Cuban Emotional Journey to Washington DC
Witnessing Yoel and Mari, coming from communist Cuba, embark on this special trip to Washington DC is truly touching. Following their exploration of the city, their meetings with Congress members Maria Elvira Salazar and Mario Diaz-Balart, the Capitol tour, and visits to monuments and Arlington National Cemetery, makes us reflect on the value of freedom. @3:10 "But that's because it's America's fault, right?" Maybe, yes. At the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898, Cuba became a Protectorate of the US. Which meant it wasn't fully sovereign, the US Congress had the authority to (among other things) amend its Constitution. Which effectively means "full control of all legal aparatus". Cuba was given full independence in 1936. So here's where the Communist Revolution in Cuba may be American's fault- if we had not released Cuba as an independent nation, would the revolution have occurred? Did we release Cuba too soon, before it was ready? We held onto the Philippines for ten years more than we did Cuba, and they're doing much better overall. re: meeting Congresswoman Maria Salazar "She is an important person?" She's a member of the House of Representatives, of which there are 435 members. Each territory has one Representative, the number per State varies based upon the State's population. Florida currently has 28 Representatives, and she is one of them.

Hi... just so that you know, in the United States we have a Washington State (where I live), then we have Washington DC, which is actually a district or territory surround by a couple of states. So not to confuse Washington state with Washington DC, Americans usually call Washington DC just.. " DC "

Andre', just so you know. The U.S. is NOT a democracy, as much as the Democrats call it that. We are a Republic. Anyone that questions that should read, The U.S. Constitution, Article IV, section 4. The Congresswoman they met with first, Maria Elvira Salazar, was born in Miami, Florida. She is the daughter of Cuban parents who had come to America. So there is a strong connection to Cuba for her. The Congressman, Mario Díaz-Balart, whom they met with and were taken around to see a few different things, was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was also a child of Cuban parents. In America, something that isn't that well known, is that you can be born in a foreign country, like Cuba or Portugal, immigrate to the US and become a US Citizen, and then become a leader in the government. The President must be born as a citizen, but members of the House of Representatives (Congress and Senate) can have originally been born in a foreign country. You yourself could work towards citizenship in the US, then compete in an election to become a Congressman or Senator. You could be elected and help lead America. Right now, there are members of Congress who were born in India, Canada, Japan, Thailand, and Pakistan. There are Senators who were born in Trieste, Germany, Mexico, India, Japan, Ireland, Dominican Republic, South Korea, Peru, Cuba, Taiwan, Somalia, Soviet Union (Russia), and Guatemala. The Governor of the State of Nevada (Las Vegas) was born in Japan. Some of those were citizens by birth, meaning they were born in another country but at least one parent was already a US citizen. Others had no ties to America originally, immigrated, became naturalized citizens, and then went on to hold some of the highest political offices in the country. In the US, you can be from another country, become a citizen of the US, and end up helping to govern and lead the country. You could serve in Washington DC or be in charge of an entire state as a Governor. In some countries, like they said in this video, you can't even sit and talk with one of your leaders. In the US, you can become one of those leaders.

Just to clarify, the US Congress is made up of two parts - The House of Representatives & The Senate. The House is similar to Britain's House of Commons and its numbers are based on each State's population. The Senate is more elite, like Britain's House of Lords, and every State has 2 Senators, for a total of 100. Both Houses are elected by popular vote in each state. The US government consists of 3 branches: The Executive branch which is headed by the President; the Congress; and the Supreme Court. Each branch has ways to rein in the other two. We call this a "system of checks and balances" designed to keep power shared effectively among the three branches.

Maria Salazar is the daughter of Cuban exiles who left during the 1959 Cuban revolution. They all landed in Miami. She was a journalist for a Miami television station but went into politics.

I love watching Yoel’s journey in America! It makes me so proud to be American when I see someone like him come here and be emotionally overwhelmed by just how free and privileged we are and most Americans take it for granted and don’t appreciate it. I appreciate it and the men and women who serve to protect our freedoms. Watch his first times at grocery stores. They will make you cry!

Fun fact! If ur visiting DC do not pass up on the Museums!! Everything the Smithsonian owns is Free to the public for entry including the Zoo! 🦁 and the Botanical Garden 🌸 U will have to purchase any food while inside but ur allowed to come and go as u please. All the monuments, capital building, White house, and all the museums are with in walking distance of each other and the zoo is one short subway ride away.

