For Girl Scout Cookies, you only have 4 months - January through April - to buy them. That makes the huge sales even more impressive. Only sold by girls and young ladies - no advertising - a Girl Scout neighbor usually comes to the door in January asking how many boxes of cookies and what flavors you want. Though rather expensive for a box ($4 - I think), you can't help but order about 5 boxes. Some Thin Mints to go in the fridge or freezer (mint cookies best served COLD), or Samoas (coconut, caramel, on a cookie drizzled with chocolate). The girl returns a few weeks later with your boxes and you pay her. Imagine each house in America buying at least one box each year. It totally funds the Girl Scouts. (BTW, Girl Scouts teach young girls basic skills - from camping/firestarting, to horseback riding, to computer code. Each item they master, they get a patch sewn onto their Girl Scout sash. My mother was a Girl Scout in the 1940s, and I was in the 1970s. It's a great after-school activity that teaches teamwork, important skills, and self-esteem).

I don’t have a garbage disposal, I compost my food scraps (the type that can be composted) The people I know that have a garbage disposal don’t use them very much because they get clogged a lot (they must be putting everything down the garbage disposal 🤷‍♀️) I never have shopped Black Fridays because I am a nurse and never had that day off plus I dislike crowds. I used to not like prescription drug commercials but now I think it is a good thing for the public to be aware of medications that they can discuss with their doctors and also be aware of all the side effects. Doctors are great but they are human, people tend to think their Dr knows everything and don’t question them. The ads help give us more control over our own health.

This was very unpopular with us baby boomers. There was a lot of turmoil and rioting at this time. So, the government caved in to pressure from the younger generation.

Girl Scout cookies are unique to them and made specifically for them as a fund raising event each year. They are only sold by the girls in the Scouts door to door or at temporary stands outside of stores. 10:09 a couple of things here... when the draft was enacted for the Vietnam War... the voting age was 21 and the drinking age was 18. but there was an uproar about the draft forcing 18 year old's to die in a war but they couldn't have a say in the political process that was sending them to that war... this was the same argument that got Men the Right to vote in the first place. it was only landowners up until that point (regardless of gender). so when the Draft was first made into law in the 1800s, they had to give Men the Right to vote in the political process that was sending them to wars... this was again used to lower the age to 18 for when the Draft was actually used in the 1970s... different to that was the drinking age... it was 18 throughout most of the history of the U.S.... that is until the organization called MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) protested and used studies that showed that young adults' largest cause of death was drunk driving (also they caused a large amount of deaths because of this). so they convinced Congress to pass a law raising the drinking age to 21, which they stated would significantly cut down on the amount of drunk driving deaths... and while it did reduce it somewhat, it wasn't nearly the amount they were promising, but government is slow to change, so it didn't matter after that.. I remember this well, because I was 18 at the time, so I was 'grandfathered' in and could still buy alcohol at the time legally (although I never really drank much anyways). those that were already 18, 19, or 20 at the time the law passed were allowed to continue buying legally... and while nowadays, you mainly see older people drunk driving, it still happens with teens as well, but usually the underaged ones are the most doing it, (15-17) so it has little impact there... I (and many others) feel that the main problem was that teens weren't taught how to be responsible at home when they drank (because most parents did allow them to drink at all anyways), so when they could sneak it or could legally start, they didn't know how to temper their behavior or to not drive in that condition, because they were never taught. thus they did dangerous behavior while drunk more often... side note: nearly every State allows children (under 21) to drink as long as they are with their parent or legal guardian at the time the do it... example In Texas, any child can drink (and get drunk) as long as their parent or designated adult (approved by the parents) is present. on private property (your home) or even in public or private business (like restaurants)... most people don't know this or do it, but it is allowed by law... I let my 14 year old have a glass of red wine one time out at a restaurant and the waitress about had a conniption and refused to server her. I had to call the manager and they didn't know either and I had to look up the law and show them... the waitress still refused, but the manager took care of it and changed our waitress... this was over a decade ago.

This narrator was wrong on a lot. Especially the cheese section. I don't know literally ANYONE who eats spray cheese EVER, except once in their life just to try it. Snd American cheese is NOT American, it was invented in Switzerland and popularized in Canada. It's called "American" because it's from North America, not the USA. Super sizing hasn't been around in at least a decade, typically you can choose medium or large and even small at some places. White bread isn't American, it's English. And it's far from the most popular in America. It's just sandwich bread, not the only bread we eat. MANY countries use imperial units, and we use BOTH metric and imperial in America. Most "American" food items... American cheese, white bread, etc. were invented during wartime or the depression. We needed bread and cheese (staple food items) to last longer and sold in bulk for cheap. Huge blocks of cheese were actually given away as commodities to the poor. That cheese didn't have to be refrigerated and could feed a large family. White bread was very cheap and didn't spoil as quickly as bakery bread. It fed a lot of starving people.

