For most people in the USA, the word "Patriotic" does not mean 'agree with the government's policies" it means " believe in the ideas the nation was founded on"

To be Patriotic to me is standing up for our Constitution, and I feel our government is going against it everyday.

Most self appointed "patriots" that I've seen in media seem more fascist than American. "Patriot", unfortunately, gets used more often by Americans who have anti-American sentiments...like Trump followers.

Americans are European, African, Asian, South American, Australian, Caribbean, we are everything. We have rain forests, deserts, mountains, prairies, tropics, and artic regions. We have samples of everything within our own borders. We even have blue-eyed blond Germans here. There's an Octoberfest three miles from where I live. I have cowboys living a mile from my house. With our territories we can travel around the world without a passport. I have a passport, but I rarely get to use it.

I have worked for several European-based companies and no matter how many times people are told that America is huge, they don't believe it until they get here and try to navigate. For example: a new manager arrives in the Chicago office and phones up the California based employee and says "can you come into Chicago for a meeting this afternoon?" Uhhmmm, no, that's a 4 hour flight and I lose 2 hours. "I could have flown to Turkey from Heathrow in that time" Yep - welcome to America. Europeans watching this video: Many of my friends want to know where to go once they have seen NYC, LA, San Francisco, Chicago, and Miami/Disney for the "American Experience": New Orleans, Nashville, Washington DC, Key West (why didn't you go there when you were in Miami?), Denver/Rocky Mountains, anywhere in the Pacific NW. Once You see the rich diversity the US has to offer, you will understand why international travel doesn't have the same attraction for Americans as it does for others (it's not just the financial aspect).

This American travelled as much as I could - I went without new furniture, cars and larger homes and spent my money on plane tickets, Eurail passes and hostel fees. Now that I’m older it’s easier to travel here at home, and there’s so much to see in America! I love my country.

I grew up in a small town in Colorado. Ranching (raising livestock, like sheep and cattle) and coal mining were the primary industries. Many of my classmates had to ride a bus over 1 hour TO school; our area was that vast. My school did not have a soccer team. We had a rodeo team. This was completely normal, as far as we knew. I love that the US has so many different topographies and regional specialties. I've been blessed to live in and visit numerous states and regions! As well as numerous countries and continents.

Actually, the #1 reason for Americans not traveling abroad is because we don't get much paid time off from work to travel far away. Once someone retires, there might be more time to travel, but then, money can become an issue. Taking an entire family to Europe would definitely be costly if you could get enough time off.

Yeah, at times I've had as much as 5 days paid time off. That was usually reserved for visiting family in other parts of the country, which are almost as far away (flying time) as it takes to get from New York to London. Other times, I didn't get paid time off.

Cowboys are common in the Mid-West/Texas and NOT the south. As for the firearms, you have to understand that firearms were so important to the founders of the US that they put it in the Constitution right after free speech. It's in our tradition to have firearms to prevent our own government becoming tyrannical.

Hey, I’m 77. I grew up in a hunting family with rifles and hand guns. My high school was cool with the seniors in particular would be gone days in October or November due to Deer and Elk hunting season. During that time it wasn’t unusual to see a truck in the parking lot with a rifle in the grip un rack in the back window. Personally I own two handguns. Big deal I’m not interested in proving I’m bad.

I grew up in Rural America, and spent most of my career in cities and suburbs of cities, but have recently moved back to the countryside. My brother-in-law who lives in a big city made a really funny comment when he visited and we were out driving around. He asked, Why do you wave at everyone driving by? I never really thought about until he said that. it's something we just do. Rural people tend to know all the neighbors who live within several miles,.. while in the city you might not even know the guy who lives next door.

In the US, when you pay with a card, there is a space on either the receipt or the screen that asks about tipping. This is where you put in the amount of tip you want to leave, do some quick math, and write the final total of how much is to be charged to your card. Then you sign it (the receipt). The standard used to be 15%, which is basically $5 for every $30. But recently, the norm has been 20%. Where I struggle, as an American, is how much to tip when my bill is only $2-$3 (a hotdog, for example). It seems insulting to ever leave less than a $3 tip, so I end up tipping 100%(+) in that scenario.

