I have to brag - I'm the guy Michelle Trachtenberg steals french fries from in the Amsterdam Bakery scene. Michelle and Scott were cool as hell and so were the directors. If you're a big fan of this movie, you need to know the story about the baker who scolds Scott and Michelle about the brownies. Two rasta guys were hired that day ("Rasta Waiter" and "Rasta Chef") but neither of them were actors - and the one who had all the lines was too shy and didn't want to do it - so they switched parts - and the guy you see (Go Go Jean Michel Francis) was amazing and went on to act in other movies. Also, Matt Damon was never intended to appear in Eurotrip but at the time of filming, "The Brothers Grimm" was shooting in the same city (Prague, Czechia) and he unexpectedly offered to do the cameo! And yes, Europe is exactly like Eurotrip. Europeans are so cool - you should definitely go!
It's an absolute sin this film got lost in the "frat"-type wave of the early 2000s. It's head and shoulders above the others. Still holds up. Still hysterical.
I still consider this movie to have the most random and funniest Matt Damon cameo. The way he turns up here with that killer and fitting “Scotty Doesn’t Know” earworm still makes me smile today.
You're completely right about why this film works. Yes it's raunchy but it's also very wholesome. Its a group of friends supporting and helping out another friend.
Matt Damon took the role because he was friends with the screenwriters from college and they asked him to be in it. He filmed it while he was in Prague working on another film.
I think the scene was filmed actually in a poor housing project in Bucharest, wasn´t it? The movie is totally ridiculous, that's why it's great. If someone believes exchange rates work like that... the price of lets say, one liter of milk, is about the same in any country. Probably even more expensive in a country with high inflation. One nickel can be worth 1 million of the local currency, it won´t mean you will be able to buy what 1 million dollars can buy, just means that 1 million of the local currency are worth nothing.
@@rogeriopenna9014 Afaik, every scene in Eurotrip was filmed in the Czech Republic (Czechia) - from "American Highschool", London, Paris, Amsterdam to Bratislava, Germany and Vatican. Bratislava exterior shots were done in Milovice (specifically former military housings from Soviet era - now renovated).
I get way too much email now for that to maintain funniness in my case sadly. I still set 'Message for you, sir' from Monty Python as my SMS tone though.
@scottv8124 Yeah, short of a nuclear disaster wiping all recordings of it and hunting down everyone who enjoys it, that's going to be an impossible task. And Simone knew the song before seeing the movie, so just going after people who had seen Eurotrip wouldn't help. Anyone could know the song and teach it to others.
@@scottv8124 Remember that song "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks? That was my friend's name (Meredith not Bitch lol). She got so much shit from that song, though.
"That's a lot of money for one camera" Trust me dude, a used DSLR can sell for more than 1,000 euro, and a Leica M6 in the early 2000s would be even more expensive
This was written and directed by three of the writers from "Seinfeld". You can tell the characters have a similar dynamic to the Seinfeld characters. Like Seinfeld, it's three guys and a girl. One of the guys is uptight, one is outrageous, and the other is relatively normal while the girl is just one of the guys.
I remember seeing this in high school. my friend's dad volunteered to take like 6 of us. he laughed his ass off, wife found out what we watched, mega furious. for context, dads a fire fighter and mom is ultra religious lol. This is one of those movies what makes a memory hilarious.
Half of my class had a protestant religion lesson, where the teacher put on a DVD on Martin Luther (not King). He left, they swapped the disk for Euro Trip, he returned during the scene in the confessional and thought the whole class had been watching a porn collectively the whole time. 😂 Yes, there was detention.
This was the first movie Michelle Trachtenberg did once _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_ was over, so I think the idea was to get away from the character (without ruining her career, like some actors unintentionally do after playing a famous and/or long-standing part), so she was in a raunchy-coms, but considered the "good girl" of the group. And I agree that a lot of raunchy-coms are being cruel for the sake of bad jokes. The jokes in this movie were funny because they weren't cruel. I think that's why this movie's been gaining in popularity over time while most other raunchy-coms are dying or dead.
