It is absolutely staggering how effective the visuals are for a game that is, for fuck sakes, going on 15 years old soon. Just like you say, it's the lighting system and art direction. F.E.A.R. is another prime example of dynamic lighting making old games look fantastic to this day.
Fear and Dead Space went to the same school of brilliant use of lighting to hide detail issues. It's brilliant and fantastic and I love revisiting both games randomly all the time
Dead space 1, dead space 2 and dead space 3 are like movies from the same series directed by ridley scott(dead space 1), james cameron (dead space 2), and michael bay(dead space 3).
Dead Space was the same experience I had with Mass Effect. The first 30 minutes made me think I wasn’t going to enjoy the game but at some point I found myself transfixed and so immersed in the world that completing it was the last thing I wanted. In both cases I discovered these games long after they came out so I didn’t have to wait long for the next installment which made the experience even better.
Same mass effect 1 I was like god what is this awful game got it for Christmas. & after a while of playing I didn’t have anything else it became my fav game & little did I know one Of the greatest trilogies of all time.
@@anthonyshanaman5637 tbf trucking has a fatality rate 10 time higher than law enforcement. It's a pretty dangerous job, and most of the time its the people around me that concern me. But yeah, you're right though
When you get past the unfocused plot and the unbalanced action that overwhelmed the horror, the custom guns were fun and the Moons were a good explanation for what the Markers are for and where they came from.
I think the reason 3rd is not that bad is cause is the only one you can play with a friend... I enjoyed the third when with a friend but average when solo.
There are plenty moments in ds3 the devs give the middle finger to the publisher, many moments has as good ambience as the first one and couple of moments that makes no use of the microtransaction guns. Still such a waste of a game.
I think dead space has to have my favorite set of space/Exo suits, because they look like something the would actually be made by the real world in the future. they're not too flashy, they are practical and are made to be used by specific personnel in universe or in this case 1 man with the strongest curb stomp this side of the galaxy
It was definitely a pain on the Xbox 360. Took me maybe a few dozen tries. Dead Space 1 is one of the handful of games that I bothered to 100% the achievements and that was one of the more painful ones.
On the xbox 360 it was a pain in the ass with the controller. In my first playthrough it toom me at least 30 attempts. Second time I managed it fist try
Story time: When Dead Space was popular I only had a Wii. So my gateway into the series was Extraction. I enjoyed it so much I went and bought a 360 just so I could play the main line entries (1&2) at the time.
I do love all the audio/text/video logs in dead space and the notes in resident evil. They just do something special for the atmosphere and the backstory.
I have all of Bioshocks Audio Diaries on my Ipod Classic still on a rainy night putting those on is sometimes a better experience than playing the game itself.
I thought the first dead space was the best. I’m telling you play that game in the dark with the sound up. Still beats a lot of modern scary games in my eyes. The first dead space that is.
One thing I found funny in dead space 2 is how when you go through the unitoligy church there's a room specifically made to screw with you where there are obvious signs it would be a zone for you to fight but on different playthroughs you may or may not even get any enemies
I thought it was cool that the game also insinuates that "killing" necromorphs, doesnt kill them, you incapacitate them. they cannot die unless you burn them to literal ash, or destroy them completely. crazy.
@@AvalancheReviews to hoping they keep him silent in the remake! he had a great personality in the second one (forgetting the third one on purpose). but him being quiet in the first one was more immersive in my opinion!
@@YEETUSDAFEETUS I know this is ancient history now, but since the games come out: Isaac's dialogue was perfect. having him actually say what he needs to do rather than be told by people not in his profession is also good. Edit: Also forgot, isaac actually talking about nicole is great. I never understood how people can say that silent isaac is better, hes not an empty vessel and its not an RPG.
@@AvalancheReviews Dead Space 2 was My first major experience with "Console Exclusivity" And is currently the only video game that I know of that the PC version is incomplete. 360/PS3 Version has loot rooms that are not interactive on PC. DS2 was on the roller coaster that was, at the time. Timed Console/Brand Exclusives or at least the beginning. DS3 obviously was pushing the microtrans/lootbox force feed down your throat so hard. Makes me sad what has become of Visceral. Just another victim of EA's greed. I guess Visceral has shown how you can only kiss ass so much. Feeling that BioWare may be EA's next victim.
Yeah, we see all sorts of awesome new weapons, but at the end of the day, I'm just going to use the Plasma Cutter and maybe the pulse rifle for the weakest enemies.
