Hey! Considering how big this video is, I obviously cant go over every detail, that's why we also do 10+ minute videos about individual Pokemon. However, in our usual fashion, we did indeed make some mistakes (not mentioning something is not a mistake for the most part, unless its something integral, rather than additional). So I'll document those by editing this comment. Here they are: -I said grey squirrels came to the UK from mainland Europe, they actually came to the UK AND the mainland from North America. -One of the "Anacondas" shown was actually a reticulated python. Also Sandaconda's nose is a double-barreled shotgun, which were invented by Joseph Manton, an English man. -Major forgot to mention some of the more important Fossilmon details, (which are being covered in their own video) But the big one for now is that Arcto COULD be from a Mosasaur or Ichthyosaur, but I'm leaning more towards the Arctophoca / Arcophoca. Which is a prehistoric seal. Notably, even the Mosasaur and Ichthyosaur are NOT actually dinosaurs. Just like that seal/walrus. -Galarian Stunfisk actually reflects the idea that beartraps were originally intended for humans, as its mouth is a Pokeball, acting similarly to Foongus and Voltorb as Pokeball-mimics. - The Penguin hockey team we mentioned IS in the UK, but we used the wrong logo, its the logo of an American team. also while we're here: the word "Penguin" actually comes from Welsh, meaning "White Head" -The Japanese word for 'snowman' translates to 'snow daruma,' daruma dolls being what darmanitan was already based on. Making the connection with snow.
In thievul's shield pokedex entry it states that "Boltund is its natural enemy." I think this helps explain boltunds somewhat super hero like design, in the sense that thievul is a conniving villain and boltund is the hero who stops it.
The rune on stonjourner looks straight up like Ingwaz to me. It is also sometimes called Ing and can look a couple other ways. It mainly represents a god called Freyr-Yngvi, which is Old Norse for Lord Yngvi. His title is often shortened to just Freyr, meaning Lord. He is one of Odin's sons, a fertility god, and supposedly the ancestor to a Swedish royal family. Aside from that, the rune symbolizes rest (stand around a lot), a deep connection with the Earth (made of stones), secrets (mysteriously gather), and a time when one must move forward with something (able literally move around). It also symbolizes some other things like home, family love, life, fertility in men, and a sound like a quick ng, but I don't see how any of this symbolism is connected to stonjourner.
Important note for Eternatus: While Eternamax Eternatus is obviously a hand it's also a Hydra. The "fingers" open at the end when Eternatus attacks, making it look like a 5-headed snake. This is fitting as Hydras have eternally regenerating heads (until they're burnt) This also helps explain its type, as Hydras were dragon-like creatures with very dangerous acid/venom in Greek legends.
They’re probably referencing to the freshwater cnidarian animals, the hydra. They’re named after the monster but are extremely small. I think they actually look quite similar to Eternatus
@@rrrproductionsYeah Hydras are universally represented as gigantic beasts that make humans look like specs, easily taller than the 300 feet Eternatus.
Snake enthusiast here! I’d like to speculate that Silicobra is based on false cobras, specifically the Egyptian false cobra because of its desert origins. The “false” connection also makes sense since Silicobra isn’t poison type, only looking like a cobra to trick predators into thinking it is; most false cobras aren’t truly venomous, either, and any venom they do have is usually mild compared to that of the cobras they mimic. As for Silicobra and Sandaconda’s subtle shiny forms, I like to think they’re inspired by the axanthic morph of some snakes-which basically leaves you with a washed out, grayscale snake. And one more thing I just wanted to point out. I hate to be that person, but the snake on the right at 13:04 is a ball python. They’re sweet little things that only get to be 5-6 feet tops, as opposed to anacondas that grow to around 20 feet. 😅
One thing you missed about Cufant and Copperajah that tells us they're Indian elephants is their ears. African elephants have larger ears that are large and (wonderfully & coincidentally) shaped like the continent of Africa- but Indian elephants have much smaller ears by comparison, like these two do. :)
I was sad when scorbunny evolved It would not come to play with me anymore it would hide in the back while my Espurr kicked me I'm taking this too seriously but yeah I did not want him to evolve and I can't get a ditto, ik where they are I just can't find it.
Also, I love the fossil pokemon of this gen. But I wish there were like real versions too, maybe requiring you to get all the fake ones and then talk to a scientist who tells you he thinks there's a right way to do it.
