I have probably watched 20 or so videos on this topic. There is a lot of misinformation on RU-vid about this procedure, but your video seems to have all the correct steps in one easy to watch place. With this, as well as the supplementary information in the comments, I think this is the most comprehensive guide for automotive AC refrigerant recovery I have seen!
Very good video. Just a few things I noticed.. only recover from low side, if you recover from high side you will remove oil. If tank is new it must be vacuumed out. Last but not least don't use quick disconnect fittings... they just make a mess specially when there is dye in the system, it wastes refrigerant and hurts the environment.
Yes but the EPA considers it minimal. It considers the impact of unscrewing valves completely then rescrewing to have more potential for accidents like dropping the valves to release more refrigerant than QR. EPA states that both are minimal, just one more minimal than the other

Well from all the researh ive done i say you made 4 critical mistakes first you should of opened both valves on recovery tank if brand new to let the Nitrogen out that its shipped with. (Atmosphere is fine with nitro) second hooked a vacuum pump to the recovery tank and let that baby rip for about 30-60min to make sure its sucked of everything you can get. Think of it as you're the tank and best BJ ever didnt miss a drop. 😉 Next purge the hoses open valves up on manifold and recovery machine leave valve on tank closed then crack open the hose to tank fitting until you get refrigerent out then tight immediately. Finally only open the low side! Leave high side shut
Very important thing that was not mentioned. Every vehicle have its own refrigerant capacity. And it is very important to fill your system with exactly right amount of refrigerant for your vehicle. That the AC will work perfectly.
Refrigerant recovery Google search near you should answer that. They make sure there’s no contamination (biggest one is non-mixable refrigerants), then put it back in a can that only has recovered (think recycled) refrigerant of the same type
@@VWtech562 ok. I need explanation on this ??? What makes something like the Robin air 34788 machine different than what this guy has. Filters? And a vacuum pump I know. It just seems like I can reuse the freon. I use a filter when collecting and a filter when recharge so far so good
@@mrpaulvoline1978 I'm on the same Page as you are. I've asked myself the same question. I use a Robinair roll around machine at work and all I do is replace the filter after 150 hrs. But how good that filter works when recovering refrigerant on burned-out compressors? In my opinion you would also need a refrigerant identifier to make sure there is no air or contaminated refrigerant before putting it back in.
In a practical sense, yes. But part of taking it to a recovery center is them making sure only the correct refrigerant is there. If not, they separate it. Should you have a machine that analyzes it and you know it’s good. I don’t know of a reason why you can’t do that. Except that maybe you need to have a certain certification to say it’s properly recovered? Not sure
Hey thanks for a very informative video! Question, do you know where the oil goes from the system when the machine recovers it? I used to work at a shop and our full size machine separated it into a separate canister. Does this one do that or does it send the oil into the recovery tank?
So I just got my certificate so I’m gonna basically give you the textbook answer since I don’t have much experience quite yet. (More or less saying I have done this for 30 seconds and beyond the certification material I have no idea what I’m doing) Some of the oil will dissolve in the refrigerant. But most should stay in the compressor. The stuff that dissolves in the refrigerant could pool in the bottom of the recovery cylinder. There’s several hvac channels on RU-vid that show cut open recovery cylinders and a few have shown how much compressor oil pools in the bottom where the dip tube doesn’t reach. Interesting stuff if you’re a nerd like me that like looking up stuff like that.
I don't understand..you recover R134A into the tank, and why don't you use the same tank, R134A, to charge the System? I see you using a 12oz two-can instead
