Im a brit. But I’m going start by saying I scored the second fight 115-113 in favour of Holyfield. Anybody who says the second fight wasn’t close or that Holyfield is delusional is talking bollocks. Now I believe Lennox won the first fight and to a degree I think they gave him the second to make up for the draw decision. I will also say that I respect Lennox and he one of the best. I will also say I respected Holyfield more as a fighter. His heart & spirit in a fight was second to none. I think Lennox felt he want loved like a Holyfield or Tyson and craved this from the fans. Holyfield for me is the more honest man all round.
@mmcneil777
@mmcneil777 4 года назад
I agree. I am an American but if a fighter has a fighting spirit a lot of times I’ll root for them even if they are not American. Lennox was a great fighter, but very cautious. He didn’t really endear himself to American fans mainly for that reason. He also came off as aloof and arrogant at times. Even if he had been a little more like Tyson Furry, he would have had a larger fan base. Holyfield always took risks and gave it his all. It caused him to a have a huge following. Again Lennox was a great fighter, but I think people like a fighter who is willing to take more risks like Evander. Lennox is more likeable now as a commentator. Even he had been more like he is now when he was a fighter he would have had a greater fan base. I actually liked him initially. But when he started making comments about Evander having kids out of wedlock, I didn’t like him that much for awhile. I like him more now and do believe he was a great fighter during his time.

Evander needed the knockout to "win" this fight, he knew it and everyone knew it. HBO (and the general public) was also pushing for Lewis v Tyson, But your right, A 37yo Holyfield beat a prime Lewis. Imagine what would of happened if Holyfield was anywhere near his best?

We'll have to agree to disagree i'm afraid, their first fight wasn't close, i gave Holyfield 3 rounds at the most, namely 3, 10 & 11., he raised his game & fought better in the rematch, scoring rounds 6, 7, 9 & 12 for Holyfield, he didn't do enough to secure victory in my opinion and Lewis despite not giving one of his stronger performances, did enough to win.

I loved how Holyfield was pure class and didn't stoop to the trash talk crap. He let his fighting do the talking. I really was lucky to grow up watching him in the Olympics and knew while watching him destroying guys in Los Angeles in 84 get screwed over and got the bronze instead of gold but he didn't bitch and moan and blame other people about it. He dealt with it and said ok now im going pro and gonna win a title. His 15 round war with Qawi in his 12th pro fight is probably the greatest championship fight of the 1980s. He lost 14 pounds during that war and almost died from dehydration afterwards. I remember watching that live on ABC when i was 12 and was going wow this guy is special and he's gonna win the heavyweight title someday. I knew he was gonna beat Mike Tyson back in 91. Too bad Mike hurt his ribs in training. That fight would have been 100 times better than their fight in 96. What could have been oh well it wss still great but seeing both tyson and Holyfield in their primes before Evander had his first loss and before Tyson went to prison would have been something very special. Who knows who would win but I would have bet on Holyfield. His heart and determination were unmatched.

I never understood why Lewis took so many personal swipes at Holyfield. Holyfield was such a classy and respectful fighter at the time, no one ever trashed talked him or anything. It was completely unprovoked and bizarre to be honest. When Lewis was still boxing, I respected how great of a fighter he was, but I couldn't stand his personality and how classless he could be. After beating down an opponent, he always had to beat them down more in the interview and give no respect. And he was even worse in his losses, he never could accept the loss and always made excuses. Watch the interview after he beat Tyson, Mike was talking and giving nothing but praise and respect to Lewis who just pounded him. Then Lewis starts to talk and can't resist to take some cheap shots at Tyson. Its like come on bro! You just beat the piss out of him, its over! Why do you need to take cheap shots at him in the interview after? I'll admit tho he has gotten much better with age and will actually praise his past opponents, not like before.

It's an Easy Decision; Holyfield should Hang 'em Up After Latest Ripoff By Wallace Matthews New York Post November 15, 1999 05:00am Lennox Lewis, three years younger, three inches taller, anywhere from 25 to 40 pounds heavier, has proven only that he wants no part of a real fight with Evander Holyfield but is perfectly willing to accept a gift from the judges, so long as he doesn’t get hurt too much in the process Holyfield deserved the decision over Lewis Saturday night. Instead, he got kicked to the curb, where a beat-up car was waiting to drive him away. Wonder if HBO will give similar treatment to rounds three and 12, both clearly won by Holyfield but scored for Lewis on the cards of Chuck Giampa and Billy Graham, an 83-year-old man who was up way past his bedtime. In truth, it doesn’t really matter. Holyfield should have won the fight and didn’t. Unmarked and happy, he made an appearance at a “victory party” thrown by Don King, then, at 4 a.m., he went out dancing with rapper LL Cool J

Justice Lands The Knockout Punch Daily Mail Jeff Powell Last Updated at 00:00 15 November 1999 AMERICA bent over backwards to be fair to Lennox Lewis here and it couldn't have happened to a nicer Englishman. The International Boxing Federation's last-minute refusal to approve this event caused a greater furore than the scorecards, even though the judging here performed a disservice to Evander Holyfield almost comparable to the injustice of which Lewis complained in New York eight months ago. America's generosity in giving Lewis the benefit of all the doubts and disputes of recent months was a gesture which set the good of the game above selfish interest The scoring here smacked of compensation to Lewis for the drawn scorecards in New York. But it weighed on the scales of justice in the rematch. Lewis was a denial of Holyfield's heroic revival of will and physique at the age of 37. I was by no means alone at ringside in making Holyfield the winner. Anyone less committed to the cause - be it personal or patriotic for a man of Jamaican origin, English birth and Canadian upbringing - would have wilted before Holyfield's onslaught in the middle of the fight. Lewis wobbled as alarmingly as the heavier drinkers among his three to four thousand English supporters in the 19,000-capacity Thomas and Mack Centre, but somehow stayed upright and in contention. The wound, or the manner of its infliction, affected Lewis's concentration and after losing the sixth he was in serious trouble in the next as Holyfield connected with a short left hook followed by damaging combinations. Lewis reeled but survived to stage a gallant rally at the end, which made the seventh far and away the best of the 24 rounds they have shared in their two encounters. It is these introspective spells of inaction which leave many Americans dissatisfied, his trainer Emanuel Steward included. What does need to be recorded is Holyfield's phenomenal capacity for reinventing himself every time his career looks finished. The old man of New York came close to another of his miracles. Then, having been denied, the born-again Holy-field said: 'While I can't say was happy with the scoring, when you leave it in the hands of the judges you have to live with their decision.

