Hey gang, I'm back with another vintage game review and this one is a rare one! The Euro Disneyland board game from Milton Bradley, made exclusively for the Euro Disney parks! This is a really gorgeous looking board game with some really neat play mechanics to it.

My condolences on the passing of the annual‐passholder program. Disneyland Paris is a worthy variation. _Vive_ _la_ _différence !_ Even things that arenʼt especially changed can seem fresh in the new context. Oddly, Itʼs a Small World unfolds like its US counterparts, ending its journey in America, leaving me a little disoriented when I exit the ride and find myself once again surrounded by France. 😉 Still, the rousing finale, with its Statue of Liberty imagery (which of course originally hails from France!), makes me as an American feel welcomed and warm and fuzzy in a way that doesnʼt quite happen when Iʼm in a park that really is in America. Just donʼt forget: When you go to Disneyland Paris, thereʼs the actual Paris to take in, too! 😃

Great review Luke. :) Love the 3D pieces - the pink castle looks like something from Polly Pocket. How do you think the challenges compare to those in the Crystal Maze game (which appears somewhat similar)? I agree that the Haunted Mansion is one of the best rides at Disneyland Paris - that and Star Tours are my top picks. I know that Star Tours opened in '87 but I can't ride what it opened in the Euro park - if it was there from the start or added later. Would have been fun to have THAT represented in the game, the obviously it wasn't really Disney at the time. I was lucky enough to visit the Florida park twice as a kid and loved it, but a board game based on Universal Studios at the time would have been EPIC (I mean Ghostbusters, Kong, Back To The Future, Jaws, T2:3D, ET - that was the golden hay day!). Speaking of retired rides that were awesome - did you ever go to Chessington World of Adventure back when it had The 5th Dimension and Terror Tomb? Man, I loved those!
@downfromtheattic
@downfromtheattic 3 года назад
Hey thanks :) you know, you're absolutely right, the similarities to Crystal Maze are definitely there, have that review queued up :D Crystal Maze, the challenges are definitely more difficult and you're timed with the egg timer thing, this is a lot more relaxed like that. Star tours would have been an amazing inclusion but you're right, not technically disney back then. Kinda hope they do another game like this just with newer rides and components, they could make it so amazing. Went to universal for the first time for halloween 2019 and it was brilliant. Seeing the time train from back to the future part 3? Damn... I got misty eyed :D would have LOVED to have seen the old ghostbusters show, did you know they had the REAL ecto 1 just parked on the street for photos there?! All what remains of that is the old firehouse...and a rollercoaster flies through the front of it. Never been to Chessington or Thorpe Park. My childhood parks were Gulliver's World, Southport Pleasureland, Morecambe Frontierland, Alton Towers, Flamingoland and Camelot. Damn shame what happened to Camelot, they had some great rides there!

@@downfromtheattic Crystal Maze is one that I've got, but have nevergot round to setting up and playing yet. LOVED the backlot Tour with the Delorean, Trimaxian Drone Ship (Flight of the Navigator) and Bruce (Jaws) back in the day before they either rotted away or were turning into diner decorations (poor Max!). So sad that all of the classics I mentioned are gone now. Doesn't stop me from wanting to go back and see all the new stuff though! Especially Galaxy's Edge.... The Ghostbusters show was definitely a highlight for me as a kid - the Clown ghost was freaky! Pretty sure it was designed and constructed by the Chiodos (who did Killer Klowns From Outer Space and Critters). Yeah I've seen what's left of the fire station there - kinda sad. My aunt lived in London, so Chessington was a staple - the two rides I mentioned were freaky awesome - fully scale animatronics based on original ideas - well worth Googling if you're into that sort of thing.