My favorite German food is Sauerbraten but its difficult to get because there aren't many German restaurants. The availability to own guns is largely determined by the state and county where you live. For example, I moved to an area where I can own a gun and carry it without requiring any governmental approval/permission. Also, when visiting the States, its best if you don't talk about politics, religion, aborition, or guns. Tschüss!!

There are five ways to get a gun in the US. First, you can buy one from a retailer like A sporting goods store or a specialty gun store. This requires a federal background check that shows you are not prohibited from purchasing a gun. In some states you must also wait some number of days before you can take your gun home. The second way is to build your own gun from parts. If you are prohibited from buying guns this is illegall. Some states have laws against it as well, but it is legal at the federal level. The third way is to buy one "private party", meaning you buy it from another person who owned it before you. This is also prohibited in some states but is (for the current time) legal at the federal level. The fourth way to get a gun is to buy an antique or replica antique. These are guns that use old styles of ammunition or propellant or were made before the year 1898. Included in this category are Gattling guns, the crank-fired repeating guns seen in many Western films. Once again, some states prohibit certain people from owning these guns but the federal government does not. The fifth way is to get one illegally. You can steal one (there are many, many, many gun thefts in America) or you can buy one from the black market (most of such guns are stolen). There are between 250 million and 1 billion guns in the US, depending how you want to define what a gun is. It is hard to say for certain how many there are because many people are reluctant to say honestly how many guns they have. Some other things to consider about guns in America. First, anyone prohibited from owning a gun by federal law is also prohibited from owning any modern ammunition. Second, air guns, some as powerful as many hunting rifles, are completely legal for anyone to own under federal law. I know that in Germany there is a limit to how powerful an air gun may be (is it 15 joules?) but in the US there is no limit at all. If you wish, you may own an air cannon that can lauch bowling balls at targets a kilometer away. Edit: There is a sixth way to get a gun in the US. You may inherit it or receive it as a gift, provided you are not prohibited from owning a gun by law.

Chris, many of us are not interested in owning guns. I have been robbed in my own house, and I still do not want to own a gun. And cowboys are mostly out West. We also don't own a flag. We never eat fast food. I cook fresh food for my family most nights. Germans excel at baked goods and pastry AND chocolate!! I am overweight. Sorry! We have every type of climate, from Arctic Alaska to gorgeous Hawaii. We also have every type of terrain, from desert to tropical rainforest. We have many immigrants. Personally, I think immigrants are America's greatest strength, I welcome everyone to come here. But many people feel threatened by them. By the way, I visited Germany many years ago. It is very beautiful. I hope you will come to America to visit.

One of my favorite German foods is a simple one potato pancakes as we call them where I'm from. Consist of mashed potato egg flour onion (chopped) salt pepper garlic and sometimes some crumbled up bacon all mixed in a bowl till you get a consistency of thick pancake batter then pan fried in an iron skillet in just enough oil to coat the pan until golden brown. Use up left over mashed taters this way or use them to make homemade potato bread.

You can find people who engage in cowboy country all over the nation, but the farther you get from the Southwest the weirder locals will view it. Growing up in Wisconsin, I knew a handful of men who wore cowboy boots and hats at all times, but they were eccentric for it. Whereas in Colorado or Arizona, people wouldn't think much about it. As for my favorite German food, Wisconsin is super German (and Norwegian and Dutch), but the best I can come up with for food is bratwurst, which is such a phenomenon in Wisconsin summer cookouts that its part of our identity as a state. People will visit and make a point to try our brats just like they do our cheese curds

The country/cowboy culture came from People who settled in the Appalachian region the scots Irish & English ECT then it spread out. Italians took western like films made them into spaghetti westerns then we took that idea & make great films. Same with food people consider Italian most of which came about in the 20th century from Italian migrants. That's what makes the US so good is it's a mix & we adopt popular traditions ECT from others.

