2 things I would add or change. It's iconic on a hot day to have a root beer float. Get a scoop of vanilla ice cream and pour root beer over it. It is an acquired taste because almost every European that I've seen try it, hate it. Second thing is that having a s'more around a campfire at night is another iconic summertime food.

3:15 laurence's "poor man's" here doesn't mean "lower quality/worse", but rather "made with alternative ingredients". As in "poor man's hotdog" - "we improvised with what we had - not quite traditional, but it'll work!" Kind of like substitutions in a recipe (flour if you don't have corn starch, etc.)
@hopcat500
@hopcat500 23 дня назад
Not corn starch, it is CORN MEAL, (finely ground corn)
@TexasRose50

Wrong! Corn starch is a thickening agent. You don’t use corn meal to thicken anything! Apparently you aren’t a cook. That figures.
@emilyb5307
@emilyb5307 23 дня назад
Guys... I was giving an entirely separate example. "Substitutions in a recipe" -in general, for instance "corn starch" is a thickening agent that can be switched for flour in a pinch. Corn meal is what corn dogs are made of, yes Hopcat. You're both correct in different ways? And both seem to be addressing entirely different sections of the comment I left.
@user-sp6jk3zz5b
@user-sp6jk3zz5b 11 дней назад
I'm American and " poor man's" anything refers to cheap version . It's not a cheap hotdog . I wouldn't even say it's in the hotdog realm. His New Jersey origin story is false because corn meal is a Southern thing and people in the Northeast at that time likely didn't even know what cornbread was. Texas State Fair is the origin of corn dogs

I was going to make a comment about that. I've probably eaten more than 100 chili dogs in my lifetime and it never crossed my mind to think of it as Mexican or Tex-Mex. I just think of it as generic American food though the chili portion of the chili dog does go back to cowboy culture, so I can see where he might try to lump it in as Tex-Mex. I also thought it was funny when he commented that the pork tenderloin pictured might be the Texas version because of its size. I would be surprised if you even found that item on the menu of any restaurant in Texas. I live in Oklahoma and had never heard of that type of sandwich until researching a trip through Indiana and other states in that region as I like to look for good local places to eat and regional foods that I haven't tried. I put a restaurant that was recommended for that dish on my itinerary and tried it while passing through. It was good.

My favorite birthday dinner (as it's in July), and it's very summery: BBQ ribs, sauteed or broiled asparagus (or simmered all day greens), slaw, baked beans (or mashed potatoes or baked potatoes), warm cornbread with lots of butter, sliced cucumbers and onion in vinegar.

It's butter pecan, like the nut because that's what it is. Also, a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a glass of cold root beer (a flavor of carbonated soft drink) is called a root beer float. The pecan tree is native to the southern half of the US. Native Americans gave us the word pecan but they didn't tell us how to say it. The root beer float is essential summer fare. A tall glass, one or two scoops of vanilla ice cream in the glass, pour in the root beer. In New Mexico we make our chili dogs with our hot red chile sauce, cooked with ground beef, and lots of cheese. We also put this on fries. Navajo Tacos are also summer fair food.

I can't remember at what point I subscribed but it was when you had much less subscribers. it is a credit to you for how likable and entertaining you are. It literally has become my favorite channel and I subscribe to ALOT. Pretty soon you will be able to quit your job (whatever that is) and live exclusively off your income from this channel and be able to travel to the US regularly. Hey you could even become a digital nomad and base yourself in the US, even part time! I also wanted to comment about the background in your videos. You had asked what we thought. I love it! I love the paint color and the quirky and eclectic posters and figurines you have. It is quite unique.

Andre, a couple days ago it was 33 centigrade here. Today it's cooler, 24.4. 🙂 In "Silicon Valley" part of "San Francisco Bay Area". Later this week, 31.6 centigrade is predicted. 🙂 The city of San Francisco is a little cooler than down here in Silicon Valley; it is directly exposed to the cold air from the pacific. But here in SV, there is a mountain range that blocks the seabreeze from the Pacific, so we only get the seabreeze at night, when it comes in from San Francisco Bay. 🙂 During the day we very much need AC! I am running it right now (it is 1630 hours). But we're 80% solar power here in California right now, so it is causing very little pollution. Guilt-free AC 🙂

The name comes from the nut itself, that used to be buttered, roasted, and slightly salted before being added to vanilla ice cream. A fine-tuned process of ice cream mfg. At one time Breyer's had the best butter pecan ice cream going...not anymore though, in the same way they don't seem to put as much emphasis on preparing(buttering - roasting) the nuts as they used to, so most BP doesn't taste the same as it used to.

