Take a seat, grab that drink and get comfy guys as this is a long one! We had a lot of fun filming this one and we hope you enjoy watching it!
Following a scenic drive up into the mountains we reached a small lodge (Hilltop Guesthouse) at the Taksindu Pass (3000m), where we arranged with the friendly owner, Pasang Sherpa, to leave the Troopy under his watchful eye for the duration of our trek. Before leaving the Troopy behind and setting off for the epic month ahead we had a few things to get sorted; repacking our packs, charging batteries (a costly exercise in the lodges), packing down the Troopy making sure everything was going to be secure and safe.
The following morning we managed to get away by about 10am for the first part of the trek; Taksindu to Namche. Most people (95%) usually fly into Lukla and hike for two days to reach Namche; we decided to trek the extra few days because we could drive there as well as get some (much needed) fitness preparation for what was to come.
To reach Namche we took 5 days, covering 50km of constantly changing terrain, approximately 4km of elevation loss and gain, a million farting mules pushing their way past, and glimpses of the snow capped mountains peeping their heads out ahead of us.
Following a killer and dusty hike up the mountain to Namche (3,440m), we arrived at lunch time and found a small lodge to stay with a very friendly host, the Valley View Lodge. After 5 days of trekking it was nice to take the boots off! We spent 2 nights here, taking the next day as an acclimatisation day. The air traffic in Namche is non-stop with helicopters landing at one of many helipads bringing supplies in and taking tourists on scenic flights (or picking them up when they've had enough with trekking!). Being with 2 males who take an interest to these sorts of things, we spent a good chunk of our day off at one of the helipads getting right up close to the action. So close that if you stood up when a chopper was landing you might get a haircut.
Okay, okay now for what this whole episode is about, our UNGUIDED 3 PASSES TREK + EVEREST BASE CAMP! A 130km trek that includes visiting the bustling Ama Dablam Base Camp (4,570m), climbing Chukhung Ri (5,550m), crossing Kongma La (5,535m), ticking EBC (5380m) and Kalapathar (5,643m) off the bucket list, crossing Cho La (5,380m) and its slippery glacier, exploring Gokyo and its beautiful lakes, and finishing it all off with an amazing view of Gokyo and Everest from Renjo La (5,388m).
As this is a long post, we'll finish it here. You can read the full write up over on our blog here - www.thewayoverland.com/single...
That's a wrap for this episode! Thanks for watching! In the next episode we’ll be heading back to Kathmandu before exploring western Nepal.

Congratulations on an excellent video that gives those who have yet to experience Nepal trekking numerous insights into what to expect. Having done some, but not all, of your trek and now seeing what you have filmed brought back wonderful memories. My first trek in Nepal was in 1974 before the advent of tea houses, so I normally slept in the homes of local Nepalis or Tibetans and sometimes in empty shepherd's huts. No matter when one visits Nepal, it is crucial to do a trek and it is best to do one that is a bit off the beaten track. Again, congratulations on a superb film which truly captured the experience of trekking in the Himalayas. Regards, Michael Davis (Balmain East, NSW, Australia)

@@TheWayOverland We did our 1974 trek in the month of December, which is not a good time to trek...too cold and too much snow. But we did not go over any high passes, so we did not have to contend with snow, yet it was very cold at night. Of all of the many treks that I've done in Nepal that first one was the most memorable. I loved your video and understand that you are headed toward Europe and eventually G.B. I wish you well in your travels...stay safe and healthy! We look forward to seeing more of your videos. Small detail: you are not holding the trekking poles correctly. The wrist strap should go over the back of your hand and between the palm and the grip. Do not put the hand through the loop horizontal, but from below between the loop and the pole.This way all the weight is on the wrist and you do not need to squeeze the grip at all, also much freer movement in every direction, you can drop the poles hanging in the right position, place your palm on the top of the grip when jumping over streams. Also safer if you fall down your hand does not get between the grip and the ground. Just try it and you'll understand.

For those of you who plan to hike to EBC and back only here is a free piece of advice: DO NOT go through Tengboche both on the way up and down. There is a much more interesting high trail offering staggering views high across the valley. This High Scenic Trail goes from Namche to Mong La - Phortse (overnight there) - Pangpoche, where it joins the standard route to Dingpoche. Better views, plenty of wildlife, no trekkers. Adds no days to the itinerary but makes it more interesting and exclusive. Or inclusive actually, with more variety and more complete.

Wow cheers Steve! We primarily used our Sony A7r. It’s depth of colour is 👌🏼 Usually we use a DJI Osmo+ as the footage is so smooth though it’s downfall is that the image quality just doesn’t compare to the Sony! Since the trek we’ve been slowly transitioning to use the Sony more 👍🏼

I was thinking about this trek and wondering... did you sleep in tea houses every night... or did you sometimes camp? Did the tea houses provide all/most of your food, or did you pack in a lot of food? All of which kind of leads to: what was in those packs of yours (if not camping gear and food)??
@TheWayOverland
@TheWayOverland 5 лет назад
Hi John ☺️ Yes we slept in the tea houses every night as it’s so cheap (we spent a total of about 35 USD for the 3 of us) and it meant we didn’t need to carry camping equipment. We took a small supply of snacks to help keep the costs down though we purchased all of the meals from the tea houses, which was also part of a deal between us and the owners for cheap accommodation. In our packs we carried cameras, chargers, toiletries, first aid kit, socks, thermals, wind and waterproof pants, down jacket, lightweight clothing, sleeping bag and a book. It fills up fast!

Can you tell us whether it can be done without a sleeping bag ? And also is hiring a guide an absolute must , you guys didn't!!!! And did the glacier crossings pose any threat , crevasses to be specific ??? I know I asked a lot of questions , actually planning to do it this winter ,thanks in advance .
@TheWayOverland
@TheWayOverland 5 лет назад
We went in Oct-Nov and 100% needed a sleeping bag. If you’re going in winter, take a sleeping bag! ❄️ You kind of answered your own question about the guide 😜 Though maybe you’d be better off getting one as in the middle of winter if it’s been snowing the track might not be easily visible. That’s a hard one for me to say as we’ve only done the trek once in good conditions. With the glacier crossing you do need to watch your step in some places when climbing over the rocks though it’s very do-able. Good luck! 🏔