In AZ as long as you don’t have a felony on your record nor a previous history of mental illness that would cause concern, you can buy a firearm the same day. Usually takes them an hour or two to run the background check. Much quicker if you have an FFL (federal firearm license). That gives you the right to buy and sell all the guns and attachments not usually allowed to the civilian market the same as a gun shop would be allowed but leaves you subject to unannounced search and inventory of your firearms by the ATF the exact same as a gun store

Ok so for foods that are German in the USA many Americans won’t realize they are German foods. They have become part of the American food norms. Schnitzel has two main examples of this in the Midwest in Indiana particularly they have a “pork tenderloin sandwich” and if you look up a picture of this you’ll know it’s absolutely schnitzel! In Texas the descendant of schnitzel is called “chicken fried steak”. And believe it or not when I talk about my mom’s red cabbage recipe they go oh braised red cabbage I love that! Also people love “Amish noodles” and that is definitely a descendant of Spätzle! German culture deeply impacted American culture!

3:32 Being able to purchase a firearm in America isn't particularly difficult if you don't have a criminal record. It mainly comes down to which state you're trying to purchase that firearm in. I live in the southwest (Arizona) and we are pretty much still the wild wild west. It's not uncommon to see people riding on horses on the side of the road and it isn't uncommon to see horse property in the middle of the city. I haven't met anyone who does NOT own AT LEAST ONE gun. And it's not uncommon to see people open carry. For some of us, it's just something normal. I guess it just depends on where in the US you live, but more so, whether or not you believe that the gun breaks the law, or the person committing a crime with the gun is the one breaking the law. We are protected by the 2nd amendment and personally, if put in a dangerous situation (my family or myself) I would rather be safe than sorry. Nothing worse than an afterthought. I fly a US flag in front of my house all year and come from a military family. America is huge. I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon) and every summer my family would travel south through southern California to see my uncle, then through Arizona to see my maternal grandparents, and through to Texas to see my paternal grandparents. It was quite a trek, but there was something awesome about driving down the Pacific Coast highway that made the hours on the road seem to fly by (well, at least for the first part of the trip!).
@TrevorClarke
@TrevorClarke 2 месяца назад
The cost of travel is definitely a thing. Even today, a family of four could have a long weekend (3-4 days) vacation in a neighboring (or relatively nearby) state with a hotel, food, and plenty of activities of $1000 or less while the airfare for 1 person to eastern Europe might cost more than that. My father was from the UK and we travelled to visit family only twice in my life because the airfare was so much (even a very good deal might have cost $2000 for all four of us) that it wouldn't be worthwhile to stay for less than a couple of weeks. Staying with family for part of that would help with costs, as would more cost effective excursions, but taking 2-3 week off work and school is not easy. That's the other thing about Americans, while many of us might receive 3-4 weeks of vacation time per year, it's not common to take that all in a single block of time but spread out throughout the year.

(Evidently someone thought Germany didnt have indoor plumbing, toilets???) As crazy as it sounds, that kind of information really was a world away. It was a different time and people didn't have videos showing them cultures and places outside their small geographic area.. With the internet and social media (particularly RU-vid), people's horizons really have expanded. I don't believe you would find a teenager who would assume the previous mentioned toilet situation in this day and age. 😊 By the way, I didn't assume that because my brother had lived in Germany when I was small. So I knew it was a 1st world like the US. Some people though... 😮😂

I grew up in Minnesota in the area "Grumpy Old Men" was filmed in... That state was settled by Germans, Sweeds, Polish to name a few... Back in 2004 I moved to Fort Worth Texas, that is a 26 hour solid drive..I am living in a part of Fort Worth that was a mostly black community... Now in the past 20 years it is still mostly black, tho there is a more non blacks like my self living here.. Texas as a state dose have allot of folks from Central and South American country's.... Something to keep in mind, America has 50 states, tho only 48 you can drive to from one state to another. Alaska you will need to drive into Canada or take a fairy for a few days to get there... Hawaii you gotta fly there unless you own your own boat and it better be 10meter or bigger.. I think you can do it with a 5m boat long as you do not run into any storms, so weather would make it risky in that small of a boat.

