Join us on an epic EV truck road trip! We challenge our electric vehicle to stand up to the same expectations of an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle, traversing 400 miles and conquering 5 mountain passes - and return! Will the charging network be enough, and can charging speeds get our F-150 Lightning across a Canadian province and back again in 24 hours?
We're Trucked Up EVs, the go-to channel for all things EV trucks. If you're as passionate about electric trucks as we are, or just curious about the future of transportation, make sure to hit that subscribe button! 👍
In this video, we'll show you that EV trucks are not just a concept, but a reality that's here to revolutionize the way we travel. From the challenging mountain roads and less thn perfect charging stations, to the nail-biting suspense of whether we'll make it back, this is a ride you don't want to miss!
So buckle up, hit like, and let's get this journey started! And don't forget to share your thoughts in the comments below. We love hearing from our community of EV enthusiasts!
Are EV Charging Locations, EV Charging Stations, EV Charging Speeds, and EV Truck Charging Capabilities huge problems to EV Truck Adoption? Cybertruck technically has the highest charging speeds. The Rivian R1T Charging Speeds come in second, and the Ford F-150 Lightning comes in third. However, the Chevy Silverado EV, when it arrives to consumers, promises an even higher charging speed. Will any of it matter if the Charging Infrastructure isn't there?

This trip was intended to put to rest the worry about EV infrastructure. What it did reveal is that the speed of those systems needs to be faster to make long trips closer to the length of those taken with ICE vehicles. What has been your experience? Are you running into the same issues, or something else. Let me know in the comments below!

This is the review I’ve been looking for !! I live in Vancouver and am taking a trip to Osoyoos. My truck has the standard battery too and I had some concerns about the trip. I have a few questions How much range do you think you lost because your trip was in the winter ? And how many stops do you think I will have do to charge . And lastly, how much does the battery get back coming down the mountains? Thanks for the video. I feel a lot more confident after watching.

I am so sorry for missing this comment! I lost about 30% of my range from the winter, I estimated, including all the heat pumping, etc.. It's not 50% as some would have you think. From Vancouver, I stopped in Hope at the 200KW Chevron fast chargers in Hope (was 100% free at the time!), then Princeton for a top-up after the pass. That was it. As far as going down, I left my truck in one pedal driving, but I find now that I even get more range back with it turned off going downhill. I drove about 30km from the top of Hope-Princeton into Princeton without the mileage dropping, basically gaining about 20~30% of what I lost going up. I hope this helps ease some of the driving anxiety. I've done the trip from the Kootenays to Van and back several times, and have never had a single issue. There's always a fast charger if you need one. Thanks for being patient with me!

Waiting for end of video comparing the total drive time. EV 4000 stops VS ⛽️ 1 stop
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 5 месяцев назад
I stopped four times each way. Each stop was for about for 20 minutes. One stop was for 40 minutes because the charger was free and I had lunch. I paid a total of $26 to drive over 1300 kms, due to the available free chargers. Yes, you're right. Your advice would have been useful in the video. Good feedback!

I indicated the drive time at the end. Actual drive time was a little over 18 hours, but 3.5~4 hours would be required total for stops. I estimate about 3 times longer than I would have done in a gas vehicle. For such long trips, almost everyone stops for lunch/dinner, so that stop time can juice you up form 10% ~100% if you're at a DC fast charger that's a minimum of 150kw, which lowers the overall time.

Does Chevron still have free chargers in July 2024?
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 15 дней назад
Nope. The sneaky buggers swapped it to pay-only about two months ago. They are a little cheaper than Tesla but if I had my NACS adapter, I'd likely still go to a Super Charger, being that the Chevron ones can slow down as more users utilize them during the day (unlike Tesla's, they have an internal battery that drains down and has to be filled back up as they are used - dumb system). Hope this helps. Thanks for the comment!

v4 Tesla supercharger are the ones that are designed for 350 kW for which the Cybertruck will be the first Tesla that could utilize them once they turn on that feature.
@truckedupevs

Yes, The last time I looked, none are available in Canada. Not sure about the US?
@Scott-sm9nm
@Scott-sm9nm 6 месяцев назад
@@truckedupevs They have already popped up in Oregon, Nevada, Alabama, and Georgia. They are currently 250 kW. Not sure if it is just a software update for the next level of charging (350 kW - mentioned by Tesla engineers).
@SorinNicu
@SorinNicu 6 месяцев назад
The existing power network cannot support that level simultaneously on many trucks.
@Scott-sm9nm
@Scott-sm9nm 6 месяцев назад
@@SorinNicu unclear what you mean. Tesla is installing some superchargers with 12 or 16 or more stalls that are 250 kW each where the utility company transformers are supporting those. That is 8 stalls at 350 kW [8.5=(12*250)/350]

Actually, no. This is old FUD that has been proven completely incorrect. It's like going back to 1905 and saying gasoline and diesel will never be adopted because there's nowhere to get fuel, or saying when the household cloths dryer was introduced that it would collapse the grid. @@SorinNicu

Phone chargers have the same speed problem... their advertised super-fast charging is actually used only for a few % of a fully discharged battery, not all the way to 100%. To protect the battery they cannot use the full rate all the way to the end. As for the "5 mountain passes" it is hilarious that you brag about that. Any truck can do that (especially a Diesel one), but with an EV is something to make an YT video about it. What you don't say is that, after that, a normal truck can be filled in 3 minutes and ready to go again. An EV is fully depleted and need hour and hours of charging. Uber to grocery store?
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 6 месяцев назад
The point is that people think evs can't do any of it, and they can - rather easily. And no, when I was done, I parked at home and woke to a full truck, for $6 of overnight charging cost, a LOT cheaper than filling a diesel. If I would have liked to have continued rather than sleep, I would have given it another 20-30 minutes at a fast charger and just kept right on driving. However, you make a great point. These are not replacing diesels anytime soon, but they're not the great risk and problem that many make them out to be. Thank you fro you comment!

@@truckedupevs That $6 is not including ant road taxes and is subsidized for residential use. For now you get by, but soon it will be taxed differently.
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 6 месяцев назад
Funny, no one seems to have taxed the hundreds of billions in oil and gas subsidies ove rthe years. Your road taxes today don't fund evs; they fund government bailouts and industry. I'll be paying less in the future - when the solar panels power my truck. @@SorinNicu

When will Tesla open up their chargers for the other vehicles? I thought that was coming sooner than later. Or did they just do that in certain cities?
@Scott-sm9nm

2023 some Tesla Superchargers have Magic Dock on them (built in CCS adapter tesla findus webpage lets you see their locations); 2024 all these manufacturers will use NACS -> CCS adapters; 2025 they can install the native NACS port in the vehicles.
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 6 месяцев назад
@Scott-sm9nm is correct. According to my Ford dealership, I should be able to get an adapter in March for the Lightning. In Canada, only one in Quebec & two in Ontario seem to have any Magic Docks. Zero for most of the country so far. US Magic Dock locations are up to about 40 the last time I checked. Still sparse, but maybe they won't need as many once the NACS/CCS option is widespread.
