"God bless you" is fine. "Bless your heart" can be demeaning, but it can also be an expression of gratitude. Context and the way it is said determine the meaning.
Context is very important. My favorite reply when someone says something kinda dumb is..."Awww youre so pretty!" Somewhat demeaning but also somewhat sypathetic.
I grew up in the South. "Bless Your Heart." Isn't ALWAYS an insult. You have to take in the tone of voice and the context. Bless your heart can be a sincere expression of sympathy or gratitude. And yes, sometimes it can be an insult too.
The rest of the country spreading rumors because they are too mean believe in true Christian blessings. A rude person who is angrily "blessed", has been put in their Place and reminded of their duty to God to choose better behavior in the future. Usually, it is said with love

Public intoxication is a real thing in the United States. I don’t know about everywhere but in the state I grew up in you could have three different liquor licenses. One only let you sell in places like a bar or restaurant. In those places there is no such thing as to go alcoholic beverages. The second one is like what a kwiki mart or a liquor store would have where you buy your stuff and leave the premises to consume it. And of course the third kind allows both. If you are in a community that has public intoxication laws you can be arrested for being out in public drunk, even on your own property. But you can also be arrested or ticketed for being out on public property with an open container, because the assumption is that if it’s open you are walking around drinking. The first time I encountered public intoxication I was working construction in a town that I didn’t live in. One of the guys and I walked about a half a mile to a liquor store where I bought a six pack of sodas and he got one of beer. We were walking back coming up to a bridge over a river and he decided to open a beer. He took a big swallow as we stepped up on the bridge and a voice came out of the dark by the bridge beams. It said “Guys am I going to have to ticket you for public intoxication or for littering because that can fell into the river?” As far as age goes where and when I grew up the law doesn’t allow minors to purchase alcohol, possess alcohol, or be out in public drunk but if your guardian gives it to you in your own home and doesn’t leave you alone while drinking it’s ok. That seems weird but most of the people in that whole state came to America starting in the 1860’s from Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Russia, and all of the Eastern European countries. My danish/swedish grandparents grew up with a glass of beer at their meals the way I grew up with a glass of water. The bottom line is when you go somewhere in the USA make sure you find out about the liquor laws first.
On another note, the South are states like North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Virginia, Arkansas, Texas and Kentucky. Sometimes Florida, but we don’t like to talk about Florida. States like California, Arizona, New Mexico and sometimes Texas are considered the West.
I have never heard of Texas being considered West. As a native Texan, if I heard someone say that Texas is considered west I'd be offended. Texas is exactly in the middle of the US and one of the most southern states due to being a border state. If anything it's considered the deep south. The Texas border is the longest in mileage when it comes to bordering Mexico. Even though California is a southern border state the reason it's considered west coast is because the majority of the state borders the Northern Pacific Ocean and of course it's the western most state with the exception of Hawaii. When looking at a map the amount of the state that borders Mexico is miniscule. I understand your tongue in cheek comment about Florida but for someone who isn't native to the US and is asking a genuine question he may be confused by your comment lol. Of course Florida is a southern state and it's the most popular southern state to retire in.
Anything below Gainesville is definitely not the south. The panhandle? Yes. Jacksonville? Mm yeah-.... Anything where else is different. Miami now has its own unique dialect that's basically literally translating from Spanish! That's crazy
The drinking age, and drinking in public are tied to the fact that drinking is connected with bad behavior. Remember that in the US, teenagers can begin driving at 16. And most of them get a car at that age. Adults have decided that they do not want kids learning to drive and learning to handle alcohol at the same time. Since many of them use their car to drive to work and some help support their families it has been determined that letting them drive younger is much more productive than letting them drink younger. The thinking is, that with 5 years experience driving introducing alcohol will not lead to as many fatalities. In the same way, drinking in public is connected to bad behavior like fighting, riots and being a public nuisance. It has been determined that it is better for public safety to restrict the use of alcohol to confined areas... Like restaurants, bars etc where people can determine if you have had enough before they sell you anymore.
