I wish you could have experienced it, but there was a place called Readers in Westland on Warren. I'm 48 and my older cousin used to take me there and it was mind-bending. I was feverishly trying to collect all of the Godzilla Marvel comics at that time. Such great times in the early 80s.

Mike's comics used to have an insane amount of back issues. I used to go there a lot as a kid and picked up many comics through out my time growing up. It's really cool to see the small shop I loved, get some love. I don't live around there anymore so I don't go there as often but I'm glad to see it's standing, and in a new spot it looks like! Growing up I moved a lot all over Michigan. It’s a HUGE wave of nostalgia seeing so many of these shops again. Thank you for doing this. So many good memories.

My dad used to run Classic Comics & Movies in Livonia back in the 90s and early 00s. He was the Comic Book Guy to many people, even interviewed by the Free Press when comic-related news would make regular headlines (death of Superman, etc.). It's closed now, but growing up around all of this has made me very happy to see that brick & mortar comic shops are still alive.

Mike's comics is great. Correction on the video, he is located in New Baltimore. I like how you emphasized stores leaning into TCG's because that store does both well. I've been in there doing deals on cards, and someone would walk in picking up comics. Great mix and solid environment.

Green Brain was my shop before I moved. The owners Dan and Katie are great people and do a lot to promote comics. They have a great Free Comic Day event.

Mike's Comics in New Baltimore has been my store for over 20 years! So happy you gave him such a great review! He got a little shafted when Comic City moved in right down the road. Both are great shops, but Mike's always got my business!

I used to live in Dearborn and Greenbrain was my go to especially after the comic archive shut down :(. They also host a ton of events.

Time Travelers opened in 1987. The same month and year I was born. In my hometown. Not only does it kook the same as it did the first day I went in 1992, it's the same vibe. Its the best comic shop ive ever been to, and i ooay all ny tcgs there for locals even though I live an hour away now.

This was a really good video! Some may underestimate the amount of time and work that was involved.

When i was deepest in my comic buying days I went to Green Brain every single week because i worked nearby, and they are INCREDIBLE. So friendly and genuinely interested in helping you navigate the store.

I started at comix corner (Fraser) as a comic collector as a kid with my dad. They used to have a buy by the pound discount section that was amazing. I got almost whole series that way.

I am very surprised that you did not cover Guild of Blades in Clawson, maybe it was for one of the last reasons listed but that would be surprising to me. I'm not the biggest comic book nerd so maybe they don't qualify for one of the reasons given to determine if they are in deed a comic shop but again I would be very surprised to find that out. They have a very large selection of comics, new and old, statues, super hero action figures, Funco pops, manga, rpgs, miniatures, play areas, community boards, email groups, etc. Hope they get covered in your next video of MI shops.

Damn it, now I’ve gotta go back to vault of midnight 😭. I’m moving away for the first time at the end of this month, and I’m really gonna miss VoM- it was my first comic store, and a lot of my current obsessions started there. Thank you for reminding me

I’ve been to many of the shops around metro Detroit and I found Big Ben’s in Allen Park to be by far the best! They have the best selection of high end back issues. Definitely my favorite!

Excellent video! Comix Corner is my home shop, but I’ve been to many of the others in Metro Detroit. State of Comics in Plymouth is one of my favorites and is always worth the trip!

I got PTSD after going to Time Travelers. They had boxes stacked upon boxes so high that I vowed to never go there again. Then I forgot about it and accidentally walked back in it. It was much more organized but the PTSD kicked in and I walked out. Big Bens is perhaps my favorite shop.

Prime Time is in Lake Orion, 20 miles south of Lapeer where you said it was located. But Mike didn't let you film inside so I guess he gets what he deserves 😅

Amazing video. A lot of really great looking shops that often feel like they reflect the areas they’re in; shaped by the community. and damn are they big out in Ypsi and Ann Arbor. My local shop is A to Z and I was curious how it’d stack up against some of the flashier stores I haven’t been to. Exciting that it’s up there with best as far as having whatever you need. I’m looking forward to checking some of these out! Green Brain is new to me and nearby, and the Comix Corners definitely look worth the drive as someone who mainly does nostalgia buying - filling out series I either loved or wanted to have in the 90s. Always excited to pull up old Valiant comics or weird horror themed stuff I haven’t seen before in the discount and older back issue bins.

Prime Time Comics and Card is actually in downtown Lake Orion, which is about 20ish minutes south of Lapeer. Also it's definitely more of a card store over comics, but still has a decent comic selection. I think a 14/30 is reasonable.

