My Dad said when he was coming home on a ship at the end of WWII, all the soldiers were crying with emotion to see the Statue of Liberty.

It's Clint Eastwood. I think the Liberty Bell needs to be on the list.

Changing the number of stars on the flag doesn't matter. There have always been stars added. I have seen two added for Alaska and Hawaii.

I would have put the Liberty Bell on the list and taken off the Hollywood sign.

They got the definition of a cowboy wrong. Cowboys are people who tend cattle. What they were describing sounded more like Mountain Men, drifters, or maybe even homesteaders.

Mt Rushmore gets over 2,000,000 visitors a year. It was one of my most favorite vacations. It included several other stops like the Crazy Horse Monument and very nice museum, Wall Drug Store (kind of a Buckees type place), Custer State Park, antique train ride at Keystone, Black Hills, Deadwood, and the Badlands. If you go that far, there's plenty to see.

The honorable mentions had more right to be on the list than the beginning of the list!

The Statue of Liberty has a twin statue in Paris, France, most people don't know this. In 1986 when they did restoration on the statue, they replaced the torch and the original torch is in the museum at the base of the statue. They debated on removing the tarnish and bringing back the beautiful copper color, but were afraid further exposure to the sea would cause the thin sheets of copper to decay faster and damage the statue. They floated the idea of gold plating her, but opted to only plate the torch due to cost.

André... there are laws about bald eagles. You can not even pick up or own a Bald Eagles feather from the ground. If you find a Bald Eagle's feather or a carcass or egg, you must contact a Wildlife official in the area. The ONLY way to be in possession of a bald Eagle's feather is to be a Native American, and it must be gifted by the tribe.

Clint Eastwood and John Wayne were two classic cowboy movie stars. This was a good one .

They changed the flag, number of stars everytime a new state was added. I remember the 48 star flag changing when Alaska became a state 7 rows of 7 stars. Then 2 years later, all new flags with 50 stars when Hawaii became the latest state. There is no discussion about this, it is tradition and is just done!!!

14:35 on a sidenote, we raised turkeys on our farm, and they are a very unique animal. The local Indian tribes took a lot of their lifestyle from the cues of the turkey. Some native dances resemble the strutting and aggressive movements of Toms. George Washington and other founding fathers actually bred turkeys. Turkey toms are protective, showy, and very smart. They’re territorial and they will definitely suss out the bad guys from the good guys.

Perhaps Crazy Horse Monument should be included, though the last I saw it, it was still not finished, but isn't real far from Mount Rushmore. Also things like Niagara Falls and other great sites in are many national parks. A list of top 50 or even 100 symbols could be made easily.

While I think all these are deserving, I would not include: - the Hollywood sign, it was just advertising - probably not the cowboy unless it included all the many Africans and Native Americans who were cowboys. I would include the 1- the grand canyon due to natural beauty. 2 - the Niagara falls due to beauty. 3- the golden gate bridge 4- the Gateway Arch in St. Louis for its representation of the move to settle the west 5- Mount Rushmore 6 - the sites in DC: - the Lincoln Memorial - the White House - the Capitol building - the Smithsonian - the Pentagon 7- the sights in NYC - the World Trade Center monument - Statue of Libeety - Ellis Island 8 - Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg 9 - Any flag, but the one that flew over Ft. McHenry would be best. 10- Uncle Sam as a symbol of our willingness to give our life for our country. If and when we add another state, another star must be added to the flag. That is the way it works.

The military has a department of heraldry, and they have a design for a 51-star flag ready to go just in case we get another state. Also, the thirteen stars on the US seal represent a "new constellation" that appeared in "the firmament of the nations" in 1776, so it makes sense to continue to have the stars represent states on the flag. So, for complete consistency the current US seal would also need to have 50 stars - the "constellation" has significantly grown (this is also the significance of the name "USS Constellation").

The Golden Gate Bridge is constantly being painted. Then they end at one side, they start back up on the other side.

I would have been really disappointed in mojo if they did not include Team America flying out of Mt. Rushmore. I'm glad they added it at the end.

I've never heard of anyone being opposed to adding new States simply because it would change the stars on the flag.

The ONLY movie "The Alamo" was with John Wayne. The story behind the movie is awesome too. But if you watch any, please watch John Wayne's movie first.

I do not think that many Americans balk at changing the flag for new states. The reason Washington DC and Puerto Rico don't have Statehood is a little more complex. Both of them tend to lean more towards the Democratic Party over the Republican Party, and would very much upset the balance of power in the Senate. There is more to this than just what I have said, but I wanted to keep this short.

There's been 27 versions of the flag. It'll change if another state happens.

lol, yes, we also like "ca-boys"! The real thing (cowboys) still exist! Yes, they still exist because their talents are still needed. We still have rodeos as a way to respect what it took (and sometimes takes) to raise cattle and to 'settle' the American wild west.

In Arizona, we saw a large bald eagle resting in the corner of our backyard. It was resting on the blocked concrete fence, within the shaded tree area. This eagle was the most beautiful animal I ever saw. Majestic. You could see its confidence and superiority. It also appeared very peaceful and content in our presence, not startled by our presence. What a great experience in seeing this exquisite bird.