@@suppmydiff3257 Ah yes, the Nintendo fan-cannon. Constantly telling yourself things MUST BE until they aren't,and then you blame the company instead of yourself for coming up with these ideas
Blipbugs line is actually a reference to a fictional Japanese phenomenon where a nerd is such an outcast and a loner they are able to manifest psychic abilities
Another little note about Scorbunny: Rabbits are also an invasive species in Britain famously, the population got so out of control, that it almost annihilated all plant life in the country. Probably why this thing is depicted as burning any of the grass that it walks on.
Incidentally HMS Dreadnought was actually built to be faster and more offensively powerful than earlier battleships, with more big long-range guns and fewer small self-defense weapons. It was ALSO better armored than its contemporaries, but that alone isn't why it single-handedly rendered every battleship afloat at the time obsolete.
@@felonyx5123 whixh may explain why its base Speed at 74 is surprisingly high for a Pokemon of its design and build. It's not a good speed level, but it's definitely faster than one would expect
Morpeko is not only based on a guinea pig, its ability draws inspiration from "The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde“ by Scottish (!!) author Robert Louis Stevenson
As well as that story began a widely accepted belief of a "Jekyll and Hyde" Personality, where just like in the book, the person can drastically change in Reactions, Likes, Dislikes, Behaviour and most importantly, Morals. So Morpeko having a drastic difference Via hunger can act as a Stem to said Personality Disorder activating.
LOCKSTIN you forgot to mention the stereotypical color gender thing on Indeedee. Female has pink above the eyes, and the male has blue around the nose almost like a mustache.
up until (relatively) recently, the colours were the other way around in some places. blue was seen as soft and feminine, whereas pink was bold and strong, powerful and masculine.
My personal headcanon is that Morpeko is based on Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which is about a doctor with an evil separate personality. Morpeko turns dark whenever he gets too hungry. It might not be true but it was the first thing I thought of when i saw Morpeko's design.
@@softie_vinyl he could only manually turn into mr Hyde through drinking the potion, and he only ever did this to freely commit crimes and other crude activities without tarnishing his own reputation or being arrested. His personality was definitely different, more brutish or ‘troglodytic’ rather, but Jekyll was well aware of what he was doing while in that state.
Gene Simmons the lead singer of Kiss was really happy to see a pokemon that was inspired by Kiss, mostly because he can relate more to what his kids/grandkids like
@@cintronproductions9430 That, um, colorful character is also the reason they call the warp shielding tech usedd in warhammer 40k "Gellar Fields". It's amazing that he hasn't sued them as well...
One thing not mentioned with the Rillaboom line is that there was a British band in the sixties called The Monkees. Believe it or not, they're the original performers of "I'm a Believer."
This is a reason I love Pokémon, they draw so much inspiration from real life, myths, legends, and other sorts of things and then add so much lore from those inspirations that keep the series interesting
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO PERFECT! The wheels, the potential for a fast Rock/Fire-Type, the British feel... the fact that maybe you could find one in the overworld on some big set of train tracks, with Carkoal carts trailing behind it! Would have been so cool if that were a thing. Vehicle Pokémon need to exist.
@@PokeWolfe64 Cinderace is way more disgusting looking. Inteleon is cool looking imo whereas I cannot fathom Cinderace, there aren't many Pokémon that I can genuinely say I hate, Cinderace managed the achievement of going into that list the moment I laid my eyes upon it
@@sephikong8323 right. That was aggressive. I think we can all say that, design-wise, this starter trio arent very well designed. But I like them and look past the design due to how well they are in competitive, hence why I prefer cinderace.
The way the Sobble evolution line was explained gave me chills, also *fun fact; Inteleon has an Organic knife hidden in a flap in its tail, it literally can grow a knife as if it was a fruit, inside the flap is a thick mucus-like substance that keeps the knife from Cutting the Inteleon!*
Aight, we got: Kanto (japan) Jhoto (japan) Hoenn (japan) Sinnoh (japan) Unova (new york) Kalos (france) Alola (hawaii) Galar (Britan) We need a game based on eastern europe IT IS TIME FOR SLAV POKEMON
I never realized it till recently, but Hatterenna is just a really tiny girl using her hair like stilts sorta like when cartoon children climb into a trenchcoat to pretend to be an adult
I think Zacian and Zamazenta may also have connections to Romulus and Remus from Roman myths being the wolves that saved the first Roman emperor; the fact that they saved the first kings of galar also point to this inspiration.
