I love both (maybe because both are GREAT)! I would also add Milo Murphy's Law. Even without an actual ending, is still incredibly funny (even if different from Amphibia and The Owl House).
Marcy really is one of my favorite characters in this show, and at the same time one of the most tragic. She's a clumsy oblivious nerd, she's insanely smart, and she has an incredibly kind heart. Even when she's oblivious to what's going on in the moment she always manages to bounce back and get that happy ending. But with True Colors we see so many things about her character, some that a few of us can relate to. It seems evident that home isn't that great behind the scenes, she's afraid of being alone and being forced to leave her closest friends, and in the end, she seemingly dies alone at the hands of a father figure, trapped in a sort of purgatory and as many seem to agree might likely become the host to "The Night" and whatever horrors it brings. It's incredibly tragic, and I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say I hope she's able to make it out alive, and gets that happy ending she, and everyone else, deserves
@@toadlord8594 That would actually be incredibly interesting to see. I’m a sucker for characters who used to be upbeat, bubbly and optimistic slowly become traumatized and crushed by certain events (not because I’m a heartless monster lmao but because of how interesting it is from a writing perspective). I still want Marcy to be happy but I think it would only be fitting if she became a little less bubbly and happy-go-lucky after being saved.
@@moonsyrup831 yeah I kind of want to believe Marcy’s fantasy vision about Amphibia will be shattered and while she’ll still have here her quirky high energy moments, she’ll obviously never be the same fun infodumper we come to know her as anymore. Not to mention having an ugly scar way worse than Sasha’s face scar, and from her freaking chest and back. An ugly reminder of being literally stabbed in the back by someone she trusted as a father figure.
Okay. Hopping Mall's final scene hit me way harder than I thought it would for very personal reasons. My grandfather passed away only a month or so after my niece was born, so when I saw that scene the idea that my niece could potentially miss her great-grandfather hit me like a truck. I will eventually tell her about what happened to her great-grandfather and why he can't be around anymore but I just know that I will be crying bittersweet tears alongside her when that day comes.
I said it before and I'll say it again, marcy's expressions MAKE True Colors. The way she goes from precious goodness to absolute horror, to anger to sadness into a kind of crazed bargaining rant before finally breaking down kills me every time I see it.
Bill was funny, and while he tried to destroy the entire world and is manipulative, he’s not pretending to be a father figure to a child so he can manipulate them for two seasons straight. King Andreas attempted child murder (which yeah, Bill did) and manipulated kids for so long. Bill is plain evil, and insane, but King Andreas is willing to keep a child alive in a relentless purgatory
MAN, WTF?! I CRIED SO MUCH WITH MARCY DYING. LIKE, SHE'S SUCH AN AMAZING CHARACTER. I HAVE AN MARCY WALLPAPER, MARCY'S PHOTOS, MARCY'S SCENES, I JUST L O V E HER. I love her because of her grow as a character! She was flawless in the begin (I don't consider clumsyness a flaw) but after that, we just see how much flaws she has and how much she could deal with it! YOU JUST GAVE ME A SLAP ON FACE SAYING ALL THESE THINGS ABOUT HER "DEATH"! I'M CRYING SO MUCH AT THIS MOMENT. It's so surprising think about how they just created a character that most part of the fandom could cry almost like she was real! I just... love her. Not as a real person, but as a character that sends you a great mensage.
Just in case you weren’t still crying about Marcy’s death: Marcy at the height of her breakdown: “Look at Sprig! I gave you this, I gave you *everything!*” Marcy’s last words: “I... I’m sorry... for *everything*...”