IN MY VIEW Alaska and Hawaii have now become (U.S.) States. Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Island are called (U.S.) Territories.

The New York Yankees have a history that just screams cinema from fairytale endings to tragic Shakespearean downfalls. They’ve also won the World Series 27 times and the next best team sits at 11. I am a Yankees fan from Illinois and last year me and my friends drove 14 hours straight to New York City to stay for 2 days and see the Yankees play at Yankee Stadium. It’s a surreal atmosphere unlike any other in American sports. And by far the best stadium food!

The New York Yankees - Joe Dimagio, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Casey Stengel, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle are just some of the famous players, plus the team even had a Broadway play & then movie named after them “Damn Yankees”. Big deal in baseball history

There is a movie The Alamo (1960) starring John Wayne as the fort defenders made a last stand as the Mexicans attacked.

Another old person here - when I was growing up, there were only 48 states with the corresponding number of stars on the flag. Then Alaska and Hawaii became states about 6 months apart in 1959, and their stars were added to the flag. The change was interesting but no big deal.

If you like western novels, try an author named Louis L'Amour. He wrote both short stories and novels. Quite a few of his stories have been turned into film. He has been published in Spanish, but not Portuguese

Bit of trivia about the Statue of Liberty. In the early days of designing a statue, the statue was originally supposed to be built along the Suez Canal when the Canal was completed. The Egyptians thought it was too expensive since they were already spending so much money into the canal so instead built the Port Said Lighthouse on the proposed spot of the statue. The idea was eventually redesigned to express the idea of American liberty. You can go into the crown of the Statue of Liberty but over a hundred years ago you used to be able to go into the torch as well. It was closed after German Saboteurs blew up a nearby railyard in what is today Liberty State Park called the Black Tom explosion in 1916. It created a large enough explosion that it could be heard all the way in Philadelphia and Baltimore. The explosion created shrapnel that damaged the statue. This was before America had joined WW1 and was still neutral but the saboteurs were trying to attack war supply shipments that the U.S. was sending to the Allied powers in Europe.

The mountain used for Mt Rushmore was actually a sacred place for some Native Americans. The Lakota Sioux peoples were given the Black Hills by the govt in 1868; That is until gold was found there in 1870 and the govt kicked them out; Then for the same govt blasting 4 leaders of said govt l.on a sacred site...Jeeze.

I recall a bit of a song I sang as a child in school. The song contained things that are American symbols. Apple pie (yes I know it's UK origins but please bear with me), swan, baseball, TV, and Superman. But us who are citizens are THE American symbol. I have nothing but absolute confidence as an American citizen.

There should have been on this list one of the majestic symbols of Native Americans. Leaders such as Red Cloud, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull were powerful forces in shaping our culture…as you may recall with half the states bearing Native American words and names.

Oh no, the farting scene from Blazing Saddles is almost a cult favorite. The whole movie is very entertaining and funny.

Sam Wilson was likely the originator of Uncle Sam. His friends called him that. He had contracts to supply the military with beef during the war of 1812. All his goods were stamped U.S. Since it's the U.S. as the United States. That name just became synonymous with the government. Nothing is more satisfying than the Boston Red Sox or the Baltimore Orioles kicking the New York Yankees a** during baseball season. NY is one of those historical teams, started in the 1800s. So, they've had more opportunities to win the World Series. Watch "The Alamo".

I can't think of anyone who would be upset about adding more stars to represent a new state. Nope. We Americans are glad to accept and acknowledge our fellow americans, and all states deserve their star. Mho

Earlier this year a veterinarian that hunts on our land, he brought up a few deer that was hit by cars…we have a camera that could see what came to feed on the road kill…we had ravens, crows and 2 bald eagles came to get some meat…

If you go by how the movies have represented America to the world, this is probably a good list. If you want a list that represents the history, I would go a different route.

The guy on a horse with the Statue Of Liberty is Charleston Heston from the original first movie The Planet Of The Apes. A very, very good film. Highly suggested. 1968. 17:20 mark.

US have a few territories as you mentioned (Puerto Rico, ect). All have the right to vote themselves in as another state. There are certain criteria they have to meet in order to do so but if they vote in favor then the flag will change as it has many times over the last couple centuries. It's also nice that they are territories because we don't have to have a passport to go.

There was a time when the Twin Towers would've been considered for this list. I think you're right about the flag. Although there are people who already think there are 51 states, it's questionable. 51 states would just change the alignment of stars! Don't know if such a video exists, but it might interest you to see the different US flags over the decades, especially as new States are added.

Presidents on Mount Rushmore - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abe Lincoln were all Land Surveyors in their early lives. I am a Land Surveyor by trade. We affectionally like to call this majestic monument (3 Surveyors and some other guy!)

