And yes, I ran a few 730LD's (F02 and G12's) between 2014-2020, absolutely incredible efficiency. In 2022 I bought a used 2016 730d (G11) as part of a one tank challenge "London to Madrid", it arrived in Madrid with 160km left in the tank meaning it had a realistic range of around 1800km. Therefore, I could have driven to Sydney and back on a single tank!

In australia adventurous people carry two tanks of fuel and a couple of jerry cans, how will EV's ever match that.?

Pretty sure that's what the horse man said when the Automobile arrived. EV tech is just at it's infancy compared to 100 yrs of ICE development. 1000km EVs already exist. battery swap is a thing, just google up NIO. wouldn't be surprised with-in a decade 2000km EVs with solid-state batteries gets released.

@@davec110 You going to swap a battery on fraser island? What about cape york? People dont carry jerry cans around in the city with access to hoists, they carry them out in the bush and places where they won't encounter petrol stations for ages. Sign me up for a 2000km range solid state battery, while you're at it I'll also take a fusion reactor for home to charge it.

The ICE vs EV road trip I'm waiting for is a "realistic" interstate family trip... Just to see how big the gap is currently. Get a pair of 7 seat SUV loaded with the weight of a family and luggage mid Summer. Start from a residential location in a suburban city region, drive between cities (like Melb to Syd or Bris to Syd, etc.) to an interstate residential location that doesn't have EV infrastructure and is 20+ minutes from a public charger (Feel free to run an extension cord from a residential 10amp socket in the house) then drive back the next day. (Bonus points for towing a small trailer) I'm all for electric (the 2nd car will be electric when the current one dies) but, as someone who has to do trips like that, I fear it will be a very long time before that trip is fun in an EV. I leave early (everyone sleeps), 20 min stop mid way for breakfast and fuel, then make it to my destination before the kids get too shitty (return is leaving afternoon at getting in at midnight). As is, the electric trip planners/calculators say this trip adds 3 hours. However, that's still not accounting for weight and aircon, etc. and only just has me getting to each charger (for the return trip it's expecting me to load the car, driving half an hour, then wait 50min to keep going.. kids will love that). Variable is charging at someone's house. If I charge from a residential plug at my destination I'm only getting 2.4kw/h (better than nothing) but I may need that to do local area driving (and I may get a chance to charge in other ways). Also, one Inland trip I do occasionally simply isn't possible. (Even just driving the Newell hwy is difficult/impossible)

Have replaced both diesel cars with Electric, 1 long range and 1 standard. Been to Adelaide, Sydney Canberra & Melbourne regularly no issues. Premium price equals $16,000 saving every year. And l tow a trailer …. Cheers

I would need a lot more data. I've always found people blindside themselves with a true view. My bias is to look at things from a person with just enough money to buy things. I have a diesel car already. If I had $100,000 cash I take into account that buying an EV means I no longer get 5% interest on my cash. That loss needs to be factored in.. Cost of home type2 charging station . Etc etc

We have a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe and it is a good compromise between short distance economy and long distance range. We bought it because it came with $7500 in tax credits and has 375hp/470 lb ft of torque. Even so it is just a toy. For towing we have a diesel F450 ordered and the wife drives a V8 Toyota Prado (Lexus GX 460).

Hey car expert, love the podcast, love listening to it in my Pajero while driving. 2 questions for you 1. Are there any plans to go to car meets to connect with the community more and interview the enthusiasts who put time and effort in their cars? 2. Since we are all getting all the amazing details and information of new cars, can their be a segment of the show talking about and or your thoughts on some old classics sports cars like the JDM, EDM and more? Thanks and keep up the awesome work, love you guys❤

Great follow-up on the electric car debate. I think the point you've raised regarding the ease of payment is a big issue. Those who might charge at home most of the time don't want to have to have 3 accounts with different providers for their annual road trip. Why can't one just swipe a credit card as one does when filling up at a conventional service station. Reliability of the chargers is also a big issue. I've got an EX30 or order for the wife who rarely travels beyond our immediate region. However at this stage I can't imagine replacing our main car, currently a P400 Defender with a BEV at this stage as when I travel long distances time is of the essence.

Basically, the time charging the the EV is the same as the cell phone if every fuel station has it. Otherwise better off go for a hybrid vehicle less headaches and worries during a trip.

Went for family trip to beach on Boxing Day and a major BP station on the highway were we stopped had cars lined up to fill up with petrol or diesel. We are talking a big station with a dozen pumps and cars are still waiting. How is that ever gonna work with EVs and a 40min charge time?

At the end of the day if you want to roadtrip in an EV at all in Australia atm, buy a Tesla. Seriously so much less F'ing around than every other brand, especially handy for older or new EV owners. Tell it where you want to go, it works out your route, tells you how much charge you will arrive with at each charger, how many stalls are taken, and just plug in and go no apps no tapping credit cards so on and so forth. Still so many more chargers needed however.
@johnlambert1744
@johnlambert1744 6 месяцев назад
Agreed! Tesla still needs to install a lot more superchargers in regional areas, particularly in Queensland. You still cannot drive a Tesla (RWD models anyway) from Brisbane to Rockhampton (and even further north) without having to use the slow 50kWh Chargefox chargers, which are often either in use or out of action.

