francois mitterand, president of france, and helmut kohl, german chancellor. the picture was made at the military cemetary of douaumont in 1984. after the battle of verdun 130,000 of the fallen could not be identified, so their remains were buried together there. what mitterand and kohl did there was spontaneous because everybody was overwhelmed when the band played a farewell song. it symbolized, finally, the end to centuries of french-german rivalry and opened a new era in european politics.

I hope that was sarcasm... I like these lyrics. Hopefully some day the EU would be a real union, not just this mere economic union.

I studied English for 11 years and I still have problem talking it and comprehend people with different accents (Australians for example are really tough to understand for me), whereas after just 3 months of Esperanto I already spoke with Russians, Chineses and Brazilians without any problem of comprehension. Imagine if that would have been done in school, in just a decade we all could go everywhere and talk without any effort.

I am talking about the text written by Dr. Peter Roland from Vienna.

Der lateinische Text ist ja keine wortwörtliche Übersetzung Schillers, sondern eine Neukreation von diesem Latinisten aus Wien. Die wortwörtliche Übersetzung findest du im Internet.

Yes it's a bit easier because some words are similar, but you can check for yourself that Chineses learn it in 3 months or less.

Agree, since Latin is not common, Esperanto should be promoted.

Why anecdotes? I told you where to find the studies. There's also a TED video about it function. Anyway its qualities are really hard to be doubted, you can learn all its grammar in 2 hours or even less. Wikipedia and then "Propaedeutic value of Esperanto". Also UNESCO supports Esperanto after the 1954. My native language is Italian.

well, the one who wrote the lyrics is an Austrian.^^

You learn Esperanto in 6 months at school, you don't learn English neither after you've completed it. Moreover you'd learn Esperanto without any money because you wouldn't have to bother about the pronunciation. Today with English, only a little portion of young Europeans can speak together while all the majority doesn't speak it at all. With Esperanto all Europeans could speak a common language within 5 years. It is proven. BTW Esperanto has also particle of Chinese, no one would have problem.

who are those two men holding hands at the end and what's the context?

Nice translation, but even if I love Latin, the european language as to be Esperanto. A neutral language for all of us is the only way to make a fair and pair unification. Otherwise it would be an imposition.

Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller, born at 10. November 1759 in Marbach am Neckar, Duchy of Württemberg, Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, wrote the lyrics. So, why he shall be a Austrian? Ludwig van Beethoven, born at 17. December 1770 in Bonn, Electorate of Cologne, Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, use Schillers lyrics for his Symphony No. 9. So, why he shall be a Austrian?

51% where? Where do you live excuse me? I'm talking about actually speak the language, not just "how are you" and "my name is". Almost none of the over 40 speaks it in Europe and just a minority between youngs. About the studies which proves that Esperanto is the better choise, just google "Propaedeutic value of Esperanto" and the wikipedia page reports all the studies which concluded that Esperanto is way easier. Moreover every Esperantist can confirm it to you.

When you need 11 years to speak a simple language as english and only 3 months to learn esperanto than it is your problem. For all non-romanic speaker english is vastly easier to learn than some artificial language derived from spanish and/or french. By the way: the maybe majority not speaking english also does not speak esperanto. And believe me growing up with the hard-pronouncing language of german, english danish and so on esperanto is a pain in the ass.

Claus Angeloh Europa is a personal name. Europa was the beloved of Zeus. And the Old-Greek or Latin pronunciation in the Anthem is correct.

I agree with you and I study Latin too, but unfortunately for us Latin is too difficult to be our language. You would learn Esperanto perfectly (seriously, perfectly) in 3 months, therefor that's the better solution for a common european community in which I can come to Spain and feel myself entirely at home.

My English is way better than the average, I can say that without any doubt. I stayed in London for a while without having "many" problems, but still linguistically way inferior to natives. What you say about Esperanto sorry but is completely false and nothing but a common place. Esperanto is not derived from Spanish nor French and Esperanto is not hard for Germans, Danish, English and so on. I say this from experience. Just go ask to the English forum on lernu.net and see what English respond.
