How can a 19-year-old can afford to climb Everest? Well, Ryan Mitchell, 19, living in central Massachusetts, explains how in this podcast.
Ryan, a Summit Coach client, contacted me about a year ago, wanting advice and coaching on how to climb Everest in the Spring of 2022. He had little to no experience, so while I told him there were many companies who would take his money and have him on Everest, the best approach would be to wait at least a year and gain the skills and experience it would take to make a safe attempt on the world's highest peak. He agreed, and we've been working together for the past twelve months.
In this podcast, Ryan explains how he is funding his climbs, his training approach, and critically, is his "why"
I know you will enjoy this.
Climb On!

Thanks to both Ryan and Alan for this fascinating interview. I watched all of Ryan's Everest videos and both his commentary and video quality were superb. I felt his commentary skills got even better as time went on. Also I really like his honesty. His determination and focus at such a young age is very impressive. Well done on achieving your goal Ryan.

Personally, I think you should have to have a “super-license” to climb Everest, which would require submitting 2-3 other 7-8K meter peaks. But, I think it’s awesome that he’s chasing his dreams.

Ryan summited Aconcagua, 7,000 meters. Generally, I agree with having experience requirements. China requires a 7000-meter for foreigners and an 8000-meter for Chinese nationals. Nepal has zero requirements.

Ryan is doing a great job so far on Everest. Aconcagua is impressive, but as far as technicality goes…it’s a walk up.

His parents are to be commended. He seems very level-headed and far more mature than most 19 year olds. Many others his age who had achieved his level of financial success would blow through the money buying fast cars and drugs. Instead, he has invested it in himself, because by aquiring mountaineering skills that will help him to achieve these mountain climbing goals, he is also gaining mental toughness skills that will help him in so many other areas of life. Thanks for this interview, Alan. Really enjoyed it! Very inspiring!

I think the commercialization of Everest has shown that it really isn’t that hard to summit for a healthy person with a few years of training. If you could attempt the summit year round 10x more people would be able to summit and it wouldn’t be that special. What will eventually happen is that nobody will care who reaches the summit and only care if they die in the attempt. Let me know when the next person leaves base camp before any ladders or ropes are set and gets to the summit alone.

@20:24 , you said so ething that really helps me in my struggles right now. “ you let your mind keep you from doing things you were able to do” ….. I am dealing with working through alot of “ blame” for things that happened to me and my son decades ago. Such a traumatic experience, but as an adult ,I was able to push through it, but as my son got older, the trauma affected him differently, and has now caused him to go through alot this last few years. Long story short, My husband told me I had to quit blaming myself, that I had no control, nor could I know what happened, and the result it would have on my children. I have started realizing it has affected the things I was physically able to do, because the mental anguish was taking me away from enjoying life at all. Thank you, even though my story isnt about climbing an actual mountain, I have hope now that my mental changes can be overcome, and that I can start physically becoming better able again to “ climb “ the simple everyday mountains I face.

People have been pretty nasty towards him on his channel but I don't get it... he's just like any explorer from the past few hundred years at that age, excited, ready to go, ready to learn, and yeah... he uses modern tech to document it... but past exploroers used any tool at their disposel to record/journal/draw/photograph their own explorations. Good for him. Looking foward to seeing how his summit attempt goes.

I really enjoy this. I just don’t like the aspect of children making money while streaming. From child labor to not honest work, while the country already doesn’t have enough money to pay hard working adults. I am proud of this kid for his persistence in wanting to enjoy the world, where most streamers are too comfortable staying in their rooms gaming, making tons of money; again, while there is mass inflation happening. Obviously this problem is not this kids fault, he’s just a result. We all are a result of the times we live in. Shit, i was only 13 when my parents took a hit in 2008; that made me grow up fast. I am not saying I am right, I’m just sharing what I see. I’m always open to new perspectives. I’m also not for a person working hard for companies that don’t care about them, so I very well could be wrong here; he is working for himself which is very impressive, I just hope he understands that if he ever has employees in the future who work for him, he will treat them right.. 4th Gen. I don’t see the value in listing my relatively modest mountaineering exploits, as they are inferior to yours… but not bad for someone in their early 30’s. I have also travelled the world (leisure and work), like yourself, and know that most of the third world can only dream of such things.
