This song is about a depressed person looking for anything to find meaning and hope. In this case, he's looking for sex to bring this to him. You really need to listen to the entire Downward Spiral album to see the toll depression takes on the protagonist's life. This is a top 5 album of all time!!!

On the other hand, if she was shocked by Closer, idk how she'd handle Eraser, Big Man with a Gun, the title track, Heresy... Trent didn't have a problem with saying what he meant harshly and intently.

This song is not about what it appears. It's from the album "The Downward Spiral" which is a concept album, one song continues on to the next. Trent Reznor was dealing with depression issues as well as addiction - this amazing album is the outcome. Trent Reznor has many awards and in my opinion, is a genius.

warrior poet. trent in his prime was a force of nature. arguably hes in his prime now albeit healthier and more centered ..... but my "prime" for trent was him at his most conflicted and uncertain. that moment in time? thats where exploration / risk / fearlessness / openess meet. that right there? thats when downward spiral happened. ( although fragile? just wow. masterpiece )

Trent Reznor is known as a detail guy: a meticulous composer and manipulator of sound, layers upon layers of it. From his band's genesis 32 years ago, the leader of Nine Inch Nails has been known for songs of deep, menacing pain, rage and self-destruction. Today, Reznor's dark days of alcohol and drug abuse are behind him - and he finds himself, with a wife and two young kids.

OMG! Fav Fav Fav Song! "Closer" is a song about self-hatred and obsession, but to the artist's dismay, the song was widely misinterpreted as a lust anthem due to its chorus. Two versions of the songs music video were produced, directed by Mark Romanek, and first aired on May 12, 1994. The for television version of the music video was edited so that the removed scenes were replaced with a title card that read "Scene Missing," and in instances where the word fuck was edited out, the scene was accompanied by a stop in the video motion, making it appear as if the stop was a result of defective film (this was supposedly done to make sure the flow of the song was not affected). The unedited version of the video was shown on Playboy TV's music video show Hot Rocks in 1994. In mid-2002, the unedited version aired on MTV2 as part of a special countdown showcasing the most controversial videos ever to air on MTV. In 2006, "Closer" was voted No. 1 in a VH1 Classic poll titled "20 Greatest Music Videos of All Time. Trent Reznor later said that, in retrospect, "The rarest of things occurred: where the song sounded better to me, seeing it with the video. And it's my song." Most versions of song released as the single are titled "Closer to God" & are 13 seconds longer than the album version. Also; on the album, the piano tune at the end of the song is abruptly cut off in order to segue into the next track, "Ruiner"; whereas on the single, the tone of the last piano key plyed and the background sounds are allowed to play out longer at the end.

The album is called Downward Spiral and is a concept album, basically is a guy who goes on that Downward spiral so from song 1 to the last (hurt) is the story how he gets deeper and deeper to the botton, so closer as raw at it is is just part of that awful journey, that's kinda why that song is in that context.

This song is part of a greater story, told over the course of the album The Downward Spiral. It's the story of how a mans life is taken apart, due to violence, madness and addiction. So this song is supposed to have those mixed feelings attached to it. It's bad for you, but it feels so good, but as things ramp up, you feel a loss of control leading ultimately, nowhere good. It's also theorized by some that, since at the time of the recording Trent Reznor was addicted to Heroin, the song is being sung from the needles perspective "you let me penetrate you" as in, needle penetrates skin. It's heavy stuff.

I always thought character in this song is torn between his lust and his despair. And that "closer to God" meant the only time he felt alive and connected was when he was with this person he can't let go of. Not a happy song, but a very honest expression of a state of mind we've all been in at one point or another. Also, "God" pops up in a number of Trent Reznor's songs and it rarely ever means "God". It's usually whatever people worship. Money, power, government, authority, sex. Things like that.

I had heard Down In It from Pretty Hate Machine and kinda dismissed it as a one off single and I was like how did he get from that sound to this??? His musical progression has been so impressive and he is truly an artist. When I listened to The Downward Spiral I didnt get it at first it jist sounded like a lot of noise, it took thr third listen before I was able to truly listen to it ans understand which was what Trent was shooting for, he wanted people to find things in the music you didnt get the first time. It was truly a recording that was a piece of art and told a great story of redemption.

You have to listen to the whole album, “The Downward Spiral, “ to understand. There is a lot of imagery in this song and hyperboles to understand before completely judging it.

I heard this song the year it came out and I was about 13 or 14 years old. My friend brought me to a friend of their's place and we listened to it in secret in their garage so their parents wouldn't hear it. It blew my mind forever. NIN is high up in my top 5 bands and I've seen them live three times. This song still gives me the same chicken skin as the first time I heard it. Trent Reznor is an amazing musician. 🖤

The personality behind this song is a bit clearer if you've listened to Pretty Hate Machine, the first album. That entire album is one great song after another, one of the best debut albums in rock.

@Brian Cairns I think in this case, just listening to the whole of Downward Spiral would help put this song into a lot more context. It's very much a concept album, so you can hear the downward spiral as the album goes on.

When I saw you were going to react to this song, I thought my girl doesn't know what she is in for. The song was more about substance addiction, and the sexual part was just a metaphor for said addiction. Great song once you get by the initial shock.
