Nice video, I hope it’s not limited to 3 episodes. The first step to getting into Eurorack is cancelling your credit cards with lots of unused credit available. Even if you have been financially responsible in the past, most humans aren’t up for this level of self control.

Ha. Exactly. I'm just getting into modular and my credit cards are in extreme danger. I'm going to attempt to learn and try as much DIY as possible. You can get a ton of modules for 1/6 the price that way and gain some great skills in the process. Tiptop is definitely getting my $600 for that Circadian Rhythms sequencer, though (drool).

My own strategy for saving money & space: use a standalone synth for sound generation, and dedicate your eurorack for effects/processing only
@NoirEtBlancVie
@NoirEtBlancVie 6 лет назад
I can totally see this strategy working, what standalone synth do you use?
@josephf7306
@josephf7306 6 лет назад
Mostly focused on manipulating/modulating acoustic instruments like guitar, etc. I've had an Akai Miniak, but will very soon be upgrading to either a Blofeld or a Dreadbox Nyx. :)
@tristanawild380
@tristanawild380 6 лет назад
Morphagene is 'spensey but it seems like a nice way to both sample a sound source into Eurorack and start mangling it. Can also function as a stereo line-in. It'll probably be my first big acquisition. One thing to consider FX wise is that, for some things, pedals may just be cheaper/more-effective options. If it's got an expression port it's controllable by CV! Friends I know tend to leave end-of-chain effects (like 'verb that won't be modulated) to pedals. Certainly there's a charm to just having everything in a rack though.
@josephf7306
@josephf7306 6 лет назад
Yeah pedal manufacturers obsess over "tone" cuz guitarists are picky, but it results in the creamiest sounding effects pedals. To me, eurorack's more focused on high-level sound manipulation and signal manipulation/inversion/etc.
@GuitarsAndSynths
@GuitarsAndSynths 6 лет назад
this is wise- you won't go broke or crazy. I plan to do this since I already have Moog and Elektron synths that can control via CV/MIDI.

I first watched this at the same time as you, 3 years ago, and I held out for so long. I even satiated my thirst with a new 2600 and a subharmonicon along with a Zoia and some nifty boutique pedals...I was doing so well. I just bought a rackbrute and 4 mutable instruments modules. Dammit.

@@yourmaw8790 Hey! I’m interested in the DFAM and Subharmonicon combo from Moog but I don’t know if I should rather spend that money on a rack, what do you think? Cheers!
@yourmaw8790
@yourmaw8790 3 года назад
@@JX-jk9qn hello! id always say go for a rack because you can plan it out and really make it your own. I went for a more granular sampling machine so i ended up with one oscillator and the rest utilities, sequencers and granular based units like the morphagene and arbhar. Its important to plan these things out and have a clear vision for what you want your rack to be able to do. The price of a subH and DFAM would go a long way in starting your modular journey. I say, do some research, plan it, and pick yourself up a powered case with a module or two. Be prepared that if you go too small with the case you might end up spending more in the future! i learned this the hard way! Behringer Go seems like a decent sized case for the price. Good luck friend!

Great video! I started with a Doepfer Dark Energy and was hooked when I started patching. Soon I had a Doepfer 2 unit height case like you have now and now I've gotten myself a 3 HE case because of how a modular system can grow but it's managable if you start with a few and then over time build it up... :-D Main thing that I noticed is that it's surprising how important utility modules like multiples are. And cables, like you mention. You never have enough cables! :-D

Lots of good info right off the bat. I made the mistake of just getting modules I really wanted in the beginning and ignoring need. Very expensive and and important lesson. I would like to point out that if you are handy with wood you can build a case for about 20 bucks and some work. This is minus the power and rails of course. For a couple hundred dollars you can build a massive case. I have a 13u 104hp case because I put in the work on the wood. Also, if you’re handy with a soldering iron than power becomes much cheaper. Andrew from nonlinear circuits put up tons of case plans on thingverse both for building or even 3D printing cases, and it’s all free.

Take me to Church & I'll listen like a dog... I have been asking the wrong questions, part of the learning curve I guess, I'm hoping this is the right one.. I own a Benjolin 2v, a 0 control, Erica synths Sample Drum, WMD pro output & Maths, installed in a powered rack, all hooked up & working. The question I have... are there modules or parts am I missing "meaning" I have noise makers Maths & Benjolin, I have a keyboard, 0 control, I have a method to bring in sample sources & "drum sounds" (I think I'm a little confused on this point " Sample DRUM right? ) & what I think is an amp WMD Pro Output every video I've seen , does not explain or show the leads to an amp & the powered speakers or mixer so I guess my question is three fold, 1. do I have all the necessary modules 2. more information on once the sound leaves the rack how is it amplified properly those options it is assumed in this community from the videos & other resources this is common knowledge but its not 3. basic patching to begin to explore the different sounds On Modular grid .net when I built a virtual synth & started to experiment with it it gives me this message ×This Rack does not contain any Modules that are playable in TrueGrid. I have been using the guitar pedal of my sons FX 100 by Flamma the amp contained & head phone jack & volume it to produce sounds , but I don't like the "Barney Fife" method, & my kid wants his pedal back I hope this better explains my dilemma, any advise helps, thanking anyone who answers in advance, kind of feeling like Ricky from trailer park boys , sad because I only have my grade 10, in this very cool group of people