11:45 Yes, Uncle Sam was a real person. His actual name was Samuel Wilson. He was a meatpacker/meat inspector who lived in Troy, New York. During the War of 1812, Samuel Wilson's meatpacking business was a subcontractor which supplied the U.S. Army troops with meat rations during the war. The name of the parent company was Elbert Anderson. The barrels of meat which came from the Elbert Anderson company were stamped with: "E.A. - U.S." (Elbert Anderson, United States.) As time went on, the workers in the plant began saying, "Hey, this meat is for 'Uncle Sam'!", because of the "U.S." stamp on the barrels. And that's how Samuel Wilson got the nickname "Uncle Sam", and in later years became a treasured symbol of the United States of America!

My Uncle was a Cowboy in the 1940s and 1950s. He was one of the last of the Cowboys that went on the big Roundups that is synonymous with the West. He trained Wild Horses.

The reason the NY Yankees was on the list is because the term "Yankee" was how the British referred to people from the colonies. It later made a comeback during the Civil War referring to people from the north or the Union Army. My home state of Connecticut has an official State Song called "Yankee Doodle". It was written to mock us colonists. We made it our marching song.

As a Boston Red Sox fan I deny the fact that the Yankees are an American symbol.

We have bald eagles that nest around our lake cabin. More than once an eagle has flown right next to our boat, matching our speed. INCREDIBLE!

Speaking strictly for myself I would be honored to add another star to our flag. It's a time honored tradition. That's how we went from the original 13 to the fifty of today. Change is progress, and change for a good reason like growth is positive. So I would welcome the assimilation of a new state. To add it's distinctiveness to our own.

Fun fact: The same guy who did Mt. Rushmore also did Stone Mountain in Stone Mountain, GA.

Well the kid who made the 50 star flag was a high school kid so if we get another state that might be pretty cool to see what another kid comes up with. Forgot to mention Merica F@$k yeah.

Its more about the balance of power in Congress than the design of the stars. DC & Puerto Rico are thought to be more likely to trend Democratic than Republican. Its a bit like Over Simplified's bit on adding states before the Civil War.

I grew up in Marin County. Crossed that bridge all the time. I love it! The photos taken where you see the bridge and San Francisco in the distance are taken from the Marin Headlands. We used to go there all the time as there are old military bunkers and beaches all over the headlands as well as the beautiful sight of the Golden Gate.

Benjamin Franklin did not want the eagle as the countries bird. Since Benjamin Franklin's suggested design for the seal didn't contain any birds, it is believed that he did not lobby for the Wild Turkey to be the national bird. In fact, the only written mention of his disdain for the Bald Eagle wasn't until 1784 when he wrote a letter to his daughter where he questions the decision. In the letter he makes it clear that he did not believe the Bald Eagle to be representative of the new nation and he remarks that the bird on the seal looks more like a turkey. The letter reads:

Great review!! Regard the Alamo, there are 3 or 4 movies about the battle. The scene shown in this is the latest and was a very good as well as accurate account of the battle. This one was from Disney productions, if I remember correctly and I believe it was directed by Ron Howard. It came out in 96 I believe. I would encourage you to watch it, if you feel inclined it would be great to see your review of the movie. It did bomb at the box office, just like the John Wayne version of the the battle from the 1960s. Iconic battle but no body seems to go to the movies to see the movie.

I took a school theater trip to NY and let me tell you those stairs to get to the crown in the Statue of Liberty are no joke! Top 3 most perilous feeling in my life and I was only 14. It is a spiral staircase and the steps are the narrowest I can recall traversing. It was worth it though esp since they closed it shortly after. Not sure if they have reopened it since the renovations. The deck at the top of the Empire State Building is wild too! It is so much more open so you feel the height more than enclosed safely in Liberty’s crown. The wind is so strong and people told us urban legends about people trying to un-alive themselves by jumping but getting thrown to safety by said wind. I hope you get to make many visits with your family and see all the things!

The thing about the three top American sports - basketball, baseball, and football - is that their seasons overlap. And now the leagues and sports writers have learned to hype the stuff between seasons - draft, free agency, pre-season camps. So while people have a favorite sport, a sports fan is pretty aware of the other sports. This is also a reason why soccer has a hard time gaining traction in America.

You were not entirely wrong. Bartholdi made the design and the copper skin of the statue. And Eiffel made the steel framework that holds it together.

The city of St. Louis was the starting point for a lot of the settler's wagon trains going west. Which is why they built the arch. If you want to watch a great movie "PATTON" is well worth a watch.

Every time I watch the scene from Godfather II, when young Vito is pulling in to the harbor and sees the statue of Liberty with the rest of the passengers, it hits me. I mean, I know that's what the director wanted us to feel, he set it up that way. But I'd like everyone to take a moment and think about what that must have been like. And definitely read the poem written by Emily Lazarus that sits at the foot of the statue.

MANY Americans came through NY as immigrants. Before they moved on, they probably experienced baseball for the first time as an immigrants.

There is also a Statue of Liberty in Paris, not far from the Eiffel Tower.

I’m old enough to remember when the flag had 48 stars. Redesigning it for Alaska and Hawaii happened when I was in grade school. No big deal. It’s more about politics than the flag that many resist having DC and PR become states.
