The knife scene in episode 1 is actually to emphasize the differences between Sarah and Ellie, Sarah is more so enthralled by the engraving rather than the knife itself where as Ellie is much more violent and would have been fascinated by the knife, I think it is a parallel to the episode 3 scene where Ellie uses her own knife to study and then kill an infected Edit: I think your media literacy is actually just bad

the bill, frank and riley storylines aren’t pointless. the last of us is about people and their stories and showcasing stories outside of joel and ellie flesh out the world. we saw joel’s backstory with sarah; the person he arguably loved the most when his life was normal (pre apocalypse) and ellie’s backstory was introduced in episode 7. episode 7 shows ellie making a choice to fight for joel the way she couldn’t for riley, providing a parallel of two different events in her life where the only person she has is dying. even though these stories aren’t actively propelling the main narrative forward, they are providing depth for world building and the characters making them equally important.

That's a really interesting concept.... But still kinda stupid. So the stories of other characters parallel the characters we have now.... ( interesting ). But at the end of the day... They are their own characters and why are there two (Gay) relationships to build up a bond between a father and Daughter.... Instead of having Bill and Ellie solo romance... They could've made Henry and Sam a solo that can most definitely work for both of them.

I love the show, and one of the only things I noticed wrong that I just shrugged off was that in the first episode when Sarah was at school, her teacher said there was some type of homework due the next day, but in episode 3 when Joel was telling Ellie about the outbreak, he said it was Friday night that everything fell apart and it was all gone by Monday, meaning that when they showed Sarah in class, it was a Friday and no schoolwork would be "due tomorrow."

I would argue some of the errors such as kathleen and henry are actually just about the hypocrisy of humans/emotional reactions. I interpreted Henry’s reaction as him not wanting Joel to be the one to kill his brother. Henry had to come back to his senses to realize Ellie’s life is in danger and there is nothing that can save Sam.

They shot Sarah because she had injured her ankle and the soilder thought she got bitten and was infected. I actually didn't notice this at first until I rewatched it and questioned it so it made sense to me. It wasn't made clear because I think the viewer was supposed to catch it themselves. Also the scene where Sarah is gazing at the knifes print was supposed to contrast Ellie and her knife. Sarah is more fragile and girly (Joel even mentioned this) while Ellie is more tougher, given she was born to survive in the apocalypse.
@CultureVultureMedia1
@CultureVultureMedia1 Год назад
Great observations! Personally, I think the knife-link isn't worthwhile (also, what about the horses?), but that doesn't make it an error. I can see the ankle-thing, but in no shot does it look like a bite. There's also no camera angle showing her ankle when they encounter the soldier. Suppose that's no error either, just really really bad.
@Tallypt
@Tallypt Год назад
@@CultureVultureMedia1Joel told the soldier that she was injured in the ankle. The soldier got orders from a superior to kill them because of it (probably as a desperate means to contain the spreading of the infection), so there was no need for the soldier to see the injury, he had already gotten his orders. Also, this was the day the apocalypse started - the soldier and his superior had no good understanding of how the disease could be spread and were just desperate to contain it.
@scarletwidows
@scarletwidows Год назад
@@CultureVultureMedia1 1. the horses are literally meaningless and is just a simple engraving. 2. they literally point out that sarah has hurt her leg when joel and sarah get separated from tommy. we already KNOW her leg is hurt, they dont need to point it out again. and the soldier shoots her because his supervisor told him to shoot at them. its literally all explained to you, you are just terrible at paying attention and actually catching obvious details.
@TheSofkujepanen
@TheSofkujepanen Год назад
@@CultureVultureMedia1 huh? Why would it matter if we saw the injury since all that matters is that the soldier was told she is injured and thus they assumed she was infected. It’s not like the military would take any chances in situations like that. They already are killing kids all around the world so in a zombie outbreak they wouldn’t waste time in inspecting every injury on everyone in order to separate them from the infected. They would just shoot them all, just as they did Sarah. And the knife thing was just to separate Sarah and Ellie. Sarah was more fascinated with the pretty carving on the knife rather than the knife itself and Ellie is fascinated by it precisely because of what knives are used for, not for how they look.

