This absolutely insane creature from Dungeons and Dragons history has flown under the radar for way too long. This week we're checking out the wingless wonder, also known as the alkada, from AD&D! What started as a joke monster or "spell waster" is much more than it might seem!

Really want to see the Suel Lich in 5e. It's probably the most horrifying monster in the sense of what its existence implies and just the chain of destroyed lives and souls for one to be as old as they are. Also it's one of the myrad of ways that liches got around the old rule of "liches can't gain experience" which is the main reason why PCs wouldn't want to become liches in ad&d.

I love this idea of this kindly grandpa with a garden full of Wingless Wonders who turns out to actually be a ruthless master wizard whose pets are all former rivals. I think it might be even more interesting if, since then, the man has mellowed out and is as of presently a genuine ally of the party, and might regret his former actions, but feels like removing the curse is not an option since A) the uncursed wizards would definitely try to kill him and B) they are very likely all super insane by now, so he is just genuinely trying to provide a nice life to the Wonders he has created long ago, believing it's the best thing he can do for them. If the sins of his past come up, it would be a fun moral quandary for the party to decide whether he should still be punished for them, and if so, what they should do with the Wonders. Just leave them be? Put them out of their misery? Or try to remove their curses, knowing how terribly this could turn out?

What if it eats an orb of annihilation?
@danielgehring7437
@danielgehring7437 8 месяцев назад
@@thecreepoid901 Ooh, I know this one, actually. Since the orb is comprised entirely of magic, it simply winks out of existence while in an anti-magic field. The location of the orb is still tracked and it will pop back into existence once the anti-magic field dissipates, but during the time it is considered not to exist. So a Wingless Wonder could not, in fact, eat one, it would just be eating air. Although that, of course, is only the official ruling. I'm sure we could come up with a loophole, 'cuz that sounds hella fun, lol.

If one of the party gets transformed they they should suddenly realize that the weird things they saw bumbling around before they reached the beholder's lair were probably adventurers that the beholder defeated… do they feel guilty now for killing them on sight? 👀 What a cute little dude...it kind of gives me 80s Trolls vibes 😅 I think it could be really interesting to have different wonders have different auras, or even have a wonder's aura change depending on its mood or the items it eats. I'm thinking it projects an aura that's somehow the negation of what's inside it or what it's made of (e.g. default is anti-magic since it's a transformed wizard). Like you said, there's just so much potential, as with most creatures that actively avoid combat. Thanks, DD! See you tomorrow at PAX! 👏🏽

Idea for use the monster: a rouge that trained the wingle wonder to swallow and puke specific items. So can be used as comical duo but really good thief that breaks into a bank full of magic defense. Or can be the opposite. A ruthless thief that used the wingle as the minion to hit when something goes wrong.

Thank you for conunually giving me creatures to use in my ongoing campaign, my party is currently looking for the eye of vecna, so is vecna, but now I have a concrete reason why it's never been found, a good dragon ate it and had someone turn him into this hilarious creature, thank you

If a wingless wonder can be born, then what happens when you try to "cure" one that was never cursed in the first place. Does it become a person? Does it stay the same? Does it die? I can imagine a wizard that has a "pet" wingless wondering that's actually their child.

What if one of these things gained class levels, legendary power, and turned evil. The party will be laughing when they see their new BBEG, until they realize its also a level 20 barbarian with legendary actions and total immunity to magic.

The wingless wonder could potential communicate through writing or sign languages. This said it is a cute and funny little critter.

Imagining increasingly exasperated Wizard dealing with a party where nobody seems to know how to read "Please cast dispel magic or lift curse on me."
@jedstanaland2897
@jedstanaland2897 8 месяцев назад
@brettwood1351 If there was an additional magical effect on the wingless wonder that prevents communication then the statement of it can't communicate would have merit however simply stating as a fact that they can't from the start is a flaw in the lore and function of the creature. On a side note There is a particularly funny and mostly harmless very old creature that is halfway between a sea urchin or sea anemone that is buoyant in the air or water or anything else. This creature is basically harmless because the only way that it can hurt you is for you to take an action that triggers an attack of opertunity while in its threatening range of five feet or bumbling directly into it. They are filter feeders that can't attack any other way and they can't cause lethal damage under any circumstances. They have 1d4 +1 hp and minimum ability scores for all stats while also being unable to move under their own actions. They have an ability that gives Unlimited attacks of opertunites and another that give them a chance to split/ reproduce every turn and that is everything. There CR rating is 1/16 and their Hp is always restored when they split. They don't give experience but every time you kill one there is a chance that you will be able to harvest their tentacles for use in a non-magical tempary weapon modification that gives it a +1 to non-lethal damage and a to paralyze whatever you hit. Yes they can paralyze you while they are alive but they really need to hit you a lot to do that.

Hey man I love your stuff and I'd love to see you do a video on the volt from the fiend folio. It has such a unique looking appearance that has always stuck with me ever since I saw it when I was young. I think it has tons of potential to be a great monster. If only it had gotten another chance with a reprint. I'd love to see you and your artists give it a 5th edition glow up.

One way I could see them being used is by mage slaying bounty hunters. I'd imagine each of them carrying one of the little guys around in a small cage on their person, and (depending on GM ruling) enjoying a personal portable anti magic zone. Could even give them access to the spell, letting them turn their victims into more Wingless Wonders.

Legend Lore is your best friend when encountering this monster. I would guess that most wizards singled out for transformation into Wingless Wonders would be legendary enough for Legend Lore to apply to them.
