For best results view at 1080p60fps. Here's a quick look at every single official Sega game released for the Commodore 64! This one took a metric TON of work and close to a month to cobble together with the little free time I have these days. Hope you like the results! There are over 40 games in this video and there are quite a few instances where the same game had more than one port or different regional differences and all of those are included.

Another great video! Love this format, perfectly paced with just the right amount of detail, plus a sprinkling of humour/sarcasm for good measure! Some very fond memories here. C64 was my main gaming fix for the last few years of the 80s and played a lot of these back in the day. Space Harrier in particular provided hours of fun for me and Thunderblade was truly impressive for the hardware.

Excellent video. I can’t even begin to imagine how long it would’ve taken to compile all of that! As I’ve mentioned from previous conversations we’ve had on here, the C64 was also my primary platform throughout the 80s as home computing was more of a thing here in the UK. The NES barely made a dent until very late and the SMS (which was more popular) happily coexisted alongside home computers. C64 arcade ports were always a mixed bag and rarely did the hardware justice.

It took a while, which is why there's been fewer videos lately, I've been working on this. I wanted to play everything fresh before commenting on it for the video. I also ran in to a LOT of tech issues and ended up just yesterday replacing my main computer. Anyway, while it wasn't my main platform for that long, it was the main platform I used from about 1983 through about 1987. I used it beyond that here and there, but it's time pretty much ended once I got the Genesis in the summer of 1989.

I loved the hell out of Afterburner on the C64 as a kid. I guess I didn't know any better and I was huge into fighter jets at the time and especially the F-14. It's possibly the first video game I ever completed!

Hey, we like what we like. There's plenty of old games I enjoyed that other people hated. There's also plenty of older games that I kinda like even though I know they're objectively bad, but that's me!

The UK outrun was done by a 17 year old with his dad in record time. Pretty amazing in that regard.

Wow, thanks for that great review! I loved Space Harrier most back then, it was fast and actually I loved the music. Then comes Outrun which has much better music but Space Harrier is my all time favourite Sega game. Thanks again, love your review, it's really unique. 🙂

Precisely why I picked up the C-64 Maxi a couple years ago, so I can play all these great classic games. Works great with my USB control panel I made with Sanwa JLF-8YT sticks and buttons. Have to check out some of those games you showcased, thanks for the heads up my friend!

The C64 was a great little machine for its time. The SID chip was a revelation for music, we wouldn't get anything better at home pretty much until the 16-bit generation came along years later. It's not as easy to enjoy a lot of the games today, but they're still interesting to check out. I don't have a mini, but one of my brothers does and he loves it.

Back then, as a kid in the 90's and having lots of fun with the SMS at my friend's house, we played many games, Dynamite Dux was one of them, that's why I have nostalgia towards it, and I agree with what you said, but I actually never saw it as an beat' em up game, it's more like an action game and yes the normal punches are basically useless. We learnt to rely on its powerful fists most of the time, by holding the punch button and you can get rid of many enemies at a time, the game also gives temporary power ups as you progress, too. The bosses are really cool, the Stone boss you have to crack it's minions and the Fire boss you have to extinguish with water, also the portals taking you to the next stage are cool, so it has a lot of imagination in it, we loved the creativity of this game. I only learned this was based on an arcade original not too long ago and it's really surprising to see a much improved game visually, which I still have to sit and enjoy imagining myself at 8 again. We also enjoyed Black Belt, Gangster Town, Bart vs. the World and many more on the SMS. Now, I'm basically a virgin when it comes to the C64 and this video was very educational. I have zero nostalgia towards this little computer, but I was impressed with some of the efforts in these ports, I don't care about Power Drift, but this port is absolutely crazy, it does many things even 16-bit ports never had the guts to even try and it manages to be quite good. Also, I always found 8 and 16-bit racing games lacking when it comes to representing mountains and other details in racing games, Outrun Europa tries this and manages to do a decent job in the process. What I wonder is, imagine if the best developers which pulled the impossible on this rather spartan 1982 piece of hardware, what they could do if porting the same games to the Mega Drive, PC-Engine, SNES, or even the NES and SMS? What they achieved with Thunder Blade, Power Drift and Galaxy Force II alone are, in my opinion much more impressive than what the original developers managed to when bringing these titles home to their own consoles.

Yeah, I had (have) an SMS and was always a fan of that, too. It has its own share of impressive stuff. But yeah, it would have been nice to see super scaler ports on the SMS and Genesis that were done differently. There were some major differences in how the hardware worked and drew the images on the screen (the consoles were tile based) which is probably why they were made the way they were. Still, there's no excuse for Super Thunderblade on Genesis/MD 😁 At least not other than being one of the first games built for the system!

In all honesty, being a launch title or not, Thunder Blade 2, Space Harrier II and others can't compete with the ports you showed in this video, Thunder Blade even has altitude controls, Power Drift is impressive as is Galaxy Force II. It's hard to point any SEGA arcade port on the Genesis that impresses, Outrun is a 1991 release, if I remember correctly, I don't think it would be much worse if it was a launch title, as it's quite competent for what it is, but all Sega games on the SMS and Genesis have a certain feel to them, like they are flat in spots or something. Believe me, I like most of the Genesis ports, but there's no way anything arcade to console is as impressive as the C64 ports I learned about in this video.

