Europa Barbarorum 2 is a total conversion for Medieval II: Total War: Kingdoms that is known for being the best mod ever made in this time-period. Created by actual historians the mod’s aim is to give the player an even better Total War compared to EB1 through a deeper & more authentic Roman Total War experience with actual historical research behind every feature, balanced gameplay all around & excellent battles.

What I LOVE about this mod, is how "desynchronized" the movements are. When you tell a unit to change directions, the men will try to keep formation, but every man has his own speed and reaction and those further away from the center may straggle behind. Swerving your formation becomes a serious concern, like it was in history. Its a enormous contrast with the Rome2 and earlier TWs, in which every man is a robot reacting to commands simultaneously. I wonder how the mods did that and if the behavior can be ported to the new engines. What I hate trough, is how many rebel stacks there are. They are endless and are constantly raiding your lands. I can understand the argument, that for lacking complex political systems like the paradox games, we need more enemy armies to slow the player's expansion...But I find it so tedious; I prefer less, harder, more decisive battles.

Yeah the rebel stacks is the one thing everyone complains about and I agree. The unit movement though is a great point well said!

I also noticed more of a delay in the time it takes for units to react. Although I think the rudimentary elements of this and what you talk about are a feature present in the M2 engine itself. I recall noticing it in vanilla and other mods, it just happens more noticeably here.

The mods didn't make the troops behave as single entities like that, that is just how Medieval 2 works. In regards to your rebel army complaints, well, it IS a historically accurate mod. The conquered peoples don't always enjoy being beholden to foreigners you know...

My favorite total war mod of all time. Had my best campaign to date. 950 turns across 15 real life months or so (with a break in the middle) with Epeiros. Took my time, making war and campaigning seasons instead of trying to zerg rush from the start, offering peace treaties to enemies and making a more or less realistic rate of expansion. One of the best things about EB2 is that you dont get an end game in turn 100 or even turn 300. By turn 300 you wont have just 2 massive blobs and all other factions being dead. Instead, the map has always a good number of alive factions, and some of them become really strong but never in a way that makes it lame to fight against. Basically, its the perfect mod to roleplay in that time period.

An absolute gem of a mod. It's one of the primary reasons why I fell in love with ancient history and studied it in university. It's truly hard to play other mods after this because they honestly don't feel as in-depth. The only thing comparable, that is new, is RTR: Imperium Serrectum. I feel in a few years time, after many updates, it'll be talked about in the same light as EB.

One small thing in this mod I loved, and I mean small, was the animations of the corpses. The ONLY medieval 2 mod EVER(at least that I've ever seen) where there is a mix of dead bodies. Not everyone laying dead looks like they are doing snow angels or jumping jacks. Just adds to the immersion, that's all. Always wondered why CA did this only for this particular total war. I may be the only one who cares about that sort of thing lol

@@CameronAB122 I'm a modder and I can tell you that is not the case. There is an unofficial bare bones port. A real port which will include all of the features of the original EB1 will take years.

@@alexwallachian7720 why explain it to me? The descr_strat file is barely different, you can port units without the ethnicities system, it uses the same tga.dds texture files. I could see the multiple Marian reform system being difficult to port? I mod the game too I’m not speaking out of ignorance.

This mod is indeed one of the greatest, if not the greatest. I installed the blood mod and makes it look so realistic and dramatic... it's like time travelling to the past. Sometimes i imagine how great would it be a Bronze Age mod (for M2TW) being as historical and well made as this mod. Bronze age soldiers are full of color and brutality, can you imagine? :D

I've been playing EB for RTW and then EB2 for M2TW, on and off, for about 12 years now. It's just a really solid, fun game to play. I really enjoy the pacing of campaign progress and battles. Picked up TW3K recently, and while it was fun, it got boring after about a month or so. The sense of regionality is just not there when you can recruit the same units anywhere, and teleport your armies across the map.

The Mod has its little quirks but the positive side is much much bigger than the negative. This is a mod for people who truly love this game. All other versions of total war (new and old) feel like toys compared to this one. I love that it makes the game much much slower.

I have been playing EB1 lately, got back into it a few months ago, and I have never played EB2. when it comes to M2TW I just play SS. So, if anyone has experience with both EB 1 and 2 could you tell me if you think it is worth trying out EB2? I have heard that phalanxes aren't great, since there is no phalanx formation button, and the campaign looks even slower paced than EB1, which can already be pretty slow, so those are my two concerns, anyone have thought on this?

I like the pace, but i have an issue with the names for units. they're accurate sure, but I don't speak ancient greek, idk what a Txzywqi was. i can look at the picture and guess spearman but is that spearman more elite than a jqpahaz? i have an issue with people's name's in movies in English so i may stand out a bit more than usual but still i wish there was a toggle or something so it can ease me into learning the names, especially because there's so many units.