Lincoln better represented us than any other President. He cared about our country to the point he suffered from what now we would call severe depression. Even when he did right he questioned himself, wanted to know if it was for the betterment of our country

I'm a DC native. Because it is the nation's capital, many of the attractions are free - great museums, art galleries, government buildings, etc., if you can get there and pay for a hotel & food, most things you will do will not cost anything. It can get very hot and humid in the summer, but the spring and fall are a great time to come. It also has a fantastic food scene. I've been gone for awhile, so I can't talk about entertainment and bars, but it certainly has theater. There is a tourist trolley thing that takes you around to a lot of attractions. You pay one price and can get on and off where you want. It's a good choice in the summer.

Best suggestion! We took the bus, once all around. Then, we made stops at all different places. When we finished at one place, the next bus could be there within 10 mins. Money well spent!

I've had the honor of visiting DC multiple times. To see the headstones of the brave men and women who fought for our freedoms, is a privilege! My memories of DC aren't so great at times. My aunt was inside the Pentagon when the plane hit on September 1, 2001. God Bless America!

I’m a lifelong Washingtonian. It’s nice to see someone care so much about the city and monuments. As children, we played on the steps of the Lincoln memorial and would go sledding down the hill at the capitol in winter. We walk around these things every day and barely notice. It’s nice to see them appreciated.

I'm a local, and you should definitely visit DC! Beyond being a very historical city, it has tons of amazing (and free) museums, great food, etc. If you fly into New York, it's just a 1 1/2 hour flight to DC or a 4 hour train ride. DC has flights all over the country if you want to go somewhere else afterwards and even better, it has subways so no need to rent a car!

Thank you for reacting to this. I am a U.S. citizen who went to Cuba last October. I literally fell in love with the Cuban people. There are remarkable humans living under very difficult circumstances, and they do it with a smile and so much love. I actually feel like I left a piece of my heart in Cuba. Most Americans don't realize just how complicated and difficult things can be. I know that I don't fully understand, but I understand enough that I feel helpless. I now have friends there, and I want their burdens to be lifted.

We do have people like Michael Moore telling us how Cubans have state of the art healthcare for free when in fact the hospitals the average Cuban has available to them you wouldn't take a hamster to. The party members and higher ups get the good care. Like it always goes in a communist country.

@@FRAME5RS I don't know of a single communist/socialist country with "state-of-the-art healthcare." I don't believe they have state-of-the-art anything. I remember when I was in Belgrade and had to go to the ER in an ambulance...LOL I thought I was going to die every time we hit a bump. This was one of those old jobbies from who knows when, and it had no shocks. I had broken bones and I felt every bump. Got to the hospital and it was like stepping back in time. It was awful. It was sparse and very outdated. I went to see the guy who was going to set my bones and he was one scary dude...LOL He looked like a mad scientist and he had this HUGE need on a syringe and was going around filling it from various bottles. I remember looking at that needle and thinking, "Oh hunny...there ain't no way you're going to stick that in me." He must have been reading my face because he came over and put a hose over the needle and showed me the end of the hose. He said, "See baby needle." LOL I relaxed a bit then. All was good until I woke up and had to stay the night. I was in a ward full of kids who were crying. I couldn't sleep and the little kid in front of my bed was standing in the bed rocking back and forth and he fell out. He started screaming. The nurses flew in, literally grabbed him off the floor, brought in this crib with a top that closed and locked, put the screaming kid in the crib, closed the top, and left. I was never so happy in my life to see daylight and leave that place. When I went back to have my cast removed, I'll never forget this as long as I live, I was in the waiting room and this lady rushed in with a tiny baby in her arms and a paper bag. They rushed her into a room and about 15 minutes later, she came out with the baby and left. I asked the nurse if everything was okay and was told she delivered her baby in the field while working and brought the baby and placenta to be checked out. She was fine, the baby was fine, and she was taking the baby and going back to work. I was floored.

Those ambulances you describe sound like that Ghostbuster crap from the 60s where their only function was to toss your carcass in and transport you to the hospital, if you made it, you were lucky. I follow RU-vidr who had to go to a Polish Hospital. They parked and looked up at some weird distorted building and he announced....Okay, this looks straight out of a nightmare.