I know right! Most tourists complain about the drinking age. Youth can buy guns and drive at a young age and they want the US to hand them alcohol rights so they can drive around with liquor and a gun in their hands, really? Maybe it is smarter to let them get used to driving and handling a gun first. Youth is a temperamental time when they need parents and community support. Also having people staggering around drunk in public is wrong to subject other citizens and their children to. There are appropriate places to have open alcohol where they're festivities and it is legal. We keep to these laws across the nation, not just the South. There are even DRY counties where liquor is not even sold! 😳

100% the drinking age is tied to driving. There were crazy high drunk driving deaths when the drinking age was lower. Unfortunately, I think that number is going up again regardless. Being able to access all the "newer" drugs (and alcohol) is the reason (I believe).
During the Vietnam War, the drinking age in America was lowered to 18 because Americans could fight and die in Vietnam but could not even be able to have a beer in the United States. However, it wasn’t long before the legal drinking age was raised to 21 because of the burgeoning number of traffic accidents and traffic deaths.
I'm sorry but you're full of crap. It sounds good though and when said with conviction as you did I'm sure a lot of people believe you. The driving age has been 16 since 1926 it has nothing to do with the reasons you stated. I believe drinking age was determined by individual states until 1984 when Reagan signed into law the Federal drinking age saying you had to be 21 to purchase liquor. The stated didn't have to agree but if they didn't they would be punished by the federal government in the form of denial of federal monies. Naturally all the states went along with it. I can understand denying alcohol until 21 but at the same time I believe if you are old enough to vote and be drafted then you are old enough to buy alcohol.
If you hear a southerner say "God bless you" they mean that in a good way, it's when you hear them say "Bless your heart" which can mean a variety of different things depending on context.
As a judge in the South, I can say that it would be very rare to see someone put in jail for drinking alcohol in a public place where it's forbidden. That would generally only happen if the person was being really disruptive or violated other laws. It's usually only a fine and/or court costs. And alcohol laws are becoming more lenient in many places.
You can be drunk but not have any open alcohol. I believe New Orleans you can & maybe a couple other "party" places (if it's in plastic cups), but 99% of the US is no drinking in public.
Im sure people are nice everywhere in the US, but people do things like waving to strangers, hold the door for everyone, and exchanging pleasantries a little more commonly than other places.

In the US, people with southern accents are sometimes looked down on and looked at as being dumb and uneducated. In general Southerners are known for being warm and friendly whereas Northerners (Yankees) are cold and rude. (This is a stereotype that isn't always true) 2nd - SEC stands for South Eastern Conference. This is a division of college athletics that many southern states are a member of. There are many other divisions in college sports... This includes all sports played at the college level, not just football. Rivalries between different schools and conferences can become very heated! NFL, National Football League is our professional football league. Most players who play football in college aspire to play in the NFL. 3rd - What is the south... Look up "Mason Dixon Line" this goes back to the US civil war. The Mason Dixon line is the imaginary border between the North and the South. (Pennsylvania / Maryland border) 4th - Laws - States have different laws, even cities and counties within a state can be different. The only real uniform law is the US Constitution. Many places frown on drinking in public, while some places do not. And yes, there are places you can be arrested! 5th - Churches, Yes churches are really like that. But not all of them. Religion is part of our way of life in the South, among other things, we are know for our "Blue Laws". these laws restrict certain behaviors, specifically on Sunday. Such as not being able to buy alcohol before a certain time. 6th - "Put your money where your mouth is". This is an expression that means to show or prove what you are saying with action instead of just words. It can also be used to challenge someone to prove what they are saying is true. Another expression is "Put up or shut up" ie; do it or quit talking about it. 7th - The Mercer House (Johnny Mercer), a historical house in Savannah, GA that is essentially a museum. No, it's still not always an insult. Bless you heart can be an honest show of affection or concern. People say it to me when they know my husband died and they mean it. Yes, it CAN mean Damn, they're stupid, but not always.
In support of your argument, I've come up with a better way of explaining "Bless your heart". The person is just showing verbally how it pains them to see you in "that position". If you suffered a loss of a loved one OR if you've said or done something stupid, the Southerner if just expressing the heartache they feel for you.
One thing to remember about the drinking age, we can also drive as young as 14 in some places, being a new driver and getting unrestricted access to alcohol doesn't mix well....
I’m from South Carolina and I love biscuits and gravy. A biscuit in the USA is a small bread. It has a bit of a firm crust and soft interior. Really good ones are usually light and fluffy. It’s paired with sausage gravy. The gravy has flour, milk, meat (typically sausage), and some spices.

