Coming from a Dutch person you are spot on. The team on paper is so good, but it doesn't play like a team and I guess that could be caused by the fact that they have no identity (love that phrasing). I also agree on your line-up and how we should be playing, only thing I'd switch up is Reijnders instead of Xavi Simons, since internationally he plays better and he is one of the few Dutch player that has a really good kick from out of the pitch, which we are also really lacking. Big fan of Donyell Malen so I'd keep switching him and Gakpo and see what fits best. My preference for Malen is, because he has speed and is actually able to pass a few defenders and finish succesfully afterwards. A true good striker is what we are missing, I think Malen could be molded into that the best.

In 2008, 3 days before the match against Rusia, Holland player Boulahrouz and his wife had a misscarriage. That had a big impact on the entire team. Boulahrouz did play in the match tho.

Great video, and cool shirt man! Honestly, I don't see the Netherlands doing too well in this tournament, but they should use this as a stepping stone to bigger things in 2026, and beyond. Spot on around the midfield, and 352 seems to be the safe option, but in an ideal line up I would like to see is 433 (but then again the chances of leaking more goals increase!) Verbruggen, Dumfries, De Ligt, Van Dijk, Ake, De Jong, Reijnders, Koopmeiners, Gakpo, Depay, Malen would be my starting eleven, if not, 532 it is. Hopefully the energy/inspiration from 88 can stir these players to go beyond what's expected, but without a few world class players, semi-finals at the minimum would be impressive! If they were to crash out at the group stages, it's hard to see Koeman staying. Greetings from NZ!
The Dutchies had too many injuries and didn't play with first 11 a whole year and many players and positions changed. So maybe during Euro first 11 start but are coming back from injuries so not really match fit so a wounded lion. They might end in groupstage but if advance they might grow in the tournament.

I think if the Netherlands will do better at the euros, my guess is they reach the quarter-finals or if they did a really good job then i think they maybe reach the semi-finals. I hope they can do better at the euros.
To be honest, one of the games against France the whole squad was ill or injured😂 I think a 3-4-2-1 with one winger and maybe a midfielder (like Koopmeiners) behind the striker would be the best option for a player like Frimpong. But Koeman will most likely start with Dumfries. Koeman likes to start with pressure in the midfield instead of a low block. I would like to know what would happen if they play with high pressure like Atalanta does in this system.
2008 was because of Bouhlarouz and Hiddink on the opposite side. Bouhlarouz lost his daughter due to a premature birth just before the Russia game. This broke the feel good spirit of the team. Hiddink knew the players and the tactics too well and expertly countered it and Van Basten being a mediocre coach didn't have an answer. Hope that solves the mystery even if it is a sad reason.
As a Dutchman my line up would be a 4231 with one of the 2 dms being more like an 8 in attack, so in goal Verbruggen exiting goalie get him in goal, in defence from right to left: Dumfries, de ligt, van dijk, ake. Dumfries super consistent sorry Frimpong I love u but Dumfries is fantastic when he wears that shirt then u got de ligt and van dijk nothing to explain there next ake he kinda becomes a centerback in attack so Dumfries can push up next in dm u got schouten at pure 6 just let him dictate with the ez passes that’s what he is good in. Next in that 6/8 role Frenkie let him fully dictate the tempo he is out man in midfielder, at attacking midfield Reinders a MUST in our starting 11 second best midfielder we got. Should we run a 433 with a dm then schouten dm and Reinders and de jong as two 8’s. In attack it’s gonna shock u but FRIMPONG at right winger against Poland should it not work then Simons, both amazing players but Frimpong is great going forwards why not start him there. Simons in quals looked kinda mid ngl he wants his first goal to much wich could screw us over should he not get it. At left wing gakpo he is best there and I love him. As striker currently depay should Luuk de jong somehow get out of retirement and idk if it works like that but he makes the actual squad start him otherwise depay some experience in attack atleast.
Koopmeiners frenkie and xavi is too attacking. It would only work in a solid game plan, which, as you say, we lack. Also, Dumfries is not an experiment. In tournaments he has been one of our best players consistently. Blind should def never be on the wing. Put ake there and let blind play girona-ball in lcb. Up front Memphis is a must, but Gakpo next to him means you have two strikers without depth. I dont think you can pass on Malen, who has shown to gave plenty of depth, and played good games for NL so far. In the end there are too many question marks i fear... But if NL overperform like in the last WK they might just make it to the finals
About the midfield: if Frenkie is fit, i think he will put Schouten next to him. He's been consistent in the games leading up to the Euro's and brings balance between om the defensive side. Then the last spot will be either Reijnders or Koopmeiners, but probably Reijnders. Simons he won't start I think because he barely worked with him in the friendlies. So Schouten, Frenkie Reijnders