From what I understand the movie was pretty much universally loved because it took shots at just ALL the stereotypes for every country/region including having the American tourists just being constantly clueless.
Yeah, my experience too. I'm from Poland, I watched it with friends around the time of release, and we all loved it and quoted it constantly. Its portrayal of Eastern Europe really amused us, we were not offended in the slightest. Actually "oh my god, we're in Eastern Europe" was one of our favorite quotes.
We were on a holiday in Thailand in 2011 and one night we were at a nightclub in Bangkok and Scotty Doesn't Know came on and most of the people (including us) there started singing.
This movie turned Michelle Trachtenberg into my teenage crush (you can guess which scene) and also features a scene from my home country (no, not the fancy ones, the "Eastern Europe" one :D).
It took me ages to realize that Cooper is also Tim Gutterson, the veteran sniper in Justified. The roles are so different. And it still feels kinds iffy to see Michelle Trachtenberg so sexy when for so long she was just Buffy's annoying little sister...
Same... and after so many resets, the little green goblin dude in the menu would get more and more aggravated that you haven't started the movie if I remember right. I wonder how many people never knew about it.
Yes that is Matt Damon singing Scotty Doesn't Know. One of my favourite comedies ever. I'm laughing and crying while watching your reaction. It's so funny. Good chose patrons.
Scotty Doesn't Know is still one of the greatest songs ever created. I still listen to it on my playlist to this day. Also, it's such an underrated movie. For those who watched it back in the day will never forget that Scotty doesn't know. I loved his friend getting a promotion after being MIA the whole internship.
I find it funny that you think he got a lot for his Leica M7. You can buy a used one today for between 3500 and 4500 Euros! It originally for for about 3k in 2004, and those are pro cameras that don't depreciate. A mint condition one new in a box today would sell at auction for 17k easily. Leica is like the Rolls Royce of cameras. Also Matt Damon did this movie because he went to Harvard with the co-writers and directors Jeff Schaeffer & David Mandel.
I think most people that have seen this movie knew y’all were gonna love it. Such a forgotten classic of the early 2000s raunchy comedy era. I think George is right. It holds up really well because it’s not mean spirited. It’s just fun
When I watched this with my movie night group, our Northern Irish friend saw the map in the credits with the Union Jack covering all of Ireland and called out "This is a fucking hate crime!" Ever since then we always say that whenever we see something we don't like in a movie we're all watching together. So glad a channel I follow has finally watched this!
It does let you know what kind of Northern Irish friend you have which is a Irish Nationalist/Republican. An Irish Unionist from Northern Ireland wouldn't have had any problem with it.
@@NovusIgnis Maybe go and read the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement 1998. It allows people in Northern Ireland to be Irish, British or both. I'm guessing you know nothing about the history of UK and Ireland?
fun fact, in Italy Fred Armisen's character was considered offensive, so in the dubbing they changed him from being Italian to being Mexican, instead of saying "mi scusi" he says "buenas dias".
No, not offensive at all, was changed in spanish cause all the movie was dubbed in italian, and a guy who speaks the same language was considered "wrong" so they choose spanish.
I'm so happy you included the subplot of Cooper interning at a law firm. I've watched several reactions to this movie and no one includes that, and it's a hilarious little ongoing joke.
Great reaction! Eurotrip is one of my all-time favorites. It is super smart and well acted and, I agree, it doesn't depend on humiliation for humor like so many other comedies do.
One of my all time favorite comedies, so damn funny! "You didn't tell your boss you were going to Europe." "They would have stopped paying me. This seemed easier"
One of the most defining films of the early 2000s. It was absolutely glacial in terms of cultural impact. Everyone knew the 'Scotty doesn't know' song and it was often played at parties, bars, clubs, etc. It was just so instrumental in that little era that it was essentially required viewing. I look back on it so, so fondly.
