Even MORE Scraps! | Use Up Scraps | Strip Quilting | Fast Quilt Projects | Quilt in a Day

Hello friends! Are you feeling inundated with scraps? Travel along with me as I empty out my scrap drawer even more! This cute project uses 8.5" x 11" newsprint paper. We attach strips diagonally across the paper, working from the inside to the outside to cover the rectangle. After trimming, the blocks are ready to attach to create a quilt top or any other fabric project you're considering. This quilt top can potentially be completed in one day.
Options for this project:
SQUARES - if you use a square base, either paper or fabric, turning the blocks various directions can make some neat patterns; OLD SHEET - use a colorful old sheet cut into 10 inch squares for a base, and sew directly to the fabric! The time is about the same because cutting out a lot of squares is about the same as tearing off paper. RECTANGLES - if you want to have the center strip going different directions, you need to plan for that and attach center strips in opposite directions. In this video mine go the same way.
HINT - tear the paper off before sewing blocks together!
MOST OF ALL - have fun and try something new!

I use an old sheet, cut up, as a base, rather than paper. It cuts out the ripping out step and gives one more layer of fabric in the quilt.
@sunbeamfabricart

I have done that as well. My next video features fabric as the base instead of newsprint. Thank you so much for watching and. have a wonderful day.

You could stop at 2 layers and "quilt as you go style" join with sashing, for a summer weigh quilt?

Love this!! I thought I was getting a handle on my scraps. Until today. Yep, found a yard sale that had a bag with 4 jelly roll bundles, and for $2.00, who could pass that up?? Not me, apparently. Now I have even MORE scraps, but this idea would work great for those new strips.

I like the fact that you used rectangles rather than squares for the blocks and I agree: having them going in the same direction is "energizing" to the quilt--lots of movement!

Something new I have been doing to my blocks made similar to this is leave a quarter inch to half inch beyond the foundation ..... Makes it much easier to sew the blocks together or to sashing.... You do have to be consistent in your seam allowance for assembly.

I am working on making bookbags for one of our missionary families, and wheelchair bags for a local nursing home. I discovered your channel on RU-vid on my television. All I can say is: Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! Amen! May your tribe increase! Currently, you are keeping me company while I work on book bags, etc. AT LAST! Someone who REALLY knows how to utilize scraps! I have been greatly encouraged by Bonnie Hunter, but, Annette! You REALLY know where I am living right now ... the second I try to try "organizing" my scraps (that I enjoy VERY much), I lose the battle. I like your projects for their practicality but probably the most important reason is: I FEEL your pain! Thank you for all the encouragement you have given me over the last couple of days. Thank you for the hope that I can actually accomplish most of what I have dreamed of for more than fifty years. You truly are a sunbeam in a world that seems more dreary each day. Thank you for all you have gone through bring more brightness into this old lady's heart. (I don't feel that old, but have been considered "elderly" for the last decade or so ... LOL).

@@sunbeamfabricart I am going to be home alone for the next five days and, except for Sunday morning church services, I absolutely intend to work while playing your videos ... As I work along (usually going in and out of the pantry where the vast majority of my scraps resides), I gain so much more creative energy from them. I have worked through one medium sized container full of drapery fabric .... when I got to the bottom of it, I found the top portions of Levis that I saved a number of months ago (the legs went toward a camping quilt for hunt camp) ... I just could not throw the top portions away ... I had fully intended to turn them into a large bag, but hesitated. I am learning a lot about how to accomplish that through your videos. You have been such a blessing to me - - you will never know! Congratulations on being a grandma! Your tribe is increasing! Very good! I always have said: When you have a good product, keep producing. (Some of my background comes from working/sewing in a clothing factory -- where I learned how to use a sewing machine)

I hate removing paper so I use RICKY TIMS STABLE STUFF and leave it in the blocks.... STABLE STUFF turns into a soft batting when you wash the quilt or just over time it softens. I also like to cut my string blocks a half inch larger past the "paper" / Stable Stuff. This allows for easier assembly keeping everything out of the seam allowance regardless if it is traditional paper or some other backing.

Thank you. I have wondered if the full 8 1/2 X 11 inch sheets of cheap copy paper could be used to foundation piece an interesting quilt top. You have done the work for me. I now know that it will work beautifully. I always work on two blocks at a time as I foundation string piece. This is mindless sewing which calms my mind. I waste less thread that way; plus, I have less trouble with my machine. Your quilt top is colorful, interesting, and beautiful. Again, thank you so much.

I use my scraps to make quilts for the homeless. Instead of sewing them on paper I use old fabric that I don't think is suitable for quilt tops. Maybe faded, really ugly, or to light weight, or what ever. I sew the scrappy strips on blocks of that fabric. It makes an extra layer of warmth for the homeless and I don't have to peel paper off the backs of my blocks.

Is this called string quilting? I’m using the same pattern on 10.5” square light muslin. No paper tearing.

Search online for newsprint paper for drawing doodling, lots of options, lots of sizes ☀️🧵

How in the world did you only have 1 drawer of scraps? 🤯 I have a 25 gallon bin full plus a little shoe box full of scraps, several plastic storage bags or plastic grocery bags full of scraps and leftover scraps in the bottom of project bins of each project. Admittedly the majority of them are in the crumb quilt size. With your leftover 2.5" binding strips, they could have been cut up into squares for other quilt blocks or pieced into one long strip for the Jelly Roll Race quilt. 🙃

Thanks for your comments! We downsized in 2017...a LOT... so I just don't have a lot of room. There are so many fun things to do with scraps, right? Thanks for watching and have a nice day!

I saw a lady use drier sheets for the back. Looked less difficult than the paper.🤷🏻‍♀️

You can use paper, muslin, dryer sheets or nothing at all! It's all good! Thanks for watching!

I don't understand why use the paper? I am not trying to be a know it all - honestly I am just trying to learn
@sunbeamfabricart
@sunbeamfabricart Год назад
Oh that's a great question! It's totally optional, of course. I like to use a foundation because then I know how long the pieces need to be, and when to stop adding more pieces. But I have done 'improv' strip piecing too, without a foundation. Thanks for watching.