Everyone wants to visit the big cities. They should check out the smaller towns and communities they are full of history, kayaking, fishing, swimming ana lot of other entertainment.
1) The South is from Texas heading east towards the Atlantic coast, roughly. It goes as far north as the Carolinas and Tennessee and Kentucky. It's a matter of debate whether Virginia should be included in it. 2) Yes, Protestant churches are much more engaging in the south than typical European churches, in my experience, though you *can* find those types of church in Europe if you look hard enough. How formal they are really varies though (in terms of dress); some are that way, but some aren't. It depends. 3) People typically like their local college football teams or the one they went to, but they definitely don't have to. Some just pick one and get extremely dedicated to it, or it can be a family tradition to like one team because their great-grandfather went to the school, or something like that. It varies. But, you know, if everyone was reasonable they would obviously prefer the UT Longhorns. ;) 4) The weather in the South is not as great as he's indicating. It IS warmer than the North, obviously, but probably too warm for most people's taste in most places from something like late May through the end of September, and the humidity in some areas will feel really tough. I'm a Texan, and I love the state, but even I can't stand the weather in the summer most of the time. 5) "Put your money where your mouth is" means to put money or take action on things you talk about or care about a lot. So if someone really cares about their city they will take care of it. It's an expression that indicates someone will "follow through" on what they say they care about by doing something real towards it, like putting down money or something other action. 6) The not consuming alcohol in public is general for public safety and decency, in order to try to avoid excessive public drunkenness. It's the same basic principle as, say, not having sex in public. Sex is fine and legal, but it doesn't belong in the public sphere because the rest of the public shouldn't have to put up with someone else doing it in front of them. That's the same basic policy idea behind the restriction on public consumption of alcohol. I'm not necessarily saying I agree with that, but living here you get used to it and may even come to like it because it's not super strictly enforced in most places, and it frequently works as a tool to give the police an excuse to arrest someone who's making a nuisance of themselves.

There were too many accidents with young drunks that they changed the law. We can drive at 16 and many people underage drink. You can buy a hunting rifle at 18 but you cannot buy a handgun until 21. College football was around before the NFL. Many states do not have an NFL team but have multiple college teams. Finally, Southerners are nice people who speak in respectful ways, so people think they are nicer, but we are all generally nice in the US.
I don’t know why so many Europeans equate football to the NFL. Maybe because Pro-league soccer (🙄”football”🙄) is what they follow. Maybe because they don’t get the idea of school sports (starting in middle school), and how it can be so integrated into school life (cheerleading, marching bands, pep clubs and rallies, Homecoming, etc). NFL doesn’t have the tradition, the extreme tailgating, and I’d argue, the loyalty! I’m a Buckeye who’s lived in Georgia for 25 years, and I still watch every Ohio State game! Also - the largest 15 or so stadiums in the US are COLLEGE FOOTBALL stadiums, with the three biggest in just the Big Ten conference seating over 100,000 people. And they sell out for every game. The depth and breadth of football in the US is NOT the NFL. The NFL is entertainment. People feel a part of their college teams. If you want to REALLY understand football in America, and more about Americans themselves, learn about college football- or even take a deep dive into high school football.

I think you have to throw the largest state in the Confederacy in there: Texas, as well as maybe even Oklahoma, and the home of Richmond, the capital of the Condederacy, Virginia. Texas and, sadly, my beloved Virginia were also Confederate. Kentucky was a border state, not Confederate, though it is considered by many to be Southern. Though not *exactly* Southern, technically, Texas is a sort of 3-way cross, being culturally Southern, Western, Southwestern, and Mexican in various ways and concentrations as one moves around the state.
18:23 the reason they have open container laws is to try to mitigate people being out in public while visibly intoxicated. It’s one thing if you want to get drunk at home or in a club or a bar, but being drunk out in the community where kids are can become problematic. I will also say that they usually won’t arrest you unless you’re acting disorderly or seem way too drunk. They usually just issue a citation and ask you to pour it out.
The getting arrested for having alchohol is usually only in very specific places or in certain circumstances, like usually you would only get ticketed/arrested for having a bottle if you are like stumbling drunkenly down the street with an open bottle of some alcohol.
The reason for not drinking in public is because of how people act when they get drunk. Getting into fights, damaging property, disturbing the peace, bothering other people, etc.
