In 1976 two British soldiers completed the first successful all military expedition to the summit of Everest. To celebrate this endeavour, the Army return 30 years later to conquer Everest once more. The plan: To tackle the peak via the treacherous "West Ridge", a notoriously dangerous climb that has only been completed by 19 people.

I am deeply moved by the joint teamwork, the teamspirit, the meticulous organisation of this expedition. I will never be able to summit Everest, but I enjoy these documentaries. This one especially. We should leave the whole covid disaster into your hands. After watching this series I am sure you have the best organisational skills to tackle this pandemic. Thank you to all team members for rising my hopes for the best human kind has to offer.

I am hooked on Everest documentaries. Most I find so egocentric and nauseating. Rich playboys and girls walking in the prepared routes of the amazing Sherpas. This documentary was different. It takes a bigger person to make admit defeat. If only some of the self obsessed who now lie dead and embedded on the mountain did the same. Home safe and sound. As Hillary once said reaching the summit is optional but returning safe is obligatory. Good work guys.

I'm with you on that Jacqueline, totally hooked!! But not just Everest. I also watch docs/vids on K2, Nanga Parbat, Denali, etc. You should take a look, i'm sure you would love them too. :-)

It is likely that one or more of them would have died had they gone ahead. Heads up to Dave Bunting for making the right decision for everyone so that they could return to their families. Climbing Everest may be a good thing but it is not worth dying for. I have read Into Thin Air, The Climb, left for Dead and watched many documentaries which indicates my interest in Everest particularly but it is not worth in anyway whatsoever to die for.

Can someone explain to me why you can not make it avalanche with dynamite like the do on some slopes for skiers??? I mean I understand that you can't be close.normally that's done out of a chopper and they can't fly that high without huge risk. as far as I know the Eurocopter only touched down on the summit once before but why can they not plant and set off explosives by remote???? That would sure make it a lot safer after its cleared or am I missing something?

Logistics within the available timeframe. They'd need to calculate requirements, source explosives and the means of remote detonation (in a wet environment) and have all of it available (via yakk shipment) in base camp. It probably isn't easy to buy explosives, and you can't just use them willynilly for your purposes - you'd have to be sure you wouldn't trigger other avalanches on the populated routes, for example. Or damage the surrounding topography of the narrow gully. You probably also need trained operatives and potentially, various licences to buy, transport and use explosives. If all this went favourably, they'd have to replan the whole assault on the summit. They'd have to plan to lug all this gear up, and time the explosion with the summit attempt. It may even be a 3-step operation. At this point, they only had a two week window left, at best, assuming the good weather held. It also assumes they had enough rations to wait and the money left to buy all this detonation equipment. There's also the risk that they cause an avalanche, only to have it snow again over night and they are back where they started. Or they could clear the route in the gully, but increase risk elsewhere in the outer impact zone. In short, it's not a commercial ski run at 4,000ft.

Bill Goose - If they can’t climb up because it’s too dangerous how do you think they’ll plant explosives up there????

Too much talking, the narrator, and the music. Ive watched lots of mountain documentries. Prefer to just watch them through their climb.

It just proved the sherpas did all the work and when it came for the soilders to do the REAL work by themselves. They failed. They should have had secong plan since they were soldiers.

Yeah, should've called in Storm from X-men and shifted that avalanche risk. That's what the sherpas would've done.

They failed because they show no respect for the sherpas and the creator , god showed them that if you want to achieve goals you have show your compassion for the people of that region who believe the true spirituality of who guides them every step of the way, not their money but faith , the mountain is the boss not you, and the sherpas know the terrain and the decisions they make are smart ones to stay alive

I cannot believe this absurdity has likes 😂. If you feel the sherpas weren't respected, just say that. No need for delusional ravings about God's revenge 🤣🤣

Barbara Jeffries - They failed because of the high risk of an avalanche. It was their decision to pull the plug, not gods or the mountains

not at all. unforseen circumstances and if they had continued likely would have led to deaths. hugely disappointing but 100 percent the right call.one of the only documentaries i have seen where common sense has overtaken ego.