pretty much every "point" you made can be explained with context you purposely left out. Episode 3 isn't "pointless" because it draws similarities between joel and bill both being protectors and stopping anyone from harming the people he loves and sets up joel finding a car. Episode 7 isn't pointless because it emphasises and explains why ellies biggest fear is to be alone. The reason ellie stays in the room with sam is because she believes she cured him by rubbing her blood on him (a point you purposely left out).
@bellablondon6172
@bellablondon6172 Год назад
I *somewhat* get people’s arguments with episode 3 (the non homophobic ones, ofc), and you don’t really NEED to watch it to understand the overall narrative, although you are missing out on a really sweet and really wholesome self contained story. Episode 7, however, is literally Ellie’s backstory and is crucial to both the plot and her character

You're making things up to justify episode 3, which is a waste of time episode. Doesn't matter how good you think it is, there is no reason for it. You literally have to make up connections in your head to say why it's needed. Try explaining that episode with the actual episode context. Episode 7 is also a waste of time. Not only is Ellie's backstory unnecessary, hence why it was DLC and done better in that, they also kept the story flowing with the flashback. They didn't just stop the main story for 45 minutes then resume. The episode sucks. The show sucks.

I used to agree with you in your other videos, but this one i couldn't disagree more. The comparison of Joel and Dany is just rideculess. Joel has lost so much and he literally said that Ellie was the only reason for his healing process of the loss of Sara and the others. The only way you could compare the two (Dany and Joel) was if the fireflies have given Ellie back to Joel and then he would had gone out and massecered everyone. I know the show isn't perfect but it feels like you went out of your way to make this video, with some really bad and stretched points only because that is what your channel have become. And finally you can make some other content than GoT that is popular.

@@CultureVultureMedia1 As someone who’s never played the game, watching Joel snap that way was a little bit jarring. But it was nowhere near as insane as Dany switching to full evil in heartbeat… The main reason being, unlike for Dany, his motivations - whatever you think of it - are made totally clear to the audience. @@CultureVultureMedia1 in a discussion about the show, Mazin said the idea behind the kiss was to show that cordyceps isn't evil or motivated by to do evil; it is just a living organism and nothing more or less. Thematically the kiss ties into the point the show repeatedly touches upon, specifically that love isn't innately good or evil and can be the driving force behind both benevolent or malevolent actions. HBO has this discussion and others posted on youtube. They have podcasts for each episode and every podcast has Neil Druckmann, Craig Mazin, and Troy Baker with an occasional guest. 1:00 I think it's a foreshadow to the last episode, where Joel receives Ellie's switchblade. Maybe it's that very thing that pushed him to actually save Ellie and not fail just like he did with Sarah. 1:30 I think that would have led Tommy to actually have a severe skin burn lol 3:12 I think there is an actually bigger issue here, the infected shouldn't even care about Tess' presence since she's already infected, when sick people produce certain chemicals that some animals can small (cats dogs etc).This might even be the reason on how infected dont bite each other. 7:04 I mean they're holding Ellie hostage, one sudden move and she could get shot. 10:35 I mean it's like saying Tess' death didn't matter because she's been just mentioned a few time, the encounter with Tommy didn't matter because, well we won't see him till season 2, Tommy's wife was pointless and the counter with the cannibals didn't have sense. I think it's actually a way to show how much they've been through and how many friends they've lost, making Ellie's hate toward Joel EXTREMELY clear when she'll find out what Joel did to the fireflies 14:44 I think it's left to the viewer's imagination at first, wondering if the first person Ellie shot was actually her best friend, y'know that line ""it wasn't my first time shooting someone". But most importantly the episode isn't about hoe Ellie killed Riley etc etc but actually deciding if it is better to leave Joel off its own or not. I also noticed how attached Ellie seemed to be towards Tess in what seemed like a brief period of time immediately following the discovery and realization that Tess had become infected, I also noticed a minor accent slip while Ellie was being dragged away by Joel. that said, It's possible that Ellie remembered what Raily said after being bitten at the mall and understandably didn't want to leave Tess to die alone but sadly they had no choice with a horde of infected only a few moments away from rushing into the building, but if we are viewing the scene of reference absent the knowledge of Riley's last words to Ellie her reaction towards leaving Tess is slightly odd. the series is by no means perfect taking into consideration possible budget constraints and time restrictions it's still one of the best series released this year and also one of the best live game adaptations made thus far hence even with a few minor errors I sincerely enjoyed this series, all the actors were great, the visuals were great nothing occurred in the series that heavily effected my overall enjoyment of the show, as for some of the critiques I think some of the constructive criticisms regarding the lack of action and pacing etc might be taken into consideration while in production for season 2. keep in mind it was the series very first run and I think it was solid first season overall.