D.C. is a great city to visit. Especially if you're interested in history. Between all the monuments and museums, it's THE history stop. My personal favorite is the National Aerospace Museum. I love planes and rockets. 🚀 xD

THIS is why Immigrants are SO SO important to the US. We 2nd, 3rd, etc generation FORGET what we have. It takes one that never had the benefits of a govt that is run BY the people. In saying this, we unfort can not take every person that wants to come or our country would collapse, just as any country would. This is why I get so upset at the extreme Left and Right. They both forget that this entire system is supposed to be for the "little" people. Not the top half of 1%. So, thank you to all those, immigrants, born here, whatever, that just want to make this country a better version in the end.

My mother’s parents came to the USA from the Tyrol in northern Italy, close to the Austrian border. My dad’s grandparents came here from County Donegal, Ireland. Many citizens are first or second generation Americans. 🇺🇸♥️🇺🇸

I was a Capitol Hill reporter. So I have been there a lot. They are beautiful buildings, and good or bad, those politicians are accessible to the public in ways I have not really seen elsewhere.

I was born in Washington and grew up in its suburbs. Have seen all these buildings and before 9/11 it was much more easy to do so. "Regular people" could pretty much wander in whenever they want. Now there's a "visitor's center" and some control but not too much. Back when I was in high school I could, as a high school student, research my term papers in the Library of Congress. And in summer a friend and I used to go nearly every week to the weekly concerts by the Air Force Orchestra on the banks of the Potomac River. I will add that I was a college freshman in 1963 and had my first summer job as an intern with the Navy Dept and got to meet John Kennedy just months before he was killed. Then I attended the funeral procession. In case you don't know, the final shots in Arlington National Cemetery have some history. The cemetery was established after the Civil War on what was the plantation of the family of Robert E. Lee, the commanding general of the Southern forces. It always amazed me that the Lees home overlooked the northern capital, almost as a metaphor for how closely the two sides were bound.

I'm a native of the DMV (that's the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia), and I can say that DC is absolutely worth your time. It sadly gets overshadowed by New York, which is only 3 hours away by train, but there is so much to see and do here. The memorials on the National Mall, Arlington National Cemetary, the Smithsonian Museums, and the White House, Capitol, and Library of Congress. A lot of the beauty of these monuments and federal buildings isn't adequately captured on film, and the Capitol in particular is stunning to see in person. Because of the Metro, DC is also one of the easiest cities to get around in in the country, and the food is varied and spectacular. And there is so much to do that may be a bit further afield, like George Washington's home at Mount Vernon, Virginia's slower paced capital of Richmond, the colonial capital at Williamsburg, the charm of Maryland's capital Annapolis, Baltimore, which despite its reputation is absolutely worth a visit, and the beauty of the mountains at Harpers' Ferry and Shenandoah. DC is fine to visit for a few days, and you'll have a great time, but you'll feel like you've barely scratched the surface.

That statue of George Washington is the most lifelike in existence. Hudon used a face mask and measured him. The original in the the Virginia Capitol Bulding. When making the mask Martha (his wife) would walk in see him and laugh causing George to laugh which in turn cracked a few drying masks on his face.

Thank you for featuring these two great Americans. I follow them as well. Please remember there are always forces trying to change our government. John Adams (one our founders) said, “there has never been a democracy that did not commit suicide.” Please try not to call us a democracy. That’s what evil forces want us to be. We are a representative republic. (Big difference) our pledge of allegiance to the flag does not say “and to the democracy for which it stands.” Rather, “and to the Republic for which it stands.” Thank you for the love you show for the USA because even with her problems, she is still a wonderful country. I live just above Richmond, VA which is about an hour and a half away from DC. The first time I visited DC was when I was a kid in Boyscouts. I'm 46 years old now and I have since visited DC at least 10 times.. With all the museums and monuments it is a beautiful place. As mentioned before Summer visit here can be very hot and humid. Imo best time to visit is mid-Spring.(mid March to mid April) If you time it right you can be there when the Cherry trees gifted to us from Japan in commemoration of WWII bloom.

I lived in Washington for 7 years. I think it is often overlooked as a great vacation spot. Almost all the museums, monuments, government buildings are all free to go to (the White House is difficult to get into and you have to arrange that months in advance). Another great thing is no need for a car, it has incredible public transportation. I think most Americans get very teary eyed especially the first time they see a lot of things there. Just an awesome city to go to.

The US congress consists of 2 houses: the Senate and the House of Representatives. There are 100 total members of Senate (2 senators from each state). and 435 members of the House of Representatives (the number of representatives per state depends on data from the census that's done once a decade). Congresswoman Salazar is one of Florida's 28 representatives.