@@AtticRaidersRetroReviews Crystal Maze is fun one for sure, though it's defo one where you gotta pick your moment and crowd playing with. There's a Crystal Maze experience here in Manchester, haven't been yet but aim to once the world is open again :D Did the backlot tour at Disney Studios (MGM) but never the Universal. It honestly PAINS me what Disney have done to the Flight of The Navigator ship. They've sprayed it red, put a bunch of 50s sci fi looking stuff on it and it's in Tommorowland in Magic Kingdom above a drinks stall. The screen used prop. I would've loved old Universal, earthquake ride, King Kong, jaws. You know the REAL Orca boat was there at universal as set dressing? And they chopped it up for firewood... Speilberg went ape shit when he found out. Checked out a video on that ride at Chessington, that looks so much fun! I need to check that park out for sure

👍 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐❗ Oh, how excited I was to see you were covering this game-and the episode was even better than Iʼd anticipated! I go to the original Disneyland in California just about every year (outside pandemics…), and Iʼve been to Disneyland Paris (as itʼs now called) a few times too, and Iʼve been seriously coveting this game for a while! Youʼre right that itʼs scarce and costly-all the more so when one needs it shipped to the U.S. of A.! Until now Iʼve found very little about its actual gameplay and have been taking it on faith that it would be worthwhile beyond its lovely looks, and so I really appreciate the detailed overview. The game does appear a little more luck‑ and dexterity‐driven than I would normally prefer, but I am now convinced this would be a great game to bring to the table. Now if only I can bring it to my US‐based collection! 😃 However cynical the souvenir‐collecting goal may be, it certainly is spot‐on-Iʼm ever keeping an eye out for cool swag during my Disney‐park visits! Indeed, during my last stop at DLP, I kept hoping Iʼd find some just‐released reissue of this game. 🙂 Youʼre right that the 2004 Magic Kingdom game (Iʼm assuming thatʼs the one you were referring to) doesnʼt delve quite so deeply into the attractions for its gameplay amid its beautifully themed façade. If you get the chance, you might look into the 1972 A Visit to Walt Disney World (listed as Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Game on BoardGameGeek.com), where you can ride the monorail and get stuck on the teacups ad nauseam! Iʼm not saying youʼll enjoy it more than Euro Disneyland, but as a themed Disney‐park game it might still qualify as your (ahem) cup of tea. But donʼt expect it to be an easy or cheap find, especially with the transatlantic crossing involved… Being a Phantom Manor/Haunted Mansion fan, have you checked out last yearʼs Haunted Mansion: Call of the Spirits? Now that game is beautifully, deeply, and lovingly themed to the classic attraction-American style. I am glad to see that the Euro Disneyland game does make use of its specific setting-the Aliceʼs Curious Labyrinth minigame is a nice nod to a Euro/Paris original, and itʼs gratifying to see the cameo by the castleʼs dragon, which is an awesome feature of the real‐life park. And I love the idea of joining the parade at the end. _Merci_ _encore_ for sharing with us!

Glad you liked the review! Yeah When I first got this game there was next to nothing online about it. A play through showed up recently on RU-vid but it didn’t show much of the pieces and mechanism and they really needed showcasing, they are the sell of the game. It’s a real looker and if you’re a Disney park fan, I think you’d like this. Yeah I’m a massive fan of the parks too, never been to the original Disneyland but been going Florida and Paris for over 20 years. Agreed, it’s nice there’s nods to it being specifically Disneyland Paris with Sleeping Beauty Castle and Alice’s Labyrinth. I’m in the opposite situation where the US releases cost a fortune getting here. Would love the magic kingdom game, tower of terror clue and jenga (my favourite ride ever) haunted mansion game of life, the vintage haunted mansion game with the rotating floor and the disneyworld game you mentioned. It’s amazing really how many games based on the parks there are. The ones that really interest me are the new ideas, not the reskins of existing ones but...I mean I’m never gonna say no to Tower Of Terror anything 😂

Have seen the new Haunted Mansion game, I’m intrigued and will need to look into it. My fav park is Epcot and I’m stunned there’s no game on it yet, same with all the other parks come to think of it, it’s more magic kingdom/Disney land games when it boils down to it. But yeah, an Epcot game...I’d buy it in a heartbeat. Haunted Mansion Game of Life looks fun, has some really cool rule variants to it, love how the cars are doom buggies too 😂