There has been a lot of development effort put into electronic traction control systems for four wheels drives (and motor bikes and cars), Toyota possibly having the best systems currently, but they are nowhere near good enough yet to compete with full lockers (front, rear and centre). If a vehicle with full lockers only has traction on one wheel then all the power goes through that wheel. But at the same time the other three wheels turn at the same speed as the ground and so more likely to regain traction whenever available. An exception to this is in tight turns where independent drive might one day have an advantage, or performing tricky maneuvers like Mercedes demonstrated with the tank turns. This inherent capability can also be its weakness if not used correctly because all that power through one wheel can break CV joints.

Hi all, just like to point out I didn't make any stupid comments on any of your platforms, I listened and watched the whole video and understood the test. Standardized easily swappable batteries must be made before I jump on board electrified personal vehicles, I cannot stand fixed batteries in vehicles, it's such a limiting, erroneous design flaw.

I thought your EV-ICE test with the two 7 series was very balanced and valid. Very apples fir apples. Confirms my view that EV cars are better suited to city commuting and wife's shopping and kid transport needs. However ICE is still king of the 1000 km city to city trips. Specially considering the higher capital cost of EVs in the first place as well as their huge manufacturing carbon deficit compared to ICE cars. ICE cars are actually at their fuel economy best on long high speed trips. EVs are so much more efficient in cities.

Hi guys, One thing that every one is forgetting EV's have no tax just now and a petrol car is paying 50c a litre in tax. Remove that 50c a litre and a petrol car is in front by heaps!! I was thinking of a BYD Seal for my next car but Australia is just not ready yet for EV's if every one plugged in at home the grid would go down.
@johnlambert1744
@johnlambert1744 6 месяцев назад
You will find a lot of EV owners have solar at home (or at their workplace) so the issue of "bringing the grid down" isn't an issue. They don't draw that much power anyway. And why would the Government remove the fuel tax? I can't see that ever happening.
@pb1260
@pb1260 6 месяцев назад
@@johnlambert1744 I have solar but it doesn't work at night? My point about the petrol tax was EVs still have to be taxed and will be at around 3.5c a km which would have added another $27 to that trip petrol still wins. I was really looking at an EV but i drive 800km a week and that 3.5c a km would not make it worth it even with charging at home. And with bringing the grid down you missed my point not just one car but if 1 suburb had say 1000 evs and A/C running i bet it would fail. Look at Gold Coast last night grid went down just with people using A/C because of the heat.

@johnlambert1744
@johnlambert1744 6 месяцев назад
Agreed ICE is better for longer drives (as proven in the video) BUT it's still achievable and not overly inconvenient in an EV. The advantage of road trips in an EV is it kinda forces you to take regular breaks, which is what you should be doing anyway in ANY car you drive for fatigue reasons. Sure some ppl just want to drive and get to their destination as quickly as possible (I'm one of them and I own an EV) but you can't completely discount EVs as an option for long road trips.

@CarExpert on every EV review can you make sure the towing capacity is stated (or state if it can't tow), this information is missing from most EV's Like many houses around Australia I have a small trailer that I need to tow occasionally 1-2 times a month, but can't find an EV hatchback that can tow it like my current hatchback can, I have no need for an enormous vehicle nor the space to park one so Tesla Model 3 and similar or larger vehicles are out for me.

The test proved the obvious. EVs are a great inner city option and we need to prioritise small cars. Rural, long distance and heavy haul remains better suited for ice. Oh, and we need nuclear power for base load else all these cars are driving on coal.

@@Nic_B It depends - the BMW system primarily acts as a torque boost when the vehicle’s peak torque has been reached. It can provide an additional 200Nm of torque briefly at full throttle. At low speeds it can also shut the vehicle down as it coasts to a set of traffic lights and seamlessly restart the vehicle using the 48V system. It’s not a series hybrid system like a Camry where it can shut the engine down while the vehicle is moving at pace. In a situation like constant highway driving it doesn’t do anything to help efficiency. If anything it’s less efficient due to the added weight of the system.

How much to replace the battery in each one? 😂 Lithium battery EV’s are dangerous, extremely expensive, have awful depreciation, high insurance and repair costs, poor quality control, and aren’t in the slightest “environmentally friendly”. They are embarrassingly bad and I’m glad people are finally waking up to this virtue signalling wank. Sales are plummeting and rightly so.

The EV test was skewed. You have the most inefficent EV's made by an EV manufacturer that does not make there EV to compete but to flater ther existing assembly lines. Anyone that ownes an EV knows that this was a silly test and no one would buy a BMW EV unless they love the badge. There is only one EV charger that is reliable and fast that is Tesla. There are too many agendas in Australia trying there best to slow down EV's. The real answer is we are way behind in Australia in our knowledge of EV's and how to use them and charge them. The general public will only be misinformed for so long and if anything will work it out and abandon the misinformant agenda setters. Hopefully regional areas will get more support for EV charging but they wont if it is dismissed as it has been for years now in Australia.
