I always make Sheffield the bar tender, and give him a tuxedo and formal hat. He tells me how he can’t drink anymore with an assortment of dozens of bottles right behind him 😂

If I recall correctly, Ronnie Shaw can be assigned to a weapon shop to boost it to level 4, yes she is not a secret settler, but sometimes people forget she sells you a legendary gauss rifle

I always give Sheffield some clean clothes and put him in charge of one of my stores. Man deserves a bit of a windfall.

Shawn does have a unique trait in asking for a specific piece of junk and then giving you mods that you can use or sell.

Rylee is frustrating, but she is also hands down the best general merchant in the game for anyone trying to keep their stock of settlement building materials topped off. She is well worth it if you can get her assigned to a shop.

I know of 2 other unique settlers, Holt Combes who is another Vault 81 trader, and Ben Gibson, who is by far the most obscure in the game, has a bunch of minutemen related prerequisites to spawn.

Did you know about the Hidden Secondary stores all over the Commonwealth? Usually they are ran by random people and a select few settlers that can provide services. The most well known are the farm hands, Abarnathy farm, Finch Farm, Grey Garden, Mr Green, Warrick Farm You pick food, and they will buy it, but once you open trade and have the investment perk, you can increase their stock from something like 250 caps to 750 caps, enough to make them useful to sell stuff too.

One of the driving things that keeps me playing this game is the settlement building and companions. I love making bustling locations full of post-apocalyptic life lol

I find the scribe at 2 locations, but I make sure I have 10 settlers, and built an Armour Emporium. The first place I try is at Tenpines Bluff on the Railroad tracks down the hill. He randomly spawns there. If not I travel to Cambridge police station, go through the gates and head down the road. He can spawn in at the corner near Cambridge Polymer Labs. I always have no trouble recruiting him. Just make sure you save your game before looking for him. I fast travel to Tenpines Bluff and head down. If he is not there, i reload and try again! Just make sure you do NOT talk to him until you are ready. As in 10 settlers at a settlement and built an Armour Emporium. If you talk to him once before you have all the requirements he is gone for GOOD! Never re appears.

I spent about two weeks going from one random spawn location to the next and every single one was empty every single time. So I did a Google search and I found out that the Automatron DLC disabled all the RANDOM encounter NPC’s. The Doctor, Ron Staples, the Scribe are all gone with that DLC.

You're going to visit me, right? This dude got me crazyy, Vault Tec Rep. To fix it I had to send him to Sanctuary, circle thorugh all his speechs and then assign him to a shop, then waited like 2 days and sent him back to castle. It worked.

Man I found the scribe yesterday and something told me to speak to him but I couldn't have a conversation with him

Another cool feature about drinking buddy is you can manually put Gwinett drinks in him to make them cold, or you can put nuka colas in him to get ice cold nuka colas. Which makes them heal waaaay more. And it's ALL nuka cola, including those from the nuka world dlc.

I actually got Scribe while doing the Jamaica Plain, he was walking along exactly on the road inbetween jamaican plains and shaw school. I had my settlers over 20+ in most places but havent build a level 3/4 armor store, so the option wasn’t there. Then i made a quick save and jumped to sanctuary, popped a lvl 4 armor, jumped back and ran through the roads and got him again. He’s now selling me sweet sweet legendary sets! Just for precautions before you explore build one lvl 4 armor store, incase

I've only ever had luck recruiting Tina and the Vault tech rep everyone else I had no idea you could recruit them because anytime I used that dialogue option they would make it seem like it wasn't an option just an intentional red herring to get unique settlers. I had no idea Sheffield was an option until my last playthrough because anytime I give him the Nuka Cola the quest finishes and he just loops the same dialogue of thanking the player. I did run into the scribe for the first time in my last playthrough near the Slocum's Joe building that is across Vault 75 (I think), but when I asked him to come work for me the conversation just ended and he walked away.

You can also get some "Generic" *special* settlers if you own a few of the creation club packs. The Capital Wasteland GNR packs let you recruit all the surviving "Good Fighter Mercs" when the quest is done. The Gunners vs Minutemen: Fight for Quincy also let me recruit 3 of the Minutemen npcs after the quest was completed. I know you can get those at the Castle, but it's another way to grab some without depleting the ones you get at the Castle

It’s sad how these npcs and their quests are the most broken aspect of 4 because it’s a really interesting premise.

You can also recruit a Junkyard Dog that you could buy from Gene in a random encounter. Another one you can recruit is a Quantum Radstag, but that requires Creation Club.

For the first time since the game's launch, I encountered the Scribe just outside of the quest "When Pigs Fly". And immediately used the makeshift blade launcher to send him soaring through the sky.