They weren’t wolves though, they were _raised_ by _a_ wolf and Romulus was a mythical founder of Rome. Remus was his brother, who he killed for reasons that vary between stories- often just for being irritating and making fun of Rome as it was being built. I see the connection, though!!!
@@Fluffkitscripts They actually mention that reference in the game, meaning how the written stories told about how the heros were human instead of Pokemon. They had heirs that appear on postgame and tell Sonia all her research was a lie. But who knows? Maybe Romulus and Remus didn't even exist. History can change with time.
Sandaconda actually more closely resembles a reticulated python. Both cobras and reticulated pythons are native to India, which would tie them in with the rest of the British-themed Pokémon.
There is an interesting duality in zacian and zamazenta. the Pokedex refers to them as being either siblings or rivals, being unclear as to which is true (I personally think it's both). Furthermore, the game seems to imply that they are different genders, as zacian's shield Pokedex entry claims that zacian is the elder sister to zamazenta, meaning that zacian is female. This makes sense when comparing their typings and designs. Zacian has mainly smooth curves that contribute to a "sleek" look (something common among female creatures in media), not to mention the rather feminine typing of fairy and how the "hero of many battles" having the long braids and prominent markings near the eyes. This differs greatly from zamazenta's much spikier, almost always plated look, along with the masculine type of fighting, the cape-like mane present in "crowned shield" form, and the ponytail reminiscent of the stereotypical plumage on a knight's helmet. This is of course without considering the implications of their titles of "the fairy king's sword" and "the fighting master's shield," which is an entirely different rabbit hole
One thing that bugged me was how Zamazenta, the shield Pokémon, gets the power of the sun which is often depicted as offensive power, while Zacian, the sword Pokémon, gets the power of the moon, which is usually used in defensive or healing powers. But now knowing that Zacian is female, it makes sense since the moon is often attributed to femininity and the sun to masculinity.
Two extra details. First, apparently a penguin was knighted in the UK. I don't remember why, but the fact remains that there's a penguin out there to whom royalty refer to as "sir". Second, Eternatus' embodiment of death is also clearly shown in its skeleton-like appearance. It sort of looks like a ghostly, floating skeleton of was was once a living dragon.
I like how all the starters in Galar have the “growing up” evolutions instead of more magical and transformative evolution. They make more sense as first Pokémon as they reflect how real kids, their trainers, grow up. You mention this with Cinderace and Inteleon, but this also applies to Rillaboom starting out banging on rocks to connections to the earth with a professional drum stump.
It does kinda go with the evolution of the lore. When Pokemon first came out,l we saw Pokemon as either magical monsters living alongside real animals or an evolution of real animals. Pokemon really changed to just be the type of animals that exist in the Pokemon world with fewer and fewer real animal references.
Zacian and Zamazenta's seemingly ghostly appearance at the start of the game and emerging from Burial Mounds to to save Galar in its "Darkest Day" is a reference to King Arthur's title as the Once and Future King, as it is said that he will one day return in England's darkest hour to save it. The Fairy King's Sword is likely a reference to the fact that he leads the Wild Hunt in death. Wheras the Fighting Master's Shield is likely due to being a Warrior King in life? And a Red Dragon was his symbol. They called him Pendragon, after all.
There's an old british legend that there was 2 wolves who defeated a dragon using a sword and shield Which makes sense for eternatus being a dragon type bc of zaican and zamazenta being the wolves
"Eternatus" is the symbolic representation of the eternal life, death, and rebirth cycle known as Ouroboros, which is why you get "born again" from its name. Eternatus' dragon typing and appearance references the the Ouroboros' depiction of a snake or a serpent devouring its own tail. This lore points to the belief that when then messiah returns (born again as a human) and is named Christ, he will automatically become the King of England as England is said to be the Heart Chakra of planet earth.
Boltund appears to be based on a greyhound. But with it being the enemy of Thievul, it might also be based on the English Foxhound, where in the United Kingdom, Fox Hunting was a national sport.
I would say that Thievul and Nickit are intended to be based off of the Gentleman Thief archetype. A character popularized in british mediums and typically having a british accent, being nobility, or other such attributes.
