I got old-school Red Means Recording vibes from your fun vid😃 ...btw for a eurorack beginner, you _really_ have a leg up on other beginners with such an understanding of what you've got there + how to use it productively. NICE
@@whaleshaveteeth I went into it shortly...but sold it all very quickly. I am one for very quick workflows, and modular just wasn't it for me. But it sure is interesting and fun!
To solve the problem with flickering screen you need to adjust shutter speed of the camera. At some value it will be in sync with OLED screen refresh rate and the image should look good. Just go through different values and check visualy.
Thank you for listing your gear -- and great notes too! One question -- where did you buy the cables from, and what lengths have you found to be most useful and least useful?
Thanks! I bought my cables from Schneidersladen. The cyan ones are Tiptop Stackcables and the rest are Black Market Modular. I honestly don't know the lenghts lol.
Good work and welcome to the dark side 😎 2 big voices seems 1 too many for a teeny system like that. I'd be tempted to swap one of them out for some logic and utilities which will expand the possibilities of what you have there
Haha, thanks! I like the idea of having two voices, especially if the other can play chords and the other be monophonic, but I’ve only now realized that the voices I have share a lot of similarities. Plaits has two modes of Rings and also the Rings’ hidden chord mode so basically I have those two features twice in the rack. I’ve been toying with the idea of swapping Rings into Intellijel’s uVCF which I already have and getting ALM’s MFX to add more sound design power. Did you have something special in mind for logic and utilities? I’m completely green with this so all guidance is very welcome 😅
Modular is great for developing leads imho. Its generative capabilities are also cool. Beyond that, a quantizer is essential for all other melodic projects.
@@whaleshaveteeth Yeah, its definitely a new way of approaching music. So explorative! Its like the music leads you lol I got a nifty case with the usual suspects (MI Rings, Plaits and Marbles) to generate ambient soundscapes specifically. Enjoy it greatly.
Yep! I’ve realized that I really like scuplting the sound and adding effects in modular, but the actual sequencing (especially chords) is so much easier outside eurorack, that my next iteration will be a pure fx box.
They're so versatile! I'm actually just editing a video about making a beat using only sounds from Plaits. And haha, I'll have to try that as well, if it would make housekeeping more pleasant.
@@whaleshaveteethoh yes, plaits is a great voice. My friend has it. I tried it, it's very versatile. I would recommend you also to check Stages with Qiemem firmware but honestly I think you have enough mod sources already. Pam + OC is a powerful combo.
I'm planning a small and portable setup since months but can't figure out which modules to buy. Too many choices! Your config is valuable input for me and I'm looking forward to more content. Thanks for sharing!
That’s so hard indeed! I just ended up getting something that can do a bit of this and that. The modules seem to hold their value quite well in the second-hand market too, so it’s not a dramatic loss when switching modules if I don’t like something later.
They have a lot of similarities, but also very unique capabilities. I think Pams as a master clock and the brains of the whole rack where as O_C has an endless amount of utility features. I’ve mostly used it as a sequencer, quantizer, USB midi interface, ADSR envelope and LFO.
For the flickering you have to match your shutter speed to the refresh rate of the screen you’re recording. There’s other tricks in post you could try but uh, they don’t really work (I know from experience). It’s a curse you just have to live with most of the time if you can’t fix it.
@@whaleshaveteeth just be careful cuz adjusting shutter speed impacts your motion blur. I think screen flicker is probably preferable to too little or too much motion blur, but that’s up to you. Regardless, most videos of screens end up with at least a little flicker or other artifacts. Good luck!
How is that Pamela’s new workout working out ? I want a modular just for that module LOL Na modular is very expensive... great vid the OP-Z and beat made me want this set up
I'm still very new to this but Pam's seems like a good overall powerhouse and it's definitely the core of my setup. And yeah, feeling this in my wallet too 😅
really nice love it, gonna have a similar setup soon with the. qu bit bloom, surface, plaits, bead, pamelas new workout and the ochd by divkid. So since it's similar to yours, it feels really inspiring to see what you can do with this system. Question: Did you run the guitar straight into Beads? Cheers, Lostsense :)
For the screen flickering I remember @OoraMusic has this problem, which he solved via someone in the comments. I don't remember which video, but you could always drop him a line to ask?
Thanks a lot for the tip! Someone also advised matching the screen refresh rate to the camera's shutter speed. I'll test that later and see where that takes me.
@@whaleshaveteeth I don't make videos so I can't help. However, I remember the solution (Oora was advised) was something simple like moving the frame in some simple way.
First day with your first modular synth and you magically know how to use it all including PNW and Beads. Hmmmm... a little skeptical. Cool video though.
There's no magic involved, it's simply from watching dozens of hours of RU-vid tutorials and showcase videos when figuring out which modules to buy and while waiting for them to arrive on mail. Plus, it's not like they are super complicated or anything? PNW literally has one knob, one button and a few settings for each output?
Oh for sure! Here's the ModularGrid link: www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/1834675 By the way, if I were to start this from scratch, I probably wouldn't get Plaits AND Rings, because most of the sounds I've ended up using (chords & physical modeling ones) can be produced by both. On top of that, I like the wavetables on Plaits but Beads also has a wavetable mode, so I've ended up thinking about switching Plaits to another, more "traditional" oscillator and another FX module.
@@whaleshaveteeth thanks for the info ! Yes , makes sense… I was thinking about the behringer Brains module to pair some mutable instruments … will see… thanks again !
ive always wanted my own modular snyth to zone out and make beats. Perhaps, do some videos for IG. How much does this cost? I am a beginner and I want to get started but don't have lot of equipment.
There are quite and active second-hand modular market out there, and I spent maybe 1300€ or something on it. There are tons of very good eurorack beginner tutorials on RU-vid - I'd start from them.
Thinking about getting into synths a lot recently. Can’t decide wether to go with a modular system or something digital. Thought about the op-1 or op-z a lot. The semi-modular synths from moogs look nice too.. i have no idea where to start.. any suggestions?
That's quite a broad topic to answer in a comment :) It depends heavily on your own experience in music production, what you want to achieve, what type of budget you are on, etc. For example, modular synths are quite superior in the tinkering and immersive experience category, but if you have no experience in music production, the learning curve is quite steep to get to a point where you get something that sounds good out of your system. Of course, if you just want to experiment and the result doesn't need to sound necessarily musically good, it's still a fun pastime.
@@Jmdeleeuw- I play the Trumpet for about 10 years and taught myself how to play the guitar. I also worked with dj controllers in the past so I‘m not completely new to electronic music. I would like to jam for hours and create melodic edm or little ambient tracks. Never touched a DAW in my live only did post processing for voices and sfx.
@@simonangerer6847 Well, picking up a DAW is the most versatile thing you can do. Especially if you wanna incorporate the trumpet or guitar. If you want to keep it physical (not on a screen) but still wanna be able to make full tracks you would need a groovebox of some kind. Op-z or OP1. Or even a digitakt for example. Im still not quite sure what you would like to achieve with it tho. Are you specifically looking for a synth or might you also be interested in a sampler? Fo you wanna be able to do drums, melody, bass, fx processing? And ofc, what is your budget?
i think its more worth it if youre going for sounds and utility that arent based on software personally. regardless, this setup is pretty limited as is.