The house I grew up in, and every apartment and house I’ve lived in has a garbage disposal. Not all communities have a compost program, mine does. We have a large yard waste container for not only lawn clippings and garden waste, that’s where you dispose of almost all food scraps and other items like pizza boxes. They also give you a small covered container for your kitchen that you put a biodegradable liner in and you empty that into the big container outside. However most apartment and condo complexes may not have a yard waste container so then the garbage disposal is the best option. “Composting food waste creates fertilizer to be used in your garden, improves your soil and increases drought resistance. However, not everyone has a yard and some of us don’t have the time or inclination to manage our food scraps by composting. If this is the case, you might consider checking to see if your area has a local business that will provide you with a small compost container and pick it up on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly basis. If that is not convenient or is not an option, the best option for food waste is to put your food scraps down the sink into the disposal. Why? Food scraps placed in the garbage and carried to the landfill decompose and produce methane gas, a greenhouse gas which is far more potent that carbon dioxide. Landfills do have methods to capture these gasses but they are not nearly as efficient as the methods used by wastewater treatment plants. Food scraps that are processed through the disposal travel with the wastewater to the treatment plants where anaerobic digesters capture the methane gas produced during decomposition and convert it to electricity or biofuels.”

American cheese is a processed cheese. It is at least 51% real cheese with sodium citrate added so it can be pasteurized. They often add emulsifiers so it melts smoothly A good chunk of the remainder is usually milk fat and milk or cheese whey and such. It is not all chemicals. That also add salt and coloring and possibly a deacidify agent. It is not as horrible as people make it out to be. Most of these things like cheese spray is likely just based on American cheese but falls below the 51% real cheese. The main thing they are supposed to be used for is with a star slit tip you can add it to crackers to look fancy kind of like what they do with the star tips for frosting cakes. The taste is not bad. Some put it on sandwiches. Processed cheese because of the emulsifiers is great for making smooth melted cheese. If you have ever has queso then you have had it. We also use a LOT of real cheese too. I doubt American cheese comes close to the sales number of other cheese like Colby-jack, pepper0jack, cheddar, or mozzarella. I have maybe bought them 2-3 times in my life and I eat a lot of cheese. Yes I have a garbage disposal, but if you cram a bunch down it you are just going to plug up your plumbing. Like if I hard-boil a bunch of eggs and peal or peel a bunch of potatoes I and going to throw most of it in the garbage and only wash what is left down the garbage disposal. And it does not waste much water as you can turn it one when you are doing the dishes. You only need to run it for a few seconds. And most of the solids in the sewer is treated and used as fertilizer for cattle feed mostly. The liquids are treated with bacteria and for several hours then the bacteria is killed off by chlorine, O2, or UV lights before being released into a river usually. Soda is dirt cheap. Free refills cost maybe 10 cents on a drink you likely paid over $2.50 for. Limiting soda intake is not the government's business. It also limits diet soda too. They actually limit the size of drink in some states (or the used to. I think that was in New York. But if the heat is bad and you are trying to rehydrate before going back to work in the heat these policies are brutal and evil. And don't tell me diet is bad for you. It is 10x better than real sugar (or corn syrup, or any other sweetener). Sugar is just horrible in general and almost everybody eats way too much sugar... not just Americans. And carbs are not great and yes the body processes them into sugars but far slower so it is not as bad. Even fruits are not that healthy. The human diet should be meats and vegies with some carbs and fruits and very little sugar. Sugar is far worse than fat even. Super sizing is a thing, but not as big as it used to be. Black Friday is nothing like it used to be as most get their deals online. White bread is OK, but nothing special. I like Italian style bread or a heavy bread like Oatnut. Girl Scout cookies are OK, but kind of expensive. Voting should be 21. Metric system is VERY over rated and with the advent of computers it has become a mute point. You come to the US then learn the language, customs, and our measurements or don't come. Don't act like it makes us worse than everybody else because that does not seem to be true in any way. I don't know anybody that actually watches cable TV anymore so who cares about commercials on TV. You can not get these prescriptions without you DOCTOR prescribing it. You can ASK your doctor about it, but most understand this is a retail product so it will be EXPENSIVE. I get all generic drugs. Also MOST people are either on their parent's or spouse's insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, or their employer's insurance. Only a small portion have no insurance, 7.7%, and they are typically young adults or children that do not often need medical insurance. Some are just people that likely would be covered by Medicaid but will only apply if they need it as they will go back 3 months from the time you apply and they do not have to re-up every 6-12 months this way. The rest are mostly immigrants that are not eligible for Medicaid. The thing is they just go to the hospitals and don't pay... and there is nothing that most hospitals can do. Same with schools.

