This is a mistake I see even the biggest DJs making over and over. If you are tired of distorted audio in your DJ sets then this video will show you how to calibrate your music volume properly and never redline again! Even better, it only takes a few minutes to set up.

Anyone that redlines shouldnt be near any equipment. Hence the traffic light system, the last orange before the red is the max the gain should be but if you are able to avoid orange lining then keep at that

What do you recommend setting that output level to in the mixer settings default is 9db headroom is it worth going up a bit I only mix with two channels and am trying to achieve the loudest mix without distortion?

What is your take regarding the argument about keeping key lock active above or below the 3 per cent range of the original bpm reducing the quality of the sound of the track as opposed to turning it off? Apparently, with the key lock on, it will start sounding more artificial and robotic, and turning it off will not harm the sound quality of the record, but the price you pay for this is the pitch change which tends to make it sound pretty strange, especially if the track contains a lot of vocals. I don't recognize a significant difference using moderate quality headphones but maybe it does make such a difference with big speakers. Would you keep the key lock on when you exceed the 3 - 4 percent above / below range of the original bpm? To what extent do you think it reduces the sound quality if it's kept on for the said range of tempo change?

Tbh I rarely go much more than this range so I tend to just leave it on. On the rare occasions I do go higher or lower I’ve not noticed any massive quality issues personally but your mileage may vary depending on type of track and potentially source material

Hey Chris. New subscriber. Been binging your vids they are amazing. I'm in my third month of djing in my bedroom and at some college parties. I have been building up my music library using pools such as zipdj and bpmsupreme and now I'm just buying the rest of the tracks I want on beatport, bandcamp, and 7digital. How important is getting a higher quality file? 99% of my tracks are 320 mp3s, flac, wav but a few from Amazon are less. Could you please provide your take on this? I'm a college student and have been reluctant to pay extra fees for wav. Thanks!

Good to have you on board! I would always say buy the best quality you can *afford* to. You may not be playing clubs now but one day you may wish to and you can tell the difference on a proper sound system. If that’s not on the cards yet and you are prepared to accept you may need to rebuy tracks at higher quality in future then I wouldn’t worry too much :) I wouldn’t do lower than 320 mp3 though

@@ReallyChrisM I also think if you record your mixes and upload them to soundcloud, mixcloud, etc having lossless media is super beneficial. I cannot stand when I hear compression artifacts in a mix.

Why don't pioneer put a built in compressor in the controller ? It's about £20 for a chip !

Great videos, love this channel and like the humour😅. Ive been Djing since around 98 and sound as always been a thing i like to perfect. Obviously getting the most high energy in the volume in the mix, without clipping or distortion. A question i would love to know, is i pre owned the DDJ 800 n then decided to get the 1000. But the sound in the recording on the 800 is alot more detailed n clearer, is that because the 800 came out later n obviously pioneer tweek things ect ? I just wanna know if i can perhaps be able to get the same recording on my 1000. The levels i keep are identical, on both units but still doesn't sound as good on the 1000 than 800. Do you know anything i could do in settings for recordings maybe ?

Not sure tbh! May be worth investing in an external sound interface if the quality is weird

I bought a parametric EQ lately and currently waiting on the FLX 10. Plan on using both together. Can you tell me how I should go about the gain & trim if there is another hardware in the mix that will alter the volume and EQ AFTER it goes out from my controller? I bought this EQ: "OMNITRONIC EQ-25 MK2"
@ReallyChrisM
@ReallyChrisM Год назад
Good question! Not an expert but looks like the EQ has an overload indicator. If that turns on, reduce your master gain into the EQ. Assuming it doesn't, then you should be ok to just adjust your speakers as desired. It should be the 2nd to last thing in the chain so you can just use the bypass switch to see how it's affecting the audio to your speakers
@felixkrell890
@felixkrell890 Год назад
@@ReallyChrisM So the chain would look like this? PA Speakers and EQ at 0 DB, Mixer trims at 0 and master level at 0. Then Trim adjust till hitting yellows --> master level adjust till hitting yellows --> EQ changes --> eventually Gain Changes on PA (hopefully not needed) ?
@ReallyChrisM

@@ReallyChrisM one last thing: if I do go with auto gain, do my own gain adjusts even matter or does it completely override that?

@@felixkrell890 you can still boost/cut the auto gain

Any advice on how do we go about balancing loudness without red lining?
@ReallyChrisM
@ReallyChrisM Год назад
As per the vid the goal is basically to get every section in the chain as loud as possible without hitting the red, one step at a time. You then have maximum headroom at the end of the chain (speakers) to go loud
@kevinmckernan2753
@kevinmckernan2753 Год назад
@@ReallyChrisM I mean loudness not amplitude. I understand the video. Example, if 2 tracks hit same dB but one is quieter I find I tend to clip into the red to balance. Maybe set the gains lower so you have more headroom to play with?
@ReallyChrisM
@ReallyChrisM Год назад
Gotcha. Yeah i would probably go that route. The more headroom you have overall the more wiggle room you have to bring either track up to compensate for those differences. You could also use the vol fader on the louder track to reduce it a touch as you bring the other boosted track in to maintain the overall master level
@paulvass7516

If ur not red lining ur not headlining
@LarryZinc
@LarryZinc Год назад
I'll be frank with everyone here. Just stop redlining and your music will sound good. Stay in the yellows!!! If it's hot, turn it down.
