EV Range Anxiety Test: Can We Make It from Petaling Jaya to Ipoh? | YS Khong Driving

Everyone is curious about fully electric vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz EQB. Whilst we all know it is a MPV, we do wonder if it can really take long journeys away from home base.
In Malaysia, the government fully encourages electrification and besides tax incentives and lower road tax for electric vehicles, it also encourages the development of an efficient charging network.
Thus, an outstation drive is no longer an issue. Along the North-South Expressway, there already exists a healthy network of available charging stations, equipped with both AC and DC chargers at distances of under 100 kilometers, and this network is fast growing.
We did a run from Petaling Jaya to Ipoh and back, and despite a practical range of a little over 320+ km on the Mercedes-Benz EQB, which was enough to take us to Ipoh, we only needed a short charge to give it enough juice to get back home.
With a little bit of route planning, i.e. knowing the rough locations where there are chargers, we could get to our destination and back with ease.
We logged the journey and gladly share it with you - do watch it and let us have your questions and/or comments below.

James May said it best, it's not range anxiety, it's charging anxiety. We get it, these cars go far on a single charge but people don't want to wait for an hour at a charging station where they just sit around twiddling their thumbs. And that's assuming there's no one in front of you in the line. IMO, electric car manufacturers and infrastructure makers are going about charging the whole wrong way. Give me a car that goes 200KM and charges in about 3 minutes rather than one that goes 600KM and takes 40 minutes to recharge. Won't touch electric cars till then.

@@mchief190 you’ll need a megawatt charger if want to charge in minutes.

i totally agree, James May really change my perspective on this. its not range anxiety its changing anxiety. Till the day that changing is widely available now(key word now, not "in future") and it can recharge in

In Kuching City there are only 3 public charging stations. On the outskirts of Kuching there's none. No where I'm going to buy an ev in the near future.

Just to put it in perspective so everyone know what you are getting into... From Petaling Jaya to Ipoh is ~200km For uncle to recharge and drink kopi for 30mins while waiting for his EV to recharge. If you drove a normal ICE car and is driving at legal speed limit of 110km/hr, you would have travelled 55km by the time they step into the car and move off. or you can say you already completed 27% or about 1/3 of the journey Realistically? most malaysians would drive at higher speeds, probably more like 65-70km or 35% of the trip already

Will it break down easily. What are the engine parts ? How long can the battery lasts. ? And the warranty for the battery is how long ?

It has all thr parts of what a notmal vehicle, but electric motors instead of an engine. Has less moving parts and carries a bank of batteries to provide power.

Most people still treat or think EV like normal ICE car. They think that we need to go to charging station everytime to charge EV. Actually, EV user just charge at home overnight like smartphone and its not everyday to charge. Daily use for work should be no issue. Range anxiety only come when we go for long distance such as outstation or balik kampung. But this should be tackled by end of next year since now there are many company already start making move to install charging station at a strategic location.

Majar car manufacturers (VW, BMW, Merc Group) and Toyota have allocated more budget for ICE tech going.2024 onwards. They know EV is done for. And fyi, you may think that Toyota is into EV but all their EV platforms are from BYD. The end of EV is near but still far.
