shit to be honest. Now I have to fight some ancient muscle memory and the most difficult part was to take a huge step back and starting a lot of things from scratch. Basically this video gave me the impulse to find time for practicing and made me realize that it is more efficient and better to work 10-20 minutes on something in particular (like "wrist motion" or "swivel technique" or "paradiddle" or whatever you want to improve) instead of just playing 2 hours straight with your band without ever realizing where your flaws are. Don't get me wrong - band rehearsals are important too, but you don't grow much as a drummer by just playing with your band and you also need to focus on your technique and experiment and that's where this kind of practice system gets extremely useful
Couple notes to everyone: pay attention to how relaxed his hands are when he's playing; he's using only "one or two" muscles at a time and the rest are relaxed and not used; that way the hand is jiggling around visibly when he's playing. That's an important notion when you practice - think about wet spaghetti when you're doing anything that has something to do with speed. That way you'll pay more attention to your technique. Also if something feels really tight or painful from the beginning, stop, play at a slightly slower tempo (without the metronome) for a minute ONE HAND AT A TIME and WATCH what your hands are doing, then do the same for the other hand. Then try again, and start relatively quietly - not all out straight from the start.
I've been at it since the 8/1/18. I have seen great progress already. Been playing drums since 1999 and my left hand is still so awkward. I still can only do 245bpm with the left hand for 2 measures. Right hand can do much higher.
I've realised how much I practice...and it's nowhere near enough and too imprecise.Thank you for this video!! It's made me wake up and realise I've just been meandering and trying to look for short cuts(Moeller vs Open Close etc) instead of focusing on practicing correctly AND consistently.Real eye opener..Subscribed !!
These are seriously some of the most clear and concise drum lessons I've ever seen. Do you think you could make a tutorial on how to learn complex songs? I don't know if you do this very much but I've been finding it hard to learn songs by ear if they are more complex like animals as leaders or between the buried and me. If I don't have access to sheet music I find it extremely hard to figure the minute and less straightforward things the drums are doing. Thank you very much for these lessons, they are the best I've seen.
I don't know why, but as soon as i hear you talking, i instantly see my practice pad + metronome and sticks in front of me, without even realizing, that i just prepared my stuff... xD
no no, that's actually really good! i come here everyday, after i made my feet smoking with your doublebass-tutorial, i put on this video and keep practicing... =) There is nothing more motivational than Eugene Ryabchenko!!! +1! ^^ haha
+Heretix1989 I can relate but my edrum kit is right next to my computer desk. One minute I'm comfy at my pc and suddenly I'm doing blast beats 4 feet away from it.
I’ve been doing these exercises for a couple months now, mostly focusing on wrists atm and it made a huge improvement on my playing. I’m starting to add fingers now.. can’t wait to see where I’m at in a year. Already playin better and cleaner than ever. Thank you Eugene
EXCELLENT...nice to see a young cat that can be serious and focused without acting silly...just give me drum wisdom Usually I HATE electronic gear, but you make it sing!
hands down the best teacher on youtube for advanced players looking to improve.. very in depth, great explanations, and very easy to understand. thank you so much for making these videos
Seriously! 10 years in the life of a drummer is nothing, but he's devoting over a weeks worth of work for an advanced drummer every single day for 10 years on top of his insane kick training regime. He devoted every day for 10 years, and it absolutely shows.
Definitely one of the most virtuous and successful drummers of recent years and it shows us the dedication and how to be professional. Thank you very much for these tutorials, they are the best just great.
Just started watching your channel 2 weeks ago tried out your tips and already Ive seen improvement in my speed and control thanks for these amazing videos man keep it up!!
Maaan, all your tutorials are awesome! Well edited, well presented, keeping it fun and most importantly very educational and helpfull! Keep it up! Greetings from Bulgaria!
This schedule really does help. I did it through every step and there is an incredible difference. You have to make sure that you will be able to do this everyday however for at least 2 months. If you skip one day, that is okay but you need to get back on it.