As a two player game, _Hot Rod_ @29:00 gets ten out of ten, and is one of extremely few C64 games I'd call _still playable._ My own C64 video (provocatively titled "Are you wasting your life yet?") does indeed draw attention to the impossible task programmers set themselves in adapting Galaxy Force to work on the C64: beholding the impossibility is a game in itself.

Actually the first port of After Burner (the EU one) is of After Burner II, which you can tell with the ability to select speed to get away from missiles and some other stuff, while the US one is of After Burner I. Yes, After Burner II not a sequel, but an enhanced revision with some notable differences. The US release is based on the original game, as is the Master System port. In the EU C64 version you can see the roman numeral II in the intro. Many don't realize there is an After Burner and After Burner II. All the footage you show from Arcade is from After Burner II.

That version of Alien Storm is quite impressive I remember randomly finding an alien storm arcade unit in a dairy shop I would stop in at to play rygar and one day they had AS and a Hippodrome unit added I actually loved the look and quickly set about securing myself a Megadrive with Alien Storm the commodore 64 surprises me often a mate I would hang around with would hang at this dudes house who had a c64 and his brothers etc were right into the cracking scene I guess and so I Iiked the c64 something to do in-between our antics

Yeah, C64 Alien Storm is kinda OK for what it is. Which is kind of a surprise considering what a disaster scrolling beat 'em ups normally turn out to be on the C64.

C=64 F O R E V E R ♥️ You can turn on the music in Dynamite Dux in the title screen (I didn't know until last year).The music for Altered Beast was already finished but didn't make it into the game (you can listen to it in the SID player). I think the most common reasons for missing music were: deadlines, expensive licenses, sloppiness...

Yeesh, I thought I knew most of the games where you had to manually enable music, but I didn't know about it for Dynamite Dux, thanks for the info! And yeah, there were a few common reasons they cut music, but the one thing I can say is: none of them were good enough, they should never have cut the music from any game that they did that to!

SEGA did have a horizontal shoot'em up hit in the 80's: Fantasy Zone!!What is also often overlooked: the English software studios(like OCEAN/Imagine, elite, Activision etc..)had to supply several systems: C=64, CPC, Z80 and from the mid-80s also Amiga and Atari-ST.

Yeah but Fantasy Zone isn't a 'normal' horizontal shooter, the free left and right movement completely changes up the design and traditional play mechanics of the genre and there's no significant background interaction. It's hard to believe they didn't do their own take on stuff like Gradius and R-Type, as big as the genre was in the mid to late 80s and early 90s.

I mean, a good chunk of these games could be considered "impossible ports" and for what they were, I ended up appreciating most of them. Chris Butler had crafted a good engine to cram into the breadbin crude "scaling" effects and I like the C64 versions he made (Space Harrier, Thunder Blade and Power Drift) but the gameplay never truly clicked with me. On the other hand, I don't know what it is, but Out Run Europa clicked with me as soon as I bought the original C64 tape in 1992. I mean, I must be one of the very few uber fans of that game but I loved its quirks, they made it compelling to me. I play and enjoy it to this day. But then again I actually loved Golden Axe on the C64, which I bought the budget re-release of (KIXX label if I'm not mistaken), I think it was bug fixed to an extent. The most gimped version of the game you can think of but I was glued to it to completion. Not to mention Last Battle, an other game that earned my pocket money and my playing time to completion. I was a huge Hokuto no Ken fan and even though the European ports were completely disenfranchised, I knew about its origins and that was enough for me. It's probably a bit crap today, but to be honest I don't regret the time spent with it. Also, I'm actually a fan of Enduro Racer the arcade version (admittedly I never played the SMS game tho) and I thought the C64 port was not too bad. Not the best but still serviceable.

Always hated the term "impossible ports," you can port anything to anything else, it's just a matter of how well you do it. Anyway, I think overall how much we still like and remember these games will always be tied to how much we played and enjoyed them when we were younger. Nostalgia is a powerful thing! I know I like some games that I can understand are objectively bad, lol. But any way you slice it, the C64 had a lot of super interesting original games and ports!

I always enjoyed a good Sega port on the c64. Most of the Capcom conversions were arse (thnx US Gold), but give me a solid Shinobi, Hot Rod or Turbo Outrun and I'm happy.

It all depends, some of the Capcom games were decent, despite only having three levels in the original port, C64 Commando was epic for the soundtrack alone. Ghosts n Goblins was good, the UK port of Bionic Commando was good, and there are some other good ones. I mean, as far as Sega ports go, imagine your experience was limited to say Time Scanner, G-LOC and E-Swat!

Yes. Italia is an updated version of the game that was modified and updated for the UK and other European markets.

I believe you missed out on the other version of Enduro Racer - I think the conclusion was that it was released on a compilation. GTW64 probably has an entry on it.