Holyfield is one of the greatest ALL-TIME pound for pound fighters. Not just the 80s or 90s. He fought a HOF fighter to win a title in his 12th pro fight, and was 2-time fighter of the year in the 90s, and once in the 80s, and as a heavyweight consistently fought guys who outweighed him by 20-40lbs. Also compare the W-L records of his opponents compared to his rivals...and finally, had he retired when he should have, (after destroying Moorer in 1997), he would have had beaten every fighter he ever faced. Total all-time stud.

Then in the 8th they were both on even terms but Holy nailed him again and could have put him down but he's just lost a couple steps. I had Holy barely winning the second one but they gave it to Lewis because of the horrible first decision. Both guys were great and the only fighter to go 12 rounds twice and not get knocked down. Toughest fight for both guys.

@Your Neighbor Evander did win that second fight, and if Evander had fought that first fight against Lewis the way he did in that rematch then it wouldn't have been no if ands or buts about it...

@Your Neighbor You're right because l rewatch that fight day before yesterday again simply because l haven't seen it in ages and yes, Lennox Lewis beat Evander Holyfeild in that rematch but Holyfeild fought a much better fight, l agree Holyfeild lost both fights legitimately...

Lennox Lewis vs Evander Holyfield II Replay - HBO World Championship Boxing November 20, 1999 George Foreman (HBO Commentator) Lennox Lewis (HBO Contracted Fighter) Evander Holyfield (Showtime Contracted Fighter) HBO Broadcast56:34 - George Foreman - You just hope the judges are not swayed by the previous fight just score this fight the way it was tonight and forget about the past56:43 - Jim Lampley - Do you have a winner in your head George?56:50 - George Foreman - Holyfield did a lot better, if not for the stigma of the first fight, I think there wouldn't be any question that he (Holyfield) could have pulled this off56:57 - Jim Lampley - You think that Holyfield won the fight George?57:00 - George Foreman - If had not been for the original thing More than his jobs worth to say anymore (HBO wanted and spent money hyping Lewis vs Tyson rather than Holyfield vs Tyson 3) A washed-up 38 year old Holyfield did this to Lewis. Boxing; Lennox Goes Potty Over Trainer Stew; Manny's mouth sparks big fight row Sport Dillon, John The Mirror (London, England) Mar 14, 2000 LENNOX LEWIS has had a bust-up with trainer Emanuel Steward just as he begins preparations for his first fight as undisputed world heavyweight champion. Lewis was infuriated by reports that Steward claimed Evander Holyfield should have won their historic, second clash last November. Lewis' promoter Panos Eliades was forced to step in and act as peacemaker. It is the latest twist in a relationship which has sometimes been rocky, although Steward will continue to train Lewis for his clash with Michael Grant in New York on April 29. Eliades said: "Lennox was very upset when he heard about what had been reported, but things are okay now.

Holyfield is so egotistical and arrogant, he thought he beat John Ruiz as well when everyone knows he lost & he can't accept that Lennox Lewis beat him. Holyfield was a great fighter but his opinion on certain fights are well off the mark.

I'm affraid he's delusional if he thinks he won the 2nd fight. Lewis was robbed in the first fight. In the 2nd fight Holyfield did better but not nearly enough to get the win. Lewis won most of the early rounds with the jab. Holyfield got into the fight in the middle rounds and even hurt Lewis in the 7th but towards the end of the round Lewis was forcing him back. Evander faded in the following rounds as Lewis landed some heavy body shots and uppercuts. Evander pulled out a good 12th round but the punch stats are pretty clear in Lewis's favour. Evander was a warrior but he just didn't win anywhere near enough rounds to justify a decision. His version of how he got the WBA belt is also rather disingenuous as Lewis didn't want to give that belt up, it was Don Kings trickery that forced that situation. Anyone who remembers the opinions of fighters in this period knows that Grant, who Lewis defended against next was recognized as a far bigger fight and threat than John Ruiz at the time. So for Evander to imply that Lewis was somehow didn't fancy a fight against Ruiz is a bit much. You have to rate Holyfield in nany ways but he's not the most trustworthy and honest in all respects. In some ways very noble and gentlemanly but his steriod use( which is pretty evidential, revelations regarding Evan Fields and his obvious juiced physical appearance) and his headbutting and occassional denial of the obvious does cast some doubt as to certain aspects of his character.

Typical Holyfield, he can't accept that Lewis beat him fair and square, makes excuses for their first fight and calls robbery for the second. Holyfield was a great fighter no doubt but he did not beat Lennox Lewis, Holyfield lost both fights in my opinion and the rematch although closer, was not enough to secure victory.
@isabellamcloughlan6082

I thought Lewis won both fights, funny how Holyfield refers to the second Lewis fight as a bad decision, no decision is as bad as his first fight with Ruiz, a bout in which Holyfield clearly lost yet was gifted the decision.