Great points! I have to say though, that when you're an industry leader like HBO, having to "consider" a bunch of excuses is not quite good enough, for me at least. When something is marketed as world class, I expect better than mediocre storytelling. None of the things the show does amazing at is consistent throughout the season, which might come down to having 7 different directors for 9 episodes.

2 more points: fuel becomes useless after 6 months or so, but in the show, cars work just fine after 20 years. The other thing is the bite Ellie's mother get. It' takes just a few seconds to reach the baby? No virus, bacteria, fungus or whatever would travel so fast in the blood.

Gas does not become useless after 6 months, its what we call 'shitty gas'. It does not work as well but it still works- the main issue you'll have when using shitty gas is it burns dirty, doesn't fuel the engine for as long, can cause gumming of the cylinders and valves, might cause knocking and may fuck up your engine. source: engineer and live on a farm

the second mistake is actually the actual opposite. my dad who used to work on power lines and knows quite a bit about it geeked out here bc he said certain things (something todo with the power lines i think i was paying more attention to the show than what he was saying) would start blowing up if someone couldn't regulate them. along the lines of that anyways, so no, they actually made it quite accurate :) it's a fact honestly a handful of people would know.

I don’t think that’s true tho because even Sam took a whole night to turn and there’s no exact point in the series that we know where people change under 15 minutes at least from what I can remember from my knowledge. If I remember spores in the games are the only l way remember people turning fast since it goes through your entire bloodstream compared to a bite that slowly spreads in the first game is the guy who gets stuck with a broken mask and is apparently also there for hours
@flecks_piano
@flecks_piano Год назад
@@javiermoreno368 there is actually a chart that is shown soon after the 20 years jump. Head or neck bites are said to take 5-15 minutes, from shoulders down to the belt 2 to 8 hours, and the legs 12h to 24h. I'd argue the chart is vague enough that her bite may as well fall into the range of "shoulder" bite.

I think my biggest gripe with the show was all the times it took the dialouge straight from the game, but not the context surrounding it. There are SO many instances, of this. They are all subtle, but all those choices enhanced the Game and elevate it to the status it has now. For example, "Baby Girl" Ellie tells Joel, in the game "He tried to..." and Joel's parental instincts immeditley take over, not allowing her to finish that sentence, and he comfrts her the only way he knows how. Its what motivates him to say it. In the show, he says "I got you...I got you baby girl" It just doesn't seem as organic. Its a small nitpick, but this happens all over the series and it begins to add up. "Don't tell me I'd be safter with someone else because the truth is, I'd just be more scared." I don't know...Ellie in the show, never really showed much fear. In the game, shes open about the fact that shes shitting her pants, she asks Joel to come back for her when he goes for a dive in the Subway. Joel and Ellie saved each others lives so many times in the Game, when you take out those life and death scenarios, that argument in the Farm House, just doesn't have the same meaning. David going full pscyho in the end seemed unearned, He turns on Ellie without any build up. Ellie and Sam don't have the same heart to heart as they did in the game. The list goes on. And I'd hate to say it, but the acting in the final episode, specifcally felt really really flat. Really felt like 2 actors reading the script off a page. All the inflection and the reading of the lines just don't seem right at all. The Show had an incredible first 2 episodes, but I'll admit it fell off the tracks very quickly. Still the best Video game adaptation of all time, but at best, on its own, a 5/10. Just a personal opinion though.

