For me I’ve tried both and the remo pinstripe just has more attack and sustain I get out of them compared to the evens EC2S. The Evans heads just have too much controlled sound. The remo heads just sound fatter to me, but that’s what I love about drumming. It’s all about what kind of sound you like for your kit and that’s what matters. Personal preference.

I've used both, and they are pretty similar. EC2 have slightly more highs and more sustain, and sometimes I'd use more muffling on the EC2s than the Pinstripes. The Pinstripes tended to be fat and splatty. At the time, I preferred pinstripes, although I prefer EC2s in this demo. They were on different kits though. I don't need as much muffling as I used to, so I could use either.

I prefer Remo but here I prefer the ec2’s. To me they sound more full here and resonant. The pin did sound good on the floor tom though but choked on the 10” to my ear but the Evans sounded consistent on each drum.

So, I used Remo heads for years and switched over to Evans 5 or so years ago. I really like my Evans heads. THAT SAID: the Remo PS sounded fuller with a purer tone to me. The Evans seemed to have a bit more attack. BTW, I found this video because I was trying to decide between putting one of these heads with a low tuning on a particular drum (I've actually have a PS on another set doing this job) I still have not decided but thanks for the excellent video! :^)

Listen Drummers I have found the ultimate tom duo, evans ec2s frosted for batter, with remo ambassador coated for reso, I know this is weird but omg 😲 😳, it made my pearl session sing like I've never heard before!!! The frosted ec2s are so musical, and resonate the note of the drum so well, the the warmth and low end of the ambassador or reso just tops off the drum, its incredible!

Interesting....WOW these sound similar. The single ply heads have a much more dramatic difference. If you're old and fat like me, you remember a time when Evans couldn't come CLOSE to REMO. That said, whatever is happening in the Remo manufacturing process, has made tuning/seating excruciating, even to this day. The head has to be seated, stretched, etc...before it finally settles in. That can be a few days or a week of playing. I can get Evans tuned up in seconds....literally. I was stunned the first time I experienced that. And, the consistency of that process is all over the place, because of Remo's complete lack of QC. They're (IMO) the best sounding head ONCE that happens. But, Jesus, what a pain. These days, the sound is close enough to where it's just not worth fighting the Remo issues, unless I'm recording. Outstanding video guys. You did something very difficult, in getting both sets of heads dialed in perfectly for this comparison. Well done.

It's really frustrating, but generally I have always defaulted to Remo coated ambassadors, but in the last few years I have had encountered a couple of dud ambassador heads. I also just got a pack online for 12,13 and 16 and initially the 12 was just not working. As a last ditch desperation, I tuned it as tight as I could and left it over night. The next day I took the head off, reseated it and it suddenly worked as it should. The only reason I persevere with the Remo's besides it being my favourite sound is that, every time I try Evans , I like them for a couple of days, but feel like the heads (particularly coated) are not as durable. They seem to go off quickly. There is also something about the sound that starts to annoy me as they play in, where as even if the coating wears off the contact point of an ambassador,to me they still sound good. I can make a set of ambassadors last for 4-5 years (on toms) and they do what I want them to.
@phillamoore157
@phillamoore157 Месяц назад
@@mancuniancandidatem Yup! I agree. I learned a LONG time ago, from an old pro to torque the Ambassadors down for 24hrs, and then play them aggressively for about a week to really get them seated and sounding their best. And, like I said, when recording, I’ll deal with it because I agree with you, they to this day still sound the best. But, for daily playing, I’m really enjoying the Evan’s. Btw…I think (don’t quote me on this) the UV1 series has a coating guarantee’s not to come off. I haven’t tried them yet, given I don’t really have that problem with the coating. But, I believe that’s the line with the guaranteed coating. And, as always, the kit makes a big difference. I bought a set of the Aquarian Modern Vintage that I’m really looking forward to trying out, as well. I heard a set of those on the same kit I’mp playing here on RU-vid (Yamaha Hybrid Maple) and they sounded absolutely incredible. 👍

The EC2 sound great! It seems to have more high end and clarity, while maintaining similar control. The PinStrip still sounds great though, and is still my personal choice. Probably because I've been using them for so long, and I tend to tension them a little looser to get more breath out of them, a little more "air".

Great video and sound comparison. Overall I did prefer the sound of the Remo Pinstripe. But maybe that's because my eyes took over a time 2:27 during the demo of the Evans EC2. The floor tom looked like it had a puddle of water sitting on it and my eyes kept seeing waves and ripples on that floor tom head.

If it's not a stupid question to ask.....let's say I want to go with the pinstripes as the batter heads on my 12"-13" 16"toms. Is there a prevailing wisdom as to what goes on the resonant side of those toms? It's a set of Fibes. I'm thinking of going with a Aquarian Super kick 2 for the bass batter, but again, not sure about the reso side. The set has Evans Hydros on it now, but I believe they are 25 years old, hence, the thought to replace everything (but the snare, which is fine) Also thinking of picking up a drum dial to help. Thoughts?

Evans C2 I've found have slightly more high-end to them giving them an advantage in terms of attack. That being said, if I was sitting at the back of a club, I doubt I could tell any discernible difference. Recording wise, if I was using Pinstripes I'd move the mic a bit closer (attack) and turn up the high end slightly - and then the sound tech would slap my hand and say "What the fuck do you think you're doing? @@DJENERGY210 - Totally understand. If you get a chance, next time You're at a drum shop pull a Hydraulic head out of the box, and an EC2, G2, Emperor, or PinStripe. The Hydraulic will have air bubbles in the oil. It looks like a few random Swiss cheese holes. The other heads have that rainbow look sometimes, especially if you put pressure on the film with a finger or something. The non oil filled Evans twin ply heads also feature usually one small vent hole somewhere around the perimeter of the the head, or sometime in the collar of one of the plies. This is why Evans heads are so incredibly consistent, and rarely put out a "dead" head. Remo will sometimes ship a dud that won't tune up or have any tone. Sometime a pin prick around the collar will let the air out and fix that situation. However, if we try that with am oil filled head, the oil would escape and leave you with a probably slightly more muffled EC2 type sound.

The Evans sound better imo. They sound warmer and closer to calfskin. The Remo has more attack but not as natural and desirable imo.
