I gets under my skin everytime i think about Mark and Sosa. Those 2 alone brought back baseball from the dead after the strike. MLB and their cronies used them and turned their backs on them afterwards. Sad just sad.
Yea I agree. And you know whats the irony of that era...now MLB juiced their baseballs so that there would be more homeruns. Many of those pop flies are now going into the bleachers. Also, the fact that the Commissioner and those in power allowed the Astros cheat their way to take the WS trophy with virtually zero punishment on any player. Makes me sick.
I still cant get over Big Mac crying when he got questioned by CONGRESS (a bunch of losers to begin with - that was total BS) - BASEBALL was saved by Mac and Sosa - no one had their backs - Mac and Sosa, Rose should be in the hall of fame - (Rose was greatest player i EVER saw play and Im 71 now - Mantle my all time favorite player but ROSE beats him - but as a person Rose SUCKS. And another thing that bugs me - how come NO ONE has copied Roses batting stance? He bent over which gave him a lower strike zone and he had over 4000 hits - hello............copy it morons.
Fantastic list of Hof'er's rookie card's Chris... It's a shame that lots of these rookie card's are painfully undervalued and should be worth much more... Awesome job again... Stay safe homie..👍💞🔥⚾😷
Crime Dog belongs in the hall. I mean c’mon, they put Harold Baines in. Kept it clean during all the steroid use and this is what he gets. So much for integrity.
I agree. He needs to be in the Sports Hall of Fame if not baseball’s. He put on the single greatest hitting performance I have ever seen at a game - 3 HRs in one game. Unfortunately, he broke his collar bone diving for a ball in the outfield before he got a chance at HR #4 (which I am certain he would have gotten - and it would have been better, or at least rarer, than seeing a perfect game!) Side note - the player that hit the ball Bo dived for was Deion Sanders - who got an inside the park HR on that play. The other great two sport player - but not as good as Bo! 1989 Yankee Stadium - probably can verify it somewhere. It was truly unbelievable.
Bo Jackson doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame, never mind that he's not even eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame. He only played parts of 8 seasons. Heck, he played less than 700 games in the major leagues. Was he a good player? Sure. Is he HoF material? Not even close. A career WAR of 8.3 doesn't get you into Cooperstown. And yes, I saw him play.
Yes to Sheff - then you’d have one of the greatest 2-3-4s in the lineup on the show: Gwynn, Sheffield & McGriff. Early 90s Padres - that was exciting to watch!
THanks for the content .my gf and I watch all the time . In case of an accidental gun cleaning incident .she has been directed to contact my sister's .corner. morgue then you IN THAT ORDER . for this massive collection I have meticulously curated .to the best of my rain man esq.autism. I have even given up on sleep to keep sorting by player or sport . .thanks Chris.
Would be nice if the voters can look past the politics this year and just let Schilling in finally. Great stats considering he was both a reliever and starter in this career. Certainly had a lot of big moment in the playoffs.
There must be some evil collector-Investor-dealers out there screaming at Chris 'Stop telling people how to make money at this....I want it all....ALL OF IT!!!! It's the only thing I can think of.....This channel is awesome for learning about the hobby, and just for interesting stories about how some of the larger deals he's done have worked out, and how to spot red flags and how to take preventive measures when dealing in person to avoid endangering yourself, or your money.
Stellar content! Most of us probably have plenty of these in our collections, and you definitely see all of these if looking to buy individual or collections. As someone who has been into card collecting for 30+ years and now trying to maximize the value of my massive stash and the current boom, I find all of your videos to be well made, interesting, and extremely relevant to how I’m currently thinking and approaching things. Kudos to you for bringing it all together in these vids! Oh, and more vids of some of your best or most interesting collection purchases and maybe a peek into how you organize (physically and electronically). A look at print runs (if you can get them) and overall value at the set level for a decade or two would be fascinating. Good work sir!
Thank you and really happy to hear that. I will try to post a buying story every other week or so as I have about 10 more that I think would make good stories. An Organizing video is a good idea...
An auto Jose Canseco sold for $50 bucks on eBay. Haha that’s hilarious. I actually thought about picking it up. But he’s such a jerk I was like nahhhhh rather buy packs.
What a great video, Chris. A great job highlighting all the biggies of my childhood collecting era. Can't include all the then-hot non-HOFer rookie cards (Clark, Coleman, Joyner, etc.), but I might suggest adding the 1984 Donruss Joe Carter rookie to this list. Curious, do you use PSA 9 prices instead of PSA 10 prices as not to skew the data too much? Using PSA 10 prices would give us slightly different results, as I am sure you know. Thanks again for the great content!
Appreciate that. Ah I forgot the 84 Joe Carter, I actually meant to include him. Yeah the reason I use PSA 9 instead of PSA 10 is for exactly the reason you said. You'll end up getting weird results because of the pop report, especially if you are ranking the values.
