In one campaign I played in, there was a character who was a cleric who specialized in constructs. By far one of the coolest concept characters I've ever seen. She started out with plush teddy bear constructs that she could imbue with healing, so they'd walk towards you and give you a Cure Light Wounds when they adorably stumbled into your shin. And then of course at later levels she just had a clay golem following her around. We had to bend some rules and outright break some others to make it all work, but man, just the flavor of that character was worth it.

Golems in DnD cheat though. The original Golem is specifically said to work because its creator imbues it with divine authority in the form of a secret name of God, so it's "alive" because God can grant life. Your average clay golem (and most of the other "X material" golems) are just statues that a spellcaster has shoved the living essence of a shackled elemental into, so they're not really "made alive" so much as they are walking coffins that become the new body of a creature that doesn't have a set "body/soul" distinction. They are actually pretty horrific if you think about it, I mean most of the things Necromancers bring back are at least mindless, these things just look mindless because they are forced to do stuff, while inside the trapped mind of the elemental spirit is probably screaming bloody murder and cursing the day you were born...

I like the idea of showing up to a place with one of these, and basically be "I'm the janitor." and convince it that you were sent there by the deity to spiff the place up. Like "Just look at this! No-one has polished this gold statue of our deity in decades!" and get to work, kinda passive aggressively pointing out how "THIS is how it *should* look!" after finishing each piece. Could even clean out "heretical" pieces. Or collect tithing if that's a thing. I especially like the mental image of convincing it to lift you up to clean the statue, arguing that "I can't STAND on it. That'd be heresy.".

I'm just going to say, you got another one or two plots with this thing. 1. Got a petrefied friend/source of information? Find the gigant and barter them for their animating ability. They may still be stony however (permanent stone skin hack?) 2. A cult may possess eternal life as long as members pay for it with devotion to the cause. 3. Convince it to help you against something else like a false hydra. 4. Help your friendly neighbourhood Stone giant to craft a statue/jewelry to impress the gigant. EDIT - Added 4th point.

Creatures animated by gigant are just mindless constructs serving the gigant akin to zombies and golems. To give them consciousness, you still need to un-petrify them. Remember also that the gigant's INT is 6, a level of 5-year child. You will need to put a considerable effort in your words to convince it do something for you, not only because it might be unwilling, but also because it may not understand what you're talking about.

Idea for a blackstone gigant NPC. Party is sent to an old rundown chathidrel, looking for (insert religous artifact). The chathidrel is overrun with vegetation and animals (sprinkle in any flavor of enemies "that make sense in the area" you like for a combat encounter if you're feeling spicy.) The party looks around and finds the door to the basment, they enter and are met by the gigant who acts as a tour guide teaching the party about the history of the chathidrel and the founding of the relegion, the gigant uses the petrified remains of bandits/theives that tried stealing the (insert religous artifact) as demnstrations of the historical events that lead to the founding of the relegion, finally the party (and gigant) arrive at the (insert religous artifact) chamber, if the party was sent by the same church they could show an insignia, or they could've escorted a memeber of the church (temporary cleric) of the church and tell the gigant that they'er here to retrive the artifact (the party can bring the gigant too if they'er feeling spicy) If the party was sent by bandits/theives they could try to lie to the gigant (if failed the party is TPKed if this is an early game quest.) Party gets mega rich but are hunted by the church. Feel free to add ideas or your own twist to this :)

That came right in time! The next session for my campaign the players are going to do a heist to get a prisonerthat has been set in the vigilance of the god Helm. I was bashing my head trying to think what would be guarding this prisoner, because it most certainly wasn't going to be Helm itself. They now have two options, either they reason with the Giant to give up the prisoner, or they'll have to find a way to actually pull up a heist against a guardian of the God of Vigilance

I like the idea of a couple of these things serving as war engines of sorts for an army which is specifically out to petrify their enemies. Paired with Medusa, Cockatrices and Basilisks in the ranks, the Gigants would lag behind unless needed at the front, animating petrified corpses and adding to the ranks of the big bad. That seems like a very effective, theatrical use for this monster. Maybe I'll do that!