The last episode just felt very rushed like they wanted to end the whole season already and work on the next season. Acting wise too, as someone who was taken aback by bella in the earlier episodes was not expecting the last scene to be this flat.....it made me feel nothing. The ending of the show didn't feel as intense as the game's ending did.

Whenever I see this in the show I sigh. Personally I feel like the show would have been way better if they replaced most of these moments with their own dialogue instead of the game's. That moment with Joel talking about his nightmares to Tommy and showing so much emotion is a great example. I enjoyed that scene more than Joel and Ellie's argument in the show.

I felt the same. In the game Ellie had more tone and emotions in her voice. When Bella and Pedro were saying their lines from the game, it felt flat, emotionless, as if the character is not there, just reading. I felt soooo much the lack of tone and emotion in ALL the lines from the game, all of them. It was weird and only making me wish that they stood with original lines from the show instead or reusing lines that were given with no strength...or time - few of them felt so rushed like Ellie's final speech in the last episode. In the game Ellie was insecure, hesitant to share with Joel and she showed by her body language and her her tone filled with pause, doubt and pain. Didn't feel the same at the end of the show... Pascal had those moments too where the voice was just... too rigid. Overall, I enjoyed the show but I enjoyed more the originality than what they reused from the game due to the lack of flavor when they were delivered

Also Ep3 and Ep7 have large meaning to them due to it explaining Ellie's fear of being alone and showing the similarities and differences between Bill and Joel and what it means to protect a life. I'm not saying the show is perfect, but I do think you were too harsh on it.

David’s speech fails in the show as Joel was attacked unprovoked as they were making an escape and about to leave. David’s dumbass men attacked and had to be killed in self defense. So what crazy man? In the game you HAVE to kill multiple people, both Joel and Ellie do. Mandatory deaths. So it makes way more sense. The show wanted to keep some big moments from the game but failed to build the foundation that makes it pay off. But most will ignore this and think “ohhh he’s giving the speech! So good!”. The show is decent to good, 6 or 7 out of 10. But fails to reach the same high points as the game. Sad a video game from ten years ago does a better job telling this story than a HBO production with an insane budget and really good show runners. Lmao