@@RokuroCarisu What are you even talking about? Only three regions feature deserts in them: Hoenn, Unova and Galar. The one in Unova makes sense, as Death Valley, one of the hottest deserts in the World, is in the United States. Galar has a tiny desert in the north of the wild area, which makes no sense, as the UK doesn't have any deserts. The desert in Hoenn makes also absolutely no sense, as neither Kyushu (which Hoenn is based on) nor the rest of Japan have any deserts. No other region besides the one mentioned have any deserts.
@@Seelenfisch Death Valley is not in New York State, now is it? Anyway. Kalos Route 13 is a desert. In Alola there is the Haina Desert and most of Poni Island. And in Sinnoh, the area around Stark Mountain is arguably a volcanic desert.

Morpeko is clearly a hamster, not a guinea pig. Guinea pigs don't use wheels (aura wheel) and don't stand up as much as hamster do. Thievul also has clear influences from the 'gentleman thief' archetype, which ties into Boltund's super hero thingy.
Another thing to note about Farfetch'd: from the start, it was based on the Mandarin Duck, which is native to the far east. But there is just one other place with a wild population of this species... England.
I know Mandarin ducks well enough to see that Farfetch'd doesn't look anything like one. Especially with how short their beaks are compared to other duck species.
When I first saw Eternatus’ name, it immediately called to mind the name of a Greek deity called Aeternitas, who was the embodiment of eternity. The names are nearly identical.
Any connections or ideas in general with the galaxy in its... belly? Rib cage? Kinda brings some kind of world eating monster mythos to mind but I'm sure there's some deeper meaning to it.
I mean... because the word for 'eternity' comes from the greek deity? Its connected but it probably isn't as direct as it seems. More the greeks made up the word 'eternal' and then they named the pokemon after the concept
I like how the galar starters are all references to different types of entertainment Rillaboom - music and tv Cinderace - sports Inteleon - movies and cinema
“Boltund is too cartoonish to specify a species” Me, a Northern Brit; screaming at the screen: it’s a Staffie!! (Staffordshire Bull Terrier All seriousness I love that game freak made a Staffie Pokemon, it get such a bad rep in the media and it’s constantly balancing on the banned breeds list and can be put down if it “looks too much like a Pitbull”. I’m happy there is one positive representation in modern media, they match their Pokemon perfectly
Is that really going to change people's perspective on them? Positive representation? What about trying to educate people on how they don't deserve to be put down just because they look like pitbulls (both the actual dog and the Latino rapper no one seems to like).
Canais Young I feel positive representation can lead to good conversations about the breed which I feel helps most of all. Considering Corviknight, ravens are also famous mascots of London Towers. The royal family keeps at least six captive ravens that live at the tower, and according to tradition, they protect the crown and they who wears it
Wait. I just realised something. The original story is about a family COOLING DOWN their hot food before consumption. I don’t think I have to explain the correlation here. This was 100% intentional.
I just realised they made frosmoth ice/bug because both rock and fire would be 4× effective, wich means coalossal is the best offensive pokemon against it. It makes so much sense because Coalossal is based on the industrial revolution (damaging the envirement) and frosmoth is based on a moth that becomes worse at camouflage due to climate change. I head cannon beef between coalossal and frosmoth.
Extra thoughts on Rolycoly - the top non-wheel part with its one eye looks sort of like a stereotypical mining hlemet with a light on it, don't you think?
@@djt08031996 Yeah but pokemon's not really about the plot that much anyways... Go here beat these people up, get this item from this person to give to this other person so you can go to a different place to beat people up
I believe Corviknight and it’s significance to Galar is a reference to the British having Ravens at the Tower of London. They are said to protect the crown, and if they fly away, the crown and kingdom would fall. Which is explicitly mentioned about the Corviknights in game.

14:00 one quick additional note on penguins tying them to the UK- they were named by a british naturalist misunderstanding some of his welsh crewmen! The story goes that on the voyage where penguins were first documented, he heard the crew talking about the "pin guin", and when he looked where they were pointing, he saw the birds, so he figured the crew knew what they were and that was the name, so that's what he wrote and presented to the Royal Academy upon their return. However, "pin guin" in welsh actually means something along the lines of "white mountains", the things the birds were standing on, and what the crewmen were actually talking about. So, a welsh word overheard, misunderstood, and written by an British naturalist is how we get the name "Penguin"
That’s just like how the French misinterpreted the Native Canadian peoples when they said “Kanata” (which means village) and the French men thought that they were referring to the name of the COUNTRY, which they misinterpreted as “Canada”.
