How smart Holyfield plays this after Moorer got away with the first knockdown. No rush, just clever and precise shots to the head after moving away Moorers defense.
His former trainer Teddy Atlas said in response to everyone saying what you said after the fight, "If he was so determined, why didn't he show that level of determination and discipline before the fight, during training, instead of coming in 10lbs overweight for one of the biggest and most important fights of his career?" I'm not saying you're wrong at all, I actually think both can be true, but Moorer's lack of dedication in training is mostly what caused the split between them.
I remember this Fight. You gotta Respect Michael Moorer's Heart. Being knocked down 5 Times and getting back up everytime, not too many Boxers can say they've done that.
Joe frazier was knocked down 6 times in 2 rounds against Big George foreman. Holyfield and Moorer both had a go at big george as well. All of them legends of the sport
Whats crazy to think is how many absolute WARS Evander had been in by this point. Moorer (who I respect) was never the same after getting in one "war" with Big George. Evander had brawled with Qawi, Cooper, Foreman, Bowe X 3 etc. Guy was a true gladiator. And in the first fight Moorer almost lost to him fighting with Holy only using one arm from that injury. Guy was a pure pit bull in the ring
@@scott1713 that's true, gave holyfield his second loss, both good fighters, I like both of them, Michael moorer deserves more recognition, he was a good boxer
Evander was the ultimate overchiever and make no mistake about it,he would have been the champ in any era...bare knuckle onwards and just a great all around fighter
He most definitely would you guys typing "no" must NOT KNOW BOXING simple. Holyfield wasn't overrated so people didn't know how great he was but he's simple up there with the best
The man could fight, could adjust and do it while being the lighter of the two.The man answered any questions when put to task and he did it with spirit...any person that knocks him only wishes that had his fortitude
@boxing fan uk Of the recognized champions of the decade, Holyfield was the most memorable and accomplished of them all. Foreman had just one successful (and highly controversial) defense before abdicating the title. Despite beating Holyfield in one of the greatest heavyweight fights ever, Bowe had a short and undistinguished tenure as champ. Tyson began the decade losing to Buster Douglas and lost to Holyfield twice. Moorer unseated Holyfield in their first fight but then lost the belt to Big George in his first defense; as we can see above, he lost the rematch to Evander pretty decisively. And while it's true that Lewis was 1-0-1 against Holyfield, he didn't fight for the legitimate championship of the world until 1999 and didn't win the title until November of that year. I think what speaks most to Holyfield's standing as the best of his era was the fact that of all the fighters I listed above, most of them never fought one another; Evander fought and beat-or-drew with all of them at some point in the 90's. So no, I'm not kidding. I think it's pretty clear that he was the dominant heavyweight of that decade.
@boxing fan uk I think you would have a really tough time finding many fight fans who would agree with you that the fighters you listed here (Mason, Ruddock, Bruno, Akinwande, etc.) would in anyway compare or supersede the list of champions and top contenders that Holyfield beat during that same timespan. All excuses and rationalizing aside, Lennox remained on the periphery of the heavyweight division until his title shots against a declining Holyfield in 1999. The common denominator for Foreman, Tyson, Bowe, and Lewis is that they all fought Evander during that decade while never fighting each other. Lennox was definitely the best champion of his era...it's just that his era on top ended up being the early-to-mid 00's, something that is no less of a great accomplishment.
@boxing fan uk Forgive me friend, you've totally lost me with all the hypotheticals, decision-disputing, and 'What if?' scenarios. We don't have to engage in conjecture or speculation about what might've happened because Holyfield was the only heavyweight to fight and beat-or-draw with all the champions and top contenders of that decade (i.e. Douglas, Foreman, Bowe, Tyson, Moorer, Mercer, and Lewis). Those fights all happened and he did enough to become the recognized world champion on three occasions during that time frame. Acknowledging that Holyfield dominated that decade doesn't take anything away from the fact that Lewis was the top guy from late '99 to '03. In fact, diminishing Evander's credentials and standing only serve to tarnish Lennox's accomplishment when he eventually took the title from him. I really don't know any other way to sort this through so I guess we're just going to have agree to disagree. Take it easy and God bless you and your family during these crazy times.
Holyfield is the Greatest of All Time. Outstanding skill set, combinations were slick, footwork was amazing, stamina was insane, precise power combined with his unmatched HEART to fight and succeed, without ducking anybody... Any era in history, Evander would have been crowned CHAMPION! He is the BEST in my eyes!