This was exactly what I was looking for!! I'm trying to fill my vault 88 with as many unique/followers as possible

I ONLY found the Scribe ONCE in my first playthrough never again had I found him

Nice video, I got 3 thousand hours playing Fallout and I didn't know you can recruit some of those guys and this stuff about lvl 4 merchant, that's really special.

I can't remember his name but there is an NPC that travels around the Commonwealth selling dogs that he has trained. The player can purchase these dogs off of him but they need to pass a speech check in order to do so. So obviously make sure to save once you see this guy. But yeah it is a random encounter and he can be met multiple times. So you can get quite a few dog NPCs for your settlements thru him. I don't know if there's a limit to be honest

Can confirm that, at least on PS4, they have NOT fixed Tina De Luca. I've tried every order of her quest steps conceivable and she never recruits properly.

My favorite thing about Fallout 4 that I only just realized a few weeks ago, but its that even in an alternate version of our universe, in a futuristic version of the 1950s, there are characters that happen to have a thick modern day Boston accent😂

Never knew you could recruit the scammer

Most of the times I ever recruited the Vault Tec Rep he has been bugged out and wandered around the settlement whining about you being just fine while he was a ghoul that had to live through everything. IT got to the point where I just avoid going upstairs at the hotel just so I don't see him.

The unique vendors seem to be fixed, at least for me. After the update, I met the Scribe and Smiling Larry for the very first time!

Drinkin Buddy is the man. Ice-cold drinks, Settlement Defense, Jokes. My favorite Unique Settler.

Played 3500+ hours & only met The Scribe twice without Mods. 1st walking towards Boston Library from Vault 81/DC direction 2nd crossing the Bridge near Bunker Hill towards Cabot House. I forgot that about Parker Quinn & had No Idea about Tina DeLuca either so well done. 👍

So there's this random encounter spot a little bit behind the Cambridge police station, it's next to a couple buildings with a collapsed billboard. There's also a yellow car between this spot and the police station and you wanna save just before passing that yellow car, because once you pass the car, the random event occurs. The Scribe and Smiling Larry can both be found here (separately of course), but there's so many random encounters like super mutants, raiders and many more so you're probably not gonna see the Scribe walking past that building for a while but it's a guaranteed spawn for both of them, just a matter of when. This is a spot that you can find the Scribe even after finishing the Automatron DLC, no Rust Devil spawns. So if you've been playing for a while and you just can't find this guy, you can give this a try. Find the yellow car, save your game, and keep reloading until you see him. Please, if you recruit Sheffield, give him some dignity and give him decent clothes and weapon before he heads out to your settlement. Never realized you could send Clem to another settlement. I also didn’t know the charge card guy could be recruited. My husband and I find him hilarious because he’s a spot on spot Boston character. I’ve only ever encountered him a few times in all my playthrus (and there have been a lot). I did just encounter him a couple of weeks ago. ETA: Haven’t used intimidation in years. I’ve clocked a ridiculous amount of hours in FO4 and only just heard of the Scribe in Norespawn’s RR build.

I’ve ran into the scribe only two times and I’ve been playing the game since 2018 and each time I was never able to recruit him because he was bugged out

I just wish bethesda was consistant, all the uniques are killable, missable or buggy, While all the institute informants from bunker hill are unkillable to an extent.... It would have taken them three seconds to fix one number and made these vendors essential, saving alot of time and problems..... And oh look now we can have a quest for each unique 😉 Riding shotgun with Larry, brew some of the good stuff with Ron, operation with Anderson, ......

Trader Rylee: I just now successfully recruited her on PS4. She did the "I'm confused", but then I just asked her again and she accepted. Per your advice, I escorted her on foot. Due to this, I sent her to Kingsport Lighthouse since it's next door pretty much. I may try sending her to another settlement and seeing what happens. This isn't my ideal trade hub, but I'll take what I can get. Who knows, maybe I can get Tina this playthrough too.

For robot drinking buddy: the three tapes are in colonial tap house, behind whitechapel Charlie in the good neighbor pub, and the other one is in the shamrock tap house behind one of the counters. If you want buddy to know these recipes you have to open them yourself first

I run into the bartender almost every play through. Now the brotherhood guy, ive seen him once but he wouldn't even speak to me.

I had Sheffield and went afk in Sanctuary I later came back and sanctuary was attacked so I spoke too a random settler finishing it. Then i saw a red glare from my warehouse and Sheffield was sat in Outcast Power Armor with a missing arm and leg. Now hes locked up in the warehousse

I remember running into the scribe near The Boston Police Rationing Site. Didnt have many caps at that point, nor did i work on my settlement. Huge missed opportunity

Pretty sure there's at least one more. A very rare encounter you can get if you have Preston as your active companion, and have begun to rebuild the Minutemen (I think it's like owning 4 settlements or something). Ben Gibson. However the game might not even have him be a valid encounter due to engine level bugs. If you do happen to encounter him though, Preston will engage in conversation with him and you should be able to send him to a settlement afterwards.