I actually enjoyed the side missions in DS3, the ones that had a big resource cache at the end, they added to the games world, like investigating the madness of previous victims
Jared man, I feel a little guilty but I put your collection videos on to sleep to at night to, your voice is like a father telling you a bedtime story to me which really helps with my sleep patterns as I otherwise truly struggle with it, so thank very much for all your hard work and I hope you keep doing this kind of content as it's some of my favourite on the platform, I have watched all of your videos and I love them almost as much, keep killing it king 👑
Also the thing that scared me the most was.... THE DOORS, not kidding, the doors terrified me, for one reason alone, they don't say "OPEN" on the door like most games, they say "OPEN?" by turning it into question made my brain consistently go, "wait, am I ready for whatever is behind this door?" That question constantly filled me with dread and fear. It's what alot of people would consider stupid but that's how it was for me.
49:22 yeah there's a cool biology guy called Roanoke Gaming, he actually discussed this and theorized it was the body responding to the stab in the gut first that allowed him to be infected and turned
This is my third favorite in Survival Horror. I absolutely love this series, and I still own all of them physically. I figured EA would bury it, and I was right. Not only did they shut down Visceral, but they also haven't done anything with it. I really loved them as a developer, too bad their publisher is the devil.
I personally loved the daycare center. No dialogue, uncomfortably happy atmosphere, hallucinations, and the unnerving music box like ambience in the background really tied it all together.
19:05 clearly wasn't playing on the hardest difficulty. On this setting you are most likely to get ammo and credits. If you're on your last plasma cartridge. It is likely the game will give you ammo. However if your doing well with ammo you're more likely to get credits. Which can be used to buy health packs or ammo or suites.
Dead Space 2 is my absolute favorite. DS 1 definitely had more of a horror focus, and is my go to for being spooked. But ,like you said, 2 was the perfect balance of horror and action. I've finished the game over 17 times and on every difficulty.
I remember the first time I found your channel was when I was playing Ring of Red and watched your review of it and your views pretty much mirrored my own. Watching your series of Dead Space reviews reminds me of that feeling.
I don’t think there’s a RU-vidr that puts so much detail and passion in to their description of game reviews also I think your voice is the perfect tone for the commentary over the video. It never gets boring and keeps me watching till the end. After I watch these retrospectives I have to go out and get the games myself to see if I agree and feel the same way about the games. It’s costing me a fortune especially trying to get the original Silent Hill versions and Resident Evil series on the multiple platforms, luckily Dead Space seems fairly cheap on all platforms at the minute! Keep up the excellent work and consider Gears of War and Hitman retrospectives as a different journey to take as I’d be interested in your thoughts on such game series?👍
34:15 - Can we talk about how pants-wetting the Guardian enemies in the first game were? I know there's an easy way to beat them with that secondary shot from the Line Gun, but still, doesn't take away from the sheer horror of their appearance and mannerisms in my opinion. To me they are to this day the most terrifying enemy in horror game history.
God this series scarred me as a kid. My dad kinda gave up gaming but dead space 1 got him to pick it up. I watched him play through every second of it (against my mother’s wishes) and it single handedly started my love for horror. Nothing else (movies like the exorcist included) causes the fear dead space did. I will always hold this game as the best cosmic horror game ever made.
@@ryszakowy nah, mass effect remaster was really well done so this would be too. They’re even remaking the first dead space so it shows they still care about the franchise somewhat.
Just checked out the web comic for dead space ignition on your recommendation and it seems that all along Franco was on a mission to free Isaac in case of a widespread outbreak. He's actually the dude who is freeing Isaac from the ward at the very beginning of Dead Space 2 which means that he knew his mission all along and those cryptic messages were from somebody who was working within the psych ward who was also taking part in breaking our resident necromorph terminator out of holding
Also, I hate to break it to you, but this game sreies IS survival horror. It has ammo management, ways to kill enemies while conserving ammo, and even ways of avoiding encounters altogether by running away from enemies to survive. Both Resident Evil and Silent hill have this and they are both considered survival horror. If you consider Resident Evil a survival horror, then you also consider Dead Space a survival horror. Dead Space was made by the devs as quite literally a Resident Evil in space.
I love your videos, despite the fact that I feel your description of "survival horror" is so specific that it is more of a sub-sub-sub genre than genre. I personally don't think linear vs non-linear is relevant to a game being survival or horror. Also, for the survival aspect of any game, I feel that management of limited resources is the key feature of being survival or not; While how you are rewarded with those limited resources is not defining of if it is survival or not, just which flavor it is. Minutia aside, I love your reviews and have very similar taste in game (despite loathing tank controls to a point I can only play some RE games sparingly now that we have, what I feel, are better options). Keep up the good stuff!