@@kevinmunday5782 If we are assessing them all at their absolute best, the top 5 are: 1. Mike Tyson 2. Sonny Liston 3. Riddick Bowe 4. Larry Holmes 5. Wladimir Klitschko
Moore’s showed more Warrior Heart & Spirit in this loss & gained more HONOR & RESPECT in this fight than any win he ever had. This Michael Moorer refused to quit, showed he has a 1 of a king heart & will to fight than any other fight. This fight made Michael Moorer 1 of the GREAT HEAVYWEIGHTS in our time. 7 knockdowns & still wanted to fight & Dr had to plead with Moorer “that’s enough” “that’s enough” Moorer was willing to die in the ring. Mad RESPECT FOR MICHAEL MOORER
One Holyfield championship fight was like 8 Klitchko championship fights in comparable magnitude. It would be like Klitshiko fighting AJ almost every championship fight. Holyfileds fights were BIg and he always fought the best. He constantly fought fellow champions and ducked no one.
Yes. Holyfield didn't have many title defenses cause he fought the top guys. Thats why the number of title defenses is meaningless. Joe Lewis, Holmes and Klitchko have one thing in common in many of their title defenses. They fought bums. No disrespect to them as champions but they had 20 title defense for a reason
@@briancamilli8873 unlikely someone could beat klitschko when hes at physical peak rhe dude is absolutely.beast and look at he fought tiny dude chambers..... Lol only giy could beat him is lewis as wladimir is just too powerful esp the jabs
johannsebastienbach Klitchko couldn't beat anybody that could punch. There is a reason wladimir didn't fight his brother. Because Vitali who had the better chin would of beat his brother
Brian Camilli Holyfield was like Ali...he fought everyone...and in most cases they were fellow champions at or near there primes. They were both top guys in a golden era’s of the HW division. They both seemed to elevate their divisions...
Moorer simply refused to give up. The stamina he stood up with surprised me. I thought he will die after the last knockdown but no, he stood up and ready to fight on.
The fact that Moorer was getting dropped by punches that wouldn't have dropped him earlier in the fight meant he had a concussion and was very susceptible at that point. Even though he kept getting up he was in danger of permanent brain damage. It was a good stoppage.
Moorer is definitely a force to be recognized as a champion. Considering Moorer beat HolyField in their first match. I like HolyField to when over Moorer in their second match.
After seeing this, it's even more impressive how George Foreman managed to put Moorer on the floor long enough to not beat the count. Moorer really had heart.
They didn't conduct testing back then. Even if they did, EH could get in the contract to not test. Lee Hainey was on his team when he bulked up from 190 lbs to 208 in a year or so. Grown men don't gain 28 lbs of muscle in a year. Especially after he gained from 178 to 190-195 for his pro fights.
No problem with waiting for the judges who usually have a little surprise between them. EVANDER HOLYFIELD. THERE IS NO OTHER HEAVYWEIGHT THAT I KNOW OF THAT IS MORE OF A TRUE WARRIOR THAN YOU!
I'm a lifelong Holyfield fan, but I gotta say, Michael Moorer deserves a LOT more credit for the fighter that he was. Great jab, very good skills set, notable puncher, and underrated heart also. Once people look beyond the loss to Big George Foreman, they'll see that Michael Moorer really was something.
OMG holyfeild is such a great powerful boxer damn ... He is very composed and perfect in the ring with great heart of wining .. Holyfeild really schooled Moore in this Fight.
After watching the 1st fight where he beats Holyfield, and how many times he was knocked down in this fight but got back up again..I think shows what a big Achievement it was when Big George knocked out Moorer to become the oldest heavyweight champion ever!
Mike had pretty good stamina,he kept coming even after the field was putting him on the canvas.finally the doc stepped in to save him.the field a great fighter in his prime.
The best Heavyweight fight Real Deal had as far as being in his best shape was against Douglas. I never seen Holyfield look that crisp after, maybe against Tyson the first time.
Moorer got the better of Evander in the first fight through Holyfield's health issues at the time.A fully healed, motivated real deal proved he was too physical and determined for moorer, enhancing Evander's greatness further with his ability to get revenge over an exceptional fighter.
Moorer was definitely not exceptional. He ran up most of his wins and the majority of his wins as a light heavyweight. He didn't bring his power with him when he because a heavyweight.
Fk me Holyfield has to be one of the most exciting fighters ever. Maginficent physique and just beautiful combinations with the most perfect punching ive ever seen. Guy was a master in this fight.
5 knockdowns. Evander couldn't never truly hurt anyone . One of the all time greats tho. He had just enough power. I've just always believed he didn't have the big power needed to be in that division.