I’m currently on my very first play through. I knew nothing about the game when I started, and I’m REALLY surprised at how many of these NPCs I’ve run into and have successfully recruited without knowing anything about them or this video before today. I will say though, I’ve killed one not knowing any better and assigned the others to duties that don’t match their perks as I didn’t know they had special characteristics. Side Note: Oddly, I’ve had a lot of success keeping Sutton alive by gearing him up and assigning him to Supply Line duty. I’m currently at about the six hundred day mark in-game.

Ayo that’s crazy I found the scribe right near Trudy and the drumlin diner but that was literally at the start of the game i didn’t even know he was so rare imma post clips of it now and in my last playthrough I had rylee as a trader in my main settlement how crazy

I have found and recruited all of those random encounter level 4 trade settlers in every game I had in Fallout 4. The way I do it is by doing the minimum amount of exploration early game, so I am sure that I got the random encounter locations close to Concord and the Drumlin Diner are active, and then just keep looking around there until one shows up after I have more than a total of 30 settlers between Sanctuary, Red Rocket and the farm next to it. It works every time, but it is boring trying to get to 30 settlers without much exploration. I have played the beginning of the game a lot, and the by far worst of the 4 settlers is Doc Anderson. Sometimes she never spawns in and thus is impossible to ever encounter, no matter how much you try. The Scribe, Smiling Larry and Ron Staples are all very easy to get to work for me as long as I have the requirements before encountering them. The Scribe is pretty rare to find though.

This video has shown me there was quite a lot I never saw in Fallout 4, maybe it's time to replay it. The rolled-back version with mods, of course

None of the settler bugs were fixed with the patch.

I do remember there's one guy who is in a unique random encounter with Preston. He's a former minuteman and friend of Preston who can be recruited. But he's also really bugged

I ran into the scribe super early on. Like my 1st time through Cambridge when I was doing the arc jet mission with dance, and I’m so mad that I wasn’t a higher level.

I met the scribe a year or two back in an old save as i was rounding the corner after the police station with dance(forgot how to spell his name) and past the fallen billboard i was at the very beginning of the playthrough so i didn't realize he could become a settler.

I love/hate how Parker is probably the most accurate Bostonian

the scribe you mentioned was hard to find and even harder if you have automatron dlc, i wanted to comment that i have run into him a few times and i only have the automatron dlc ( wanted to upgrade codsworth best companion btw ) anyways ive run into them near one settlement (im new to the game so dont remember names ) but the settlement is near a satellite and that security yard where you clear out the ghouls for the settlement im thinking of, anyways the scribe walking between those spots and another spot ive seen is closer to diamond city as i was cowering in the streets towards freeing nick valentine didnt realise i could have him as a settler but was a handy roaming merchant.

I found that if you complete the quest at the meat cannery after you recruit Rylee then she disappears from the game once you've recruited her.

I found the Scribe on my first day of my first playthrough near Tenpines Bluff. That was in 2019 or so. Haven't seen him since.

Quick question, cause i have heard a lot of conflicting answers, but to get raids on your settlement (I am surprised nobody wants to raid a place with a whopping 37 settlers (yes I used the SPECIAL Book glitch in survival mode) since you know that place is rocking a lot of food and water.), do you need to get Preston's group or do they just give a much higher chance to get a raid to occur?

Somehow found Scribe near Cambridge Crater. Literally outside the building just saw him walking thought it was Raiders but nope found him funny enough. Unique to see him for the first time in game ever

Ive seen the scribe walking near the combat zone but that was the only time ive seen him. I have 480 hours in fo4 and didnt know he was actually recruitable, i thought he was a bugged npc

I ran into the Scribe in Malden, outside Med-Tek Research. I was playing with Outcasts and Remnants at the time so I thought, "Oh, this must be how I start the quests". Found out he sold gear, wasn't the quest starter I thought he was and went separate ways

I did come across The Scribe. I was power armor hunting near a school...anyway, he caught my eye because he kept staring at me weird, so I engaged in conversation and purchased some gear. At the time I didn't know he was special in any way until I mentioned him to my son who explained his rarity. Maybe I'll get lucky and find him again. Thanks for the Automatron heads up, I'll continue to delay installing it...kind of dumb that it replaces all his spawn spots.

I recently recruited Rylee... Got her to set up shop in starlight. She disappeared after a few days but her shop was still marked as assigned. Then when the update dropped her store was unassigned and she's gone for good. I miss being able to buy her junk shipments.