I use it in about 3 ways. As a "that's so thoughtful of you". As an " Oh I feel so bad for so and so because they're really going through it" or as a "Man you are dumber than dirt. Did your mama drop you on your head?".😂😂
"Bless your heart" is great. It can be an insult (you are not getting it / incapable of understanding) but it can also be sympathetic depending on the circumstance. For example, a child falls and skins their knee you may hear someone say "Oh bless their heart!" which is not an insult in this case.
Years ago,in the 60s, I left my cool house. I went out through the garage. It was 100+ degrees out. When I opened the garage door it almost knocked me over. You weren't listening, its not the alcohol its the open container in public. We don't have a problem with it. Just drink in appropriate places.
The houses of which he speaks are open to the public. They are historic buildings with tours that take you through so that you can learn the history of the people who lived in the area. They are restored to their original glory and are beautiful to behold.
I'm from Detroit, and have lived all over the US. Southern Hospitality is a real thing. They're just nicer to each other in the south, and even nicer to people they don't know. New Orleans is my adopted "hometown". If I could have been born anywhere, I'd choose New Orleans. The best people I know are there. (Some people complain that New Orleans people are rude. I'll take "honest and rude" over "polite liars".) Those NOLA "rude people" will treat you like they knew you from birth, if you're good to them too.
The term "bless your heart" has a duel meaning, one is a blessing, and the other is "this person is so stupid" The reason for the alcohol laws is not only the religion factor, but also the problems that come from people being intoxicated. My personal favorite southern food is fried catfish, favorite desert is banana pudding.
in the religious sense youre supposed to pray to those who offend or hurt you. there really isnt a positive to it. its like looking at someone as a sick person so you want god to bless them to get them to be a better person so they arent sick anymore (or so they dont do whatever they did to you to someone else)
"Bless Your Heart" is not an insult. The SEC is NOT the only conference in college football in the south. The ACC is also a big college conference here. We have a lot of problems with drinking and driving. Young people think they can drive when they shouldn't and end up killing innocent people. He makes it sound like Georgia is the most wonderful state in the south, but every state is great. I'm from South Carolina and we are a wonderful place to live.
It’s more about modeling proper behavior to the younger, more impressionable people. It’s also harking back to more old-fashioned views of one’s contribution to the community. Noone is fond of the town drunk who openly shows their vice and “failing”. Yes, there will always be the odd drunk in public, but having a law against open containers in public “theoretically” will limit such behavior. In practice and practicality, nothing is going to stop people from doing as they do.
Other countries both European and Asian have drinking in public and it’s fine. Likewise if you’re in the outside seating in a restaurant you can drink beer and it’s fine, the law has good intentions but doesn’t actually make sense. It would probably be better to crack down on out and out drunken behavior while leaving having a single beer on a picnic alone eh?
One of my favorite southern foods youll find in S. Louisiana, is crawfish etoufee. Its a cajun stew served over rice made with crawfish, a roux ( flour browned in butter), herbs and spices. Around New Orleans they cook it creole style, with tomatoes. I prefer the cajun over the creole.
The funny thing about that "southerners are dumb" sentiment is; the biggest rocket-science college is in Alabama, the NASA control center is in Texas, and the launch station is in Florida.

Southerners are the nicest and most hospitable people anywhere, patriotic, charming, and full of good old common sense - or as we may say "horse sense" - and as a society and culture, pretty damn smart too.
I lived in Houston 12 years. I worked 3pm to 11pm. I spent a LOT of time at Johnson Space Center? there almost everyday? I had an uncle that worked for Boeing Aerospace in Witchata Ks. He helped put the first monkey into space. When I visited Johnson, one could drive up to ANY building, go in, there was virtually NO security? It was a wonderland? I saw the room where they were dissecting moon rocks, I watched astronauts training in a big pool of water, with a full scale lunar landing module to train for weightlessness, I got to tour the Space Shuttle mockup, All with no security? I got to see the command center. I spent a LOT of time there? It was a HUGE area? Had to drive from one building to the next. A BIG complex. Some of the best memories of my life. Then, Challenger exploded? And they shut down 99% of everything to the public.

All you need are grits (yes, instant grits are available but the real thing is better), butter, cheese (like a shredded Muenster), peeled shrimps, salt and other seasonings to your taste.