@@collectorinvestordealer Inteestingly, I think the only card on the list with 0 PSA 10 pop is the 1981 Fernando Valenzuela Topps. There are over 150 Raines of that year, but no Fernandos. Maybe that has to do with where he was on the cut sheet. Not sure.
Great content. Obviously can only have so many honorable mentions but someone that always gets left out (likely due to implications in Mitchell report and balco), is Gary Sheffield. Only 1 of 4 players in history with 500 hr and 250 SB. Others in that group? Mays, Bonds and A rod. (Interesting only 1 clean out of the group). Also hit at a 292 clip for his career. First ballot numbers of course without the steroid implications
Chris - Once the card companies realized their over-production mistake of the late 80's and early 90's; they tried to make up for it with the premium and mega premium sets (which we thought $5 for 5 cards was insane). Around when did the card companies finally back off production numbers for their base sets? Keep this style of video coming - super educational!
Great question... Im not actually sure how the production levels worked. I imagine they slowly phased them down in the 90s as people lost interest in base cards and building sets
Great nostalgia for those that were chasing these rookies. I still have around 30 86 Topps Traded John Kruk cards. I was convinced he was the next Babe Ruth. Not a bad career but nowhere near the Babe.
The only thing Ruth and Kruk had in common was that they were both sloppy looking fat guys. But Kruk never showed any indication that he'd develop into a power hitter of any sort, much less babe ruth
I started collecting in ‘72, but really hit hard from ‘79-‘84 then tailed off until ‘90. I had all of those except the Yount. All but the Brett came new from packs and I had multiples of each one. I had at least 6 Hendersons. Hard times hit and I started selling them off in ‘91 to pay bills. I got way more than I paid, but not book at the time. Definitely nowhere near these numbers.
I have over 60k cards with majority around late 80s and early 90s. I have a couple hundred from 56 - 58. Mostly baseball. I did get into football, basketball and hockey cards too. I’d say around early 2000s I took them to a card shop and the owner didn’t even want to look at them and said I’ll give you like an adsurbed number like $150 dollars for everything. I said are you joking? Put them back in my car and took off. I have them all organized according to brand, sport, year and numerically in card set boxes. My better cards are in binders with glossy plastic sleeves. They been sitting in my closet for years now. I see these videos and card collector magazines with price guides and moral of the story is they are only worth what someone is willing to pay. I’m in my 40s now and I’ll probably have them until my time on this earth is over. So many summers spent collecting and organizing. I’m not sure they’ll ever be a price I’d be willing to part with.
Watching this video and seeing Conseco’s 1986 card reminded me of a game I saw at Fenway Park. The Sox decided to put Conseco in to pitch (I guess he did some pitching in the minors) and he blew his arm out.Eventhough I was at the game I missed it as I brought my wife and she wanted to leave early.
- Loved this 👍 Im surprized Orel Hershier wasnt an honnorable mention... Not saying there of mention but when I collected names like Will Clark, Eric Davis, Wally Joyner, Jim Abbot, Mark Grace were all the rage... Great memories & Great list!!! 🤘😎
Not quite the 80's but I, on a whim, bought two '92 Leaf Set packs from a shop near my home and ended up pulling a Pedro Martinez rookie, which I guess is the best possible card from that set lol. Glad I dont need to pick up any more packs haha.
Were the Topps Tiffany cards produced at the same time the (much) more common regular issues were produced? I don’t recall hearing about Tiffany until much later when everyone talked about how oversaturated the production of the Junk Wax era was.
Yes, they were produced at the same time and only distributed to dealers in factory set form (no packs, etc). They are extremely rare compared to the regular issue cards (print runs are like 5,000 or 10,000 total sets, whereas the regular sets are supposedly in the millions
Great job on the list as always Chris. I didn't check prices, but I thought the 1989 UD Griffey in a PSA 9 was selling for $200+. Was cool seeing all the RC's together. Would love to see a 1990s version as well. Thanks as always for sharing brother.
Poor Edgar with the lowest buy-in for a HOF rookie. Makes me wonder if he (as of today) tops the "bottom" of that list of all HOFers... Throwing out some love for the pure longevity guys. Julio Franco might still be playing somewhere and I grabbed his '83 RCs for my PC back in 2007 when he was still in the majors. Also did the same with Jamie Moyer ('87) when he was still playing in 2012.
9:20 Don't forget O-Pee-Chee, Barry Bonds 87 OPC 9's are going for 1500; a 10 went for $55k! It's gotten to the point I can't buy raw at a good price. Later, they forget OPC on Randy Johnson; that's also super expensive as a 9.
So many of these cards going for sub $100. I know, coming into the junk era and all, but still that seems like a bargain for a lot of those guys. When I was collecting the first time as a kid, I was 10 in 1994, and was always just blown away by how consistently Boggs (and Gwynn) hit 300 back then. I wasn't like a stat nerd back then, but I knew most guys couldn't hit for .300, and most who did only did it a time or two, but those guys, they were a league of their own for consistent hitting. Love that original 84 and 85 topps design. They clean up really nice in 2019 and 2020 Chrome sets, too. Love them.
