The video is even more powerful, along with the song. Especially the ending, looking into the lives of a perfect life and a perfect family, when real life is so screwed up.
What most people don't get is that we're all one bad decision from going on top of life to the rock bottom. I've been on both sides of the coin, have had plenty and I've been without.
@Yvette Brand no offense intended. I don't know you, or your circumstances. But I see people that are always in trouble with the law complaining about it as if they didn't break the law again. Or people complain about lack of money but somehow have money for tatoos/drugs/alchohol/phones/etc. I heard about this girl who had 3 kids from 2 different guys and got mad some guy slept with her on the first date then won't return her calls. All I could do was laugh at her. If you ever find yourself in a hole, first thing you do is STOP DIGGING.
@@matthewgraham2619 And to the millions who stop digging, there lives don't improve anyway, at last in part because no one can see past the bad circumstances that led to their bad outcomes. Most of where you end up has to do with where you start from. A lot of the rest is just dumb luck. A much much smaller portion is personal choices, but that's all anyone ever focuses on.
This track always reminds me of a saying I heard, something like - "be kind to people you meet, you don't know what battle they are fighting". That's not the actual saying, but it's close i think.
I was 35 when this song came out in 1998; I loved it from the first listen. Absolutely one of the best and most meaningful songs to come out of the 90s!
I was 16 and this was one of the first CDs I bought with my own money, along with "Back in Black", "Appetite for Destruction" and the Blues Brothers soundtrack. I don't know why I got "Whitey Ford" but I'm glad I did and I still have that CD some 20 years later.
Love this song & if people could always place themselves in someone else’s shoes before using human negative traits such as Judgement, Shame, Greed, Lack of empathy...this song reminds people that they can easily end up in the same situation. Those who can place themselves in another’s shoes & understand what they might be going through, thank God for your compassion & empathy.
Some great songwriting about some heavy stuff. Words that hit home as we've all known some people who have gone through this. The older I get, the more I try not to judge and sometimes even help.
I usually hate reaction video’s. But you wear your heart on your sleeve. Your facial expressions when the lyrics hit you seriously gave me goosebumps. Great song too, obviously.
I've watched these videos and listened to these songs all my life, but watching you react to them, and thinking about hearing these songs for the first time, makes me cry while I am watching you. Thank You for letting me walk a mile with your eyes.
I was just a teenager when this song was released in 1998. It's one of the best songs of its time. That tune still sounds so damned good, and its message is so important.
I’m so glad I found this. This song is and was a banger, and the message is so beautiful ❤ I’m old, i was around when this song was all over the radio.❤️❤️❤️
Yessir. I find it hard not being judgemental of how said person will spend the money or whatever I give, but I gotta remember that it's not my problem, really. They are grown men and women and I don't know their situations. I'm proselytizing for some reason, but my point is that everybody needs a little grace in their life.
This song is a timeless classic. It is as relevant today as it was the day it came out. I never get tired of hearing it. I wore my cassette out from listening to not only this song but the whole album way too much.
"What It's Like" examines a number of extremely difficult themes in a way few pieces of art ever could. We all have our struggles, we all have weaknesses, and we are all sometimes cruel. Empathy, love, and a desire to help others must be our response, otherwise we are no more human than the beasts of the field.
This song resonates! I have two of his CD's-Eat At Whitey's and Whitey Ford Sings The Blues. So many good songs. Love For Real, I Can't Move, Babylon Feeling, Ends... please explore further. This was such a great song, and a great reaction. Thank- you.
I was 19 when this song came out. It Was all over the radio and big hit. Listening to it now, and having lived a bit more life, the song really hits home more, when compared to the age I was.
I know this channel did Southern Man by Neil Young recently too, the riff in this one seems similar to that one to me, and the beat seems similar to For What it's Worth, I always felt Everlast was inspired by both those songs when doing this one
The family at the end is their own family- that homeless guy was the dad, the daughter was the pregnant lady, and the son was the guy with piercing. They were a happy/perfect family, yet unlucky things could still happen to them.