Before the Viet Nam War, the drinking age was pretty much determined by the state and even counties within the state. Generally, a young person had to reach the age of majority to drink, which was 21 years at the time. During the war, there was great pressure on lawmakers to allow 18-year-olds the ability to legally buy and consume alcohol since if you are old enough to sacrifice your life for your country in war, you should be able to drink at 18. This also applied to voting age that was previously set at 21 in a federal election. For a period of years of 18-year-old drinking laws there were so many automobile accidents and other events that were killing our youth. At that point the Federal Government stepped in and moved the drinking age back to 21, and the highway deaths dropped dramatically. Moral to the story: 18- to 21-year-olds can't hold their liquor and drive safely. Today, 21 remains the minimum age to purchase and consume alcohol by Federal law, but 18-year-olds are permitted to vote.
college football is huge. The professional players get drafted out of the colleges and universities (the NFL Draft). Most people cheer on the college or university they attended, but if you went to a small school you might cheer for the local team or pick one you like.
I think the phrase "bless your heart" grew out of an attempt at politeness. In a society where good manners are important, even insulting somebody must be done in a way that seems pleasant on the face of it.
The phrase "put your money where your mouth is" means Don't just say that something is important to you, actually do something about it. Example- One person could say "it's sad that homeless people are going hungry" while someone else might buy them a meal, or help them to find a job. That person has put their money where their mouth is.

It’s very very common for Americans to move around the United States no different than a person in Germany moving to the United Kingdom, the United States is almost identical and size as the entirety of Europe
My dad is a pastor and trust me bro they party hard there. Dancing, singing, etc. it gets hype. It depends on what kind of belief the church is on how wild they get but my dad’s church is crazy hype dude.
College Football is an obsession! NFL recruits college graduates who played in school! One usually supports the school they attended as well as the schools from their States!
College football is very popular in the US, and not just in the South. People who graduate from college go back after graduating to attend games. Those who never went to college will support colleges near where they live.
I'm from Indiana, the Midwest. They have slightly loosened our liquor laws. Used to be NO sales of alcohol on Sundays unless you are at a restaurant. Now you can buy alcohol 12-7(or 8?). M-Sat it is 7am-3am--they want you to have 4 hrs to sober up... YES, if you drink alcohol just walking down the street, you can either get fined or arrested for public intoxication. The CRAZY thing is they don't want you to drive while drunk--ok, you know you're drunk so you walk home. WRONG! You will get arrested even though you are not driving, cuz now you are publicly drunk! We've had ppl(usually only the famous 1s make the news) that were getting a ride home. The police pulled them over. They arrest the driver because they are drunk. But they also arrest the passenger because they tell them to step out of the car and see they are drunk too!!! Some restaurants/bars have drinking outside in a fenced in area. So many contradictions...
I grew up with a mother and grandmother who were very traditional southern cooks. Cornbread was a must, home grown corn made with butter and bacon grease, lots of greens I refused to eat as a child, potatoes, and either pork or beef roast were the normal meals in my family. I do love fried green tomatoes, especially if they are home grown, shrimp and grits, and fresh caught fish, usually catfish, bream, or crappie. However, I love to try all kinds of foods, especially foreign foods. As far as how to pick which college football team you cheer for, there are four types. You choose the school closest to you, you are following family tradition, you pick the most popular/winning team in your state and are labeled as a band wagon, you cheer for the school you attend but sometimes you attend that school only because you were already a fan (see first three reasons if that is the case) . I grew up in Tennessee, but was a University of Memphis fan because I could not understand why I was supposed to cheer for a team that was over 4 hr away (University of Tennessee at Knoxville, yes there is more than one UT campus) versus one that was 2 hr. Then I lived in Georgia for awhile and became UGA fan. I still cheer for Memphis too! I grew up in a dry county too, but the law was than only alcohol that was under a alcohol percentage could be sold. So, no hard liquor only beer, wine, malts, etc. You are allowed to drink in public unless it is posted. Downtown Nashville and Beale Street in Memphis would not be the bar scene it is if it was against the law. When you can get arrested is for too much consumption, aka drunk and disorderly, and start causing problems.