i still remember anything from euro 2008, especially the netherlands. hammering world champions 3-0, schooling world cup runners-up france 4-1, and went on to won 2-0 against romania with their reserves player, just only to be got schooled by hiddink's russia 1-3. van basten is too afraid to face hiddink's russia back then, netherlands counter-attacking football was just kept shut by hiddink and russia was so discipline, they make netherlands nervous and confused. fast forward ahead of euro 2024, netherlands is so stacked at the back, a lot of decent midfielders, and lack of good no.9. and if u think netherlands doesnt have a true dm, i think u are wrong. koopmeiners is a true 6 before gasperini deployed him to more advanced role, fdj can play there too, there is jerdy schouten, and wieffer who got left out by koeman. for stability i'll choose dumfries over frimpong, frimpong is too offensive-minded and vulnerable at defense. and my take koeman will do it right this time just like what he did before accepting barca job. my prediction the netherlands at least will get at qf stage. here is my line-up (3-4-1-2): verbruggen; de ligt, van dijk, van de ven; dumfries, de jong, koopmeiners, maatsen; simons; depay, gakpo. they better play reactively, pragmatic then trying to play attacking football, bcs the quality they possess at the back and their vulnerable defending.
change de ligt for Ake and maatsen for blind and i think you have the right line-up. That being said id prefer your mentioned line-up over what Koeman will play

@@stefantenhave2733 i know van de ven concede a lot of goals with spurs, but its bcs ange style of play and their full-back isnt really good. despite his heights i think van de ven is good at duels and reading the game. ake performance is slightly dropping since the beginning of 2nd half of the season. i choose simons over reijnders bcs they need creativity, reijnders is more like all-action midfielder.
The Dutch are good but agree all over the place with no real chemistry I would not be surprise seeing Austria going through as they impressive to watch and play similar to Germany I will expect France to top the group
I am a 4 at the back guy instead of 5. In short the players find each other better and easier and because we lack attacking punch we need more players in attack. Verbruggen | Dumfries, De Ligt, Van Dijk, Ake | Reijnders, Simons, De Jong | Maalen, Depay, Gakpo. Simons can also be Koopmijners and Maalen can be Frimpong and Ake can be Van De Ven. Either way we are a quarter final team as if we finish second we hit Portugal who are our boogie team.
I see your points but Germany doesn't have a good striker either. Fülle is kinda lackluster and more like a holding 9. Okay there is Havertz but do you really need a striker? I mean Leverkusen often played without a 9, having Adli or Wirtz pushing towards the goal. In my opinion Netherlands can be a thread even without a true 9 (which they have in Weghorst).

Second place in the group and a Quarter final is realistic IMO. The coach is the weakest position of this team. The game vs. Poland is the decisive one. If the Dutch click and start very well, the team can go a long way building on such a performance. But if the team plays like shit (even if they win the game), that spells trouble and we may see the same thing as the last EURO. I really hope the Netherlands do well!
The problem with the Netherlands, including the Netherlands women, they have an average around a quarter-final exit. Argentina, which I predicted once the draw was finished, would knock them out in the last 8. Spain knocked out the Netherlands in the last 8 (women). 2012 Netherlands, with the golden generation, exited in the group with 0 points. That was crazy after reaching the finals in 2010. Underperformers. I'm not excited about them.
Good point. Also, the Netherlands women lost the World Cup Final in 2019 with Sarina Wiegman as a coach. She did a similar script with England four years later.