To answer your question on what foods we think are from Germany. American media has taught most of us (probably wrongly) that Germans eat huge plates of sausages, bread rolls, sauerkraut and assorted mustards.

On language, there are two types of Americans. About 20% of households speak a language other than English at home, and another ~40% have learned at least a basic intro to another language or several. Most if the rest don't really care as long as you can gesture out the bus schedule or your point to your coffe order or whatever. These days, screenshots of text in the other language are pretty common. I've typed more than one note or order into a phone so the person can have their question or answer handy if they need it again later. Most people are pretty tolerant of accents and language learners, at least in cities and tourist areas. Then there are a few asses who can't get their mind around the fact that other languages exist. They are no fun, and often quite the bully unfortunately.

My German food picks come from my favorite German restaurant in Pittsburgh. Their wurst platter is great. Weisswurst is my favorite of the selection, and their sauerkraut is top-notch! Sadly, their spätzle is too Americanized for my taste.

One thing you might consider is rather than commenting on one American video from which to formulate an opinion, you might consider compiling several from which to formulate an opinion. WatchMojo is not the end all authority of American culture. Frankly, I don't know how accurate the claim that only about 30% of Americans own guns is, but I can tell you that the vast majority of Americans I know since we live in a free state own guns. Sadly states such as California and New York might skew the numbers, but having lived in several states, again, most Americans I know or have known own guns and are responsible gun owners at that.

regarding guns: it depends on the state. In states like NY and California, it's somewhat difficult. In other states, it's all too easy.

Cowboys are more of a Western thing than a Southern (south east) thing. And yeah, the whole cowboy thing is popular in Texas, but not really in New York. Gun access varies greatly among American states and cities. Walmart is an all-in-one store, and many of them sell firearms. Here in Ohio, a person may buy a handgun, rifle, or shotgun with a driver's license as long as he is 21 years old, has no felony convictions, has no domestic violence convictions, and was never found to be "incompetent" by a judge. That's what's required by Federal law. Fully automatic (machine guns) is illegal nationally without a special federal license. Likewise, one needs a federal license for "short barreled rifles," a rifle with a barrel less than 16 inches (41 cm). I'm from New England (North East), and we are largely indifferent to clam chowder. Personally, I prefer corn (maize) or fish chowder. A lot of Americans like sauerkraut and various sausages, and of course many Americans love German beer. A majority of Americans are overweight, from slightly to morbidly obese. Unless one just eats fresh vegetables, fruits, and meat, almost everything is loaded with HFCS, a maize-derived sugar substitute. Hardly anyone lives in the central plains states. One can drive 100 km/h for an hour without seeing a house. It's just miles and miles of maize and wheat fields. About a dozen families control nearly half of the resources in the USA. So, about 100 persons own more than about 300 million people combined. The USA is a rich country full of poverty. Different ethnic groups tend to be concentrated in specific places. The South West used to be part of Mexico, so there are a lot of Mexican-Americans there. African-Americans tend to be in the South and in industrial cities in the North. About 1/3 of New York City is Jewish. A lot of German Americans live in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