He literally said he had a brother during the hopping mall segment But I agree, as children my younger brother and I would go 0 to 100 to 0 all the time(and sometime we still do)
I think the people who say that moving away isn’t that big a motivation for what Marcy did need to understand a few VITAL things about her character. 1. Marcy probably either has an abusive home life or a very neglectful and absent one from what we saw in True Colors. Being forced to move miles away from her friends and be stuck with her parents, people who supposedly don’t care about her, would be devastating and horrible. 2. She’s shown to be incredibly socially awkward and uncomfortable in certain social situations, even saying in Scavenger Hunt, “And me, I have trouble looking people in the eye sometimes!” (which is also a sign of neurodivergency which is also a huge possibility for her character). Marcy’s always shown to be burying herself in her video games, Creatures and Caverns (aka DnD) and her studies to distract herself that she’s lonely and desperate for more deep down. Marcy longs for friendship, understanding, love, but all she has is two friends she’s had since she was little and internal devastation and fear of social interaction. Making new friends in her new home would be a horrible situation for her. 3. Anne and Sasha are not only Marcy’s best friends but her *only* friends. If Marcy moved away, it’d take her away from the only two people who supposedly care about her and spend time with her (even if one of them is extremely controlling) and she’d be even more devastated than she already was. Without Anne and Sasha, her world would probably come tumbling down. Yes, she could probably still text and call them but it wouldn’t be the same. This is why I love Amphibia so much. It gives you complex characters with deep lore, psyches and backstories to figure out, debunk and analyze, leaving a literature enthusiast and analyst like me riling for days, days I tell you! This show is so special to me for so many reasons and True Colors is officially one of my favourite cartoon episodes ever from how deeply it makes you think, the gut-wrenching moments and the incredible shocks, twists and reveals. This show never ceases to amaze me and I cannot wait for Season 3. I hate telling people to support Disney but PLEASE watch Amphibia on Disney+ if you haven’t already, I beg of you. It’s such a good show and if you like The Owl House, you’ll probably also like Amphibia. It has hilarious comedy, amazing characters, deep plots, beautiful and colourful animation, stupendous voice acting and some of the best writing I’ve seen in a cartoon in a long time. Yes, it can be seen as mostly a funny and goofy show that’s mostly comedy-oriented but it’s so, so much more than that. It’s a beautiful masterpiece of a show that’s just hiding it’s true potential where you have to find it. You have to be patient and watch the show through. Trust me though, it’s well worth it. Amphibia is very fun and you’ll grow great connections to the characters along the way. I cannot praise this show enough.
Yeah, while S1 was just alright, S2 was really outstanding indeed. I'd say that it was even better than the S1 of The Owl House (Althought, if the S2 of the latter keeps doing masterpieces over masterpieces as it's currently doing, it will really make Amphibia's S2 paling in comparison).
24:43 I also love the symbolism here. When you are in the zone, it’s like you’re in your own little bubble, and can’t hear or see anything around you. This show’s symbolism is amazing!
I’m so glad that you summed up the most fantastic aspect of this show so well, which would be the rich and endearing (mostly, I’m looking at you Andrias) characters. Not many people have, but I think it’s something that Amphibia does better than almost any of the competition, even better The Owl House if I’m honest. Speaking of The Owl House, Amphibia deserves to be just as popular, and I’m not really sure why it isn’t, because this show is *I N C R E D I B L E.* I can’t wait for Season 3!
Okay, yes, it’s fairly obvious why TOH is more popular (do I even need to say?), but I think it’s also because it has some almost-satirical similarities to other popular properties, most notably Harry Potter, and because it looks a little bit more “mature” from an outsider’s perspective (it’s not, True Colors has a body count). Not that it’s bad, I adore TOH.
@@chunkymonkey7983 I get what you mean. They have their moments for sure, but the big dealbreaker for me is that the first season is so unfocused that we don’t really get to know any of them outside of their personality-specific jokes. Lilith and Hooty are my favorite characters honestly.
@@davidmckenzie9086 okay this is a bit to explain, but remember in The First Temple episode, Marcy brings up ancient Newtopian language, it actually exists or atleast was translated into our alphabet. In the episode where King Andrias tells Anne and Marcy that the stones need to be recharged (forgot the title) the book that he shows them actually has a prophecy written in it in the Newtopian language. The prophecy brings up The Fall, forgot the whole thing, but The Fall thing is definitely the weird Multi eyed thing that Andrias had in his basement.
Hopping Mall's final scene is beautiful. My dad committed suicide when I was young and I never got to really know him because of the depression and the fact that I didn't really get him as much as I wanted because of that fact. I didn't really know him but I miss him. He used to kiss me when I went to bed and his spiky facial hair always make me feel uncomfortable but I would give anything to feel that uncomfortabliness one last time. So in a way, I also relate with Anne. With that said... I would only give this episode an 8/10. It's still really good but I wouldn't call it great. Both mom scenes are amazing and it's fun but overall... it's just that... fun. Far from bad but not amazing.... but that's just my opinion.