I should mention that the "skew" in Barraskewda's name could be a reference to "skewer", another word for "pike", meaning it and Arrokuda may still be partly inspired by pikefish. You were right on point there, Lockstin. 🤓
Funfact that fits well with what you said in the video already: Sirfetch'd in the German version is called Lauchzelot which is a combination of Lauch (german name for leek) and Lancelot. just to add more details to that part. Great video guys keep up the good work!
Cramorant's shiny also lines up with the character Kazooie from UK made fan favourite Banjo-Kazooie right down to the orange feathers and green eyes. Only thing missing would be longer legs. xD
Morpeko is a Hamster, which there are wild hamsters in Europe. Bolthund is a Fox Hound, especially obvious when you read its Pokedex entry saying how it is an enemy of Thievul. Toxtricity's typing is a reference to batteries, which are filled with caustic chemicals to generate an electric current. (seriously battery acid is dangerous stuff)
I thought that too, Silicobra also looks like a gun holster with his sand sack when you look at him sideways. Also the fact that Sandaconda is "Spring loaded", like come on, you can't tell me that wasn't awesome
Hmmm two wolves chase down the sun and moon in Ragnarok? Hey, the Gen 8 legendaries are wolves! And their games followed, or **chased** Sun and Moon Edit: spelling
The two wolves have to do with (if you go back to the colors), the division of Scotland and England that would one day (when they come together) create an alliance which explains the the story of the two princes being crowned under one event. I really hope @Lockstin & Gnoggin reads this because I feel like I have a good theory!
Another one of Eternatus' themes is that of fossil fuels and how unsustainable they are - it is literally a skeleton being used to power the human world, and something that was done ages ago, too. I personally saw the climax of the games to be about how we cannot rely on those types of energy like we used to, due to how destructive they are. Pollution causing rapid and dangerous shifts in the environment and the animals that inhabit it... Sound gigantamax-y to anybody else?
So the form we see may not even be what it really looks like. And given the Ultra Beast connection, you'd think Nintendo-Game Freak would capitalize with a POKÉMON ULTRADIMENSION spinoff.
There’s a lot of mixed feelings about this gen (for good reason), but as someone from the UK it’s really clear to me just how much thought and research went into the new designs. They even referenced our weird slang! The first time I saw Nickit, I couldn’t help but smile.
we do have guillemots and auks here, which are superficially penguin-like. plus, their scientific name is where the name 'penguin' came from, auks were dicovered first!
Just a few observations. 1) Grookey's evolution being musical primates could be a reference to the bands "The Monkees" and Gorillaz who were British-American and British respectively. 2) Orbeetle - Ladybugs are massively popular and cherished in the UK. So much so that the UK has their own name for them; Ladybirds. they're often bought by farmers to reduce populations and are a beloved bug. Seriously, no one is frightened of these guys. Funny you mention Penguin publishing because a print of books for young Children they have is "Ladybird". 3) Another reason for Zacian and Zamazenta being wolves is that the British Isles had wolves but they've been extinct for hundreds of years. 4) Yamper evolving into Bolthund may be a joke. Whilst the Royal family is one of the most British things, the branch we see today originate from Hannover, Germany. 5) Eiscue may also draw some imagery from pool/snooker cues with their blue heads being what you see when you rub a block of blue chalk on the head. 6) Hatterene could be a reference to how the iconography of the witch in her clothes and hair has covered up the original concept of witches, notably midwives and "kind women" of villages who were declared witches by those who had stillborns under their care among other reasons. I will say I dislike Hattrem considering she hits people for expressing strong emotion. Essentially, never invite her to birthdays, funerals, weddings, bat mitzvahs, rallies in Northern Ireland about why certain laws haven't changed like the rest of the UK and never have them around if you're a psychiatrist. Falinks is precious and the gender neutral thing is a nice touch fighting with their brothers and sisters in arms. I am surprised neither Swanna or Chansey made it into these games. Swans are legally owned by the queen and hurting one is STILL a criminal offense. Chansey would also make sense as the UK has been known for pioneering Nursing and midwifery.
