4 star doesn't always mean an unsafe car. The star rating is an over all rating. If the adult occupant protection was 91% it still could've got a 4 star rating.

It didn't have a centre airbag and the grading has gotten tougher, that's why rivals got better marks, because they might've been rated in 2019 or 2020 when they did a slightly different test, that is why the 3 series (2019-present) got 97% in adult occupancy protection, even though the new 2 series and 3 series are on the same platform.

The bmw 3 series got 5 stars in 2019 and it’s on the exact same chassis as the 2 series shown here. Also another reason why it got 4 was because of the child occupancy protection, but who has a 2 year old in the back of a coupe, you’d just get a 3 series in that case.

No it doesn't BMW still makes cars for people who want to drive themselves. Just about all cars these days (at least in developed countries) are extremely safe, to the point where these crash test ratings have kind of lost importance. At some point we should stop trying to make cars more like tanks and instead focus more on training better drivers. "Remember, best block, no be there."

And the cars might be tanks, but BMW failed to engineer a system that everyone else has and will prevent most accidents in the future. Most of the current cars on the road do not have AEB or other safety measures

Strange indeed, but it's possible that those scored higher because they were tested using the old standards and slightly different tests. For example the 2017 VW polo scored 96% adult occupant on the old test, and the 2022 face-lift scored 94% despite additional safety features.

Does it matter?

In old cars, the steering column moved when there was a crash, this caused the wheel to jam into the driver. This was a huge safety issue and this is why steering columns don't move in a crash anymore. Another issue with the movement is that the airbag wont be as effective, especially if the wheel tilts to the right in a small overlap crash. In this instance, the driver may strike the dashboard or A-Pillar.