Not sure why you’d make such a lengthy and firm point about the Survival Horror label, just because it doesn’t line up with your own personal and seemingly very stringent definition (even calling others ‘verifiably false’). Survival Horror is defined as a sub-genre of action and horror where the gameplay is designed to add to the tension through resource management and limitations to movement/combat capabilities. Puzzles can also be used to progress to new areas. That’s it. Dead Space has all of this, just because it isn’t hardcore with it or a direct clone of the original RE doesn’t make it ‘false’ to call it Survival Horror.
I know this video is 3 years old but I love how below the sections of the video at the lower left, you have the marker translations as well. Great attention to detail on a video about a series with astounding attention to details
Hot damn, brother. Takes me 3 months to put out a 17 minute video and here's this feller, with like 5 hours worth of video per month. You have to have an editor I refuse to believe you're a one man task force.
Dead Space is a survival horror game by definition. Limited resources, tons of enemies, and an end goal to survive and escape the situation. Playing it on easy mode will absolutely leave you with excess supplies. Its still a survival horror game lol
The DeadSpace game that was released on ios (no longer available) was a great experience. They some how made 3rd person gameplay from console translate well to touchscreen. Plus had a great twist/connection to DeadSpace 2.
I have no words that describes my anticipation and excitement for the upcoming "The Callisto Protocol". This is such a great video to watch up till its release. Thank you for the effort and time putting into this video, you're the best!
Long video, quality intro, and a mention of Future Cop LAPD as "must play material" are more than enough to make me love you. I didn't think anyone remembered that gem.
Gotta be honest the Dead Space Remake does an amazing hat trick where it takes an already amazing game And improves upon it in a surprising and significant way. IT’s additions give significant background and context to the Ishimura, the Aegis 7 incident, unitology, and Isaac and Nicole’s background and relationship everything is more fleshed out in the right ways.
One of my most fond experiences was when I kept dieing to a wall guardian at the end of a hallway, so I used kineses to move some crates, and made my own wall to hide behind and shoot around it. Never felt more accomplished when I finally got through it.
1:21:50 it's actually my favorite game in the series heheh, only way to truly experience if you love to fry your nerves a little, play it on hardcore, that's a true horror/test of mental fortitude experience
Tbh the survival horror title for dead space is accurate depending on how you look at it. Being that Isaac is a survivor or is surviving the events of the dead space games
A friend and I blew through the third game together, I played as Carver and when it got to that "specific" area It took me a while before I realised what was going on, I just assumed things were going on for both of us. As a result we both streamed the game so we could see each others perspective. All in all I really enjoyed Dead Space 3.
People hate on it but it was honestly the most fun to replay over and over. The weapon customization and unlockable Devil Horns added so much replay value and fun. Especially the chipsets you get towards the end... You can let your weapon imagination run wild.... I know i did!
the one thing that bothers me about the dead space remake is how the very first suit that Isaac wears looks nothing like the original versions suit. They made it look too "cool" when I liked the 'fish out of water wearing my pajamas' suit that isaac first starts with.
I just found your channel. You make really special videos. The amount of time and effort it must take is very respectable. I enjoy hearing the reviews and the videos are also soothing to listen to when I can’t sleep. It might sound weird, but I appreciate how you don’t use really loud sounds from the games during the videos. You have a relaxing voice and it lets me actually fall asleep listening to them.
Couple notes on your puker and tripod rants. 1. You can kinesis the vomit glob and throw it back. It insta-kills him and most necromorphs. It's crucial in hard core. 2. The tripod's lunge is easily avoidable by running forward and off to the side. You can also stasis it mid-air and then run. 3. The lunge is triggered by being too far away from it. It won't trigger at close or mid range. It's a punishment for trying to, for lack of a better term, "pussy out" the fight.
"Hurr durr, IT"S NOT SURVIVAL HORROR!" "Ok, define survival horror then?" "NO! I DON"T WANNA!" Dude, if you're gonna bitch about the definition of a genre, then at least OFFER UP a definition that you consider accurate. You have no reason to complain about a definition of a genre, if you yourself CAN NOT define it!
49:20 according to the wiki, the necromorph virus can affect living hosts, only if it is injected directly into the brain somehow, which is what we saw in the cutscene lol. I didn’t know if anyone else pointed it out but, I figured i would.