What you said about intelligence is exactly why characters like Lisa Loud, Rick Sanchez and Tony Stark all fail in my book. All three characters claim to be smarter than everybody...but they embody a DIFFERENT kind of intelligence, textbook intelligence. Not one of the three examples I listed has sacrificed anything the moment they saw things weren't in their favor, reconsidered their options or took other people's feelings into consideration. All THEY'VE done is claim they're better than everyone, they're always right and that they have every right to sacrifice other people just to prove a point. I still believe Stark was in the wrong during Civil War and in creating Ultron. I STILL believe that Lisa Loud should be put in Juvie for using family as Guinea pigs and I still believe that Rick Sanchez is the most evil being in media and that his fans are (almost) just as bad for saying they "admire" his Nihilism. But that's just me, I'm smart myself...but in the same way Marcy is; just a nerd with a passion for gaming, D&D, fanfiction and reading
You really just gonna gloss over the fact that Tony Stark nearly sacrificed himself in Avengers 1, huh? Or the fact he actually *did* sacrifice himself in Endgame?
@@MrTalithan The MCU movies have messed up so many great characters that it all means diddily squat to me now. I'm glad Stark's gone, the whole series was made just to make HIM look good and the other Avengers look like dopes. And don't get me started on the dumb Loki series
Honestly, I can get behind all of Finn's Top 6 EXCEPT for one: Hopping Mall. I can understand why Finn has it as high as he does, but for me, I just don't think the episode is Top 6 material. 1. The tearjerking scene at the end didn't feel like it connected well with the rest of the episode. If it was supposed to serve as a kind of epilogue scene, then I feel like it went on a bit too long to serve that purpose. 2. Justin Felbinger doesn't really sell Sprig's emotional moments for me. He's a comedic talent, no question, but I don't think he's able to sell Sprig when he's being very contemplative like he is in this scene. Personally, I think that Anne's little speech about how much she misses her mother should have come BEFORE the contest for the teapot for 2 reasons: 1. It raises the stakes for Anne to win, because the audience now realizes that this teapot is more than just a souvenier, it's also a reminder of her Mom when she's been away from her for so long. 2. It makes Anne's decision to give the teapot away THAT much more impactful, showing that Anne has the humility to let the teapot go to the person that TRULY deserves to have it, even though it means giving up something she desperately wanted for very valid reasons. I think doing the episode like this makes the episode have a lot more emotional highs and lows and also allows the epilogue scene, where Sprig reveals his Mom died, to be a bit shorter. It also allows Sprig to explain a bit that the day's events and seeing how much Anne cares about her Mom makes him think about his own Mom and how he didn't get to have that relationship with her. I think that having some of that background could have helped make the "Can you miss someone you never actually knew?" line be an even BIGGER gut punch than it was.
First of all, superb video as always! I would have put the shut in instead of bes. and micro. but I totally respect your point of view. Now I'm asking if you could please watch Craig of the Creek. It's a CN show made by Matt Burnett and Ben Levis, who worked in Steven Universe. I think it fits most of your interests: good characters, a good setting, good humour... Even if it is mostly episodic you have to start from season 1 as there is a plot that needs to be seen in order. Internet doesn't give it as much love as it deserves and I think you would give it more love. Thanks for reading and I hope you like the show!!!! Pd: I am spanish so if something I write is said wrong please don't blame me
are we not even going to mention the music behind the super saiy-anne scene (called "anne's power")?? that shit gave me the biggest goosebumps of any piece of music i've ever heard. it has everything to do with the callback in the melody to "no big deal." the scene is anne's recognition of how much the plantars mean to her and how real her love for them (and their love for her) is. it's anne acknowledging everything they have been through together. everything they've sacrificed for each other. in other words, it's anne's recognition that it IS a big deal. a very very very big deal. (also the voice acting in that scene, the final scream on BACK is one of the most haunting pieces of voice acting i can remember)
Everything about Marcy makes me feel like she's neurodivergent. She gets really sucked into games, she clearly struggles to understand others emotions at times, and definitely hyperfixates on stuff. I really relate to her, and I hope that A. she canonically gets addressed as neurodivergent, and B. it is something that the show focuses on helping her with - not because there's anything wrong with being neurodivergent, but because the world can be challenging to navigate for neurodivergent people. TLDR Marcy has ADHD because she is a total mood
I’d always understand if you’re too busy or just don’t feel up to it, but I for one appreciate your review/reaction videos for new episodes of The Owl House, and encourage you to keep making them! Maybe you’re working on one for Hunting Palismen right now, how would I know?