Today I learned: I missed all of the far harbor animals. 😂 My most consistent way to get 20:20 merchant is provoking the brother into agro, killing him, then guilting her into working for me. Then walking her to the nearest settlement and building & assigning them to their corresponding work station type and then saving a unique save case things bug out. Lastly you should be able to send them to the "desired" settlement with the station they need already built before you send them there and "if"(bugthesda) they arrive safely they usually just move in and take over the(should be unoccupied) shop type without need for assignment. I usually then will manually assign them to that shop and save over the previous unique save & keep that save in case they ever wander off(bugthesda)🤷🏼‍♂️. Thanks for pointing out that detail about automaton dlc & 14:30 Having played through more times than I care to share; I do want to share that fast traveling & waiting are the best method of moving these merchants to the desired settlement and just reloading the 1st unique save point is the best method of moving any settler because of you follow and protect them not only is it tedious they are more likely to get stuck on a wall(or really anything) and "pop" out of existence. Info to aid any collectors out there😂

I have over 2,500 hours in Fallout 4, and I've encountered the Brotherhood Scribe exactly once, and that was after the next gen patch dropped. Since I'd never seen him before, I just assumed he was added with the patch.

14:27 The Scribe Locations: On a road east of Dark Hollow Pond (the same road as the one in front of General Atomics Galleria). East of Cambridge Police Station. On the road near a train bridge east of Boston Police rationing site. To locate this area, fast travel to the site, then go south for a short distance until reaching the train tracks. Follow the tracks east until reaching a road heading underneath them. Walking under the bridge triggers the encounter (save before going underneath it). Jump down on the south side of the bridge and walk underneath toward the Red Rocket station. The Scribe can potentially spawn around the corner of the station. Other NPCs and random encounters can be also found here. In a small square between Greenetech Genetics and Cambridge crater. On the street right outside of Med-Tek Research. Fast travel to the location, turn left, and walk down the street. An NPC should be visible while approaching a three-way intersection, and enemy forces up to and including a deathclaw, can materialize behind the player character. Near Revere Satellite Array. Near the front of Hester's Consumer Robotics. Behind the Cambridge Polymer Labs building. To trigger the random encounter, fast travel to the location and go south, then turn west and go down the road along the river until reaching the broken Red Rocket billboard. Then turn around and go back. Alternatively, travel to Cambridge Police Station and go down the same road to Cambridge Polymer Labs. South of Concord, near where Trashcan Carla is first encountered. South of Oberland station. Simply follow the train tracks until reaching a derailed train and a red water stop. Further south, the tracks are blocked by fallen trees, stop by the third and an NPC will have spawned in front of the player character and is walking towards them (potentially the Scribe) or behind them at the train water stop. After hiring him, a bug can occur in which random encounters will stop spawning with this method. Northwest of Irish Pride Industries Shipyard, at the intersection of the road that heads north to West Everett Estates. Outside Dartmouth Professional Building, fighting several Children of Atom. Messed up his name in the vid so here you guys go!

I actually met the scribe on my first playthrough, but I was only focussed on the main quest and forgot him

Ron Staples, Doc Anderson and, Smiling Larry are so hidden I have never seen them with my own eyes. Oddly enough I do have Trader Rylee in my Starlight.

I made shefield a doctor, he knows how to deal with addiction. The weirdest NPC I got so far is a glowing radstag, not sure what he does but he patrols the slog now. It wouldn't let me send him to sanctuary.

I ran into the scribe for the first time after 700+ hours while doing the new weapons quest, thought he was a new npc

The thing about Duke, Mishka, and Gracie, is that if you don’t have the Far Harbor DLC, you can still get the dogs, they’re just in a different place: I found them down by the old Norwegian ship in the south-east of the main map. I don’t think the guy selling them is a Super Mutant, though

2:50 I sent my Shefield to The Castle (or whatever that minute man fort is called I’m probably spacing on it) and kitted him out in good armor and clothes like he cleaned himself up and is now working with the minute men. Unfortunately he died in on of the attacks on the settlement.

One character I thought should have been recruitable is Mel from The Big Dig Mission. I typically kill Bobbi No Nose because I like Fahrenheit more and Hancock is a cool guy. I think Mel should have been recruitable after the mission is over, perhaps you can talk to him immediately before he walks away or he will go to Good Neighbor. Perhaps he could sell mods for Atomatrons.

I found the scribe before watching this video. I didn't even realize that he was recruitable. I don't really remember the exact conversation that we had. I am on survival difficulty, and I was trying to clear out the ghouls in the area that he was in. Either he was bugged and didn't offer, or I skipped right past the recruitment dialogue. I'll have to go back to see if he's still around. If not, I'll have to find him again. I did find Sheffield though. Hope he's safe!
