Thanks for the few minutes on this, Lindsay! I have to say, this was absolutely relevant to me, and I sheepishly admit that gouache is one of my mediums that I've had a small stash of forever but never use, and to see what you've done with it overall in recent months regardless of brand is inspiring me to give those tubes some love and use. Given what you've said here and having just rewatched that review too, I plan to order the Holbein magenta and cyan open stock (I have big tubes of black and white already so it doesn't make sense to get any sets) and maybe a few more MG open stock colors TBD--you didn't talk about it directly, but I liked how you were able to bend that Permanent Green Light in different directions in the dense trees of your Craig Pond study as well as get some turquoise-y tones in your water with the rocks bending the cobalt despite saying you felt un-enjoyably limited. Would you consider a lesson with a rough re-creation of those rocks, sea and shore? I really like it!
it actually is very relevant to know how long the paints will stay fresh in the tube! i have a number of daniel smith watercolors that hardened in the tube, very disappointing
Since it’s watercolors then you can peel the tube open and put the dried chunk into a palette to rewet. But yeah, it’s never fun when a tub dries up. That happened to a few of my Academy and Cotman watercolors tubes too.
According to a livestream from Daniel Smith, they are releasing 30 or so new gouache colors in November, including cool blues! My favorite is Winsor & Newton Designer gouache!
I purchased the HIMI gouache when you recommended them and not only have I not used it, I haven’t even opened the “cups”. It’s on the long list of “I’m gonna” in my studio. I’ve caught a major case of the lazy’s that won’t set me free. I consistently write down ideas, but just have no gitte’up in me. 😭

Well mine has not been used yet and is about two years old. (MGraham). So good to know it will last. I finally bought a set of artify paint brushes just for my gouache! The white and yellow set of brushes. They work nice!
Thanks for the review. I still think you should try ShinGan as well. Would you do some sketchbook tours please? Even if you haven’t completed the sketchbook it would be awesome. I love it when you flip through your artwork. 🥰
Hullo Lindsay, I have a few legacy tubes of paint from watercolor and gouache to acrylics and water soluble oil paints! It is good to see a paint hold up for years if stored well! I used Turners Design Gouache for many paintings. The only brand that I have found problematical is the Windsor& Newton student grade paints. I have recently purchased some DaVinci gouache tubes just for fun, to tryout, and they are high quality paints! No surprise there, eh! Thank you for sharing this with us and I have seen you use a lot of different brands and I think most brands of professional quality paints are going to work well! I am NEVER going to buy a Dan Smith product again, but you have heard me rant about them before, I hope you and your family have been enjoying your vacation! Stay safe and be happy 😃
I have just the M Graham sap green gouache and really like it. It's just an ideal sap green. They're all pretty good, although the Holbein and W&N rewetting is hit or miss, depending on color. I never noticed any difference between the fancy gouache and the Himi until I spent a ton of time with the fancy and then the Himi seemed sticky and streaky. I think it does make a difference. But maybe not if it were a blind test. Who knows.
Hi Lindsay, I just wanted to make a comment after reading some posts by others on this video! I believe that you might buy some new M.Graham paint and review new paint perhaps even comparing it to the old and new paints!
i would like to see the filming of painting the big painting with the feather. I like the bocca background. Is there a video of the painting with martini, cigarette and sandwich? Finally, which brand did you find re wet best if you let it dry in the pallet?
