This the final part of a trilogy of films of this male European Robin Erithacus rubecula singing his heart out on 30th April 2017. More Robin films may be seen here: • European Robins . By the time that the final clip was filmed he had been singing for almost ten minutes from branches in the middle of a Willow Salix sp. Usually he would sing a softer sub-song to the photographer but on this occasion he was singing at full volume. When the weather was windy he tended to sing from more sheltered places and these intimate views were obtained by the photographer sticking his camera (and head) into the foliage for some of the sequences. This Robin was remarkably tolerant of cameras (and photographers) and he was always unconcerned by the process of being filmed or photographed - even if the lens was only a matter of inches away. This enabled some very close images to be obtained since he was first photographed at the beginning of February 2016.

How wonderful! I've heard people from across the pond comment on how much they like this little bird and I always wondered how it sounded. What a great little singer! Thanks ever so much for posting, great camera work!

Thank you for your kind comments which are much appreciated. The Robin has been adopted as the British National Bird and it is undoubtedly popular. I have been fortunate to have had two male birds (one disappeared in 2017) allow me to photograph and film them from a ridiculously close range (7cm or just under 3 inches from the lens-hood) during the last 4 years. Other birds may ignore you totally including the mates of these males in both cases. These two would happily give me private performances with my head just a foot away from their perches. If you would like to see more Robin films then please take a look at my playlist. David

Sweet, beautiful singing Robin. This bird is really awesome. I was so surprised the first time I saw it in UK, when visited it during the bird fair. Love it so much. The bird is very common in the garden. Cheers.

It's such a beautiful song, yet I notice how he puffs himself up bigger when he hears another robin answering his territorial boast. We have a male and a female robin in our garden. The male often sits in his bush close to me and sings directly to me when I put feed on the feeders near him. It's like a thankyou song. He has occasionally fed from my hand if I put food there before putting it anywhere else.

Lovely sound. I find so relaxing. And yes it amazes me how tame this bird is toward humans. My Garden robin has been very tame. Continue to place some feed down, and, I hope will breed this spring. Joyous.
@DavidPElement

Individual Robins can behave very differently so some can become very confiding and trusting indeed whereas others may ignore people entirely. All a matter of luck. And as you say great when they sing to you too. Hopefully yours will indeed breed.

Is the other bird with the lower tones singing in the background also a Robin or does anyone know? I've been going crazy trying to figure out which bird (and if its a robin) that I always hear singing on really quiet lovely evenings at dusk. Its always the same song and I swear I have heard it in England, in the Channel Islands and I think even in Western Canada I've heard it in the evenings and it's this lower beautiful lilting song that is just the most beautiful thing I have ever heard
@DavidPElement
@DavidPElement 2 года назад
You can hear the song of a male Common Blackbird Turdus merula in the background in addition to a singing Eurasian Wren Troglodytes troglodytes, the drumming of a Great Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos major and the odd call by other birds. Your description fits with that of the song of the Blackbird, a common species in the UK, but absent from the New World. I suspect that another member of the Thrush family may be responsible for the song that you have been hearing in Canada. You can hear the song of the Eurasian Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla, another melodious songster, in some of my other films.

Awesome Video there David. Both malle and female Robins sing. This Robin is 100% female by the way. The male is in your signaling danger video. Do you want to know how to tell them apart?
@DavidPElement
@DavidPElement 7 лет назад
Thank you. Both sexes do indeed sing (particularly in winter) but this one is unquestionably a male and he is the same bird that you have seen signalling danger in one of my other films. I have been watching him from very close range now for over 15 months so I know his behaviour intimately and his mate is very shy by comparison, to a point at which I can only obtain photographs of her occasionally with a telephoto lens. By contrast I can film and photograph this male from a range of just a few inches as even by Robin standards he is remarkably tame. The female is also slightly larger and her plumage is not quite so bright (lacking the orange flashes on the wings that this male has gained with maturity) but the difference between the appearance of the sexes is subtle. I have seen them mating too. - David
