Venue: Gaiety Theatre, Dublin, Ireland Date: Saturday, 3 April 1971 Presentation: Bernadette Ni Gallchoir Voting: Per country, 2 jurymembers each awarded 5-1 points to every song. Number of countries: 18
This really was a very strong song contest. Wonderful Severine really sold her song and it has become a classic. However I think the Italian song was a great ballad and so well sung by Massimo Ranieri and I think it deserved better than 5th place. Tonicha, Karina, Katja Ebstein, Clodagh all gave great performances. The Belgian couple did well to learn their song at short notice when Nicol of Hugo & Nicol fell ill with jaundice. It was such a pity sound problems spoiled the beginning of the Dutch song which was very beautiful, as was the Swiss song with delightful Peter , Sue & Marc. All in all a high quality evening.
@@diegoperezperea128 I did really enjoy the Spanish entry. She really made the most of her three minutes. I love the UK song, but the Top 3 this year are all very excellent and deserving of their high placings.
In that case Miss Italy was probably trying to cheat as well because she gave 1 point 12 times, didn't vote on her own obviously and gave 2 more 2 points so only 5 songs got 3 or more off of her.
As I've questioned above, did the jurors just vote there and then during the voting sequence, or did they vote during the show and then confirm their vote on stage> Either way, this was a stupid system and I have no idea how they thought this was a good idea!
People should realise how big an event this was for the Irish broadcaster RTE - in 1971 they were approaching 10 years old, and were still a limited company. TV on RTE was only on air for 6 hours each evening. Money was limited. Hosting the Eurovision showed that little RTE could host an international event.
My top 10 1) Menina ( Portugal) - 12 points 2) Diese Welt ( Germany) - 10 points 3) Tijd ( Netherlands) - 8 points 4) Tie Uuteen päivään ( Finland) - 7 points 5) One day love ( Ireland) - 6 points 6) L' amore e unn attimo ( Italy) - 5 points 7) En un mundo nuevo ( Spain) - 4 points 8) Un banc, un arbre, une rue ( Monaco) - 3 points 9) Lykken er ( Norway) - 2 points 10) Jack in the box ( United Kingdom) - 1 point
I cannot believe that it was 50 years ago, last month, that Monaco won the contest in '71. Some of the songs presented in this contest were really catchy. And..... Is it just my eyes deceiving me or has Luxembourg decided to give only 1 point to (almost) every song. Thank you very much for sharing and Greetings from the U.S. ! - Edwyn Sanchez
Thay is why this voting system was only used two years. Many countries tended to give few points just to have more chances of ending themselves in a better position.
Finland was a head of its time with a fun choreography and unique musical movements. But I do believe all the songs were sweet and in the native languages. That's how it should be today. Everything in English is boring!
Useless irrelevant fact...during the postcard for Ireland (around 48:15) you'll see a clip of a Boeing 747, following a small, propellor aircraft. Aer Lingus took delivery of its first 747 in 1971. The aircraft it's following is actually a replica of its first ever aircraft - a Dh 84 Dragon from 1936.
The most fair voting system. All countries receive at least two points from each country and in a contest with 18 participants 38 points is better than the terrify "null points"
Here are my personal votes/rankings, i'am from the Netherlands 12 points: Monaco - Séverine - Un banc, un arbre, une rue 10 points: Spain - Karina - En un mundo nuevo 8 points: Switzerland - Peter, Sue & Marc - Les illusions de nos vingt ans 7 points: Germany - Katja Ebstein - Diese Welt 6 points: Belgium - Lily Castel & Jacques Raymond - Goeiemorgen, morgen 5 points: France - Serge Lama - Un jardin sur la terre 4 points: United Kingdom - Clodagh Rodgers - Jack in the box 3 points: Italy - Massimo Ranieri - L'amore è un attimo 2 points: Sweden - Family Four - Vita vidder 1 point : Norway - Hanne Krogh - Lykken er
Wonderful Europe, when East and West were divided, before Islam came, when the English were and could be English, French French, Spanish Spanish, life was just beautiful and full of excitement.
News Note 2. Angela Farrell finished 11th of 18 in the First Eurovision Song Contest to be Held in Ireland. Angela Farrell Sang Very Well Here. Angela Farrell Became The First Irish Woman To Sing at the Eurovision Song Contest Representing Ireland. In 1969 and 1970 The Two previous Girl Singers were from Northern Ireland, UK.
Look at Bernardette in national colours of Ireland. So cute... The song from Luxembourg is beyond his time. Swedish song reminds me of Sweden 1996. Norvegian song is oldfashion but so nice and funny.
Is this the first year they film the direct reactions of the contestants to their points? I love to see it :) Also love how 2nd and 3rd place got a prize too!! A great top 3, but all the songs were great
Yup. That’s the magic of traditional Irish folk music or songs sung in the Irish language. Ireland also sent an entry sung entirely in Irish at the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest but it was criminally under-voted.
I thought this was a great year - the first in my home country. Bernadette was a great host and RTE put on a good show despite the cramped conditions in the Gaiety. The big setback this year was the voting system, boring and the votes from Luxembourg were a joke. It's a pity that the 12 points system was not introduced this year.