Man, I always feel so bad on Isaac. He always suffered through out the entire franchise; traumatized, backstabbed, physical and psychologically tortured, always getting in a never sequence of unfortunate events and the best ending for him is to put him out his misery :( Is such a tragic character because he never got a happy ending
For the survival horror "rant". Listen I get it man but language changes as do what defines a genre. The problem with calling dead space just a horror game is it's too broad. Calling it a 3rd person shooter with horror elements just seems like too much and implys it's more a shooter then anything. That being said all genres are losing their meaning like RPG and action adventure. I to this have no idea what they even mean anymore tbh.
I feel like you're wrong on your point of survival horror being used as a catch all, like the points you apply to others apply more accurately to you. Dead space involves limited ammunition and health drops, with segments that are hard to Survive unless you've been managing your resources in this 9/10 Horror game. The games about surviving some horror with resource management, it is like textbook definition survival horror. Saying the label being applied here is wrong implies that it means something else for YOU to arbitrarily slap onto any particularly well made horror game you like.
I recently played the PS Vita version, basically the mobile game ported fully to the Vita with full controller input and optional touch screen controls. It's a decent game all things considered. It obviously doesn't touch the full game but for a dumbed down spinoff 3D mobile game from the early days of mobile gaming it's a decent experience.
and years and years later we're still waiting for a new Motor Storm, Crimson Skies, Bloody Roar, and a host of other things we really should have something more of, and yet not even anything functional of spiritual successors that could hope to replace them. Gaming has gotten pretty bad and filing down the same old tired IP's that have been bled dry and Fortnite children.
I was doing a Plasma Cutter only on the hardest difficulty, I think. I'm not sure if I completed it though. Was on my 360. Dead Space is definitely one of my favorite games every. It's almost perfect in my eyes. The story, the sound design, art direction, gameplay, it's just so good. I was on the edge of my chair all the time.
On the hardest level of difficulty I’d say you could definitely argue deadspace is a survival horror game, but only on the hardest difficulty. Granted it’s been years, but I remember always being low or out of ammo and barely having any heals.
Its still a survival horror game either way, the definition of 'survival horror' offered in the video is so specific and far removed from what is commonly meant by survival horror (including..you know..the DICTIONARY definition of survival) that its pretty useless to anyone.
The Dead Space mobile game is actually pretty strange, in the sense that it’s not a port of DS1, but actually it’s own unique game. It uses a lot of assets from DS1, but the story is entirely new. It’s been YEARS since I played it, but it ties into DS2 and sorta elaborates on the events leading up to The Sprawl getting overrun. I was a dumb kid when I played this game (12 or so), but I remember it being a sorta simple but full dead space game. It was pretty repetitive, but for an IOS game in 2011 is was about as much as you could ask for. It kinda sucks it’s near unplayable today.
Biggest mistake is using the underbarrel weapon for dmg. I beat DS3 all difficulties except the last 1. My general load outs were smg/assault rifle + shotgun for cc knockback and rail accelerator + kinetic force shotgun again for knockback ot dmg. Dismember at range...knockback when too close dismember while on floor.....rince n repeat 😁
I think the force gun works more like a shotgun than the line gun but all you need is the plasma cutter. The plasma cutter is my favorite video game weapon.
i would say the thing i love the most about the game is how almost all the weapons are tools that you can notably tell what they're for. The plasma cutter seems to be for cutting small things, while the nail gun is for as its name suggest shooting a nail at a high velocity. I also love the inspiration the game has from old diving suits and event horizon. But i would have to say the atmosphere for the game is so immersing
I was lucky enough to play and complete the dead space mobile game that was tied into the overall story and explains how the aliens took of the sprawl in dead space 2
In these reviews, I noticed you never brought up the secret unlockables via other game saves and such. I think that's kind of important to mention if you review these games. However, this was a good review. You earned my subscription, so looking forward to watching some of your other videos.
Listening to your voice and screams of reanimated people is oddly soothing to my insomnia, not sure what that says about myself but thank you for your quality content and great reviews. Keep them up ♡
I got the platinums on all these games- DS2, talk about ridiculous! Play on Hard with only 3 saves allowed. I messed up the eye part and lost about 4.5 hours of progress
This was amazing! You reignited my love for the franchise, played through 1 and 2 back in the day on PS3 and loved both games. Never touched 3, might reconsider. Just bought DS1 for 4€ on Steam yesterday and already blasted through the first two chapters…it feels as good as it did…omg…13 years ago?!?!? 😳
As someone who played through all 3 mainline games, while 3 is nowhere near DS2, it is a phenomenal game. Co-op as Carver really helps the experience, but is much more of a challenge comparatively.