Note about The First Temple: I like how they sort of bring up how if you’re trying to think about forgiving someone but the person in question is constantly bombarding you with favors and gifts and the like kinda makes it harder to forgive them in the first place
*7:05* This episode honestly deserved 9/10 Just because that *IRON GIANT REFERENCE 😍!* You people can't comprehend how much I adore The Iron Giant! *30:11* Also, this Physics joke here was the best thing ever.
That review was outstanding, how you took the season and expanded on what made Amphibia great, why the team should be praised for their work, and really made the show more than just a cartoon. Even how you connected the characters to your own life brought more connection to the video. I love all your reviews, an outstanding job.
I think something that should have been included was the backstory of Sprig and Polly’s mom. In Hopping Mall Sprig talked about not knowing their parents, and we had an episode about their family being INSANE in season one. It’s really cool to see that particular backstory, and I really like the flashback artwork. It was interesting to see
@Yonna Nwoko first i only saw 4 rankings of 10 out of 10 but i may have missed 2 second not the point the point was if so many are getting 10 out of 10 it must be a really good season heck none of the episodes this season even got a negative score
Y'all think that each one of the girls' surrogate parent figures reflect how their lives in the human world work? Anne's parents are strict but loving Sasha's parents push her to her full potential, sometimes ignoring the bad aspects of it aaaaand the least said about Marcy's the better...
You know, she left that gem about eighty percent charge. And if the power came from her, then imagine how strong she would have been if she used it earlier. Also, I call it Calamity Anne.
Here's my biggest question about the finale, one that I'm sure several other might be curious about. After hearing about the king's plans and seeing the lengths he'll go to achieve them; will the likes of Yunan, Olivia and others still be loyal to him?
"I AM GENERAL YUNNAN! SCOURGE OF THE SAND WARS! DEFEATER OF RAGNAR THE WRETCHED! AND THE YOUNGEST NEWT EVER TO ACHIEVE THE RANK OF GENERAL IN THE GREAT NEWTOPIAN ARMY!" (I did that from memory)
If anyone’s curious about the music playing when Finn is talking about Hopping Mall, it’s Short Break in Mushroom Town from Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story! Specifically the version from the 3DS remake!
I think I completely agree with you on this. I love the way you go so deep into the episode and characters, it's nice. Also, yes, Marcy is best girl. Your birthday is September 12? Dude, so is mine.
Scaling organs, *but it's no big deal.* Severed arteries, *but it's no big deal.* Fleeting consciousness, *but it's no big deal.* People hating me for twisting the knife, *but it's no big deal.*
While I do not agree with your ratings of the 6 best (*intensely glares at "bessie and micro-angelo"*) I do agree with your analysis of these episodes. Even the goofy and not so serious episodes are really wholesome and entertaining to watch and give really good messages/morals
Something I really liked about Hopping Mall was all the background stores. Hop Topic, Sea-Flora, and my personal favorite, Wetzolytl's Pretzolytls. That is genius. Frog Claire's is meh, though to be fair it's hard to come up with frog puns for everything.
Sprig has always been my favourite character but in hopping mall I cried my eyes out, I just wanted to give the little man a hug and say I know what your going through😭
i don't cry much but the voice performance of brenda song during the climax of true colors always sends me crying you can even hear the deep pain in her voice all the way from the start of her transformation and the constant tears you can see with her. it's really not her fighting in a fit of rage but a fit of sadness trying desperatly for the "smartest" being in the room and the one responcible to reverse what he's done. she never states i'll make you pay for this or anything else all she wanted was her friend back. for me it's a really simmilar to the ending of the tale of iroh from avatar where the vocal performance is out there not just from the visual storytelling and the music but the vocal finess in it too.