Ok the three horses shows Joel's interest in them he wants sheep, he bonds the horses easily, it seems he has a deeper rural background before he met his exwife and settled where they did with Sara it's possibly how he & his ex met in rodeo or something like that it's a past that isn't terribly important for the game or show to cover. Yes TV Ellie is that stupid as TV ellie has not had to endure the same terrible streets & world knowledge game Ellie did. Game ellie went into the streets saw people being shot and hung, she saw wars between Fedra & FF but TV Ellie seems to have missed all this and lives very sheltered she's dealing with TV Joel as if he's one of the elder kids in Fedra school not a killer aiming at her, game Ellie knew the difference TV Ellie does not till later on the series. No one wants a dead zombie's shoes they aren't that desperate they'd salvage off of actual safe dead people so as not to catch the virus that's why they were burned in what they wore it was all contaminated by default who knows how many scavengers after the start became zombies from this type of scavenging. To me in game when they looted masks off of dead dudes I hated that I'm like there has to be some type of disease on that thing you're now strapping to your face that he/she decayed in! Again TV Ellie vs Game Ellie, TV Ellie was fairly sheltered & she's protesting due to this being Rieley 2.0 she doesn't want to leave Tess due to this guilt meanwhile Game Ellie did question this but still moved she knew they had to leave & a bunch of armed troops is more motivating to Game Ellie to move onward when they're banging on the front door rather then what TV Ellie experienced was dead silence & they didn't know how far off danger was. I agree TV Ellie should look around but my bigger issue was the dirt free tampons. Again TV Ellie isn't world savy like Game Ellie. Game Ellie stabs & hurls bricks at people's head within hour 1 TV Ellie acts like she's dealing with school bullies. I think Bill wanted to shoot those guys we do not know how long the whole ordeal was going on for he probably tried to use cover but it wasn't enough so he pulled a Wyatt Eurp and stood still in the open that's a real & viable strategy if your enemy can't hit the broad side of a barn which they couldn't he made the mistake of moving something Wyatt said never to do in a shootout due to moving is what would get you shot so if bullets failed to hit you 3 seconds in you did not move from place that was Bill's issue. I get him relying on the fence as once Bill shot those not burning the ones on fire would die & those raiders aren't stupid enough to try to leap over the fence of fire to get to the electric one beyond it! Bill & Frank's life isn't tact on they're showing true love as love is a theme and while Joel shows at the end of their episode he's smart enough to understand they died for love as he met them before this when they were still in love he was aware they loved one another he just shows up and finds out by how much. We see 3 flavors of love that Joel takes samples of: Frank & Bill true deep yet tragic love they went out on their own terms & told Joel to protect Tess, Sister of free Fedra: Crazy trauma love she'll kill anyone involved who killed her brother & was fine with ending Sam's life as a torment to his elder brother, Wiry love Marlene loved Ellie's mom promised to care for her daughter but she also holds a love for the world overall she had to weight & choose she chose to kill Ellie break her promise to her friend & save the world at the cost of her own love towards both Ellie & Ellie's mom. The sister is the most unconvincing badguy ever seen but I think that's the point she was never expecting to be leader she exists solely on the clout her brother built in his example so they understand she's mourning & vengeful and they're willing to let her be alone for now she may've transferred power to someone else after this period of mourning & murder was done. But honestly George Washington was also soft spoken he may've sounded as weak willed as she did but she doesn't get her chance to ride a motorcycle solo through a horde of zombies and maybe kill them with a chainsaw moment to really allow us to love her being the crazy leader. I think Hennry getting loud is to hint to Ellie & Joel what he want's done trying to bolster his fearfulness like the oldman said but I didn't even notice it till you said something. What you see here is them trying to recreate things from the game see Henery does leave Joel I think twice in the whole game's level bot times trying to protect Sam from his people. I don't recall Henry trying to run in game at the sniper scene but the whole point wasn't to stick around and see what they were doing. I hated how the sniper didn't put 2 & 2 together & just let Joel sneak up on him in the game Joel is targeted as you move across the board and Ellie & Henry are making attempts to force the sniper back on them and you had goons helping the Sniper so at points it makes sense why the sniper goes back to ellie do to he thinks his men will kill joel but they fail. TV sniper was pretty dumb. And I think TV Henergy made a serious lucky shot he was probably hoping to scare off Sam but it killed him. Crossing the river of death wasn't done without effort they seemed to have waited hours and several bullets to test if anyone was out there. I think they didn't consider any options due to they must go that way they don't have options not to. TV show ellie dragging & fixing joel is way more believable then game ellie inspite both having found sleds game ellie has to nearly die getting to a very unstable helicopter for her meds & she has to repair an injury that most likely needed surgery I scavenged for medical books but I don't think any of them covered through puncture wound care! So TV ellie making the sled & bargaining for meds is way better & more sound. Ep 7 isn't pointless cuz if she'd mentioned Rieley at the end of the show no one would know what she's talking about! We're showing a core person who makes ellie who she is not some rando so her loosing the love of her life shows her what can be lost so she fights for joel more & over all keeps her wanting to make relationships happen into the 2nd game till Joel's lies catch up to them. Otherwise you'd have to say sara's death didn't matter either and the whole intro of the show was also pointless. TV ellie vs game ellie but game ellie didn't do much better in distracting the men I did like how TV ellie pulled over the hutch that was nice. But yeah I hated wounded game & TV joel here they shouldn't be able to do any mass murder at this point. Joel's rampage wasn't random it's in the game.