Amazing video, the only thing i'm not agree is with the golden axe port. I think is a pretty decent game. Having no more than 1 enemy on-screen surely scks but let's see all the good stuff it does have: 1. Those amazing hand drawn stills from the characters in the begining. 2. The 3 original characters selecteable (unlike Sms port only have Ax battler) 3. AMAZING Sid renditions of the original score 3. Magic is there 4. Beast riding is present 5. Scroll, graphics and animations are pretty good for the C64 (Sms port is a choppy mess) 6. Almost all stages It pushed a lot the C64 hardware I think a second enemy was not actually possible with all that graphic detail.

Thanks! We'll have to disagree on Golden Axe, I think the gameplay on C64 is pretty atrocious. The SMS port may have cut some stuff, but the graphics and gameplay is drastically better IMO, despite the choppiness that comes out of that one being tile based. On the C64 port every level also drags on for what feels like an eternity. Anyway, not trying to change your mind, just letting you know where I stand on this one and why.

Actually, there is a version of Golden Axe C64 that has the final level. The original release didn’t have that, but I guess they fixed that in the later release.

I used to have Action Fighter on the SMS back in the day. I loved it back then, it's makes for a good SMS game but I think I hate every other version :P

If the C64 version had in-game music... it'd be pretty good! It's much better than the the Amiga version, for example. It's weird how many C64 games run smoother at a full either 50 or 60 fps than Amiga games which often ran at half its refresh rate or LESS. Never understood that.

I agree with almost everything you said, however there's one small aspect of the Sega version of Zaxxon that I prefer over the Synapse version, and that's Zaxxon himself. The sprite in the cartridge version is much more detailed, if a little smaller. I'd love for someone to hack the games and put that sprite in the other version. Coincidentally, the Synapse version of Zaxxon was ported to the Amiga by a demo group, but after perfectly porting a couple other C64 games, they chose that one to get silly with. After you get past Zaxxon, the fortresses start having giant toilets and such. I was extremely disappointed. BTW, you missed a game. There are two version of Alien Syndrome. The one you played was the UK/European version. The US version has SLIGHTLY improved scrolling. It still doesn't keep the player centered, but when you're about 3/4 of the way to the edge of the screen, it starts scrolling at the same speed as you're walking. So it has faster scrolling, but only once you get close enough to the edge to trigger it, which still causes you to accidentally run into aliens. Oh, and it seems to have pretty lousy hit detection. Or maybe that last part was the fault of running it in WinVICE.

Yeah, I've played those C64 to Amiga ports of stuff like that and Donkey Kong. As for Alien Syndrome, I forgot that there were regional differences in that one. I might toss it into a little video of its own down the road.

@@InglebardGaming The home ports of Alien Syndrome were a big disappointment to me. I didn't get to go to arcade very often, and when I did, I usually didn't have much money to spend, so I never got good at any of the games, but I did like Alien Syndrome. I would have thought the Amiga was a decent effort (even if they messed up the scrolling on that one too), if they hadn't left out two of the levels. Then the C64 version had even worse scrolling. Most of the other home ports either were quite different, or very cut down. It's like they always picked the games I liked to botch the home ports. Like Thunderblade. The Amiga version could have been a lot better, but I liked the 3D effect. However, i thought the controls made the game unplayable. Using the joystick to control the speed was completely impractical and taking your hand off the stick to use the keyboard was suicide. Or Outrun, which was horrible. Space Harrier was a crappy port. Super Hang-On was almost good, if not for the fact that all the other riders intentionally try to crash into you, making the game much harder than it should be.

The problem with the C64, although it wasn't really a hardware issue, but with programming it, is that a lot of coders back then didn't realize that they could have both SFX and music in games, so they often sacrificed one for the other. A lot of modern homebrew games have both SFX and music, because they only assign two channels of the SID to music and use the other for SFX.

It's not that they didn't realize they could do both, they felt like with only three channels you could do music or sfx well, but not both together. Plenty of games from back in the day did both, others chose one or the other or had an option for the player to toggle one or the other themselves. It was just up to what the devs and publishers thought sounded best.

Why was the c64 version of eswat so ass backward tho with the short ass legs and tall body's when clearly Sega's Thing back in the day was to have long cool legs and shorter body torsos 😅

There were a lot of weird character designs on C64 back then. I think they were using the max size of two to four sprites which is why they're shaped the way they are, lots of games did that sort of thing. Definitely ugly, in this case!

Limited colors (only 16), one button controller, and poor execution many time by developers. I mean, there is a damn near pixel per pixel reproduction/port of Super Mario bros. (And remember the NES version pretty much WAS the same as the coin operated arcade)

OK. I don't think there was anything close to a controversial opinion in this one, but we're never all going to agree on every game. Some of these C64 games were pretty well done and some weren't. As for Shadow Dancer, I like it, it just isn't as good as the original Shinobi and like many I prefer the Genesis version of Shadow Dancer to the arcade version - it was just faster, had smoother play mechanics, and better music IMO.
