What I find interesting is how the logos for each faction look a lot like Japanese megacorps from a cyberpunk setting. Maybe that's a potential way to take their direction if they want to move away from the bargain bin space wolves look they've got rn
Yeah, that is a great subtle world building they got here, more than likely the Leagues descended from now long dead megacorps from a japanese derivative, that over time become dwarves for some reason lol
Beforehand I probably would've said don't get your hopes up for GW writing a xenos book without them being a borderline faceless antagonist but after seeing the recent stories of stuff like Twice Dead King, the Infinite and the Divine, and Day of Ascension there pretty much is zero excuse for them not getting a pov story. They made me empathize with Necrons and *genestealer cultists* for fuck's sake, how hard would it be to write a story about space-dwarves fighting for gold and hold?
Fun fact, the author for Twice Dead King has written short-story where a group of necrons are assaulted by kin from the Leagues, not a lot but it's something.
I really enjoy the Trans-Hyperion Alliance the most, I like how they are more into mystical side of the Votaan Cores and have more Grymnyr than most and how nomadic they are. Still working on a homebrew League, but I kinda want them to be like warp resistance and fight warp entities better or just better equipped against chaos and such
considering how sparse the lore is, my quest for the best Votann league was based entirely on making a better color scheme. a group of Trans Hyperion Alliance that were conscripted by an Urani Surtr stronghold to bolster their forces for a nearby skirmish... so army green with a cosmonaut white trim, and the other way around for characters
Going off the capitalist-hoarder vibe they have going on I went with giving them gold armor with white clothing. I like to imagine due to them literally drowning in rare earth metals like gold and silver to the point they incorporate them into their armor they now focus most of their efforts harvesting "exotic organic materials" from things like Tyranid splinter fleets or Eldar Maiden worlds. Exodites absolutely seething at the space dwarves cutting down their dumb wraithbone tree to turn into polished wood handles for axes and hammers.
I really enjoy the Votann. I painted my combat patrol in modified URSR colours. The codex also stated that URSR are currently fighting the Orks to some degree, so there's a lot of storytelling potential there for the future.
One thing I like of about the LoV is how rather than hating elves like most other fictional dwarves, they actually have a decent relationship with the Eldar (at least the Craftworlders and Exodites). If anything, the leagues hate humanity the most since they see them as technologically-stunted barbarians.
Not a Votaan lover, but it was interesting to hear the *short* amount of lore they have. And making up your own little faction in the faction isnt cringe, its what we are supposed to do, and dont let anyone make you feel otherwise. I have "my" guard regiment, and "my" scion detachment, and its fun cause you can do whatever paint schemes you want, etc.
I'd be really interested to know if anyone has kitbashed a League into a Chaos worshipping cult. I know that there are no rules for specifically chaos tainted Votaan but, it'd still be pretty cool.
Supposedly we are getting a novel. Hopefully that is soon. I am homebrewing my own league at this point. We Shall see as I really am not sure what the major difference is in 10th edition currently the league is based in water and frozen environments. I think I’m gonna call the league the Jormungandian alliance/flotilla Guild. Or something like that.
I had to look it up to not look like an idiot, but I hate that the way you pronounce ‘hegemony’ is considered valid. 🤬 Feels on par with how Bricky says ‘miracle’. Great video btw. Wish Votann had more ‘dwarf’ to their aesthetic. Slightly more advanced Kharadron Overlords is what I would’ve liked.
the greater thurian league would be pronounced 'thur-i-an' as the turians are a race of metal birds in mass effect with just tiny bit of overwhelming militarism. not an asshole, just a trying to help since I'm also a mass effect fan.
Yknow, I had pretty much zero interest in the Leagues until the vid got to the Kronus Hegemony. I've always wanted to like them cause they are pretty cool overall.... but my brain just goes "heh, diggy diggy hole" and then tunes out every time I see them. The "talking tyranid" analogy sold me immediately though, ngl
When a major league is working as mercenaries for the imperium, what are they possibly being paid in to be worth it? What do they have that they would die for them? I thought the leagues were the resouce and tech fat ones?
i really find it interesting how the Leagues really do look like humans who were kinda just forgotten about my the imperium so they still have a sorta sci fi look to them, but the fact theyre dwarves and they have some clear dwarf theming keeps them from feeling too out of place
They did a very good job I feel like making the Votann both vaguely human and vaguely alien at the same time. The markings and design styles of some of their equipment feels similar to something from District 9.
I love that all the league icons more or less just look like corporate logos from Old Earth that over the millennia have warped and shifted into something more norse/dwarfy
I do hope for more Votann stories even a surprise video game, so far the one that I like the sound of the most is tie between Yymr and Hyprerian. I like explorers just exploring and ones with a goal to gain knowedge is pretty neat and the Forgers are also my jam, delving into crafting to draw out the inner potential of creations, both of these Leagues can have pretty neat stories if given the chance.
They... got retconned into an AdMech story in their codex, that was formerly just admech v.s. orks only in the previous 2 editions, now being a league at war with the orks that the admech rudely interrupted. So hey, they got a free W versus admech!
Finally some fucking rock and stone content. When Votann are big, in like fucking 30 years, I will say that I was the og fan from the start. Fucking give me my space dwarves GW!
I have no interest in the Leages of Votann, but what made me a bit interested in them, was an image of the Leages of Votann miniatures painted in various Lego Space theme colors like Space police, Blacktron, Mars mission, Ice planet etc. That right there made me interested in them because of a random fan image.
My fav would be TSA I like the idea of explorer dwarves. They are weird On one hand they are zealots with weird almost religion-like rituals but on the other hand they are extremely good at exploration and diplomacy. They are the ones that gave tau their fancy weapons in the first place. They travel the most I will paint my combat patrol in their colors just bcs of Ukulak's Kindred (sounds too orkish imo) their tradition is to have EVERY SINGLE KIN serve as a hernkyn for 10 years. You are born diplomat? Maybe an excelent warrior? Miner? An actual scout? To the exploration duty with you! I just like the idea of hernkyn group made out of extremely different kind of kin. This would make excellent TTRPG campaign I also made my own color scheme for killteam that I got I painted them purple with gold accents and called them "Vongal Expedition", a group dedicated to figuring out how Votann come to gain satience and their goal being ultimately to find a "cure" for Votann degradation
Also fun fact: the reson the Kronus Hegemony are so violent and grabby is because their Votann is quite young (developing from a Fane which are devices in holds which Grimnyr use to communicate with the Votann) by extent making them a young new league (since every league is built around a Votann) As such they really want to get as much stuff as possible to feed their Votann with as much data/resources as possible Kinda neat!
LETS GOOOO! just started getting into 10th and despite my love of orks i'm picking up votann first in rules watched your previous votann vid yesterday and now this ROCK AND STONE!
I really like the Votaan leagues however I don't like the fact their all clones (unless there are some leagues who arnt?) I dunno, I made my own league and their half painted and are holding a grudge against me until I finish painted what I have for them!
I feel like the word clone is a misnomer with them. Gene tailored vat babies probably fits better, as each one is in fact a unique person genetically built from the ground up by the Votann.
