Hi Laura! I know that rail passes are extremely popular, but they are definitely not cheap, especially if you are on a budget .I will reveal tips and tricks to you. From my experience, traveling by train is significantly cheaper if you don't take Rail passes. If you take a Rail pass for it, it will cost you a lot of money, several hundred euros for each Rail pass, and you must also buy and pay extra for each reservation for every train marked IC, EC, NC, NJ and similar. The only advantage of the rail pass is mobility. Since I plan my trips several months in advance, I prefer to give up that mobility and save money, I take individual fixed train tickets for seat second class with reservation for each train, which are much cheaper. Of course you have to buy them several months (3 or 4 for my exprience) in advance, because as the date approaches, the occupancy of the train increases and the price of the ticket increases. Another little trick is to plan travel on weekdays from Monday to Thursday, because tickets for train those days are often much cheaper than on Friday and weekends When added up, you will save a minimum of 100 euros probably even more. This is significant if you are on a budget.

@@invisired You probably buy your tickets before departure or just a few days before. You probably don't plan and buy your tickets 4 months in advance. It's difficult when you have children, so your position is significantly different. You have a wife and children. I am a solo traveler. It's hard to compare. I have a two-week train tour planned for June this year Split-Bratislava 30eur ; Bratislava -Wwroclaw 20 Eur Wroclaw-Poznan 9 Eur; Poznan -Wroclaw 9 Eur, Wroclaw - Bratislava 20 Eur, Bratislava -Split 60 eur (bed in couchette) I have all tickets for all trains with. reservations for only 140 euros (You can't get this price with any Rail pass.) But I bought my tickets at the end of the second month. They are already much more expensive. It is true that it requires time to plan.

Just got back from a tour of Europe. I tried to use the Eurail pass but it never worked! I could never get the tickets to download. It sucked! I could not get a hold of a customer service representative because the company does not list a contact number. They also do not have agents at the train stations to help solve the issues. It got so stressful, that we had to buy physical tickets at the ticket counters for each country we traveled to. I would never use this Eurail Pass again. Still trying to get my money back!

Great video, Laura. When we lived in Paris, we used the Flix Bus service for all destinations in neighboring countries, unusually at a cost €25 - €30. It was awesome. We did also take a Flix Bus from Barcelona to Paris when we couldn’t get a flight. That was a bit long for a bus ride.

Thanks for such a great video and your honest opinion. I am looking for videos like this because the ER Rail has changed, I used it back in 2013, when you use to get a booklet, had to choose in advance the countries you would travel too, and everything needed to be filled out with a pen LOL Having that experience, I choose to buy the EU rail pass only for expensive train rides with modern fast speed trains, such as Austria, Germany, France, or Italy. In 2013 I did catch a bus from Vienna to Bratislava, which was super comfortable, and it only costed 6 euros at the time. I think it now costs 10 euros, which is also very cheap.

Hey, Thanks for the video. I like to ask one question and if you can suggest honestly, that would be great. If our travel plan is to visit the following countries: Arriving in Frankfurt, Germany, and staying 1-3 days in each country depends on the places to visit. Germany | Prague, Czech Republic | Austria (Optional), | Switzerland | Italy (max 1-3 cities per country) Would be great to buy Euro Rail passes considering the transport budget of AUD 500 for each person and train travel preference overflight?

Great video. I’ve been travelling Europe by train for several years and have always found booking individual trains cheaper than getting an interail pass. But then I tend to book a couple of months in advance when the train tickets are cheap, and I have a set itinerary. Maybe I need to be more spontaneous and do an interail trip instead and see where the train takes me 😂

Hi All. Glad I found this Video. We have a trip to Ulm, Germany this coming weekend where we’ll stay 6 days. We also plan to go to France for about 4 days after Germany. Is getting a global rail pass worth it? Also is it possible to move around the cities in both Germany and France using the global rail pass? Or we’ll need to get additional tickets for travelling in the city

I'm flying in and out of London from NYC, and then I'll be all over the place--Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin, Zurich, Milan, maybe Barcelona and Lisbon, but I'm also looking to stop in multiple small German cities in the Dortmund area, where each city is about 20 minutes apart and I can see a few in one day. Mostly I'm going for transit photography and to eat at as many international McDonald's as I can lol. I'm really thinking that this pass could be worth it for me just based on the quantity of trains I'm looking to ride. It's just a matter of how long I'll be in Europe, and how many days I spend on each side of the trip in London that shouldn't count as travel days, so maybe I get 22 days and then spend 2-3 days in London on each side and that's a four week trip.

@leontnf6144
@leontnf6144 6 месяцев назад
In my opinion, if you have already allocated 3 full months to travel in Europe and u will be switching cities quite often (not 2 weeks per city type) or will be taking quite some day trips by train, the 3 month pass is a no brainer. As the number of travel days/month of the pass increases, the average cost per day of the pass is reduced significantly. Right now we are talking about a total of 90 potential travel days, so you are getting a good deal. Just be aware you can't hop on and off trains as you like in certain countries especially Spain Italy and France as those high-speed intercity trains will always require seat reservations which do cost extra. Some countries generally do not require seat reservations if you're not crossing borders, like Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland (excluding panoramic trains) and UK, hence are good for spontaneous travel plans, although on popular/high demand routes you are recommended to, so you don't have to potentially stand on train throughout the journey if it's full. With a rail pass you are getting much better flexibility than buying individual advance/saver tickets (those are valid only for the specific route, specific train for that specific departure time, once you miss it, no refunds/cancellations so basically money wasted). Another point to note is Europe is big, there are countries with much more expensive train fares in general and there are some with much cheaper fares. Some expensive ones include Germany, UK, France, Austria, Norway, Switzerland. Countries with much cheaper train fares are mainly in Eastern Europe like Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Croatia, Serbia, Hungary. If you travel extensively in the more expensive countries you are definitely saving money. While using the pass, if you have the option to travel between cities using regional trains (slower speeds with many more stops) and the high-speed trains (with much lesser stops), definitely stick to the high-speed ones as those are the much more expensive ones (also saving you lots of time). To give you an idea how expensive some train fares can be, a London-Edinburgh one way ticket can easily cost 100 GBP if not bought well in advance. a Berlin-Munich ICE one way ticket can cost 100 EUR even if u buy it a day or two before travel. A one way ticket bought on the travel day itself between Innsbruck-Vienna can cost 80 EUR. These days, train fares can easily be checked online by visiting the national railway websites of the respective countries. This can help you foresee all the standalone fares of your potential travel. But with a 3-month pass and frequent travel, it's unlikely you are losing money. If me, I would have easily made the pass pay for itself within one month. 🤣

They do have single-country passes. But from watching several videos, most say it isn't worth it. I think because Italy has alot of high speed trains and the pass requires you to pay extra. So it may come out cheaper booking directly through the Italian Rail company.

I will never buy Eurail pass again. Because: 1. You cannot select seats if you use their pass. System will randomly allocate seats. Four of us were allocated in different places. 2. If you buy pass from them the actual rail companies will deny to help you. 3. Their refund policy is not customer friendly. All most 100% sure, No Refund. 4. No phone no. to discuss your problems. 5. For any issue, their standard response " we are just intermediary, cannot help you. We have no control over rail companies". It's actually in their web page. 6. If you plan ahead you can get much better service form the rail companies directly almost at the same price. 7. Eurail pass eventually costs more or same because in most important routes you will have to pay for seat reservation additionally.