@@downfromtheattic If you get-or make-the opportunity to visit Disneyland Resort in California, youʼll have a blast. (Of course!) With “only” two parks, thereʼs less of what youʼre accustomed to in Florida, but Disneyland Park-i.e., the _original_ Disneyland-is jam‐packed, more intimate, and blessed by the personal touch of Walt himself. WDW was still in the early planning stages when he died, and so the original Disneyland is the only Disney park where Walt walked-and had his own apartment, even! And I find Disney California Adventure offers a fuller day than Parisʼ Walt Disney Studios-the latter has some great stuff, but during my one visit a couple of years or so ago I was struggling to make it last past half a day. (I personally donʼt need the Pixar kiddie rides…) The planned Paris expansions, including Galaxyʼs Edge, should help. But over the years Iʼve come to appreciate the history of the original; as much as I enjoy DLP and WDW (which Iʼve also visited), thereʼs still something special about the very first park thatʼs not entirely replicable. But Iʼll keep visiting the other ones too. 🙂 Iʼve seen at least some of those reskin games while vacationing but havenʼt been too interested-though Iʼll admit the Haunted Mansion Clue does have some nice pieces which provoke temptation. But for now I still prefer to play an old‐timey regular Clue or Cluedo. Perhaps you already know that the rotating mid‐ʼ70s Haunted Mansion game actually has a UK counterpart, albeit without the Disney theming-namely, Ghost Train from olʼ Denys Fisher. Sadly, it too tends to be scarce and pricy, though less so than the Haunted Mansion version, especially for someone with a UK address. While your jaw was dropping at the bloated Euro Disneyland prices on eBay, my mouth was watering at the circa‐£5 postage charges! 😛 For my last trip to Europe, I had the idea of ordering some choice items from the “neighborhood” (France, the UK, Germany…) and having them shipped cheaply to my Paris‐area hotel, then taking them home in my luggage, but that plan didnʼt come together-the short window of opportunity can be tough. Worry not-I managed to stuff my bags with swag anyway. 🙂 As for the Tower of Terror, Iʼm afraid I can say no. Iʼve ridden the California and Paris versions and loved them. But a few years ago, the California one got changed into a Guardians of the Galaxy ride (based on the movies). Now, Iʼm a Marvel Comics guy from way back-in fact, due to back issues and reprints, Iʼm a Marvel guy from way back before I was born-but I generally donʼt get enthused about the movies. As the cliché goes, the book was better. The only superhero comics movies with any staying power for me are a couple of intentionally campy ʼ60s flicks: _Batman_ (tying in to the TV series-“Some days you just canʼt get rid of a bomb!”) and _Diabolik_ (actually based on a supervillain from Italian comics). And the _Twilight_ _Zone_ Tower of Terror being just wonderful, I havenʼt been able to bring myself to ride the GotG version. Thatʼs another reason to enjoy Disneyland Paris: It has a classic‐style version! (I hear it got a major revision recently but is still along the same lines.) Yeah, we do need an EPCOT game, complete with oversized golf ball. I suspect part of the reasoning behind the more limited theming choices is that they can apply to multiple resorts. While all the resorts do sell some merchandise specific to them, thereʼs also a lot that transitions easily elsewhere. You see that a lot between the two American resorts in particular. And sometimes itʼs not all that seamless. For example, both US resorts have monorails, and I think that at DIsneyland Iʼve seen a toy monorail set that was specific to a model in use only at the Florida locale-ouch! I understand Disneyʼs temptation to sell the park games exclusively at the resorts, but it does seem a missed opportunity not to widen the availability. As a Disney visitor I like getting the exclusive merch-souvenirs, right?-but for some items it seems that after a couple of years or so it might be worth making a different edition available via standard retail or Amazon or whatnot. Actually, I think that did happen with a cheapened version of Haunted Mansion Clue. But whatever. I expect Iʼll return to Disneyland (or _a_ Disneyland) in a year or two, and Iʼll just have to wait to pick up my sabacc and dejarik then. Iʼm certainly not picking up them up at eBay prices!-nor am I getting the mass‐market sabacc depicting the wrong actors as Han and Lando…

