I went to elementary school with her. She was a painter too! She was so nice to me when others weren't. Beautiful soul. She played her guitar and sang in our music class.
Also keep in mind this is a live performance. No studio tricks here. And her guitar playing is just as elegant as her voice. Best rendition of this song hand down.
Have you not heard "Autumn Leaves" from the same evening as this video of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"? It's a somewhat similar vibe to SOtR, but more haunting I think. Here's the link, if I'm able to share it - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xXBNlApwh0c.html
Her vocal range was incredible. She's hitting all the low, mid, and high notes perfectly. And to see someone fingerpick and sing like that is extremely difficult except for the most gifted. Sad that she's no longer with us. What a talent!!!!!
Congrats! you finally listened to Eva. Unless you want to turn into a puddle, don't listen to "Autumn Leaves" or "Fields of Gold" or "Time after Time" or God forbid "I Knoy You by Heart"! She was in my opinion the greatest cover artist of all time.
I think she may have been the greatest female singer ever. And I've been listening to all kinds of music deeply for about 65 years or more. She was the best I've ever heard.
I have followed Eva Cassidy for 10 years and continue to play her music. What gets me about this version is that she didn't know yet that she was dying and yet the tone and the mood she sets seems to indicate that she did know. One word to describe the performance.... Haunting!
I first heard Eva Cassidy’s gorgeous voice in 2002 when Michelle Kwan skated to “Fields of Gold” in the exhibitions, after coming in third to Sarah Hughes. It was especially emotional because Michelle was “supposed” to win and she shed tears as she performed. I’ve been a huge fan of Eva’s music since then.
@@beedeegee9374I remember that skating competition. I'm dating myself lol. I was introduced to Eva when visiting a cousin in New York probably 10 to 20 years ago. The most beautiful voice I ever heard. I have listened to her since when I get the chance. Interestingly, one of my other favorite female vocalists is Angelina Jordan. Angelina is seventeen now and I have been following her for 5 years. Within the past year or two there was a fan made virtual Duo mashup published of Eva and Angelina singing Fields of Gold together! They each have their own voices but it's beautiful.
When you grow up with a song you think no one, no one can do it better, but Ms Cassidy just blew that out of the water! This was incredibly beautiful! Thank you for sharing and for letting this touch all our hearts. ❤
It is amazing to know that there are still people like yourself who are just now discovering Eva. And I hope you will continue to investigate and enjoy this incredibly gifted woman who left us far too soon.
I, too, am new to finding Eva. I'm so very glad that I have. What a magical talent she had! Sadly, many of the most talented seem to leave this world too soon. 💔 RIP Eva.
Eva also sings a verion of Sting's Fields of Gold that is unbelievable! Sting was quoted as saying it was her song now. Oh... and a version of Christie McVie's Songbird ...such a gifted person.
yes, because like Karen Carpenter, she was a VOCALIST, not just a singer, or a great singer, and Like Karen, she was a ULTIMATE storyteller and sang to US NOT at us and knew her talent was to tell the story of a song....
This performance affected me in the same way! Beautiful, emotional, amazing!! - Eva absolutely made this song appear to be totally different to the original version, as fantastic as that was, this is off the scale!
Judy Garland's version was from a young girl's heart. This is from a woman's heart that has taken some punches. I read a quote from either a relative or friend of hers saying that as tragic as her loss was, in a way, it was perfect that she became an international star after her death. Because she would not have enjoyed the trappings of stardom -- the attention, demands, interviews etc. This way, it was about the music and sharing her gift with the world. Btw, she was also a very talented artist. I think you can still buy some of her drawings and paintings.
Judy Garland, Katherine McPhee, and a few others. But hands down. Eva Cassidy is the most beautiful song I have ever heard!!🙏🏻🙏🏻😪😪RIP Eva.where your voice came from, you are now with it in Gods Kingdom!!❤️
I'm so glad you have finally heard this version. Eva Cassidy has so many fantastic songs. Her spin on the songs is so unique. Some other greats are: Autumn Leaves, Fields of Gold, Time After Time, & Oh Danny Boy. I highly recommend these - all of them. Lol!
She is angelic. I'm tearing up and I've heard her several times! Thanks, Sebs. To answer your question Christ is perfect love. The scripture says, "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus."