Waste disposal from the sink in suburbs isn't an issue for a couple of reasons, but it is not a garbage disposal unit. If you want your pipes to stay clear, toss bulk items into compost or trash because the disposal unit is for more like plate scrapings and crumbs. Water treatment hates fat and oils, but enzymes neet some of that stuff to treat the water effectively.

I mean, I hate the pharmaceutical commercials, but it's not like you can just go get them without a prescription from your doctor. You have to discuss your situation with your doctor and if they agree it's right for you, then they'll write you a prescription. If they don't think it's good for you, they will tell you that and find a safer alternative.

Anything put in a sink disposal is organic matter. Food scraps... no paper, metal, bones. It is NOT bad for the environment!! The waste water is sent to a waste water treatment plant , and the methane is captured for energy. Otherwise, all that food waste would be put into the landfill... which really isn't good for the environment. I have an older home, and I live on a ½ acre. Therefore, I don't have a sink disposal. My food waste is put into an area at the back of my property for composting. People in town or in apartments may not have that option.

I'm not against the medical care commercials. My dad had been taking a certain medication and wasn't feeling well. We saw a commercial advertising that drugs side effects. He went to the doctor, and because of that , he was taken off and switched to a medication that was better for him. So, I think it brings awareness to the drug a doctor may give.

People cannot be "fooled into buying" anything by drug commercials because the ones people find most objectionable are all for prescription drugs. You can't buy them without a prescription from a doctor. Many doctors (I am one) hate them because they result in people who've seen a commercial hounding the doctor for a particular drug they may not need or may not even be good for them. Sometimes, though, the response of a good doctor might be, "Yeah, OK, we could try that." People should, however, be aware that the advertised drugs are almost exclusively branded products that cost much more than similar generics and even if you have good insurance, your copayment for them might be much higher or they might not even be available with your insurance (right now the GLP-1 weight loss drugs that are advertised everywhere are an example of that).

7:04 black friday was getting stupid for awhile there... the first bad one was the year that 'tickle me elmo' came out.. there were actual fistfights over that stupid toy... then it started being fights over electronics in the following years... stores would only stock about a dozen of an item and advertise it in their 'black friday' sales ad to get people to show up, but when they QUICKLY sold out, people would get very upset and fights would happen, usually over the last couple that hadn't been sold yet... but once the pandemic happened, there were no more 'black fridays' so everyone turned to online shopping for those days and after the pandemic, those crazy scenes didn't happen anymore....

I was born in the early 1970s. When I was in school everyone was taught both systems. And because of it I can do many conversions in my head still to this day. Just one of the reasons I'm glad I grew up when I did - they actually taught useful things. I don't think they teach metric at all in school anymore. I don't have a garbage disposal and most people I know don't either. I've lived in multiple states and multiple areas within those states and only 2 places had garbage disposals and I never used them. I suspect that they are more popular in certain regions and types of houses than others - however maybe I just never happened to move those areas where they are common.

The drinking age is based on when you can drive, which is at 16-16.5. The reason for this is that the alcohol intake was causing immense car fatalities. Making the drinking age of 21 has helped with this problem significantly. No other country had a ratio of car to population, so this is a huge deal here. Just about everything is based on the car, and not walking or using public transportation. On the advertising of prescription meds, I do not know of anyone who complains about this. And what it does is that it makes it easier for the doctor when he suggests to use one of these advertised drugs. I do not think that the statistic given about advertising costs versus research of that drug is pretty much BS, at least for a certain time after the drug is released. Over a long period of time, the development cost remains the same, and does not increase, but advertising costs continue, so that statement is very misleading.