The DVD special features has two directors commentaries, one is normal, the second they play a drinking game and drink every time there is underage drinking shown. They get hammered and want to order pizza but don't know if the delivery guy could get past the gate guard and get to the studio. They also point out a clue that this wasn't filmed in America when you can see the purple toilet paper when Scottie pees in the bathtub, and the top flushing toilet.
While I mostly agree with Simone about viewing Michelle Trachtenberg in that role.....that silver top she was wearing....very nice. Move movies need outtakes during the credits.
I was blasting 'Scotty Doesn't Know' one time late at night in my car and this other car pulls up to me at a red light and just goes NUTS! It was an awesome moment lol.
It's worse. In the early 2000s, it was like this. Now it's like Prague but way more expensive. It's very good looking city, but then which one in Europe isn't?
I was lucky enough to be at the 10th Anniversary Screening at the Arclight-Hollywood. The entire cast was there for a Q&A. Even snagged a Vanderrsexxx t-shirt. One funny answer that i remember was that they had to have Solo Cups overnighted from the states to shoot the graduation party scene. Never dreamt they wouldn’t be able to get them there and it just looked wrong when they tried to do the scene with the only generic cups they could find there. It was great night at the Movie House.
This movie was much better than road trip. I loved the cameos. vandersexxx mistress was Xena Warrior Princess, the robber that stole Jamie’s pack was Diedrick bader from (Rex from Napoleon Dynamite) Obviously Matt Damon, David hasslehoff and Fred armisen as the train perv.
One thing I noticed about myself is that while I do not mind raunchy or explicit content I never liked vulgarity just for the sake of it. This movie never really crosses that line, sometimes just a hint of something is enough to make the joke work. It's hilarious!!
Matt Damon has said that to this day after all the movies he's done this is the one movie that gets quoted to him the most and he was only a cameo essentially 😅
They just don't make comedies like this anymore. A classic for me that I saw as a freshman in highschool. This was before I knew who Matt Damon was so for me he will always be the guy from Eurotrip
The first time I saw this I could not catch my breath during the Heinreich scene in the apartment. There are just so many great jokes in this movie and Vinney Jones is a hilarious in every scene.
Absolutely fell in love with this movie after 20 years 😂 In the theaters was such a blast, smiling throughout the whole thing. The entire cast was made for them. Bullet tooth Tony and Boris the Bullet Dodger from Snatch made it even better 👌
First time I saw this, during the "Mi scuzi" train ride, I literally fell of my chair laughing. This is one of the few go to comedies that will always bring a a smile to my face.
For the record, Paris to Berlin distance wise is about Miami to Atlanta for people in the southern US or a little further then Vancouver to Calgary for the Canadians or Houston, TX to Roswell, NM or Lubbock, TX to Brownsville, TX (YES TEXAS IS THAT BIG).
Old School is another classic, along with Road Trip. I also have done something similar with work and being in another state while supposedly being there lol.
To answer George's question - this movie was a phenomenon in Romania back in the day. I'd say more teens back then (as I was) preferred this over American Pie for example. It was humor poking fun at countries we poked fun at. An all time classic, should've spawned a franchise for other continents.
It's a very underrated movie, not sure why more people haven't seen it or heard of it. Guess everyone just passed it over because during that time frame of it's release a lot of these types of movies were coming out.
A few things that happen in American movies that absolutely do not happen in real life: 1. High school students making a huge deal out of graduation and then heading off to college or their future careers THE VERY NEXT DAY and not seeing each other again until the 20 year reunion. 2. Bachelor parties taking place the night before (or the weekend of) the wedding. 3. Stepping into the shower before you turn the water on.
My favorite fact about this movie (which may or may not still be true) is that Jacob Pitts (who plays Cooper) lives in Bratislava and is married to a Slovakian woman.