Never heard this before, it was incredible. For the record, no you didn't look like an idiot, and from my heart, condolences for the loss of your brother and prayers for your other brother.
What is so ironic is that Eva had a cold when she recorded (two nights) at Blues Alley. She hated her vocals, and didn't want any of the recording to be kept. Thank God she didn't get her way. Also, one night of the recordings were almost lost, due to a glitch. They have only recently been recovered due to advances in technology. Thank God for that, too.
In the ‘90’s, she went to meet executives from a big label recording company who were wanting to sign her, but they wanted to control her style and choice of music in order to promote her for their label. She couldn’t, wouldn’t do it, and walked away. I regularly listen to EC. Thankful for her family who have kept her music before us all these years.
Wonderful reaction Sebs. You've always impressed me with your heartfelt thoughts and your spirituality. Yes, in today's world that's being controlled by dark forces bent on taking us all down, we need love more than ever. And Eva's angel-like voice seems to open everyone's heart who listens to her. Thanks for what you do Sebs, it's very much appreciated.
Love Eva!..She was special..She never fail's to bring a tear to my eye..Now I'll give you another version of OTR, only this time it's Guitarist Tommy Emmanuel, playing it for the late Les Paul, which was his favorite song..Like this, it'll blow you away.. Absolutely stunning!
Hey man, you don't have to worry. It takes a real man to be moved by this song. People forget that men can be emotional too. It means that you are sensertive and compassionate. And men can be strong too. That is our strength and our weakness. Even men cry sometimes. Good on you. Beutiful song.
Just lost my brother to cancer a few months ago and it is still unreal to me. It's crazy that she had a cold when she did this song and yet she was still so amazing.
I was wondering when you'd discover Eva. All her songs are great. You won't miss reacting to any of them. Some of my favorites are: Time After Time, Stormy Monday, Nightbird and Imagine. There are no duds in Eva's catalog.
That was such a beautiful rendition of this song. So sad that she is no longer with us. She died at only 33 years of age. I also love the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Sadly he also died young at 38 years of age. At least we have their music left as a legacy.
I also love Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s version. I’ve heard he did it in 1 take. He also did die at a young age. I guess I’m biased in saying I do like his version better. (Just my opinion) Because I’m from HI as he is and he’s Native Hawaiian. I’m also from HI, and every time I hear that song I cry, because I now live in OK and not in HI. All of my family is in HI, and the song makes me miss them immensely plus it reminds me of my grandpa. The song is to me like a warm hug like he used to give me all the time. This version is also immensely beautiful and so unique. I love how each artist can make 1 song their own by just playing an instrument differently or changing the tempo.
dagmar Lucy Thomas of the UK did a tribute to Eva by singing her version od OVER THE RAINBOW, most beautiful version ever by the BEST female singer out there...ever !!! Check her out !!!
25yo slovakian soprano patricia janeckova died of breast cancer on october 1st this year!! she too had a fantastic voice! check out her version of 'once upon a time in the west' when she was 12! also 'MEINE LIPPEN', 'ave maria' & 'pie jesu'!!!
I also prefer Israel’s version. I bought his songs and my husband and I love his singing. He brings tears to one’s eyes just because of the sheer beauty and passion coming through his renditions. He was so amazing. We’ve seen his videos on RU-vid and feel blest that we could experience his performances without going to a live concert.
I heard her rendition of “I Know You By Heart” shortly after my husband passed away. It brings me to tears every time I listen to it. I think “haunting” describes her singing well. We are so lucky that she recorded her cds before she died. ❤️😞
So sorry for your loss. "I know you by Heart" is one of the most touching and beautiful songs I've ever heard and I cry every time I hear it. Her singing was beyond compare...she was a true one of a kind treasure gone way too soon.
I'm an audiophile. And was a guitar player as well. I love vocals. The first time I ever cried while listening to a song it was Eva Cassidy singing. But not this song. It was Autumn leaves. Now maybe only a guitar player would realize this fact about Eva Cassidy. Her guitar playing ability, while she sang like this! That's amazing. She was in a category like nobody else I've ever heard. Check out Autumn Leaves. Take note, all these recordings were live! Unbelievable!