@@Erik.Miller oh damn, this a long one to reply to... Oh absolutely I'd love to go to the original Disneyland, purely for the fact I see a lot of those rides there as heritage attractions. Pirates, Haunted mansion, it's a small world, they've all stood the test of time which is kinda incredible. That park really was the blueprint of what a modern theme park should be, the gold standard. I'm a big fan of vintage rides being preserved. Had a theme park near me, Southport Pleasureland, it had some one of a kind rides there and a lot of the old victorian to 30s rides have been destroyed or moved and I find it so sad that noone thought to preserve them. I kinda love that Disney has pride in it's older attractions and strives to keep the fun and entertaining to guests. It's been over a decade since I went to Euro Disney and the studios section was relatively new then, am sad to hear a lot of the attractions I loved there are gone now like Animagique, Cinemagique and Motors Action. Glad they've added Tower of Terror there ;) I get your point with the history of the parks and heritage there, it's why a lot of what's planned for Epcot really doesn't sit too well with me. My last trip to WDW was during halloween 2019 and I'm so glad I got to see old Epcot one last time, though work had already started. Broke my heart not seeing the fountain, Innoventions gone and the electric umbrella gone too. Epcot always had this feel of progress and community to it. I don't think I'll ever accept the guardians of the galaxy ride in there, same with the Mary Poppins ride the UK section, the Ratatoullie ride in the France section...it's a really bad fit. This all started with Frozen replacing Maelstrom. I'm not sure I like where Epcot is headed. Test Track, the ride was so much more fun when GM had it, it felt dangerous and risky, like a proper test centre. This new theme by Chevrolet? it's like riding through Tron! and I REALLY hated that the ride ends with you coming out into a Chevrolet dealership! "Yeah, I'll get a test track fridge magnet and baseball cap and....oh go on, I'll take the new 2021 for a spin too" PASS. Epcot is losing what made it so unique to make just another disney park which I find so sad, vintage Epcot was the absolute best. Yes I've seen the Denys Fischer Ghost train game and tempting as it is...I know secretly I'd be wanting the Haunted Mansion art ;) Did a bit of the same whilst over in Florida last time, picked up a ton of games and toys I couldn't get back home, I just wish I'd hit up a goodwill and gone over all the vintage stuff... I think I'd've needed another suitcase :D Yeah the changing of Tower of Terror to Guardians of The Galaxy really annoyed me. Disney Studios ToT is the original and they have no plans to get rid of it and it makes me incredibly happy to hear that. Everything on that ride is absolutely masterful, the queue tells the story, the setting and feel of the place, it's just a superbly themed ride. I'm not a massive superhero fan myself, I'll watch them but I've never enthused over them, to me, the best films in the MCU are always the first, when the hero becomes aware of their abilities. Everything else is just...well everything else. I don't see why Disney don't make a new park based on Marvel, or a new area like how they've done with Galaxies Edge, rather than convert existing rides into Marvel rides. The Guardians ride at Disneyland sticks out like a sore thumb to the buildings and theming around it, a massive misstep. You're probably right regarding the Epcot game and it being too specific but a magic kingdom game was made so... stranger things have happened. I wouldn't know what an Epcot game would be like, visiting all the countries? riding a number of attractions there? Not getting upset about what they did to the imagination pavilion? There's a lot there they could do something with I guess :D I'm kicking myself I didn't get the ToT Jenga and the Dejarik game from Galaxies edge now but...they're both wood, I may as well have been putting house bricks in my suit case home :D but yeah, all their park merch is a nightmare to get hold of outside of the parks, I just want simple things too like the coffee mugs, a fresh Epcot or WDW tee to wear. Next time, I'm going with an empty suitcase :D