Sauerkraut! Thank goodness for Aldi. And I can enjoy it by itself. American sauerkraut though is super salty and tastes like it’s far past it’s shelf life. If you come to visit the US, don’t buy it from our grocery stores. It’s disgusting. I think I eat more sauerkraut than brat. Nothing else is needed on a brat. I like it with chicken fried steak too. It’s always on our 4th of July menu. I could make my own but it’s not necessary since we have Aldi here. I snag a case at a time. Note, that we love our Trader Joe’s as well and the family chain’s separation has given us more choices. Oddly, Trader Joe’s sauerkraut is not good 🤔. I think they somehow lost their roots from the Albrecht home in Essen (funny that they started in Essen 🤣). Trader Joe’s has more of a relaxed vibe here in the US and people tend to shop much longer and find way more groceries than intended (brilliant marketing) 💡…I do too and I love this store but for German food, I know Aldi has what I need. The alternative is over a 2 hour drive to get more authentic foods but even then, they’ve Americanized their selections, justifiably so since we’re in America . I had a German babysitter from 3-6 years old and when my parents worked 2 jobs each to support our large family. I learned German very well. I remember my Dad taking German as a foreign language in his return to College for more credits…and he was shocked everytime I would correct him 😂. That was a LONG time ago but with German courses in my education years, I’ve maintained my love for the language. At my age (old) it is not so fluid anymore but I do teach my granddaughter the language since her father is full German yet he doesn’t contribute to her life (die Flasche) nor speak it.

Bratwurst is popular across the USA - especially grilled outdoors during the Summer. And good bratwurst, comparable to German sausages, can still be found in areas with German heritage. (I lived in Germany for 3 years, and I miss the Weißwűrst.) The sad path to the typical American hot dog began with Oscar Mayer, a German immigrant who came to America from Bavaria as a teenager in 1873. He started his first meat shop in 1883, and the sausages and meats he offered were delicious & very popular. Unfortunately, after Oscar Mayer died in the 1950s, the company's products went downhill in quality. Oscar Mayer hot dogs, along with the cheap hot dogs of many of their competitors, are an embarrassment compared to German sausages. But decent bratwurst products can still be found in America - especially in areas with German heritage.

ethnicity distribution definitely does vary. in Texas and Cali for example, only speaking of Latinos, in Texas or California you’ll meet a ton of Mexican folks, but here in my state (New York) Puerto Ricans are seen much more than Mexicans

"Cowboy Culture" is mostly west of the Mississippi River. Re: Firearms. Both Pew Research and Gallup in, I think 2013, released reports saying that about 34% of households have at least one firearm. Looking at US Census numbers, that means about 135,000,000 people have ready access to firearms. While any unnecessary death or injury by any means is tragic, it's a tiny percentage who misuse their firearms. If gun owners, and members of their households, were as violent as certain sectors of our political spectrum would have you believe, deaths would be in the millions.

The wealth of America is misunderstood by the person who made that video. There is a wide range of income levels throughout the US, true, but the real show of wealth is that the poorest among us still have things like air conditioning, a car or truck, the latest cellphones, the latest computers, WiFi with some of the best high speed internet and good signal, running water. All of those things are not guaranteed but are extremely common here. And there are still highly developed European countries that have much less wealth in general than us. Also, other than the oil barons of the Middle East, America is home to the majority of the richest and most wealthy individual people in the entire world bar none. And as far as the percentages of people who own guns, there are a lot more people in large cities, one large city may be as much or more densely populated than 1000 square miles of the land around it. But it is guaranteed that almost the entire country outside of the big city environments owns guns and shoots them regularly wether for sport such as competition shooting or hunting, or for recreation such as privately shooting on one’s own property or a gun range, or one of the hundreds if RU-vid channels that are all about shooting cool guns at random things to either test the weapon or the target or both. I guarantee that every rural town and almost every rural household has 5-10x as many guns as people or more. What’s more is those are the most law abiding friendly Americans you can possibly meet, and the ones an invading military would have to contend with should war ever come to our soil. Hence the legend about “a gun behind every blade of grass”.

We absolutely can go to Walmart and buy a firearm but wherever you go they are supposed to do a background check and make sure you’re legal to buy one. But you can buy them almost anywhere. Also some places can make you wait for maybe 7 days or so before you can buy a gun from them and I believe that’s just for public safety reasons so if someone gets really mad at someone else they don’t want them to be able to buy a gun immediately and hurt that person but I’m honestly not exactly sure how that works because I’ve always just been able to buy it and take it home