I went to Washington DC when I was 9 on a family trip. It was a memory that has never left me. The history is spectacular. I wouldn't go to visit it at this point in time, but I wish I could possibly go there again and take my own son. As an American, it's an important experience. I want to tell you how much I appreciate their channel and yours. I feel like on a daily basis, my patriotism has almost gotten swallowed up by all the negativity about politics in this country. I need these videos tbh for my own good to remind me of what I have.

I’m 76 and in high school we all read the book “ The Day Lincoln was Shot.” In college I studied every single President and who ran against them: the entire History of America and we memorized Constitution and very famous speeches, all the Wars, how our government is constructed ( the checks and balances, etc). I never tire of continually learning about History. And God bless my brave ancestors for coming here under a lot of sacrifice.💕

I’ve traveled the world but no other place speaks to my core, my beliefs and my way of life like D.C. Everyone has a connection to politics. It’s like seeing an aspiring actor in Hollywood. YES! Watch Lincoln. You’ll be surprised to see and understand how his humility helped him through it all until the end.

I went to Washington, DC when I graduated from high school and before I started college. I majored in History and saw every historical site including Mount Vernon, the entire Smithsonian MuseumI spent 2 weeks seeing everything:, Arlington National Cemetery and Williamsburg, VA. There’s so much History. Another trip I went to the Civil War battlefields. There are countless places to see. I am so happy for them. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were our greatest Presidents. I grew up in Michigan and there is a huge Henry Ford Museum which has the chair Lincoln was shot in. American is loaded with history!

Watching this video gave me goosebumps! I was so happy for both Yoel and Mari. I am on the other political side from the congressmen and Congresswoman and all the politicians who were so welcoming to this couple but it warmed my heart tremendously. When Yoel looked up at the Capital Dome and the shot of them looking all the way down the "Mall" to the Washington Monument, it made my patriotic wings fly!!!

Andre, Americans think of the Capitol and White House as "The People's House" (though not nearly as accessible in recent decades). The ultimate protest is in Washington. See MLK Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial and the millions that were there to watch/protest with him.

Andre, thank you so much for sharing Yoel & Mari's videos! I wish everyone would check out their channel and learn the truth of what is happening in Cuba. I've seen this video 3 times and still cry with Mari. My prayer is for all Cubans to be able to experience the freedoms we take for granted in America, in their own country. Andre, it was only through your channel that I learned of Yoel & Mari's channel, and they're now some of my favorite content creators. I hope that any American tourists who were there saw and appreciated Yoel's beautiful reaction and his gratitude for what he was seeing - we can so easily take for granted the abundance and the freedom that we have. And I often have similar "allergy attacks" when watching their videos. ;-)

Arlington National Cemetery is a sacred place. It's not just for all military veterans, it's reserved primarily for service members who died in active duty, or someone with a decorated career in the military.

Andre, I grew up in South Florida and knew many Cubans and they are all very proud to be Americans now. Very hard working people. Also. Washington, DC. My dad took us there when we were children. He grew up there. His father was actually part of white house secret police for a while.He said when he and his brother were little he would be allowed to go to work with him and they ran through the tunnels under the white house. He said its huge under there.

I live in Washington DC and it’s so nice to see videos like this, which makes me really proud of my town! It’s an incredibly beautiful place to live and it’s the most culturally diverse place on earth with so many representatives from all over the world, from every part of the world. It feels like traveling the globe without ever leaving home to live here!

NYC to Washington, D.C. is about 3.5 - 4 hours trip by train or by car.

If you make it to DC, you should look into the Capitol building, White House, and National Archives (Constitution and Declaration of Independence). I don’t know how hard it is for a non-citizen to do the background checks and get approved for the tours and access, but my family was fortunate enough to do a tour of the Capitol building and National Archives and it was amazing! At the very least, spend enough time to get around the entire National Mall. It’s a big park area that connects all of the monuments and government buildings, as well as the free national museums. I highly recommend the national museums!

DC is a about a 4 hour train ride from NYC. I grew up around DC and have been to most of these places. On a field trip as a kid, we were invited by our congresswoman and she took us into the capitol and we went into the house chamber.

In the U.S. you can protest anywhere peacefully. You can not block the streets or sidewalks so that people can not pass you or drive by safely. Other than that, there is no laws against protesting.