You can tell the respect she was given for this performance, because you could have heard a pin drop in that place, as there were no background noises or voices.
I have listened to Eva's music for several years. This song ALWAYS brings me to tears. Her whole repertoire of songs is just as good. Listen to her versions of Autumn Leaves and Fields of gold. I love Eva Cassidy.
She truly had the voice of an angel. Like you, I can't listen to any of her music without crying. Some tears of sadness at the loss of her young life, some provoked by the emotions she stirs in all of us just hearing her. RIP Eva. Our loss is Heaven's gain.
What sets Eva’s version apart is the way her vocal phrasing is so vastly different with unexpected pauses and twists. And it is not to impress but to keep us on our toes and have us really listen to her voice and the lyrics.
I was one of those listeners that heard it on Sir Terry Wogan's BBC2 radio show all those years ago. It became the most requested song in British Radio that year . I've bought everything of Eva's that has been released. One of the things that just mesmerizes me about her is that every note no matter if it's softly sung or a high note is crystal clear.
My favorite artist of all time after listening to Field of Gold on the way to a funeral. She never gave in to those who wanted her to do it their way, but she did it her way. She was just getting big when she died.
For me, Eva's version has an incredible sense of longing in it. That longing to find the happiness you're looking for, and hoping you'll find it someday.
I discovered her about 20 years ago and have all of her cds. About 2 weeks ago a new orchestral album was released. Her voice from other albums added to an orchestra. I cried through the whole video-GORGEOUS!
I absolutely love her version of this song. For me, the reason why this hits different than other version is the style she sang it in and hearing her singing about dreams coming true and knowing she died before a lot of her dreams were fulfilled.
I will never forget my absolute shock at hearing Eva Cassidy sing live at a small club in DC. The band I was seeing, whose name I can't remember, invited her to join them for a few songs. She graciously accepted. Time stood still. My jaw hit the floor. DC has had more than it's share of undercelebrated amazing musicians who died way too young.
Eva Cassidy is my favorite female singer I just adore her ! The cover for Stings (Police Singer) "Fields of Gold" is an amazing song as well ! Thanks Man i get emotional too when i hear this and iv'e heard it hundreds of times=)
I discovered Eva several years ago and was blown away by her talent. So grateful I was led to her and so sad that she left this earth so young. Never apologize for feeling. It takes a strong man to show emotion.
Perception is reality, and when we experience something outside of our reality, like watching a beautiful, talented, long gone girl singing something that obviously means a lot to her, our Perception is shifted, and our reality follows. You asked why, I hope this helps. And never apologize or feel like you look like an idiot for feeling so deep that it brings tears to your eyes. Life is short, don't waste any part of it shutting down what you feel, you will turn into someone you don't like very much. ❤
Heard her sing "Fields of Gold" by Sting and fell in love with her voice. Went out and bought 6 CD of her and never felt sorry I did it. Great musician. She did a performance two days before her death. That tells me she had an amazing love for music.
Man don't worry about crying, I can't remember how many times I've watched this and I still cry, the song was written by Harold Arlen, it was sung by Judy Garland, but it was owned by Eva Cassidy, totally raw talent, no studio gimmick's, just her and her guitar, amazing, RIP
An unusual and amazing aspect of this performance is that I never tire of it. I get tears in my eyes every time. This after a hundred listens. It continually surprises me with its' elegant nuance and her masterful use of dynamic range. When she hits the note on the second "Some-where" it is like electroshock therapy. After all the subtlety leading up to it, then there is suddenly that POWER! We feel It is her heart and soul that is crying out, and then she quickly returns back to her lower powered voice, which is just as beautiful. An astounding performance. It also astounds me how many musical people have not heard of Eva Cassidy. I only envy them, as their hearing her for the first time is still to come.
An extraordinary balladeer, with amazing talent for re-interpreting songs. To get an idea of the range of her talent, give a listen to Stormy Monday on the same album, Live at Blues Alley. Actually, there are no 'fillers' on that disc.
Yes it's so sad how Eva Cassidy died so young from melanoma (cancer). Absolutely beautiful rendition from Judy Garland who sang the song from the film 'Somewhere over the Rainbow'. Ofcourse the great Bruddah Iz sang this song, really beautiful too. He also died very young.
