It's rare that Phil has a guitar and Don doesn't. Don was always the lead to Phil's strum. Maybe because their daddy was there? But Phil saying "play it Dad".. beautiful.
Dad played it beautifully. Guys like lke should have been world famous, they were that good. Thank goodness for Chet Atkins and Merle Travis for bringing that style of picking into the lives of everyone.
Short but sweet. Don and Phil harmonizing so beautifully, Phil playing the guitar instead of Don - unusual - and their dad Ike playing with them. And Johnny Cash introducing them! Great clip!
Their mama Margaret taught me to sing harmony when I use to stay with her while recording in Nashville. And I use to play that guitar of Ike's... I loved that time in my life... And would not trade those memories for nothing...
My Dad and Margaret were second cousins, so he spent a lot of time with them when he was young. Ike taught him to play Cannonball Rag and that was the first song my Dad learned to play. He spent a lot of time with Ike and Mose Rager. In fact Mose once said that my Dad learned to play that style of guitar quicker than anyone he had ever seen and he really thought that he'd end up recording in Nashville or someplace, but he just wasn't interested in doing that.
Their Dad, Ike Everly ,was one of the pioneers of that thumb picking style of guitar playing. He was a big influence on Merle Travis who in turn was a big influence on Chet Atkins who was a big influence to millions of guitar pickers around the world.
Yeah, I had no idea that it was actually Ike Everly wo taught Merle Travis the thumbpicking and was really surprised when The Everly Brothers mentioned that in multiple interviews. And Yes as you say, Merle then influenced Chet Atkins and Chet influenced Scotty Moore and many others.
Just watched an old Gene Autrey movie. Last week at my gig I sang Blueberry Hill to remember Fats Domino. Never sang it before. I discovered Gene Autrey was first to record it. Fast forward, I then found Gene Autrey co-wrote this song. I listened to it time and time again on the Ev Bros "Songs our daddy taught" us LP in the late 50's. I saw Don and Phil in a UK tour in the 60's with Bo Diddly. Rolling Stones were support act and wore suits. When Phil died I learned Cathay's Clown with a pal and it is on RU-vid. AMAZING to see them here with their father, JC and his brother. This is an absolute GEM. I might do this at my gig next week. One I learned and sang recently that they did on that Songs our Daddy LP was "I'm just here to get may baby out of jail". Johnny Cash started to sing that song for his live San Quentin record but forgot the words halfway through. You can hear the record on RU-vid where he say, "I forgot the words, OK guys, Orange Blossom Special".
+phantommanass I LOVE this song almost regardless off who sings it but in my head I always hear my Uncle singing it echoing off Red Rock. This was played at my Grampa funeral also requested by my Mom and sung by her Uncle's live. When I hummed it, someone always wanted to know what tune I had in my head.
In love with all of there songs one good thing about country music is that they tell there own stories in every lyrics you hear on the radio, yt or anywhere or what ever. Don't get to hear good music that tells a story these days Iove the Everly Brothers I can relate to most of there songs
This doesn't mean much (if anything) to non-guitarists. However, the guitar that Tommy Cash was holding when introduced and that John played during the song is a D-45S from the Martin Custom Shop. Assuming this show was shot in the early 70s and the guitar was made no later than the mid to late 60s, it is probably made with Brazilian rose wood. The value of this guitar without the provinance is in the 6 figures.
The Muhlenberg county thumbpicking style, brilliantly played by lke and made famous by Merle Travis. Pickers the world over owe them an unrepayable debt. Thanks fellas.
In a vine covered shack in the mountains Bravely fighting the battle of time Is a dear one who's weathered my sorrows Tis that silver haired daddy of mine If I could recall all the heartaches Dear old daddy I've caused you to bear If I could erase those lines from your face And bring back the gold to your hair If God would but grant me the power Just to turn back the pages of time I'd give all I own, if I could but atone To that silver haired daddy of mine I know it's too late dear old daddy To repay for those sorrows and cares Though dear mother is waiting in heaven Just to comfort, and solace you there If I could recall all the heartaches Dear old daddy I've caused you to bear If I could erase those lines from your face And bring back the gold to your hair If God would but grant me the power Just to turn back the pages of time I'd give all I own, if I could but atone To that silver haired daddy of mine
I know as a parent, you should not choose a favorite child, I think Phil was Papa's baby boy and Don was his Mama's. Whenever Don mentions some childhood story, he would say Mama did this or that (like her watered down Spaghettj, he says he told her "Mother, you don't need to do that now." He laughed and said, "She still does," Phil used to talk a lot about Papa. He would say Papa taught us this or that They seemed to be great and wonderful parents to two very gifted and talented sons.

Just saw a woman on The Voice singing When Will I Be Loved and that made me happy. She did the Linda Ronstadt version which I prefer and she also mentioned The Everly Brothers which was wonderful because she was young, probably early 20’s and I was surprised that she knew who they were. Didn’t mention that Phil wrote it though.
@@nataliedeshow768 I love Linda's version, she made it her own. I'm partial to the Everly's remake of Lucille for the same reason, or the 4 Seasons version of I've got you under my skin which didn't mirror Sinatra at all. Yes, Phil should have been mentioned as the writer. I will look up the Voice and see if I can find it. Thanks :o)
Tonithenightowl well as a teenager I was a huge Linda Ronstadt fan and I don’t think I knew who The Everly Brothers were at the time but I did love the song!! Such a shame she can’t sing anymore because her voice was so beautiful. I love her version of I Will Always Love You. I like it better than Dolly Parton’s version and she wrote it. Sure wish I could sing like Linda!!