Boggs and Gwynn... if you look at their stats, they just lead the league in batting every year in the 80s, amazing. A league of their own for consistent hitting is exactly right.
Hi Crystal hello it's me that's my trademark name on Facebook I have just discovered a whole bunch of 1975 Baseball cards and their in perfect condition, I really enjoy your show I'm not an expert but I'm just as good learning all. I can. I have a lot of postage stamps and they are so good I researched them for months. Anyway I can go on forever I better catch this Shore I'm learning and I have a lot baseball cards mint condition I'm over all over 5 in Virginia in May 11th you can tell when I voice type you almost have to someone's like a secret code
Question... I have the 1985 Topps complete set. Is it more profitable to sell it as a set, or to sell the Mark Mcgwire card and other singles by themselves?
Yeah a bunch of people mentioned Sheffield, I probably should have included him. I only mentioned Vizquel because I think he is likely to get in at some point. The baseball's best could have been considered, as could have OPC, Leaf, Sportflics, etc, just had to draw the line somewhere.
Chris, this was Great stuff my friend! Hey, I made a new video tonight that you are mentioned in in great detail. I just wanted to give you heads up. Obviously, it's a positive mention. Take care!
Interesting that the Topps Tiffany cards are out performing the more popular rookies from a few years ago. The 1987 Donruss Maddux and the 1987 Fleer Glossy Bonds seemed to be their most popular rookies twenty years ago.
I bought a 1987 Kevin Seitzer Fleer Update at a card shop in Rapid City in 1988 and got a grab bag for free. In the grab bag was the Cal Ripken Topps Traded! I still have both cards.
I got a case of 1982 Fleer back in the day and there was a glitch where I got 3 of certain cards in several packs, including 3 Cal Ripken Jr. cards in 1 pack! And 7 total in the box. I remember I was very disappointed I didn't get any Pete Rose cards as he was my favorite player.
Cool video! That 88 Donruss, The Rookies E. Martinez card is an uncorrected error too. It’s M’s reliever, Edwin Nunez on the front. Sadly, Edgar never got the respect he deserved from his rookie year all the way until the HOF.
I have a Topps Mattingly rookie and am looking to sell it. What are you willing to pay, if interested? I actually have about 100 different Mattingly cards(Topps, Fleer and Donruss) from his career as well, if that intices you. Let me know what you think
Dang I'm gonna have to check to see if I have any Tiffany's. Were these modern reprints of old card sets? I don't remember them from back then. But when I looked it up said Bowman was glossy on front & printed on white card stock instead of grey... Not sure on all the other brands. I collected Ken Griffey Jr & as many rookies as I could. Even have a stack of Ken Griffey Jr. Minor League or College cards or something? Wonder what those are worth. Plus how much does the grading cost? Just hope squirrels & raccoons haven't made a nest out of my collection in the side attic that I can't get to unless I unpack like 3 closets to get to it.
The Tiffanys were only distributed to dealers in set form and they were very limited compared to the base sets. Currently, grading costs around $20 per card from most of the major grading companies.
@@collectorinvestordealer Thanks! I have some unopened sets, but I doubt they're dealer sets. Wonder if they Grade unopened sets, if they still have the original plastic cellophane on them... or worth more to part out the set. I need to go buy a price guide.
Another great video. I never knew where the Topps Tiffany cards came from until I heard you mention in another video that they went to dealers. I remember Fleer glossy cards from back in the day, but don’t recollect the Score glossy. How did those go out?? Anyway, I appreciate the content, as always 👍
This video was great! Very helpful. Can you do one for the 1990’s as well? More difficult probably with more products released. Also, apologies if you already did one. Thanks
McGriff also had a 86 Leaf, I built many of those sets, boxes were much cheaper then the Donruss. Now as I continue to watch the video your not including Leaf or OPC, they're definitely more rare then their American counterpart. I seem to remember on the Donruss wax cases they included a few Leaf boxes in a case, can't remember the year or years this was done. 1984 Fleer update were the only cards I ever sold from my collection.
Yeah I didnt include Leaf or OPC since the werent US releases, but they are certainly legit and youre right, rarer. I dont know of the Leaf boxes in the Donruss cases, hadnt heard that...
@@collectorinvestordealer the more I think about it, i seem to remember the 88 Donruss offered a 10 box wax case which were divided into 8 Donruss and 2 Leaf boxes. 87 might of been the same way, can't remember for sure. I think 86 was offered in 10 box cases of only Leaf. For 85, my memory is lost for those.
Thanks. I thought this format was awesome. I bought 3 cards off this list from this video, but don’t really have interest in the Tiffany variations and would love to see the second most valuable after Tiffany.