I'm sure it was a momentary mental lapse, but the film Judy Garland sang this song in was titled "The Wizard of Oz", not "Somewhere Over the Rainbow.". That is the title of the song, but not the movie.
Anything by Eva is pure joy to listen too. If you want to be more blown away, find her version of Blues In The Night! Autumn Leaves and Fields of Gold are also favorites of ours!
Fields of Gold. My fav. Michelle Kwan skated to this song and after Michelle won bronze instead of the gold medal in 2002 Olympics, her exhibition/ emotional skate along with Eva’s beautiful rendition of the song which was spot on bittersweet for Michelle. I tear up thinking of it.
I love Judy Garland, but Eva owns this song now. Such an angel. Such beauty, joy and sadness. She makes this grown man cry every time I watch this. If you don't tear up watching her, you don't have a soul. RIP Eva, the world is a lesser place without you in it.
Eva was the full package - a superb vocalist, a great guitarist and a fantastic arranger. It takes guts to take such an iconic song and make it your own. Her arrangement conveys the poignant yearning of the words so much more effectively than Judy Garland's performance in the film, in my opinion. Eva made every cover she did her own and, again in my opinion, made them better than the originals. A case in point is her cover of "Fields of Gold" which Sting said was better than his original. Also, in this recording she had a cold - SHE HAD A COLD!!! - and she was still able to make this masterpiece. She was one for the ages.
I also love her rendition of the Fleetwood Mac song (sung by Christine McVie) called "Songbird". It is fantastic. She also sings "Oh Danny Boy" and "Fields of Gold" (The Police). I am sorry to hear about your brother passing and now another brother getting cancer. I pray for him and all of the people who love him.
I have watched this countless times over the years and have never seen it without being brought to tears. The way she is singing it it’s like she wants to dare to believe that things can get better
She was also not in top form for this performance she had some sort of cold/flu that evening, but they'd scraped together just enough to record over two nights. The first night there were technical difficulties so this it - it was a one-time shot, and it had to happen that night. So, she produced this under non-ideal conditions. Eva also does a great version of Autumn Leaves and some wonderful bluesy / jazzy songs.
I didn't pay attention to hardly any new musical artists from 1990 until the pandemic began in 2020. I started watching music videos on RU-vid and learned of Angelina Jordan and later Eva Cassidy. The two of them are now at the top of my list of favorites, as incredible singer storytellers, conveying tremendous emotion. A fan put together a virtual duet with Eva and Angelina singing "Fields of Gold". Stunningly beautiful. RIP Eva.
@@wilburfinnigan2142 Lucy Thomas is awesome. The majority of people prefer clean singers and Lucy is among the very best. When you see the song title, you know what you will get from Lucy, her incredible tone and pitch. I enjoy listening to her from time to time but I can listen to Angelina all day long and be surprised with her choices for each song. Simply a matter of personal preference.
I lost my ex-husband 2 years ago next month It doesn't feel like he's gone and it's hard To learn to cope when you're grieving , the loss of a loved one that has died of cancer because it's something that we can't stop. I think that is one of the biggest reasons why you reacted the way you did because I felt the same way. I have also had cancerand my daughters. A terrified type of fear makes you want to live each day to its fullest and be grateful for every moment. You have with the people all around you. And you can tell in this woman's voice as she sings. That she was not afraid , but she was brave .God bless her soul 🙏
@@shannonbaillie3244 Thanks for sharing and I am so sorry for your loss. Wishing you and your daughters good health. I highly recommend listening to Angelina Jordan's "Million Miles" which she wrote at age 13 after her grandfather passed. She is 18 now and I am going to see her in concert in Las Vegas on Feb. 29.
Sebs, we all have our favorite artists but whoever hears this song by Eva, it will become one of the finest performances they will ever hear in their lifetime The artist I love is Angelina Jordan, and, guess what? Someone put together a mashup of Eva and Angelina singing 'Fields of Gold'. Definitely something you should listen to. Eva and Angelina? It doesn't get any better than that.
Sebs, this 80 year old GG mother, thinks you are a man i would love to have met in my younger days. Anyone who cries or has shivers at her sing, has a pure open soul honey, so be glad, and every time you need to cleanse yourself, play her songs. This is the first time I have heard of her, so thank you hugs honey