4:44 as far as the free refills and portion sizes....if you work out, you're burning those extra calories and won't gain weight. With the educated, knowledgeable and health conscious population of California, our obesity rate state wide is only 27%, which is lower than Australia. And if you look at specific areas, such as "Silicon Valley" where I live (Santa Clara County), it's much lower. It's 18% here in Silicon Valley, which is roughly the same as France. We don't need to make refills illegal, nor should "supersizing" be illegal, because individuals can work out to lose any extra calories. 🙂 Obesity is probably a good problem to have, because it means your people are prosperous and can afford a lot of food, but if people are working out, it shouldn't be too common. 🙂

I just saw today that a state governmental agency required a dairy to throw into the trash (while they watched) thousands of dollars of raw milk items (milk, cheese, butter) that hadn't been pasteurized. You are allowed to sell those products, but only as pet food, not for human consumption. But this state, in my opinion, overreached and cost a very small business to probably go out of business due to loss of product. It's weird what things are okay in the US, but not in the EU, and vice-versa.

My hubby wants to kill all the armadillos because they tear up our yard and they are not native to Georgia. Also at night I can sit outside and listen to four separate coyote packs around my house. They won't hurt you, but they do sound kinda scary. If they get to howling back and forth they can get loud. BTW, we found a tiny pink puppy in the woods. Thus puppy followed us and he was almost dead from mange. So I took him to the Vet and got him some medication. When I took him back to get his shots his solid black coat had grown in and the Vet informed me that we had a pure blooded Coyote. He was the best. He was quite and didn't smell. He stayed inside and he had a beautiful silver female Coyote showed up and they bred. He wouldn't go with her to live in the wild. He enjoyed our wood fireplace in the winter and our air conditioner in the summer. We laughed that he was a true deadbeat dad!

It's not as good as regular cheese. It's not put on hamburgers. Sliced cheese is used for them. I only drink no-sugar drinks White bread doesn't taste sweet. I only buy whole-wheat bread. Girl Scout cookies are fabulous-tasting. One of my daughters was a girl scout and they sell cookies once a year, door to door or outside Walmart, etc. I spent my time driving around delivering cookies with her. Americans prefer the imperial kind of math. You say you have to figure it out, well, we do too !! I buy something on Amazon and if it uses cm, etc. I too have to get on the computer to see how it compares with out math. I'm tired of people criticising America for using what we are use to. I could criticise you for me having to find out the equivalent. NO, pharmaceutical commercials don't make people buy them - you have to have a doctor decide what med you need and he gives you the prescription. Also doctors can check "may use a cheaper version of the drug. My doctor does that. At Walmart I get 30 pills for $4, or 3 months for $10. I've learned not to read the possible side effects of a drug or it will scare you to death. But if one person out of 100 have a strange side effect, they still have to include it in the drug's listing.

I'm in America in Massachusetts and I actually don't currently have a garbage disposal, but almost every other place that I've lived in has had one. It's not really a big deal to not have one but they can certainly be convenient. I feel like spray cheese is always showing up on lists like this but it's honestly not that popular in America. The most common reason that I see people talk about it is usually because someone is reacting to a video like this one! It's not the kind of thing that normally see I at peoples' homes, though I don't always look in cabinets. Girl Scout cookies are popular! I think they're usually only sold in March and April and you usually have to know a Girl Scout or know where they might set up a stand. I often see them outside Walmart in March and April selling cookies, but I also have a Girl Scout next-door that I can buy cookies from. There are roughly around five dollars a box and they have all different types. I think you would like them a lot! As for the drug commercials, they almost always require a prescription so people aren't really in danger of getting their hands on ones that they shouldn't be taking. They are usually intended to attract people to them so that they go talk to their doctor about them and convince their doctor to prescribe them. I pretty much don't pay attention to them unless I see an issue that I'm suffering from.

I have no problem with ads for prescription medications. A doctor has to prescribe them anyway so it's not like somebody is going to walk in and help themselves. The doctor has to say okay, but the company needs to let us know the product exists in order to stay in business. We also realize that it's a company trying to hack their product to the public. And so, as with any such advertised product, we weigh the benefits to see whether or not it's something we want for us.

Ok, I'm curious, what do most countries outside the US do with their garbage and what happens to it. We compost many things, but some things can't or shouldn't be composed. We have a garbage disposal that I have never heavily used. Not everything can or should be put down it and water is used to flush it out to the cities treatment plant. Our city processes all of the waste water from the town, separating/filtering/aerating and discharging the water and waste separately. It isn't cheap. We pay for the city water plus an equal amount for our sewer service. Most of the advertised pharmaceuticals have to have a prescription to purchase them. Things like aspirin, acetaminophen, antacids, decongestants, antihistamines, and laxatives for the most part are available without a prescription.