Most southerners pride themselves on being friendly & helpful to others & I believe in general other US ppl from different areas would consider southerners much nicer than most. As for southern foods my favorite is a good corn meal fish fry served with cheese grits & hush puppies For churches & gospel music, at some churches it really is an exciting & amazing experience, ppl will shout out praises & sing so loud & dance & its such an awesome experience to see the ppl around you get so moved by God that they just have to let it out
I'm from Texas, and I have a pretty heavy accent. People, especially from up North, tend to think I'm stupid. Thats ok, I like it, it gives me the advantage 😉 Drinking is a privilege, buying a gun is a right. Driving is a privilege, owning a gun is a right. The 2nd Amendment protects our right to own a gun, there is no such Amendment for the other things people want to compare it to. That's the difference
“Bless your heart” CAN mean someone is stupid, but it also has other meanings depending on how it’s used. It can also be a term of pity, well wishing, and sympathy at the same time. An example would be hearing that a person is sick or injured or May be down on their luck. Someone might respond with “Bless his/her Heart”. It can be used as an endearing term as well. Example: a child gives a compliment, or gives a gift, especially something handmade or that they gathered themself. This gentleman is not mistaken, but there is a little more to this phrase that is not well understood if you did not grow up with it. Think about what immediately preceded a the use of the phrase. Yes, hurricane parties are a thing. Some people here are not built for cold weather, some of us are. I moved from Florida to Maine for a few years and it was paradise. We love people and genuinely like to be helpful. It brings us joy. We work hard and play harder. It’s a very different culture than much of the country. People in Maine were also mostly nice, but I did experience significant culture shock in the rest of New England. Putting your money where your mouth is means when you say things, they are not superficial or just for show. If I say I want to help, I’m not just being nice, I genuinely want to help. That brings up a good point: Look at Southern Baptist church videos to see churches that come alive. Southern Baptists have their own way of cursing you out especially preachers and elder women. My favorite curse phrase is ( you can drop to your knee, put your little hand together, and pray to whoever you pray to that I care at this moment in time.) The one thing that he didn't say in his video is that Southerners will do, and we do know that people are watching, but we will still do it. We will correct your child if they step out of line. We watch out for everyone's safety, especially children.
Putting your money where your mouth is means not just saying that you love your state or community, but that you also support it by spending locally within your city or state. It can also mean that charitable contributions that you make are directed toward helping your city, or state. It can also mean that you volunteer within your community, or vote for laws/politicians that are most beneficial to your area.
The city i live in just marked out their "drinking area" basically the whole downtown area you can drink outside anywhere, anytime. It encompasses just under 7 acres (2.8 hectares)
Liquor laws are complicated. They cary by State and County. Sometimes by city or town. When I visited Branson, MO, I could buy hard liquor as well as beer and wine in grocery and convenience stores. In San Antonio, TX, we can buy hard liquor only in liquor stores, which are closed on Sundays. We can buy beer and wine in grocery and convenience stores. Hours are limited, and the store can be open longer than alcohol sales are allowed. Convenience stores are frequently at gas stations. In Pennsylvania, you have to buy alcohol at State stores. Hard liquor is bourbon, whiskey, vodka, rum, scotch, etc. It's determined by alcohol content.
I recently learned that there are over 73,000 college football players. Just the players. Wow! I'm a University of Minnesota 'Golden Gopher.' Drinking age has everything to do with this country being a CAR CULTURE. Driving under the influence of alcohol is a tremendously significant issue here. I lost a college student, when, he passed out behind his wheel in the winter and froze to death. He was parked in his garage. N one knew he was there. But, the people whose lives are altered, ruined, or even lost, typically are Not the drunks who caused the car crash, but instead are the innocent passengers in other cars. You have to drive to live here, pretty much.
As a southern American, the best southern food (in my opinion) is a breakfast food called ‘biscuits and gravy’ it’s just biscuits with a type of gravy poured on top (and the gravy is usually just made of meat grease like bacon grease, milk, flour, and sometimes pieces of sausage added in). It’s simple but really good!
My favorite southern dish is Grits or maybe Fried Okra. Of course Sweet Tea is totally Southern and the best! When they say the “South” they are generally referring to states that were in the Confederacy during the Civil War. The culture is very different in the South compared to the North. Texas is often considered part of the South and sometimes considered part of the West, but west of Texas is not considered part of the South. When I was a kid we could buy a gun at 16. And I owned my first 22 rifle when I was 16 (even though I got it when I was 12, but it technically wasn’t mine until i turned 16). And we learn how to drive cars young too. I had my drivers license at 16, but my moped license at 14, but my dad taught me how to drive at 10, and would let me drive on our property, and on country roads but not in the city until I was 16 (yes. I was a tall kid. As tall as my mom when I was 10, so I could easily drive).