HOLY FUCK! When you showed the prices of the wood cases... I could buy a lot of "funny trashplay" synths like Monotron or so 5 times with that money. Why are only the casing that expensive? This looks like a normal Eurorack has the cost of a small flat in the middle of a populated city. I'd rather stick with Reaktor 6 for a while until I really know what I want and can do. If this stuff was cheaper, I would consider it... but you could buy a TB-303 with that kind of money. ='(
@NoirEtBlancVie
@NoirEtBlancVie 6 лет назад
So true, the barrier of entry is crazy high, though the payoff is maybe worth it only if you have the disposable to justify it. Both you and I wish it was cheaper, my little case is all I could afford at the time.

But why is the price so high for a "cheap wooden box"? Is this a module-sized standard which got quality ratings?

Honestly it's the power supply. Truth is, if you've got the skills creating the box yourself is the way to go. Most cases are way overpriced.

Brian H. Also for those that might be reading this, cardboard is also a great way to prototype your custom rack and ensure that your modules with fit with the power supply... made an oops? Out with the craft knife or box cutter and attack it again. It's much quicker than cutting plywood or particle board. :-)

I grew up recording and producing hardcore bands in HS/college. I keep hoping it will come back, but POP and Hip-Hop found a way to be the “cool” thing to do, someone just has to find a way to make it “cool” to be in a band again. It must not be profitable or something, if it were labels would be pushing it more heavily.

Great choice! I think for the size and price this is a fantastic deal! Congrats. What modules are you gonna start with?
@aloyyyys
@aloyyyys 6 лет назад
Definitely cheaper! Intellijel's was four times more expensive with all the 1U modules I wanted (one day though!) This is what I'm getting first, feel free to offer up some suggestions: www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/575483

Definitely a good starter kit, damn look at that price though! Hahaha you want to eventually fill the case? Good call on the Black Wavetable VCO, it's so versatile!

Yep all my part-time money is going into it! I have you to thank for choosing the Black Wavetable VCO ;-) It's work in progress but this is more or less what I have planned for the full case: www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/575552

As of 2021, by far the best starting point for super broke people (like me) is the NiftyBundle. For $250 you get a powered case with a sequencer, midi and audio converters, and two voices. You're getting $400 of value for $250. Did this and I'm so happy.

Just got my own Doepfer LC6 in last week :D Seems to be the best bang for the buck for a low cost case (it's in the name!). The cheaper Skiff case has issues with depth and power consumption, whereas the larger Doepfer LC9 is also power starved when fully filled. I put a carbon gray stain on my LC6 and it's looking great- similar to the EP-208 shown. One money conscious way to go about things is DIY. I currently have the components for my first few modules in plastic bags- just waiting on the PCBs to arrive from international orders. With some time and a moderate amount of money invested into a soldering setup, it can decrease the cost on certain modules. Grabbing things used on ebay or Muffs rather than getting too carried away with pre-planning to purchase everything new seems to be a good way to go as well. Finally, I'd look into what your other gear can provide- my Minilogue will serve as my clock initially (though Korg products like the ML and Volca's are half-tempo in Eurorack), and with an English Tear my MS-20 Mini can provide a lot of utility functionality at first.

Can I get a few programs to do all of this virtually and not spend as much money
@NoirEtBlancVie
@NoirEtBlancVie 4 года назад
You could, lots of manufacturers make plugin versions of their modules. Reason was always a great spot to start for a similar interface. For me it’s all about the physical interface and not looking at a computer screen. So trust me, Eurorack is extremely cost prohibitive

Can you By the power supplies separately ? Wouldn't it be Cheaper and then you wouldn't have to worry about how many Patch cables because you can choose than ? In fact what would you need for the power supplies? Batters how many wolts and that green board what's it called ? In the next series Could you please go a little more in-depth on the power supply Case stuff .please but GREAT VID 👌👍
@NoirEtBlancVie
@NoirEtBlancVie 6 лет назад
I hear what you’re saying, since this is a Beginners Series I wanted to make this extremely uncomplicated. So that’s why I suggested going with a pre-installed power supply, it’s my recommendation. So no, unfortunately there will be no expounding on idea of buying your own power supply, as I personally can’t recommend it. (And this series took like 80 hours to film and edit). Part 3 is going up this Tuesday.