At our neighborhood bbq place they have an amazing dish called a Junkyard Dog. Start with an Oversized hot dog bun, then an oversized all beef hotdog, add bbq chicken or pork, bbq sauce, next bbq baked beans, and everything topped with Cole slaw. You can’t pick this thing up, you have to eat it with a fork and knife. Heavenly deliciousness. It will feed two happy people. 😊

I love corn dogs dipped in mustard. Actually, I love hotdogs with just mustard too. Chili dogs aren't as messy if you put the chili on the hotdog in the bun then put a couple of slices of cheese on top of the chili then toast it in the oven. The cheese helps hold the chili in place a little better.

I love pork tenderloin! I was lucky enough to have learned how to cook a loin before I turned up my nose at a dry and tasteless cut. The secret is to sear the outside first then give it about 20 minutes or so in a 325 degree oven. Check with a thermometer and get it out at least ten degrees less than they tell you. The chance of getting anything from tender juicy pork that isn’t brown clean through is vanishingly small. Once you have given that lovely piece of meat about fifteen to twenty minutes to rest (you can make graveyard to go with it if you want) cut into 1/2 slices and dinner. I like it thinner for sandwiches that I can bite right through.

ROOT BEER is also better for you as a DARK soda cuz it does NOT have phosphorus which other dark sodas have. people with kidney disease should avoid dark sodas [w/phosphorus]. it is also low in potassium. ALSO for non-americans, try putting a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream in a MUG and then fill the mug with ROOT BEER soda. you now have a Root Beer Float [spoon and straw recommended]. 10/10

The pork tenderloin sandwich is identical to a schnitzel sandwich. In fact German and Austrian immigrants to the mid-west (not just IN you can find it all over the MidWest) brought it with them. Traditionally, root beer was made with sassafras bark as well as the root, hence "root beer", and wintergreen. It was, yep brewed in a syrup sweetened with molasses. Sassafras does have some medicinal qualities for pain relief and anti-inflammatory. Commercial use of sassafras was banned in the 70s after high doses in lab animals showed carcinogenic effects.

When I was a kid, corn dogs were much more of a regional food. I had never even seen one until I went to college. One day the cafeteria served them. Chili dogs are usually made with a sauce that isn't quite like the chili you eat as a soup. In some areas of the country, the chili sauce has a cinnamon and is seasoned somewhat differently than regular chili. The chili dog has little to do with Mexican food. Now Sonoran hot dogs... (Invented in Hermosillo, Sonoran hot dogs are wrapped in bacon, served in a bolillo bun, and topped with pinto beans, onions, tomatoes, jalapeño salsa, mayonnaise, and mustard.) Down here in Texas, it would a chopped BBQ brisket sandwich not a deep fried pork loin. We grill in the summer. (Because watching your host sweat to death next to a hot grill on a 100F day, while you're seated in the air conditioning, is a special kind of sadistic.) Hamburgers, chicken, steaks, brats.... Served with cold salads and baked beans or ranch-style beans.

I worked at a Place called “Triple X”, a Root-beer stand in Renton, Washington State. We made lots of different root-beer drinks, in heavy root-beer mugs. It was a very popular place. You could come inside to eat, or park at “the curb” in your car, and order through a speaker. Then we would bring it out to you on a tray and put it on a tray by your car window. At some places the servers wore roller skates. We made a drink called a frosty, which was basically a rootbeer and ice cream milkshake. Yummy! Ice cream floats with soft serve ice cream are also to die for! Triple X burgers in a basket with fries were a huge seller also, and Friday nights it was a hot spot for fancy cars and young people meeting up. There are still places like these around the country. A&W had the same type of restaurants, and their root beer is still famous.

Because temperance movements were very common in US history, we have a lot of soft drink flavors that are medicinal tasting. Until the invention of the seltzer bottle they were fermented to contain as little alcohol as possible but did, indeed, contain alcohol so you had to use the medicinal qualities as an excuse. Root beer is a soft drink with a base of sassafras, licorice, ginger and wintergreen (among other flavors). Sarsaparilla is made from a root of the same name. Birch beer is made from birch bark and/or sap and tastes like wintergreen (true wintergreen is an evergreen shrub with pink berries and is the flavorant of pepto bismol) Black cherry is a popular soda flavor not because of the fruit but because of the bark- which was also originally an ingredient in root beer. Basically we’ll ferment anything to see what it tastes like.

Andre, believe it or not, there is something at many state fairs called pig racing, and it's just as it sounds. Little pigs run around a track as fast as they can, to the delight of the hundreds of fairgoers. Chili dogs were actually invented in Los Angeles. Some Europeans don't like root beer, saying it has a taste of medicine because it's made from sassafras, but it's my favorite soft drink. When he mentioned butter peshon ice cream, he was changing the pronunciation of butter pecan just "for giggles".

Corndogs from any set up where they are fresh-made are generally great. And of course if you make them yourself you can tailor the experience. But the frozen ones they sell in big boxes in the supermarkets are generally made from cheaper ingredients, so your mileage will vary there. Butter-pecan is my favorite flavor too, unfortunately it’s getting harder to find in my area.
