Instead of all of that configuration for the exploration overview I just right click on the general overview and deactivate the faction structure objects as well as the moon/planets/sun so i can see only the stargate, the containers and neutrals/suspects warping near to my position and so i can quickly notice them if I'm busy hacking and forget to d-scan. Then I create a little "escape" tab filtering it with only celestials and adjust it over/around the ship's hud to warp in case of emergency. It's way more comfortable I think but i got a "safe point" tab too just in case they are hunters and I put it right next to the escape tab.
i use the star map in fullscreen mode, and for all the windows (including the overview window), i select the "enable always above fullscreen views". This will display all your important stuff along with the star map. This is very important to keep an eye out for any approaching hunters.