Thanks for taking the time with such thorough feedback! For the points I didn't already provide counter arguments for in the game, I feel like you're leaning on assumptions, like with Joel's knife. Your assumptions could well be true, but why spend time on introducing things like that if nothing is going to come from it? I'm not asking to be flicked on the nose, but having any kind of symbolic value to the knife would have been something. Now it's just a waste of $50K to look at a knife that MIGHT mean something MAYBE, if we're being generous. Or how only a fraction of the time spent on Riley actually gave us something we didn't already know.

I will base my review of your video on the fact that you uploaded the whole thing in one go, which suggests you had already watched the whole series before making this video. While you made some very good observations. I totally agreed with the shoelace one, although I have an interpretation there: FEDRA officers are well off, so they do not need the same things that the citizens do. It could very well be the case that FEDRA does not allow workers to loot bodies while working. I also had an issue with Bill standing in the middle of the road. I also believe they could have used the deaf aspect but I realized it would’ve been weird considering Sam is 8. That’s the second grade. And there’s the fact that Henry and Sam have largely been sheltered from the real dangers of the world. There are more, but my main criticism for your video is that your analysis is very disconnected, in the sense that some of the “errors” you see are actually answered much later on. If you had made this video one at a time, then I would have accepted the lack of context leading one to assume certain things. Your video suggests a highly “scientific” and pragmatic, almost surgical way of analyzing media. So two points: I do not want you to take this as an insult, and I admit this is indeed me criticizing you (so yes, you might take it as ad hominem). First, I suspect your views are indicative of your world view, which in turn makes it more difficult for you to empathize. Second, I suspect you are a quite intelligent person (as in, academically smart). This is evidenced by your inability to suspend disbelief. There are certain things you also missed because they require a higher grasp of sociology. For example, you ask why the military officer shoots at Joel and Sarah. I’m surprised you did not get from context that when the soldier tells his superior that the little girl is injured, he is told that he should eliminate all “injured” people. It is possible to deduce that during that chaotic period, there already were suspicions by the military, government, etc that the “infection” was spread through human contact. I’d go on and on but I run the risk of being seen as someone who just wants to attack you, especially since I have already admitted to indeed criticizing you yourself and not just your video. So yeah, while some of the errors you pointed out were valid…. Going back to the knife scene… do you really not see the purpose of that scene? The fact that Sarah looks at it but does not take it? I don’t know if you are a writer, or have ever taken creating writing. I don’t know your credentials. Those don’t matter if you promote your video as an opinion. However, because you are marketing it as facts, I will have to say that your lack of knowledge in this regard shows. Again, I am fully aware that I may come across as attacking you personally, but because your video speaks with an air of authority, I have to question whether the source of that authority is valid or not. Because your video is sadly very misguided, I have decided neither to give it a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

For EP 2 they had a podcast talking about the kiss of death with Tess also the bill and Frank is mainly for Joel after losing Tess it doesn’t matter in the story wise but matters for Joel’s character EP also it matters for Ellie’s character herself but not the main character I don’t get why all people want is action action and more action other than that I just love the last of us being a TLOU streamer as well

I'm sorry, I don't understand. How does the show relate the kiss of death to Joel and Ellie's arcs? They weren't there to see it after all.

I feel like many of these criticisms are just you missing foreshadowing, parallels, and character development. Shame, was looking forward to some well thought-out critiques. Not sure if this channel is more focused on humor than actual analysis (a la CinemaSins), but this video falls short of making concrete arguments against the show's production, let alone pointing out 'errors'. And the attempts at humor were either weak or held back by trying to make the jokes serious criticisms.