Eugene, I had to learn all the muscles in the body and their attachments/motions, and I must say that your drum tutorials are the most detailed and effective for improve that I have ever seen. I had to work on assisting athletes to improve their skills or rehabilitation after injury and no one I have seen provides the systematic approach to drumming form and function that have clearly implemented while being able to articulate it to others. In the beginning, I was unable to implement a perfect routine for myself because I was unsure which motions and want muscle memory would provide the most beneficial impact on technique however, now, after watching your videos I have a much better idea. Thank you!
Nice Man, I've been struggling trying to get more speed in my hands but the process is so slow I can barely notice a small progress after a few weeks. I'll take some ideas from you to make my own routine. I don't have two hours a day, but I think an hour would take me to play 220 bpm blasts for longer periods of time. I don't want to play ridiculously fast.Krimh level for 5 minutes straight is just Fine to me :) Cheers from Chile Man, I love your vídeos.
Greetings from Brazil, Eugine! Your videos are helping me A LOT in my researches about how to improve my drumming. Really, I'm constantly watching videos and reading about this stuff (I'm a drum teacher and student), and I can say you are one of the bests in RU-vid, so in the playing as in the schedule of the exercises, analysing movements, muscles memory, and so on. I'll be spreading the word! ;D
My god, I am so gonna pull off my snare and cymbal pads from my roland kit and work on this. This is a great exercise, thanks for your knowledge Eugene.
Great instructional video. He is spot on with everything. Even with these perfect instructions most people will give up and say they can’t do it. Most of the time it’s because they want to get good quickly and they realize it’s not going to work that way and they give up. It’s also sad/hilarious when people say “Playing fast like this doesn’t make you a good drummer.” This line 9 times out of 10 comes from a biased Death Metal hating non musician or a musician that’s jealous that they can’t pull this type of playing off so they bash it. Perfect example of this is when people were accusing the bands Rings of Saturn, Berried Alive, etc of cheating by speeding there music tracks up through a DAW. People couldn’t believe these guys were playing as technical/fast as they were and started to bash them. All those people got put in there place when the bands produced the raw feed of there live shows, played the songs live, basically produced the concrete proof that they were not cheating. Jared Dines is one of the people that was accusing them of cheating and put out an apology video admitting he was wrong. Of course a lot of people are not going to like this kind of playing/music which there is nothing wrong with that. Different strokes for different folks but people should atleast respect it and before bashing it try to educate themselves a little beforehand. This type of music is not easy to play and takes a lot of practice. Awesome video man and keep up the great work!
ok.. this was by far the most motivating yet overwhelming video I have even seen.. I feel like I should jump on to the practice routine but 2 hours a day :O :O :O and the thought that starting speed for drummers is 200+ bpm 16th note.. OMG.. I am stuck at 160 for months now.
Eugene, you deserve a beer or a bottle of whisky. Thank you for this tutorial, I was already loosing hope with my weaker hand and I practice everyday (Im a beginner though) when I can't practice I jam just to not loose the spirit. Thumbs up!!!
You have some of the best drum tutorial videos on RU-vid, keep it up! I have a request. Could you make the practice routines available for download, maybe a pdf format or something? Could you also have different bpm's for different skills levels to the exercises? (beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert) This would help tremendously! Thanks again
After watching your tutorials i started rethinking my practise routines and ways to learn to techniques, and never realised how resting the muscles is important. Couple of months have passed and came up with my own ways based on your routine, even thou my goal in speed is not that extreme but still, and have been making a lot of progress :) Hope to be able to see you with Fleshgod in October in Portugal!
Man you make the most awesome videos ever! love the way you do the videos, they make me wanna go practice right away. would you consider doing more beginner videos? :)
I did a recent lesson about double bass drumming for beginners. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X_jbNtUe6eM.html&lc=z13vx3bzul3tiniya04cgx1icxarxjc5flk0k
Eugene Ryabchenko yeah! I watched it and I loved it! actually I practice using that video! thanks for taking the time to reply and being this awesome my kind sir. the world needs more people like you buddy!
Just watched a few of your videos and am excited to go give some of these practice techniques a shot tonight. Been trying to learn heel toe but it just doesn't feel right, I feel like the swivel technique you showed in your other video will work better once I get the hang of it. Earned yourself a sub 👌, crazy good control and speed man well done