I think quarrelers pass was bad, but it may have actually not been more important now, with the whole “seek the mother of olms” season 3 thing (The 2 headed blind axolotl snake siblings arguing about who was mom’s favourite are olms)
30:11-36:47 im not even joking THIS EPISODE MADE ME SOB LIKE A BABY my mom's mother (my grandma) I never got to meet she passed away before I was born so this episode hurt and god knows if my mom saw this tv show and this episode in particular …yeah and when sprig said: "is it possible to miss someone you never met?" that made me hug my laptop YES IT'S POSSIBLE edit: Finn YOUR MAKING ME CRY
How to make the previously irredeemable character redeemable: make him a puppet of an even more irredeemable character that isn't even a character, and then have him mirror your protagonist in the finale
I just knew that Marcy wasn't dead, it just was impossible for me to even consider her dying, and I swear that the feeling of reading bit by bit reddit post about Marcys death felt like drowning in ice cold waters, but I quickly saw the season 3 trailer and oh god was i not going to sleep if i didnt watched it
I THOUGHT HE'D AT LEAST SAY THE DINNER/ BOTB WAD AN HONORABLE METION. The seperation we needed of the girls just having fun before the tragoc event that happend in true colors would mak it my second favorite episod
@your review of "Quarreling Pass" That's just how siblings are, mate. One time me and my sister got into a huge fight over her taking a card from me while we were playing Garbage and then we made up bc we watched some tv together...
When I first started watching Amphibia, I knew Grime's voice was familiar. Upon learning it was Troy Baker, I got so excited! He voices one of my favorite characters in another series, Van Kleiss in "Generator Rex", and drea god, I love his voice. Now, I can't unhear it. :3 Also, In season 3 (spoiler alert) when Anne is in the human world, she keeps saying stuff to imply that she thinks that Marcy is alive. Saha has a reason to think Marcy is alive--she heard Andy tell Olivia to put to but Marcy into a rejuvination tank, but Anne? Anne went to the human world after Marcy was just stabbed, and HAS NO REASON TO THINK SHE'S ALIVE!
Important announcement of the Third season of The Owl House The Owl House has been renewed for a shortened 3rd season. We want at least another full season length!! Dana posted on Twitter that we will be getting a short season containing just 3 special length episodes; the equivalent of 6 normal episodes. It is confirmed that this will be the last season. This was NOT Dana's choice; she had been hoping for a normal 10-20 episode pickup, and not expecting a cancellation. As The Owl House is one of Disney's most popular currently airing shows, my speculation is that this cancellation was brought on by budget constraints due to COVID-19 and the inability to run the Disney parks. Dana tweeted that if we want to see the show continue, TOH merch, or anything else TOH related, snail mail is the way to go. Disney still reads and responds to snail mail. This is an effective way of contacting them. They don't appear to read DMs and emails, presumably due to 1) the sheer number they receive, and 2) the fact that people mailing letters are statistically over 18 and therefore able to earn and spend money (like on, say, cable subscriptions or merch). Watching the show on Disney+ or signing this petition might be effective as well. Hopping Mall really hit me because it’s relatable on Sprigs part My brother died shortly after he was born, and even tho I never really got to know him or remember him- hearing Sprig ask if you can miss someone you never even knew- it sent me into tears thinking about my brother

Hey fan when I saw that part in that the season three opening I was like oh good Marcy still alive then you went through the whole she’s in a mental purgatory speech and I’m now like oh no mercy is alive thanks for ruining that
I just realized why marcy is gone in season 3. It’s because Anne is the main character and Sasha has more development to do but Marcy’s character arc is over by the end of season 2
When Anne said all the things she missed about her mother I wanted to cry. Because I relate but with my dad. He died one year ago. I relate Anne even tho you see your mum in s3 you lucky cheese muffin
I don't hold anything against Marcy, and I didn't to begin with. I've moved around so much that, at this point, if I had the option that she had, I would have done exactly the same thing. That's what I thought when I originally saw True Colors and the more I thought about it the more I know it is true. I would definitely open the box with my friends. Marcy doesn't deserve what happened, but even with what did happen, I wouldn't want it to happen any other way. She was trying to make up for what her friends thought was the wrong thing to do, and she was trying to help them get home and to safety while trying to stop Andrias from being able to travel to other worlds. Marcy doesn't deserve anything bad, be it anger from her friends or injury/ whatever happened with the flaming sword. What she did, in my opinion, is relatable and innocent. She never meant anything bad and doesn't deserve this at all... and again... I would still have done exactly what she did...
