I just finished several days of using the evernew titanium stove on the AT and I agree that it is a winner. The boil times are better than a trangia (denatured alcohol), it cools quicker, and it weighs nothing. I have tested it with the 91% rubbing alcohol and it works albeit less efficiently. You can snuff it with a tinfoil cap if desired. Thanks for sharing !
I did that today and it does work slowing the boil time (reduced BTU) but I found it still a tad too hot to consider it a simmer. It is a bit tippy in that configuration but it is nice to know it works. I bought mine with the DX stand as well and it is a cool accessory but I didn't find a tremendous performance increase over the cross bar stands.
Specific heat capacity is about half of aluminum and the thermal conductivity is way more than aluminum. That said the Ti will benefit more from standard burn practices for other metal stoves. That moss was a good insulator from conduction that is the enemy of reaching a bloom “prime” in short order. If possible always place an insulator beneath metal alcohol stoves. Air is the best insulator as we know from down feathers in our cold weather gear. Ideally a waffle surface of natural cork, cut like a coaster with a gold Mylar coating. A shiny metal windscreen will also reflect the radiant heat back onto the Ti cook wear, thus reducing heat losses and improve cook times. A bail wire run through the handles will make experiences with wood fires more pleasant too. Cheer to good video!
The Evernew DX stand works as a windscreen for the alcohol stove but is also designed to work as small wood stove, and you can use it as an Esbit stove as well. I carry the Evernew stove with the DX stand and a bottle of Heet. If I run out of fuel, I can go to wood in the same setup.
I've learned that if you put those cross bars down inside your Nano, it puts the stove at the perfect burn height. It also provides wind protection and a back-up fuel source. I love both!
The good points of this set (I have the same set): lightweight, strong, boils quick. Downsides: stove is very thirsty (I can boil twice as much water per ounce of fuel using my Vargo) and the lid doesn't fit the mug so you can't as-efficiently boil it. I take my Evernew on short hikes (carry more fuel) but my Vargo for longer distance trips (I halve fuel weight).
@@justindunlap1235 an efficient stove should do that in about half an ounce of fuel. If you're only going out for a night or two that's not significant. If you're hiking supported for a week or two, it becomes more significant. But yes, I use about an ounce of fuel and I consider that "fuel inefficient, time efficient".
@@darthkek1953 that's exactly how I see it, I'm willing to trade a little efficiency for time, plus I just love how quite alcohol stoves are. On anything longer than a 6-8 day trip I'll usually take my pocket rocket and an 8oz canister.
@@justindunlap1235 I love alcohol stoves too, the quiet and the "real"-ness of them. I don't have a gas stove and will never own one. But my point is you can halve your fuel weight if you take a Vargo stove over the Evernew. Heck, the Vargo weighs so little you can take it TOO. :-D
Ali Leiniö Only bad part to using the cross stand with a trangia is it's not tall enough for best heat output. Use it upside Dow and its too tall. Just make a cross stand for the trangia that holds the pot 1" above the jets.
At the 5:13 mark you said .." I believe you can use other forms of GAS as well ". WRONG..Do Not Use any " Petroleum based GAS " in the stove , just alcohol. Evernew even warns you to only use Denatured Alcohol and that petroleum based fuel can cause injury. If memory serves me it's on the box the stove comes in or the information sheet. I like to use the food grade alcohol in the 153 to 190 proof range whenever possible. Otherwise I use denatured alcohol. The food grade does not have any of the poisons in it like the Denatured or Heet has. If I use denatured then I keep the burner in a zip lock bag when it's not being used and stored inside the pot to stop any contamination.
A nice little stove. Looks like it is substantially thirstier than you believe, though: 3:39 “Fill it up to the top line there” 6:06 "Now my fuel is just about out, after 10 minutes, I filled it halfway; so you could get about 20 minutes if you filled it up further, but I find the halfway mark works good (sic)”
Nice, but you can see how much energy gets lost here (flames licking outside the pot). A wider pot would not waste it. I use the MSR Titanium 2 pot set. Usually only carry the smallest of these, with the Evernew burner and DX2 stand.
I love my TD caldera cone stove with my 550ml ti mug. Like most metho stove (as we call them in Australia) I love how quiet the thing is. A few seconds to setup and to pack up. Thanks for sharing :) Take care. Craig
I love my evened .9l saucepan, my homemade alcohol stove and windscreen/potstand fit inside the pot giving me a cook kit weighing just under 5 oz with 2oz of fuel per day.