Hi, currently having an issue with the mod. Every time I got into battle with two armies, the one i initiated it with is in the map to begin with, but the other one just stands by the border of the map with the status 'waiting to enter battle'. The odd thing is that the enemy reinforcements do properly enter the battlefield, so it's not a hardware bug and im vastly outnumbered. I have tried the large address aware fix, running as admin, changing the 'unlimited armies in battlefield' to 1 instead of 0. I did try and move my folder outside of program files, however in following the steps provided to do so the option doesn't come up to move my directory out of the program files with the 'move install folder' button. Maybe steam have stopped you from being able to do that? Loving the mod apart from that though, but really need to sort this issue out.

Most likely you have set the second army to player controlled, Medieval 2 Total War only allows you to control 20 units at the same time. If one of your units break a unit that is "waiting for battle will join.

its a near impossible task to do, since medieval 2 have much much much more freedom for modding, the most important thing in EB2 in my opinion is the campaign map where every settlement feels unique and historically accurate, and that's something you can't modify in rome 2.

Yet, some Mechanics from new TW are too problematic for an authentic experience, just to give a example The lack of Captain system, so You can't split your main armies into smaller forces to avoid battles, escape by sacrifice, creating raid forces, dividing your army to face 2 menaces etc. Now all dependant on Generals raising armies

I tried it, it is amazing in many ways but also deceptive in others. -You can't build forts (unless they update it, my memories was that the forts were already placed in random areas, like near the Golden Statue of Zeus at Olympia, in a very untactical place) -Battles are extremely long even the ones who seem easy to win -The AI Factions can't expand as the rebels are full stack armies in each or almost each settlements with lot of upgrades, so you have very low chances to meet a rising empire -You have to wait 400 turns to have access to the Marian Roman Units when playing as Rome The RU-vidr: Legend of Total war made a review of this very mod, I think he made more than one ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_i-q6o6LX7M.html What I loved the most was the reskin of all units and specially the authentic languages, how did they made it? @@Userius1 Huh, strange. 4 GB patch usually fixes crashing issues for me with Medieval II mods. But mods tend to run better or worse for some people. Maybe I was just lucky then.

This is a beautifull mod. Indepth mannagement and slowpaced battles. But it completely lacks any diplomatic effort from AI and from campaign map point of view it is empty, as there are any real agent actions from AI side. But the rest of them game, should it be a players cup of tea, yea, one of the greatest mod ever. And by far with most effort put in it by devs ever with no doubts.

EB 2 IS LEGENDARY. PROBABLY THE BEST HISTORICAL MOD. Rome 2 is just dumbed down, Rome 1 with mods just had too much flavor. I'm playing diadochi total war recently, a sub mod for Roma Surrectum. Starts during the beginning of the diadochi wars. Was inspired to play it, been reading about that timeline. Rome 2 does not have HALF the campaign mods Rome 1 has. Rome 2 has a couple. It has one great grand campaign mod, DEI. Which is like EB for Rome 2.

Even if EB2 is a great mod with an incredibly deep historical accuracy, as a game itself, it has various problems. First, and most important, units are designed to fight extremely long battles, forcing you to adopt high risk strategies to be able to rout the enemy army. Original EB also increased battle lenght, but managed to do so better than EB2. Medieval 2 units have different movements and battle behaviour because Medieval 2 was not designed for a Hellenistic era battlefield. EB2 have this problem as it's missile units (mainly slingers and javalineers) and most importantly phalanx pikemen performs poorly on the battlefield, and makes battles quite frustrating for Greek and Macedonian-style armies. Same with chariots. Finally, the game is unnecesarily complex, far more than original EB. There are players that truly enjoy this, but in my opinion it makes the game extremely slow. I honestly think that De Bello Mundi is a better way to turn Medieval 2 into Rome, as the mod is far more enjoyable, with less historical depth but keeping the playability higher than EB2.

Why do you always have to make 385273 steps to install these mods via moddb. "Make sure installation is outside of program files x86" "Open zip and copy the data folder over that same folder in your eb2 folder" "Remember to use an LAA patch" Jezus. Add a freakin instructional video or make it simpler

Agreed, I hate how modders put in so much effort in their mods but can't be bothered to make a proper easy to understand installation guide / video. Though, EB II has one of the better ones.

same problems like in the RTW version: a) none needs the original indigene unit names, why not in English??? learning hundreds of new unit names is stupid in a game, when easily it could be like light germanic spearmen. all others is complicated in battles. b) also, too many units and I fear you can not retrain it in conquered territorities after built unit buildings?! so you need long supply chains for troops or disband them. so in RTW version I played mainly with "generals only" armies and some local strong units. c) so I prefer always RTR

@@backisgabbeYT ok, it plays different. in Rome, I used mainly General Units, about the 2 hitpoints and self-healing. here it is self healing too, but only 1 hitpoint. but ok, like in Medieval you can re-train mercs in their region in camps/cities. I like the music and battle sounds playing Suebs ;)

I like making Swiss empire with judicious use of big pointy sticks so I won't disagree.

Tsardoms is amazing, playing a Bohemian campaign right now. I'd still stay EB II is the best but Tsardoms is on second place.

A beautiful mod, EB 1 is an eternal classic, but the appearance of the units is disastrous. The ugliest units I've ever seen in mods, and I've had a lot of them.
