I worked with SanDisk to bring you this product showcase of the SSD's I've been using since being introduced to them last year. When I travel they go with me. In the studio we use them to transfer large amounts of data quickly. And I even use one as for my Apple Time Machine Backup.

Hey Jared I certainly agree that having a portable hard drive is very good for any photographer especially if you are traveling. And I also agree that SanDisk has amazing products. I think the only issue I would have for this particular product is that it is Way above what my budget would allow. Western digital has some very good options that offer great read and write speeds. The one I have is a 1 TB portable SSD that cost about 90 bucks and offers a transfer speed of up to 400 MB. It looks as though this sandusk is much more advanced but I think it may be cost for heavy than for a lot of us.
@masterinico
@masterinico Год назад
Even if you need the speed you can buy an external enclosure with USB 3.2 for about $30 usd and a Team Group 2tb SSD for about $90 and the only difference is the lack of waterproof / ruggedness.

As a hobbyist, the regular consumer edition fits the budget more, I agree. I don't mind the longer transfer times, as long as there are no mechanical parts that can be easily damaged.

Before I retired, I was an IT consultant, traveling with my MacBookPro, 2TB SanDisk SSD, and external 16" USB3 display (helpful for presentations, BTW). Back home, as a photography hobbyist, I use a 4TB SadDisk SSD to backup my photos & as a buffer before transferring them to larger/cloud storage. Even for my cameras, I left other brands for SanDisk SDXC and have it from 16GB to 512GB. I find it very reliable.
@reneefariasphoto40
@reneefariasphoto40 Год назад
Totally agree. I am a SanDisk fan. I went digital back in 2008, yes a little late in the game since I started my career in 1996. Since 2008, all cards are SanDisk. Currently on my desktop lives a SanDisk Pro 18TB backup hard drive, spinning at 7200rpm which these were SSD but still very stable and great for back up. For the field, for sure SSD is the way to go. Happy New Year.

I've never gotten the G40 version, but I have a Sandisk Extreme SSD and an Extreme Pro V2 and they're crazy fast (twice as fast as my other portable SSDs and way faster than my desktop drives) and super well made! 4TB is a lot of storage so that I can keep important folders or shoots on while still having lots of space to offload new shoots while out or on trips

In EU the price is 769€ for 2T :))) Good luck with that SanDisk! You can get a M.2 NVMe, Samsung 990 PRO 2 TB 2T (259 €) in a EEM2-UG2 USB-C 3.2 GEN 2 - NVME M.2 BOX (32€) Price: 291€ vs 769€ read/write speeds up to 7,450/6,900 MB/s. Vs. speeds up to 2700MB/s1 read and 1900MB/s1 So 2,6x cheaper and 3x faster!

I don't have one of these external SSDs yet, but it's on the list. If I have to flee a disaster (e.g. fire, flood, zombie apocalypse, disco revival) I'm not going to be able to carry my computers. But if I have them backed up to a pocket-sized storage device, it's easy. However, I can't follow Polin's advice to buy one of these now, because I followed his advice about buying good lenses, and now I don't have any money left. Checkmate, Polin!
@xJasterx
@xJasterx Год назад
Careful with using SSDs as long-term backups or storage without powering them on. SSDs spontaneously lose data in a process called "bit rot" which will cause progressive data degradation when not powered on for a sufficiently long period of time (3 months to 1 year depending on if it is M.2 or SATA and the specific types of storage chips used.) So, power them on from time to time or use spinning rust for long-term offline storage.

Happen to have made my own by getting a Lexar Professional 2TB NM800 PRO PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe M.2, and installing into a rugged USB-C adapter for under $220 instead of spending what the SanDisk Pro cost for the same storage. These things are expensive for someone who shoots as a hobby. I recently got a M.2 housing from Amazon for 10 bucks and its 3.2. SSD's are always going on sale and when they did I got a 1tb for 40 bucks so in total I spent like 60 in total and I'm transferring 3500 megs a sec. I'll definitely upgrade but for now these are a must

have you had issue with your usb c cable disconnecting from your blurred out fruit laptop pro? I have the orange and grey sandisk which has a solid connection but my non blurred out fruit laptop pro seems to have a not so solid connection no matter which port I try. last time I did a backup if the laptop moved at all I had to start over. im thinking I may have to get in touch with Tim Apple. this is a pretty new pro and the c's haven't been used much.

I have a 2018 Macbook Retina and with my 2TB Sandisk (non-pro) version of the SSD I too have noticed twice that the slightest movement while backing up or data transferring stops the process! My setup is the SSD sitting on the desk next to the laptop, connected with the short and fairly rigid USB-C cable, to a USB-C to USB adapter and then into the laptop. The adapter (supplied by Sandisk in the package with the drive) is needed because my laptop doesn't have USB-C ports, only Thunderbolt 2 and USB.

If it gets mislaid (and of course, none of us when working fast would EVER accidentally leave an important piece of gear behind, right?) then there is a very good chance it will be returned.

Be very careful when unplugging these drives on a Windows computer. With SD and CF memory cards, it seems that you can plug and unplug them whenever you want to. With my 5TB SanDisk SSD drives, you have to confirm that the computer is finished communicating with the SSD drive even though all the files appear to have been transferred. Sometimes they aren't and you lose all the files on the SSD drive (I only use SanDisk SSD). If unsure, simply shut down your computer and remove the drive to play it safe.

@mariemuller838
@mariemuller838 Год назад
No there was something like this but it got discontinued. What you can do if you don't want to use a laptop in the field is to just use a phone, connect camera and a portable drive to it and copy the files that way. Another option would be to get something like the ravpower file hub this allows you to insert a SD card and plug in a drive and copy the content over at a press of a button the only downside being that you still need a phone to verify that it worked correctly and monitor the process. So in my opinion just using a phone to copy everything is the easiest solution.
@masterinico
@masterinico Год назад
They used to. However the cost effectiveness of this is no longer viable with the cost of memory cards getting so cheap and small it’s just easier to buy 6-10 or more cards for trips and rugged card case folio’s to store them in. They do make very tiny computers with win11 and 2ghz cpu’s (as small as your phone) that could absolutely be used to transfer all your memory card data to a 4tb SSD).

There’s no such thing except Gnarbox and they’re wildly more expensive than just buying more SD Cards. A card case and stack of SD cards will cost less and get you more storage than a device doing what you’re asking. If you must, buy a mini pocket pc with two USB 3.0 ports to do the transfer. They’re as small as a cell phone