Stores I wish you got to see that are sadly long gone, Comics Kingdom and Comics Archives. Two of the earliest and legendary stores in Detroit

22:28 Technically they've only been there for about a year, but they were in the same strip mall before that, closer to the Outback Steakhouse. It's my go to local shop.

IIRC, there is another just a bit South of Flat Rock in Monroe. Can't recall the name but I think it's in their old mall.

oh i'm so glad i got this video recommended to me! i found so many new stores to go to, and i'm glad to see mike's comics here! i used to play dnd there and mike introduced me to so many new titles :)

I've got a soft spot in my heart for A to Z. My dad knew the owner and love collecting baseball cards, so he'd take me for an hour or two while he searched for stuff, and I'd browse the comics. The owner always made me repeat "Readers make leaders" whenever I went up to the register. I'm not too into the comic scene anymore, but I go into VoM Ann Arbor and Fun 4 All all the time for gaming and graphic novel stuff. I like Vault of Midnight, just with they had more of a Magic scene or a gaming area. State of Comics really impressed me when I discovered it. Downtown Plymouth was my high school hangout spot, and my friends and I would have never left that place if it existed then. Really cool spot with something for everyone.

Thus is crazy! Bro is really at my local comic book shops

My opinion lol Liberty Comics deserves a 5 for organization. Back issues are organized alphabetically and numerically with dividers that have the comic books logo on it. Maybe I’m one-sided because I have OCD lol but it’s nice to be able to go in and immediately find what I’m looking for without any hassle.

As someone who's been driving around Michigan trying to complete runs of DC Comics Presents, Marvel Team Up and Brave and the Bold (50+) this series has been incredibly useful.

Great video! Hilarious that 2/3 of my personal LCSs wouldn’t let you film, Comics N’ More (Chris is great and was always finding vintage toys/chatchkis for my collection - also I had a pull box there since I was 7) and Prime Time (it was the closest shop when I lived in the Oxford/Orion area so I could get my monthly fix) but Comix Corner in Fraser has impeccable service. Dan is always great to talk to and is pretty knowledgeable on what is going on currently in comics. There’s a rad history there too because he’s a second generation owner as he took over for his dad. Also has a strong memory when it comes to variants if that’s your thing. Also love Time Travelers (that was always a regular haunt once I started collecting) and so many more that you listed and sadly, the ones that are no longer with us like Dave’s Comics and Detroit Comics. Definitely appreciate your attention to detail and I’ll definitely take you up on some of your recommendations! Can’t wait to see what the comic shops in Georgia are like!

You missed a shop when you were at A to Z. It’s so stupid, so I don’t blame you for missing it, but 2 miles down Ford rd, there’s an Ace Hardware. The back half of the store is a comic book shop, as advertised on the sign. I have no idea why this is a thing, but I bought three issues of Task Force Z a couple years ago there.

After moving to DC, I can’t help but to think how spoiled as a comic book fan I was living in Detroit and having access to all those stores (many now gone but replaced with high quality new ones). I’d be happy with half of the amount of choices where I am at now.

Rabbit Hole in Hartford michigan on the west side of the state is one of the most organized stores I’ve been to and good prices

As a Detroiter, this seems really goddamn hard specifically because Comics Stores are always tucked in the back and disappear pretty quickly unfortunately

To your question: “What’s the point of having a brick and mortar if you sell online?” the answer is buying. When you’re an online dealer only, you have to constantly be searching for people who are selling their collections. When you have a brick and mortar, it’s not uncommon for someone to just walk in with a box of Silver Age books.

I've lived in Jackson Michigan all of my life and Nostalgia Ink in downtown Jackson is a great comic shop if you haven't been there yet..

I can't remember the last time that anyone has said anything good about Fun 4 All. So many people refer to it as "Fun 4 None".

I really admire the amount of work you put into this! It was so fun to watch! It looks like a lot of work, but a blast to do too. I'm not in Michigan very often, I have a childhood friend up there and next time I visit I've got a few spots I might need to look into... :) It makes me wonder what rating you'd give the comic shop by me! No joke, it's where Robbie from Pop Culture Philosophers is. He used to run their RU-vid channel before he moved onto his own.

I love this series, and this channel in general. Those stores are heaven. The "No Loitering" sign seemed odd. Comic stores can be a great community service. Kids can have a safe place to wait for their parents after school. surrounded by synapse-sparking ideas. Maybe they see someone playing a board game and it looks like fun. Maybe they buy snacks and drinks while they hang out. Or they fall in love with 40K watching someone paint a marine. Maybe they get addicted to Magic, or decide Harley Quinn is hot and get a couple of issues. Loitering might be an opporunity, imo. It's win-win. And no one is going to judge them or ridicule them, because everyone is a nerd in those shops.:)