@@skipmageYou could make some bad-ass variant gargoyles with it, though. Off the top of my head, you could have one that's half 'true' gargoyle and another statue bonded onto it (like an ettin), under the control of the gigant. So the gargoyle part would be alive and driven insane by the fact that it's other half is controlled by this demon-like being. Clerics make the coolest villains. Being able to say everything is explained away because 'a god did it' means pretty much anything is up for grabs.

I kind of have an idea of a temple placing a Blackstone Gigant (or two) and their past victims as a guardian to a Legendary Weapon connected to the god (akin to the Blood of Lathandrer mace from Baldur's Gate III) this would give a party a couple of options to obtain the weapon, either solve the puzzle (which they might have noticed on the way to the lair) that the Gigante could inform them of or fight and try to beat it and the statue army.

I feel it would be fun to explore a Gigant that went rogue on the direct command of its god, or one that somehow became an avatar of said god. I can't help but think these would be amazing in the hands of peaceful gods who don't want their clerics and other followers fighting. A monastery dedicated to a peaceful way of life is attacked by a horde of fiendish orcs, the monks retreat into the inner sanctum; the orcs begin to loot and sack the town, but then the ground starts to shake, and the beautiful statues around the sanctum spring to life, laying waste to these would-be raiders! They were spared only because they promised to spread word of this God so that they might regain their power, and the Gigant itself acts as the players patron, gifting them powers as they spread word of this god more and more.

I'm making a ttrpg that was originally based on dnd and going to be a supplement but because of wizard's ogl bullshit I have decided to completely build a new system. All that to say I love these creatures and I'm going to have a large ancient city that they guard included. Thank you for bringing them to my attention.

These things would be great for a Shadow of the Colessus style campaign, as each one is imbeued with a fragment of power you could flug them as being containers of that gods essences, so by killing them you could end up bring back a god.

Speaking as someone running a long-on-hiatus Eberron campaign, I'm thinking blackstone gigants could work as creations of the daelkyr Orlassk in that setting. Definitely helps that DD used art of the stone cursed for one of its abilities, since I've already used those for a cult of Orlassk in my campaign.

I was once told that dungeon dad didn't take requests of monsters from outside dungeons and dragons source books, not even d20 modern. Now, they have a creature from Dune next time. Well poop 😝

A couple of Dune monsters were converted and put in Dragon Magazine, but renamed to avoid copyright issues. So what you were told still holds up.

I am running a campaign where the party has their dreams attacked while long resting, transporting them to a place that represents one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. For famine, I as using a scaled-up version of Death House from Curse of Strahd. I'm going to use this monster as a guardian of the house, preventing the party from leaving as opposed to the bricks that usually appear

I have the fondest memories of golems, granted this is not so much a typical golem, and that makes the experience better for its sentience. They are so much like children, trained, programmed, or whatnot with the simplest of actions, but of course with so much physical brutality in their ‘make’ its a wonderful dichotomy for the novice player to figure things out. In my defense, NAT20 golem punch the dungeon wall to bypass all the traps in order to the exit safely on the otherside of the wall was necessary.

On a mechanical level this is interesting because if it went through a mass of commoners it would effectively level up a group from CR0 to an animated armour. Maybe a church trying desperately to make an army will unleash one on the congregation to turn them into units of stone soldiers

I was specing out a golem army to fight against a starspawn armageddon. Was going to use key golems since they can regenerate, their keys were going to be held by a burrowing golem that traveled underground. When the golems were destroyed on the surface, the burrowing golem would rotate to the back of the line allowing for them to reform. That army was also going to include golem HIMARS for artillery support and a massive golem with individual organs that provided different buffs. Each eye could each cast Vengeful Gaze Of God, the skin caused wild magic when hit, and the heart could regenerate any damage or lost organ. Neutronium golems were also recommended to me but I felt that would break what was reasonable inside the setting. Unfortunately the DM running things got into medical school and that was the end of his free time.

Petrified creatures aren't considered corpses in most cases, so you aren't just dead, you're _super_ dead until unpetrified.