"money where their mouth is" means a person can talk about change and nothing is spent or nothing happens. This expression is saying the person talks about change and ACTUALLY spends the enerrgy ("money") to make it happen for real.
When we say "the South" it is a name we give to a region of the United States. We are generally speaking about the states in the SouthEastern United States. These states include: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and the eastern portion of Texas. Where other states like California, Arizona, and New Mexico do make up our southern border, they are considered the West or Southwest. In fact, Hawaii is actually our southern most state, but that certainly is not considered "the South". Hawaii is its entirely own region in and of itself. When we say "the South" it refers to a certain regional culture with it's own foods, music, accents, values, etc. One of the reasons those states are thought of as a grouping dates back to the Civil War when the states below the Mason Dixon line (the border between Pennsylvania and Maryland) succeeded from the Union. Back then, those other states that are south, but we do not consider "the South" like Arizona and New Mexico, weren't established yet.
Best food I've had in the South was in New Orleans! OMG it was phenomenal. Jambalaya, Crawfish Etouffe, Po' boys, Muffalletas, Bananas Foster, Beignets, Turtle soup... AMAZING!
By the way, for the strangest church service you'll ever attend, go to the Drive In Church in Daytona Beach, Florida. They turned an old drive in movie into a huge, open-air church. The screen now has a covered area for a small choir and a pulpit for the minister. When you drive in, they give you to-go communion, which you hold onto, and partake when it's that part of the service. The minister will often ask for "first timers" to turn on their headlights so the minister can see and point out. After service, you go into what was the projection room, which is now a fellowship hall with donuts and coffee. Then take a walk along gorgeous Daytona Beach. Great way to spend a Sunday morning!
I’m from the South. Here are some of my favorite foods I grew up on. -Chicken and Dumplings -Biscuits and Gravy -Fried Chicken (Smothered or Nashville hot). -Fried Okra -Pulled Pork -Fried Green Tomatoes -Cobbler -Collard Greens -Catfish -Slaw And I’m just gonna say it… corn liquor
The alcohol age is crazy to me too. My son is a combat medic in the army. He went to bootcamp at 17 yrs old and was a sergeant yrs before he could legally have a beer. Its crazy to me. Lol. The south is the greatest though! From Louisiana myself! We treat everyone like family
Deep frying and meat are not the only parts of southern cuisine. Greens, beans, okra, and seafood are very healthy. Southerners are great gardeners. Also many people don't drink alcohol.
The South is basically the former Confederate States. And yes, the Confederate flag is from the Civil War. Imo, not much better than the flag of WWII Germany - just unfortunately more socially acceptable here.
As a Southerner, we have zero choice but to be respectful. Well those of us with good sense. Our parents didn’t give us an option. Also, so many people think FL isn’t Southern & it REALLY is. Both good & bad.
Texas, east is the South. Technically Virginia & down is the South. I’ve lived in VA. It’s not Southern to me. & I don’t agree with all of what the beginning of the video says. We have a HUGE culture of leftovers, so we don’t eat it all. & there are plenty of people who wish they could go back to segregation & slavery. The North is worse in some areas.
As a native Manhattanite, I moved to Savannah, GA cuz it is not a typical Southern city. It has a substantial Irish (heritage) population and is very liberal. Although it has all the charm of the South and is "southern" it is very welcoming to communities that are not welcoming to other groups. Especially LGBTQ+. I moved there before the US allowed marriage equality to all persons and the locals respected my out-of-state marriage and referred to my spouse as my husband, even the police department, fire department, and hospitals. Savannah is a wonderful city and extremely hospitable. But unfortunately, I would not rate it as a typical southern city if you are from outside main-stream America.
"Go to jail": If you are intoxicated and rowdy, you will go to jail. If you are on the street in a strict alcohol zone, you will get a warning. Each state has different laws and some states leave teh control to the local jurisdictions. This is a relic of the United States prohibition era. Some towns have established zones where alcohol on the streets may be consumed.