Wonderful! Without knowing the outcome, or the language, I voted Monaco the winner as soon as I heard it. Great performance, very uplifting, and a repeated chorus. How could it fail !
My personal list from best to worst: 1. Portugal 2. Luxembourg 3. Germany 4. Monaco 5. Norway 6. Spain 7. France 8. Austria 9. Italy 10. Switzerland 11. Ireland 12. Netherlands 13. Yugoslavia 14. United Kingdom 15. Finland 16. Malta 17. Sweden 18. Belgium
A rather lackluster year, not many evergreens, and the Gaiety Theatre was just too small and it really came out that way on screen. The voting system was bad too, but at least it was used as the backbone for the voting system that would be introduced in 1975. My faves are Katja Ebstein, the Family Four and Peter, Sue & Marc.
This had to be the smallest venue ever in Eurovision history. Ireland could barely afford to host the event, even the colour cameras had to be borrowed from the BBC.

RTE was a black and white transmission station📺 at the time, they were doing behind the scenes colour 🌈experimentation, but did they get external help with cameras and satellites etc? 🤔
I suspect they may have received some outside help from the likes of the BBC. The colour transmission of the 1968 contest from London had set the bar so I suspect they were keen to impress. In later years they hosted the contest on a number of consecutive occasions (in the case of the 1993 contest in quite a remote location) so had built up quite a comprehensive bank of technical expertise (on screen digital scoreboards, satellite video feeds for voting etc) so we're able to share that guidance and knowledge with the BBC when the UK hosted again in 1998.
Yes they did. The BBC loaned RTE colour cameras and a colour outside broadcast unit. BBC and RTE thankfully used the same 625 line colour system. BBC however on their feed made sure they got extra credit during their end credits.
Also there was no satellites used back in 1971. It was all done with microwave links and cable. Eurovision was linked to Britain and Ireland by undersea cables, and microwave links. Satellite would not be the norm until a decade later.

I thought I'd accidentally switched over to Play School when Luxembourg came on. I think the girl from Norway was a bit hard done by. I had that one well in the top half. Germany was my winner, for what that's worth!
according to the wikipedia page this edition of eurovision was transmitted in agrentina, brazil, ethiopia, hong kong, jamaica, kenya, mauritania, mauritius, sierra leone, thailand, trinidad and tobago, tunisia, uganda and the US. i keep wondering why so many
My thoughts exactly. We'll give everyone the least and everyone else will vote fairly so we'll have more chance. They couldn't possibly have both thought nearly every song was worth 1 out of 5.
le concours de l' EUROVISION est en deuil cette année-là le chanteur Français JEAN-PAUL MAURIC qui représentait la FRANCE en 1961 , décède l'année ou une autre Française gagne pour MONACO , en 1971.
My points: Yugoslavia 1 point Belgium 2 points UK 3 points Netherlands 4 points Spain 5 points Finland 6 pounts Italy 7 points Portugal 8 points Germany 10 points Monaco 12 points - a beautiful performance from Séverine and a thoroughly deserved victory.
My own top five rating varies, but you are right about the mediocre songs. Eurovision used to be an actual song contest, now it's all about gimmicks and bloc voting.
What don't you understand? She presented in both official languages of the EBU (French and English) as well as the 1st official language of Ireland (Irish).
Unfortunately I didn't enjoy any of the songs in this year. The winning song deserved it. I did like the British song . I didn't like the voting system too but the presenter was great.