I've been on the fence about this cook set for a while now. But I think I'll like having it for kayaking day paddles. I have and 💘 my Trangias (27T STORMCOOKER and 25T STORMCOOKER) as my choices for longer boating and kayaking trips, even for a camping over-nighter. That said, having this small Ti set would be great for hot sammies and or hot chocolate for day outings. Yep, think I'm going to try it. Thanks for showcasing it, nice review.
Yeah, I have a couple of these and it's the quickest alcohol burner to get water to boil. The advantage with the Trangia is that it can cook longer than the Evernew. That's a great light weight setup you demoed.
You CAN set your pot directly on the top jets after the stove blooms, to limit the heat & make your ounce of fuel last longer, much like a simmer ring.
So Ben--I know you own several pieces of kit by Toaks as I do. Would you recommend this brand over Toaks and/or Snow Peak regarding quality, etc.? Just curious. I really like the set-up. Thanks as always.
i've sold my toaks and have since gotten the evernew. i had the snow peak combo and sold that before I even reviewed it. what I like about this is the long handles which neither the toaks or snow peak had.
I dig a hole with my heel and place the burner in the hole, the dirt acts as a wind brake, cant get lighter, and tough, no fiddly moving parts etc I also use small bottles of 30ml each. enough to warm 2 cups.
Thank you for broadcast they have I call it a duck bill silicone pot holder if needed! Appreciate your broadcast and links kudos to you! PS how come the center isn't blocked like when you make a diy one? There's always pros and cons to all cooking! Uhhhgg right!
I purchased the stove, cross stands and the evernew pot set in this video. I also got the firebox titanium gen 2 you showed on another video. These are great for boiling water to make a mountain house or hot chocolate when I was hunting for lunch time. Keeps the weight down on my hunting backpack. My question do you have a favorite or use a titanium spoon or spork? I just use i a plastic msr folding spoon. I’m afraid one day it’ll break on me even though I take my time closing and opening it.
FYI- Silicone is made to be able to be heated, so you probably didn't need to take it off your pot- also, if you left it on, it would probably protect your hands from the heat.
I have a stainless steel cap to extinguish the flame, if necessary, but it's better to calculate how much fuel u need for a boil & just use that. You can pour out & recover the excess, but mostly I let it burn dry 👍
That setup is great, however, using the dx stove kit with the included 400 or 450ml pot works better in the wind. It is so lightweight it makes a great versatile daypack stove for tea or coffee. I also like the fact if you need to you can use the stand as a great wood stove as well.
Yeah this is not too efficient because you waste fuel compared to a trangia that can store. But the trangia is so heavy. I think the Chinese copies are aluminum so that's an alternative. I'm thinking myself to make a cat food can which is ultra light and very cheap to make.
The Evernew is light, but that’s partly because its incomplete. Theres no screw on lid and no snuff/simmer lid. Pouring spirit back into a bottle after every use is messy, and putting the thing out is a faff.
Great review Ben! Wow! That would be absolutely awesome light weight cooking set for any go bag or emergency kit. I have used the GSI mugs for quite a while and liked them a lot but that would be even better option. Although replacing my GSI mugs in my kits with those would turn bit pricey though :( Thank you for the great tip, i had never even heard of the brand Evernew. Big thumbs up Ben!
Um. Evernew makes their titanium goods out of .3mm stock. That's *thinner* than most of the other stuff out there. That's definitely not "more heavy duty than other brands".
The Trangia simmer cover can be purchased separately and used on this stove, but not with this cross stand.i use a wider triangle stand and this stove with the Trangia simmer cover if I'm bringing a small fry pan or pot that needs simmering ✌️
Geo Peppe $40-$50 is worth it!! You'll never use any stove other than a trangia and the evernew for alcohol stoves. No more pop can stoves unless you make something for a specific purpose.
What he didn't tell you. - With this stove you have to burn all the fuel. There is no way of pouring it out. There is no way of capping it. - You have to extinguish the flame before adding more fuel.
Living Survival I must have 6 or 8 myself, starting with Robs canteen cup set up all the way up to Toaks. I spend more time trying to pick my kit that packing. Enjoyed the review.
This set is garbage. The two piece pot stand is awesome though. Use it with the original brass Trangia burner for best result. The fit is even better on the Trangia.
Most reviewers seem to be fixated with how quickly they can boil water. This one is no different. Very little attention is paid to actual cooking which requires a lower level of heat energy over a longer period of time.