Verbruggen Dumfries-de Vrij-v Dijk-Aké F. De Jong-Reijnders Koopmeiners Malen-Depay-Gakpo I'd play 4-3-3 because every Dutch player grew up with that tactic, you need clarity now. That's also why Dumfries is playing, Frimpong wants to attack too much. De Vrij is always supersteady, de Ligt sometimes has mistakes and Geertruida has lack of experience at the highest level and did not play well in the Dutch team. I'm also having doubts about Koopmeiners, but if he starts playing the same as he does in Atalanta than he should definitely play, he knows Reijnders from his time with AZ, so that should combine well and give confidence. Memphis has proven himself many times in the Dutch team, but you should let Brobbey make time in the team, so strong with holding the ball. Weghorst is our supersub, you know something is gonna happen when he's entering the field.
With the 3-5-2. Your suggested lineup is perfect. Xavi Simons a must in the #10 role. Can van de ven make the back 3. With his pace stopping counterattacks? Ake vanduyk and ven… Also gravenburch deserves a shout in that midfield. He’s very underrated
He’s never been included in the squad ever, koeman wanted to see him last period but he was injured. Now when the euros is almost starting koeman wanted to select him for the friendlies against Iceland and Canada…but yet again he’s injured and not fit enough yet. His time will be after the euros

I think Koeman has to sure it up defensively. 3 at the back is something that only works with lots of time practicing and time teaching it (neither of which you get at international level). Simplify it. Go 4 at the back. Timber and Wieffer are not in the squad. Timber only recently returned from injury and Wieffer currently injured. Van Dijk is undropable and if you do drop him De Vrij is Right or middle in a 3. You would play Van De Ven instead.
Dutch have NO stara - bunch mid-level players. On PAPER should be out in 2nd round. Sadly, there don't seem to be any Bergkamps, Van Bastians, Sneijders, van Persies, Cocus, Davids, van Nistelrooys, Rijkaards, Seedorfs, Gullits, Robbens, on the horizon. Sigh.
There is nothing wrong defensively. The Netherlands prob has the best defensive line up in Europe. The problem is the attack, we’re playing too defensive instead of playing forward football. The best defense is the attack. That’s clearly what we’re lacking, therefore we are defending more than attacking, obviously leading to more goal scoring opportunities for the opponents. As a Dutchman, I think we are a bit of a dark horse for this tournament despite the starpower we have. In defence, I think the Dutch are the undisputed number 1 with 6 or 7 potential starters. Our midfield is pretty good as well with de Jong and Koopmeiners and Xavi having amazing seasons. Our attack though, is subpar with only Memphis as a potential star. But in the end, players don't make a team. The coach needs to do that, but unfortunately Koeman is not a great team-builder. In the end, if we are lucky with injuries (memphis, de jong) and get in a winning mood, then we might surprise. But Rof16 or QF is the most likely end for us. Coherence in defence is only reached if you play a lot of games with each other. All defenders play in different teams or leagues. They never meet to play as a team. Yes there are nation league and qualifiers and some friendlies, but this is clearly not enough due to injuries along the way.
The Dutch are able to play multiple systems that's why it changes also. Then due to injuries and non fit players the starting 11 changed alot. I think we will see a wounded orange lion in groupstage that might heal and grow during the tournament and with the experienced players we soon will see an identity first time I think when the dutchies play against Iceland then for first time has team complete.
Koopmeiners and de Jong both injured and will not play the Euros. Midfield in my opinion should be veerman, schouten and reijnders on the 10. Right flank for Geertruida+Frimpong or Dumfries+Simons. Gakpo on the left, Memphis as free attacker with reijnders in his back, maybe Zirkzee if they can get some chemistry in the training, he only arrived with the group today (3 days before the first game). Veerman will play in the role as facilitator (think like a Toni Kroos), Schouten will be his right hand man, they did that very well as a couple at PSV this season.

We lost to Russia in 2008 because Khalid Boulharuz his wife miscarried after the last group game. The team was devastated after it. There heads were not at the game

I don't think this is very fair. If the floor is shock group exit, then the ceiling would be European Champions. While the latter is less likely than the former, it's still a possibility. As a Dutchie, I am of course hoping for everyone to be fit and suddenly click together like a machine and then ... who knows?
You are totally right. Our attack is a real problem, and if look for upcomming talents there are no good attackers. But as a dutch person i hope we will win the euro's as in 1988.
